Despite having booked for Sunday lunch much earlier in the week it became apparent when we confirmed numbers with them on Saturday that Bacchus had no record of our initial reservation. We remade the booking as planned for Sunday. We arrived at 12 (the first customers there), ordered drinks and asked to be seated only to be met with blank looks - it seems that in a space of less than 24 hours our booking had again been lost.

Starter of soup was really nice. Roast pork was good - big portions with amazing crackling. Dessert of chocolate cherry mouse was okay but nothing special.

I wouldn't have gone but for tastecard (only for dinner). Overpriced and limited menu otherwise. i love my steak but didnt feel confident enough to chance it here on my first visit. The only good thing is the Sunday roast.

I used to live near this pub and popped by for the occasional meal so it was nice to come back and visit! Unfortunately the atmosphere although conducive to an entertaining night was lacking in clientale...but the friendly staff and lovely smells from the kitchen made us feel welcome at once.We decided to have a cocktail and were asked questions to gage which drink would suit us both. It was nice to have that one on one attention with the staff not always possible in a busy establishment. We ordered a selection of bar snacks including mac and cheese croquettes with bacon mayo which were ridiculously strange but very yummy! We also have the chicken wings with an absolutely delicious blue cheese sauce. The chicken was a little dry but the lashings of sauce made up for it. Finally we had some beetroot hummus which seems to be all the rage at the moment! It was lovely and fresh. All in all it was delightful. Great food, great staff, great environment just lacking in other people! Get down there guys theres a good time to be had!

My girlfriend and I took some family and friends to this place at the weekend. It was a Saturday night at 8pm and the place was empty which I thought was strange but nonetheless we sat down for dinner.I'm not a fussy eater at all. I'm also the kind of guy that clears his plate at every meal! Sadly, not here.I had the Black Pudding Sctoch Egg to start. The outer layer was extremely salty tasting, and I was concerned that perhaps it was undercooked. The egg itself had been overcooked and was quite hard and tasteless. I left half of it in case the pork was indeed dangerous.I then order a £30 Filet steak. £30 for a steak should mean you get a chef who knows what he's doing. In all my life I've never left half of a filet steak on the plate until this weekend. The steak was again extremely salty to taste, as if it had been heavily over-seasoned. I asked for rare but what I actually got was burnt on the outside and raw on the inside. The pepper sauce tasted like bovril, as did the red wine sauce (my friend ordered this) I suspect this was a key ingredient (or maybe the OXO instant gravy mix that you can see in the window of the kitchen when you go out into the garden)We ordered a Strawberry Mess for dessert to share. It was made with tinned strawberrys (despite it being the height of summer and strawberrys being in season and widely available) so was very very sickly sweet, to the extent that we ended up leaving it too. This is not something we do often or lightly.I actually mentioned it to the waitress (who was very nice). She apologised but we didn't hear from the chef or get any recourse on the bill.

Just got back from yet another unsuccessful meal at Bacchus. I am not inclined to write reviews positive or negative despite eating out nearly every night of the week. However it now about seven times in a row where I have gone back to Bacchus to have a lovely meal and yet again it was awful. What was good- staff really nice, although tonight a little bit slow, normally great, wine is good. What was bad- Over priced for average food- eg much better food at Marksman Pub and almost a third off the price. Burger- totally poor meat, wet burger bun, strange fancy sounding mayo in the bun which was really quite bad. when ketchup and mayo requested very small portion brought and then only after asking again were more small amounts brought. Veal was so rare the person eating it asked to send it back for more attention, and it was without enough gravy/ wetness so this arrived after two promptings. The fish pie (which can be a delish main dish) was also weird and quite unappealing. There were 4 of us eating and all found the food bad. I own and run a cafe and eat out almost every night at nice restaurants, so I know what is possible and what could be done with this pub. It's a shame as I live one minute from the place and would love to be able to eat, drink and be merry there more than a few times a month. Also if there are problems with food, although the guy serving us was lovely, when asked for the owners contact details he could only give us a comment card. This should be re-thought if the owners want to have people coming in more than once. I know chefs have been an issue at the pub as once a staff member talked very freely about this over 2 years ago but really the problem is the chef and the menu as it rest of the place is ok and quite inviting.

I've been to Bacchus before, and had good food, but always on a weekday lunchtime, when the place was quite quiet, so we were well looked after. This time, a group of six of us arrived on a Sunday at 12.45pm, for lunch. The place was open, and we seemed to be the first to arrive. We were told that the kitchen didn't open until 1pm (no warning sign about that anywhere) and that they hadn't even printed off the menu for Sunday lunch yet. We were served drinks (rather reluctantly, it seemed). By 1.10pm, the menus still hadn't been printed. At about 1.20pm, a waitress brough menus, and we ordered. Our starters arrived at around 1.45pm. They were excellent.By 2pm, the place was packed! Our main courses arrived at around 2.20pm - an hour after we had ordered, and it was very clear that many people who had arrived, and ordered much later than we did, had already been served. The food, when it did finally arrive, was good, although the fact that a couple of the main dishes were only tepid, bordering on cool, said to us that they had been sitting somewhere for a long time, waiting to be served to us.For what is no more than a gastro-pub, Bacchus is really quite expensive. The fact that clearly neither the kitchen staff nor the waiting staff could cope with what was a busy Sunday lunch service is NOT to their credit. If they want to charge premium prices, the customer has the right to expect premium service, as well as excellent food! When we asked for the bill, the manager was informed by us of our less-than-satisfactory experience. To his credit, he apologised to the whole table, and knocked 10% off the final bill. This made up, in small part, for our disappointment. However, it may be some while before I give them another chance.

Went for lunch with 3 friends - disappointed - food was ok - nothing to be excited about - chicked was dried out and the roast spuds were very dry - you can get this sort of roast in any ordinary pub - don't bother it is nothing to write home about - the aubergene salad was highly expensive for what it is at 15 quid - definitely a rip off !! The roasts were also overpriced - don't bother - wine was good and for a glass about 5.80 - service was pushed - only one staff member - shame - wont bother to go back there again - sorry

I enjoyed my burger here. The whole experience was uncomplicated, the service non-intrusive (I was on my own and wanted to read my book). The burger was excellent. The only two minor moans I'd have are that the lighting was poor and the burger came with a lot of extras that weren't listed in the menu (which was otherwise not short on adjectives).I will certainly be back next time I'm in the area, maybe for the quiz night they run every Monday.

Have had some really good roasts here but on this occasion it was not good for me or my fellow diners. The meat was tough, sort of off tasting. The veg was undercooked ( I.e. essentially raw) their potatoes do slathered in goose fat as to just taste of cholesterol and the gravy insipid. The Yorkshire was good. Come on guys you can do better than this.

Really amazing prawns and their steak is also fantastic - and it comes with a lovely peppercorn sauce. Must try! The menu is not overcomplicated and is kept quite short which is always a good sign. The prices are reasonable and if you have a Tastecard, you get 50% off the food bill which makes it an absolute bargain. The surroundings are a bit grim (it's not the nicest part of Hoxton) but this place is a hidden gem that is definitely worth a visit or two!

I recently decided to spend my 30th birthday dinner here as I thought I'd try something new. I had read reviews from Trip Advisor and Top Table and it seemed like it would be a great place to eat. The area the restaurant is situated looked a bit scary to walk down and I had a "popper" thrown at me by a gang of young boys. Lets just say I was glad I had my husband with me. On arriving to the restaurant I thought I would put the location behind me and try to enjoy the evening with my close friends and family. We arrived at 7.30pm and dinner wasn't served til 10.30pm and when it finally arrived the roast duck I ordered looked like it was still quacking. I like my meat rare but it shouldn't have looked like a beating heart, I had to ask the chef to cook it again. Another surprise was the prices I looked at the menu on their website and the prices seemed reasonable as I didn't want to feel awkward by making my friends pay for an expensive meal. Unfortunately the website hadn't stated that there would be an added 20% for VAT, I had assumed this would be reflected in the prices they show on their website. Aside from the good service from our waiter and the nice interior, I would not recommend this restaurant and I definitely won't be eating here again.

Great (Victorian?) pub on Hoxton Street with small patio area at the back and three smaller rooms upstairs available for private hire. Standard pub decor although the appalling paintings near the kitchens should have stayed in the London Transport Lost Property office where they must have been abandoned. Sunday lunch was very busy, loud voices from every table and music above that, although a perfectly pleasant Aretha Franklin Best Of. On repeat. The punters were of mixed ages and table sizes ranged from one to eight. Unfortunately, children are allowed into the pub so noise levels would be frequently heightened with shrieks/cries. Sunday’s menu was dominated by a good selection of roasts for around £15 and portions were generous and tasty, although no crispy roast potatoes. The smaller dishes on offer were less impressive due to the disproportionate cost-to-serving size ratio. Service was attentive but a little ‘hovery’, whisking any finished plates as soon as possible. This is not a beer lovers’ pub – only one on tap which was empty on our visit, and two small expensive bottled beers – and they make no claims to the contrary, specifying their interest in wines. Kids and inadequate provision for beer is not my definition of a pub, Sunday or not, so I won't be going back.

My favourite eatery when in London has now begun serving brunch on Saturdays from 10.00am. Most hotels ask you to checkout by 11 and eat breakfast before 10am. No I can checkout and have a late breakfast in comfort before heading back to Stansted for my flight home. This is a new opening time when the Hoxton market is open so a nice way to enjoy relaxed Saturday morning. The management were eager to ask for feedback which is always nice to know. I tried the French toast with fresh fruit, bacon rasher and maple syrup - mmmm. My companion had a vegetarian breakfast. We both enjoyed our choices.

Went here last night whilst in the area on the strength of great reviews on TA.Arrived to find it was quiz night in this pub/restaurant. (Questions seemed easy so get yourself here for the £50 bar tab prize!) It was pretty quiet but it was a Monday in mid-January so not a surprise. Sat at a table near the front only to find a draft blowing through the door so asked to be moved and that was well handled.Had a pint of TT Landlord which was fantastic - could have drunk many more!Ordered soup and the whole mackerel. Soup was well presented and sourdough accompaniement was great. However soup could have been hotter. The mackerel was lovely but again seemed on the cool side. It was also crispy on top but rather soft underneath so my conclusion is that the waiting staff didn't get it out quickly enough.Ordered a second pint and had to remind the waitress when it didn't arrive.Asked for bill and had to ask a second time some minutes later - waitress very apologetic. Amazing given how few diners were in.So, in summary I may have been a 'Quiet Monday' victim. The food was flavoursome and well prepared if it had been hotter. I'm tempted to return but suspect even if I did it might not match the hype.

Having heard from many friends how great Bacchus is we thought we would give it a go. So glad we did, it is without doubt one of the best Sunday roasts in one of he nicest places with even nicer staff we have eaten in.Where to start? Rare aged roast beef with all the trimmings including a Yorkshire pudding so huge it could have been a meal on its own. Looking over our shoulders for a sneaky peak the pork, lamb shank and chicken on others plates fared just as favourably. Desserts of sticky toffee pudding, apple and fruit crumble and more and a selection of thefinest cheeses only added to our joy.A special thank you to Arick and Lauren and all of the staff who were welcoming, friendly, efficient and run off their feet! Nothing was too much trouble and "finer establishments" could do well to send their staff there for some training.Xmas lunch booked (prior to this because of all the happy hype) I am now looking forward to a great day with great food and fine company.Definitely worth a visit.A vast selection of wine choices by the glass or bottle, meant we could choose a wine that both complimented and suited our preferred individual tastes.A very special mention to Arick and Lauren for being so friendly, helpful and just plain nice, a rarity in some of the "finer establishments" we have visited, and indeed to all the staff.Christmas lunch booked and looking forward to bringing others to sample the place that is the Bacchus.Try it you won't be disappointed .

The freezing temperatures of last Sunday were asking for Sunday roast and red wine. As my friends recommended Bacchus’s Sunday roast and the place in located stone throw away from where I live, it seemed an obvious choice. I want to stress I trust no one, or almost no one, when it comes to restaurant recommendations so I had no raised expectations. The place feels very good from the start – you feel at home the moment you walk in. The front of the house service quickly located our reservation and was happy to offer drinks and snacks while we were waiting for more friends to arrive. The sirloin Sunday roast, slow-cooked for 10 hours, was delicious, and so were the vegetables that come with it – think goose fat- roasted potatoes! The meant itself was very good quality and cooked to perfection. The apple and berry crumble was a bit of a disappointment on the lumpy custard and sandy crumble front. The house Merlot lived up to the bed reputation of house wines in this country – a bit on a rough side. All the drawbacks however, were made up by the friendly and efficient service and I will go back and try another dessert and have more roast. There is just one more thing: what is wrong with radiators in the toilets?
