I went with my daughter for breakfast after dropping my grandson into nursery and my first Monday of my retirement. We both ordered avocado muffin with poached egg as extra, refillable tea/coffee included. While waiting for the order to arrive I was told there were no avocado, we changed to cheese and egg muffin which was cheaper and also had refillable tea/coffee included. I went to the till to get a refund and the guy took the price of the teas we were drinking off the total, I explained that as the teas will be included with the cheese and egg muffins I wanted the total refunded, which he did. I then paid and went to wait for our breakfast to arrive.....and then it did half toasted muffin, no butter (we asked but was told don't have butter), a slice of plastic cheese and egg on top...well you only have to look at the photo to see how awful it was. As we had no time to send it back or go somewhere else to eat as little Denis would need collecting from nursery we ate it but will not be back!!!!

Does what it says on the tin I suppose... Whilst I acknowledge what grateful diners on a tight budget have already said about it "being good value for money"... I have to strongly disagree. Unless of course one happens to have a ponchon for microwaved beige food coupled with ice cold customer service. As I said above, it is a Spoons after all. That said, despite the welcome price of the drinks, the numbing noise of half-cut brain-dead and imbred locals struggling to string more than two syllable words together glued by a bland range of expletives makes the experience an interesting one to say the least. It's not like it's a bad place... The Hope Tap is far worse if truth be told. Yet one unifying factor is the extremely poor customer service: apart from the slightly more jovial rotunde bar manager, a mature woman with blond hair and the short chap sporting the glasses, most employees here are lacking in any kind of developed social skills: smiling and niceties seem alien to them. This is echoed by countless reviews above. In fact, it would be fair to say, that what could be an absolutely lovely boozer is diminished by the disdainful attitude of the bar staff employed here towards its patrons. In all honesty, one suspects the top man (bar manager) who has short hair, probably in his late 40s, surely studied for a BA (Hons) in hatred whilst at university. Indeed, on more than several occasions my friends and I have simply tried to ask him how he is doing and engage in polite chit-chat and we are consistently met with an unacceptable and rude response and a shrugg of the shoulders... honestly mate... if you don't like working with customers get another job. Tip to most of your staff... we customers are not unreasonable and when some us exercise some sophisticated social etiquette, such as, saying "how are you", or even "thank you", it's just common courtesy to acknowledge that and be polite. Manners cost nothing. Decent enough pints, food bland, but if you can stomach that...knock yourself out. Biggest issue is poor customer service. Peace out!

I’m totally staggered by the poor attitude displayed by the bar manager last night. We attend the pub for a meet up every December and have done so for several years . We are a mixed group of former work colleagues predominately aged in our fifties to seventies with many of us retired. We are always well behaved and never cause trouble. At around 5pm last night my colleague and I went to the bar area which was virtually empty at the time in order to buy a drink. We were told that we were not going to be served and nor were the rest of our group who were about 30-40 in number. We politely asked for the reason for this and were told that the barman had warned members of our group on six occasion's about standing near the bar area. This all seemed very petty. We tried to reason with the bar man and said we would speak to our group and relocate them within the pub but he was not interested in listening to us, bordering on ignorant. When we explained to our group that we had been refused service and had to leave the pub, they all thought that it was a wind up. We left the pub without making a fuss all totally mystified by events and had a great evening together at a pub down the road , where we were well received. During conversation later we could not identify anyone who had actually been warned by the bar manager at the Back of Beyond about the ‘offence’ of standing near the bar area. To my knowledge no other customer was obstructed from getting a drink at the bar. Correct me if l’m wrong but you have to go to the bar area to get a drink! I’ve never heard such a strange lame excuse for kicking a large group of people out of a pub, quite unbelievable. He is fortunate that we are well mannered people because his treatment to us would not have gone down well with many other more vocal groups. Maybe we were an easy touch due to our old age. The bar manager needs a course in customer service and care to help him with his surly approach. He is an embarrassment to the pub and cost Wetherspoons hundreds of pounds.

The group I was meeting have been using this pub for our Christmas drinks for the last few years. But last night will be the last time. We were a large group of about 25 mainly in our 60’s, we were well behaved & polite. But after a couple of hours our group had grown & the man behind the bar refused to serve us. Apparently because we were too close to the bar, personally I think it was because they didn’t have enough staff on & he didn’t want to work too hard. We took our business to the Outlook 50yds up the road for a much friendlier experience

Dreadful spent thousands in herebof years but 30 old persons thrown out including me for standing near the bar!!.I will not spend 1 penny in their pubs ever again.

Me and a group of friends from Reading used to visit the back of beyond for their mid week pub quiz every week. We never came close to winning but always had a good laugh over a couple of beers and some decent food. We came out for a weekend christmas drinks night last year and were having a great evening and a good catchup in a nice central pub to us lot. My partially sighted girlfriend was out on the same night nearby, and wanted to meet me there so we could get a taxi back together. She doesn't like to advertise her disability to every Tom, Dick, and Harry so she didn't have her symbol cane as she entered the pub. I was nearby the entrance waiting for her, and she accidentally bumped into a chair as she came into the pub. I quickly came and got to her and made sure she was alright. She was all good, just a bit embarassed. I got her a lemonade, and myself an overpriced small can of Monster. As we walked away from the bar to the table my friends were sat at, we got collared by the manager, whatever his name was, and he stated he wasn't going to serve either of us any more drinks as my girlfriend was obviously drunk. All the while pointing to his silly little camera. I explained how she struggles to see in low light conditions and it was simply an accident that she bumped into an empty chair and she was incredibly embrassed by it. I tried to explain her condition to him but he wasn't having any of it. He was just trying to get a rise out of me on his silly little camera. I said fine, I'll leave, just let me say bye to my friends and we'll be off home. All the so called manager wanted to do was to try and escalate the situation, and basically not let me leave. It's like he wanted a fight, not a simple resolution like us leaving just like he asked us to. Ridiculous situation, and I hope that your so called pub becomes flats soon.

Very, very poor service for a bar with so many staff. There's one guy serving anyone with the biggest mouth rather than the next person, a girl who's surly and gives you food with no cutlery and when she does its dirty, and staff that walk into you without apologising. The only decent member of staff who treats you like a paying customer is the small, older blonde haired lady. Avoid.

There was a customer making me and my friends very uncomfortable at the table, a worker named Leila showed us support and created a lovely safe space for us, she was sweet and friendly and made sure we were safe thought they night. Truly a lovely waitress

Really nice to get their food at lunch. Their Deli deals are brilliant. I always order on the app and have their chipotle chicken wrap with a drink and order on the app. Tasty, cheap and friendly staff.

We were out exploring Reading along the canal and popped in here for a drink. We decided to sit out the back next to the canal. The seats were wet, so I went to the bar to ask for some blue roll paper to dry the seats myself. I tried to get the attention of the young girl with the long brown hair who was arranging glasses near the glasses station, I said excuse me very politely, she looked straight at my face and totally ignored me and walked away. She was NOT in the middle of a order, because I watched . I did mention this to one of the guys behind the bar, as a bit of genuine honest feedback about a staff member, he did not seem that bothered. So because of this one untrained ignorant young staff member, I've given one star so that I could actually leave a review. I will not be back simply because of that member of staff. A smile and politeness is not effort at all. I suggest she looks for a non facing customer role elsewhere. It had not rained all day, so the water on some of the seats had excess water on them from throughout the night (I assume), so it would not take much effort for someone to wipe the wet seats for customers, especially as we were not the only people to go and ask for blue roll. This was on Saturday 29th October 2022 at approx 2.50pm.

Nice for central reading beer garden out the back by the water. We didn't eat but the drinks were good. Ordering on the app was easy and delivered by several friendly waitresses. Covid measures in place. Our visit was enjoyable, no problems.

We had breakfast here on a Friday morning and it was okay. There were no bananas available with the porridge and my cooked breakfast was only lukewarm. Service was fine though and breakfast served quickly.

This Wetherspoon Pub has a great location by the Kennet river with a nice outdoor terrace. Their menu is traditional Pub fare, Wetherspoon style, and the prices are accordingly. But there are few places where you can have a drink or a light meal.

I love a Sunday breakfast at a weatherspoons, I eat them all over the country and is my favourite meal! Have just moved to reading permanantly and really looked forward to my first Sunday visit to my new local weatherspoons for the meal that I love eating, it wasn't very busy, there was no wait on food, somehow they found it acceptable to serve me stone cold food they'd cooked off earlier in the day and hadn't even been clever enough to pop in the microwave for 30 seconds!! Noone around to ask why I'd been served cold food, had to walk to the bar and put my food down, server ignored me with a full plate of food Infront of me and served someone else, the manager came out stocking up and called for a girl to come over rather than acknowledging me, then he asked me what was the problem, I said I've been served cold food and I want my money back, the only good part of the experience was the manager must get alot of complaints about bad food and just refunded me, no apologies however, left a full pint and full plate of food on the bar, worst weatherspoons I've ever been in, and although a local now, will never return to this venue ever!! Awful doesn't cut it! No standards and no cares from the manager, just quick money back sums up they know they are bad!! Eat somewhere else in reading, my McDonald's was fresh!!

Cuando le respondí que debería concentrarse en el trabajo que tenía en la mano, respondió: "Bueno, no volveré a servirte" (como si me importara). No soy un tipo que se divierte en el bar y creo en ir y venir del bar lo antes posible para que otros puedan ser atendidos, pero ella era simplemente grosera, grosera, grosera. Este es un gran Wetherspoons a pocos pasos del centro comercial Reading y ubicado junto al canal th. Tiene un área al aire libre también. Esta fue la primera vez que visitamos y como era un martes tuvimos el bistec especial. Fue muy bueno con todos los bistecs cocinados como se ordenó y las papas fritas y la chaqueta muy caliente. Con cervezas bien conservadas, encontramos que este es un Wetherspoon's excepcional. Sin duda volveremos de nuevo.

For a Wetherspoons pub, it is quite a nice one. With spacious seating, less casino machines, it is relatively quiet comparing to other pubs in the chain nearby, like the Hope Tap in Reading town, which makes the meal and chatting with friends more enjoyable. If there are too many noisy people it'll not be a comfortable environment. You can order from the bar table and also from the app on the phone which is quite convenient. I quite appreciate that they have promotion for a special meal each day so that you can get the meal deal with discounts. It was a steak meal that was on promotion on my day of visit and my friends really enjoyed it. The price is relatively low for pub food but of course, the food will not be as delicious as those in more decent pubs, yet, to be fair, the food is more than acceptable. Good pub choice for students who is looking for affordable pub food.

Large establishment with plenty of well spaced tables. Good food and the cheapest drinks in the area.Now has an app so that drinks and food can be ordered and paid for by phone. Downloaded and very quick and efficient service. Easy to use.Toilets clean , but out of three cubicles only one had toilet paper. Also at least one of the soap dispensers was not working.

Didn’t get ID at bar, when sat down was asked for ID. Continued to ask and we showed our IDs, only to be told we can’t order anymore drinks even though We are 18!!! Then whilst we are waiting for food and eating, we were watched the whole time, made us feel very uncomfortable! And don’t feel this is acceptable, constantly circled around our table! ( a manager aswell, should not make customers feel like this) Buns were also stale on our burgers which meant we could not eat. Maybe you should train staff to ID people, not watch us constantly and make us feel uncomfortable.Will not be returning :(

Why did you let Shaun Wallace take over your quiz? He was a terrible question master! Questions asked much too quickly, couldnt always hear as not using mic properly. He should stick to answering qustions not asking them!

Went in for a quick drink but was met with incompetent and rude staff, especially the short middle-aged woman with the red glasses who seems to have no interpersonal skills. Dirty tables everywhere even though it wasn’t busy. Whole thing seems pretty amateurish. Better off going elsewhere.

Beer is well kept and variety of ales unbeatable. The management team are highly professional as are the wonderful staff. Food is of good value and good quality. You will never have any complaints with this establishment.

The Back of Beyond is a good place for a wide selection of cheap drinks, however the interior is dated and if you visited in the day you would see the lack of natural light inside. Not a must visit but a good choice if you are only concerned about price.

Part of a group of 3 eating at “The Back of Beyond” in Reading. I ordered a BBQ Chicken Melt with chips at £9.90. What a small sad looking plate of food! The portion size was totally inadequate (a single small chicken portion, too few chips and too few peas) whilst the presentation was poor. Not what I have come to expect from Wetherspoon's. I raised this with our waiter and was told that this was what I had ordered, so I took my plate to the bar and escalated my complaint with the duty manager (Sam). Sam took the plate off me and led me away from the bar to an empty table near the kitchens. He then explained that there was nothing wrong with my food, he said he had sold thousands of BBQ Chicken Melt’s just like this and that I was the first to complain. This was not the response I expected. I said that the dish looked more in keeping with a children’s portion – so I informed Sam that I was still very unhappy and that although I would still eat the food, I would consider publishing a photo on Trip Advisor and making a formal complaint to Wetherspoon Head Office. Sam raised his voice and became very agitated at this point, he picked up my plate and initially wanted to take my food back into the kitchen. There followed an uncomfortable stand-off where Sam refused to let me have my food. He relented only after I had explained that I had already taken a photograph and that he was only making matters worse. He then offered me an alternative dish (“anything from the menu”). I said that I felt it too late for that. I said that I didn’t want to wait for another dish to be cooked and that at this point I would rather just eat my BBQ chicken. Sam continued to show his irritation, protesting that I was not allowing him to put matters right - so I suggested that he might apologise for his behaviour, acknowledge that the food as delivered was below par, and look at addressing the original issue of portion size.Needless to say there was no apology, but after circa 10 minutes I received a plate of extra chips and a bowl of peas but no extra chicken, all delivered by Sam who continued to protest that in his view there was nothing wrong with my original meal. I repeated my original assertion. Sam once again became very agitated accusing me of being unreasonable and abusive. I thought at one stage that he was about to ask us to leave. Not a good experience!

What a great name for a pub!! We only decided on a short drive from Swansea to Reading and ended up in the back of beyond!! Seriously though, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Staff were friendly, service was great, place was spotlessly clean (including the loos!!) We ordered food (well cooked and presented) and hot drinks, bargain!!!! I do not know how they can supply so much for so little money!! More power to you Mr Martin!!! We can always rely on a Wetherspoons to deliver what the customer wants and at a realistic price!

Visited this place 2 weeks ago after not living in Reading for a while, staff were just as miserable and rude as they were the last time I visited! The actual Pub/restaurant in itself is pretty good as far as Wetherspoons go but the sheer attitude of the management lets it down. The two guys running it, Paul and Jason are just plain rude and have no people skills whatsoever, rather than rectify a problem, they are unhelpful and extremely defensive, and not in a nice way either! I have been a subject of this and have also witnessed their dreadful manner to other people. The Wetherspoons staff in Caversham at the Baron of Cadogan have a completely different approach and couldn't be more friendlier, the staff at the Back of Beyond on the other hand, the complete opposite!! More customers lost!

They simply do not know what costumer service means, I have been treated like I am less than a human being.. they had personal problem against me wich they failed to explain.

A typical Wetherspoon pub. Good selection of sensibly priced real ale coupled with food that you know what you are going to get Clean and tidy attentive and friendly staff.

My sons 18th birthday. I used the app to order food and drinks. I live in Billingham. However the order came through to this establishment.The Staff at The half moon inn Billingham were excellent and attempted to help me.However they were unable to assist. I contacted the manager at The back of Beyond and explained that an error had been made.The manager Paul Millar was rude and abrupt. I am glad i don't live near this pub.I am more concerned I emailed customer services on 3rd November regarding my complaint still no response. I have sent a further email. Hopefully i will get a response.

The Back of Beyond is a great place to meet and eat! Friendly staff, quality service (exclude Josh?) and reasonable priced. Well worth a visit.

My first visit with my daughter we had breakfast which was lovely arrived quickly even though it was quite busy , a lovely outside area , prices were very good would def use again , well worth a visit

Pretty much what you'd expect from a Wetherspoons, nice pub, good selection of beer, decent reasonably price food, decent service. Plan to go again.

Not a bad place to go for a quick drink. Sits in a good spot with a view over the canal. Generally one of the quieter places of this chain in Reading.

Roomy large premises. Part of Wetherspoon group. Wide range of well kept beers and wide menu. Cheap prices and special offers fantastic value . Prompt service and good portions. Clean toilets.

Had a great afternoon during the SW Cider Festival and had the most amazing 14 oz Steak - Cooked perfectly - Served on Time and for a Quality Price. A nice Day - Happy Staff and very chilled. Friday 3rd August

Nice atmosphere, food served till 11pm. Possible to eat by the river, friendly staff. I suggest ordering gourmet options

I took my son for lunch there on Sunday, 10th. June (I have been abroad, which explains my delay in writing this). We sat in the garden there, chose our meals from the menu and then I went to the bar to order.There were two members of staff serving customers at the bar tills farthest from the street entrance. As there was no one else standing on my side of the bar and no other member of staff serving, I stood between the two tills waiting to be served. Both the barmen looked at me, but were involved in serving.The older barman at the very end of the bar was in a discussion with some young customers about whether he should serve them as some of the group were under 18. At the next till the barman of about 40 was serving a couple who were deliberating over what to eat and drink. This went on for several minutes during which time the second barman observed me several times.Meanwhile a young man came into the bar area in what looked to me like a kitchen uniform and proceeded to do things on the back shelves which I thought was replacing glasses and bottles. He didn't look at the other customers, nor at me. When he was returning from the street end of the bar, I moved round to the right side of the couple indicating that I wanted to be served, but he didn't look right at me and walked purposefully straight past out of the bar area, but I was sure he had seen me and so had the barman. So I presumed he was kitchen staff and not serving and went back to standing between the two groups and waited to be served.In the corner of my eye I saw a man walk into the pub from the street. He looked around and then walked up to the bar. Straight away, the young man who had been stacking bottles and glasses went up the bar and served him.Since I had been standing about five minutes waiting to be served, I felt extremely frustrated and my reaction was to shrug my shoulders and put out my hands in exasperation saying “what's going on? I was next”. The middle barman serving the couple looked at me and said “You should've stood over there”, indicating a place to the right of the couple where, in fact, I had stood when the younger barman had totally ignored me.I said “What do you mean?” The barman looked at me and said “You should've stood over there to get served". I said “There were only two barmen serving and I was standing between you in the queue waiting to be served”. Then in a very sneering and autocratic manner he repeated “You should've stood over there. Better still, you can go and stand outside”.By this time I was feeling quite astounded that a barman could speak so rudely to me. I had not raised my voice, I had not sworn, I had just expressed my frustration at someone else being served before me when I had been standing there so long. Plus, there had been no apology for the poor service.I said “What do you mean?” He said “You can go outside, I'm not serving you”. I was quite confused, I went up to the younger barman and said “Will you serve me please?” He said “I can't'. I said “Why not?” He said “Because he said so” smirking and just walked off.I said “I want to see the manager” and the middle barman said “I am the manager”. By that time I was so angry that he could let his staff behave like that and behave worse himself, I said “Well you're a rubbish manager. What's your name?” He said “Paul” and started to walk away. I said “Paul what?” He said “Miller” and walked off.I was in a state of total shock. Not only had a barman been extremely rude to me, he turned out to be the manager. He had seen me arrive, seen me waiting, seen me being ignored by the young barman and had not said anything. He could have quite easily apologised and told the young man to serve me next, as a good manager would have done. Instead, he chose to go on the offensive to cover up his mistake and disguise his lack of ability as a manager.I then had the extreme embarrassment of having to tell my son that I had been asked to leave as they would not serve me. My son was very disappointed as he was enjoying sitting out in the garden by the river. As we were leaving the garden I quizzed another member of staff about Paul Miller. He did not seem at all surprised at Miller's attitude, but refrained from comment as he had not witnessed the event.We had to pass the bar on the way out. Paul Miller was standing there totally ignoring me. By now I was feeling so angry that I did raise my voice and I told him that I thought he was an extremely rude and useless manager and that I was going to report him. He had nothing to say for himself and was obviously unused to people standing up to him.My view is that Wetherspoon's should demote Paul Miller and put a more competent manager in charge of him and the pub and let him learn that acting, in my opinion, like a little martinet, is not how to do the job properly and that he is letting down the whole company.From there my son and I went to the other Wetherspoon's pub in Reading, The Hope Tap, where we had a very pleasant lunch and the staff were very professional.Today I was asked if I would meet a friend at The Back of Beyond for an evening drink. I said “Not until I know Paul Miller has been replaced”. Then I told my friend what had happened.I feel sorry that I did not report this earlier, but I wrote it down on paper as soon as I arrived abroad, but unfortunately there was no internet to send it. I hope Wetherspoon's take measures to reprimand Paul Miller and give him further training in how to better manage his bar staff and how to retain customers rather than lose them.I reported all this to J D Wetherspoon Customer Services on my return a few weeks ago, but they could not be bothered to reply.

After being dissapointed with my visit too the Hope Tap I decided to visit this Wetherspoons. What a difference great food great ales graet service.

I didnt catch his name, but around 35 year old bartender service was absolutley terrible. I went to have a nice drink with some friends, one of them forgot there id so naturally did not drink. We were sat outside and the staff member came out and said we must all leave after this drink because the girl was not drinking. I asked him what was wrong as we are not doing anything illegal. His response was “I am not going to babysit you all night to make sure she doesnt drink”. Absolutley disgusting when we were having a nice quite drink. I responded by asking to speak to a manager, and he replied “dont back chat me and get out after that drink, im not serving you anymore”. He never got the manager either. We did not want to cause a fuss so we left, while walking past said bartender, he laughed at us and called up d**k heads. I have never been so shocked to a persons behaviour in a customer facing role. I have sent a complaint to head office about his behaviour and hopefully he will learn that speaking to people like rubbish because he is having a bad day, is not on atall! I dont advise to go here atall!

I had the sweet potato, chick pea and spinach curry which was great. I also ordered a panini for my daughter. When I asked the barman if it came with a drink he said 'we will do the food order first'. Sorry!!! The server couldn't muster a smile. Last time I was here the lady behind the bar was 'joking' with a customer by dropping the f-bomb. Please - a modicum of customer service. It feels like the staff really don't care. I think next time I will pay a bit more and go somewhere friendlier.

what can i say about this weatherspoons, i am a frequient breakfast lover and always find the breakfast great value and today was no exception, i have seen bad reviews for the place but on my visit (quite early in morning) it was not full of people getting drunk snd the staff and service was good, i do like the bottomless coffee as thats a nice touch.

Went in with family. Before ordered anything was informed I could have no more than two drinks because we had children in party. OK. Thanks for the info! May be see what we actually wanted first. Awful service.
