We had dinner here recently and we're both a little disappointed. There was nothing wrong with the food or service but it didn't feel special for the prices they charge. If anything we felt the service was over attentive. The seabass carpaccio was a bit tasteless though the dressing on the courgette was delicious and all we could taste. The bread basket was a bit small. Main courses were OK but nothing outstanding. If we're going to spend over £170 for 2 people we'll go elsewhere next time.

Recommended for Seafood & Wine. Be sure to try the calamari. Since the operations manager is Turkish, you can ask any questions you want. It's a place where mostly local people come and know it, definitely check it out. It is recommended that you have it done. The flavors are very good. 👍🏻🦐🦑

Love these guys. They're so good. Top notch food, excellent location with one of the best views of Bermondsey Street (try sitting outside facing the street - you'll want to get pictures!) and and the service is outstanding. Loved the place! Everything from the service and the atmosphere to the food quality and presentation was outstanding. All the staff are very welcoming, knowledgeable and helpful in describing the dishes and suggesting wine pairings. A special notice should go to the extra virgin olive oil menu that could be picked for the bread basket (as well as bought from the restaurant). Can highly recommend the oysters tasting, sea bass carpaccio from the starters, Cornish squid and linguine with prawns for the main, the quality of ingredients is excellent and the flavors are nicely balanced. The tiramisu as a dessert is one of the best out there! You will come not just for a great meal, but for an amazing food experience!

I’ve always loved Italian food so was excited to experience Baccala for the first time and they truly delivered. Our host Elif was warm, friendly and engaging and seated us at a cosy little table right nexto the kitchen separated by a small glass sheet: here we could see the care and dedication the kitchen team took with every single detail of every single dish. Truly a feast for the eyes. Happy engaged chefs laughing, smiling and super focused on delivering excellence with flair. The head chef even popped to our table to say hi. Christian our server was fabulous at talking us through dishes and getting us some great wines to pare. Our oyster starter with 3 different types complemented by the home made Tabasco was incredible. BUT the main dish potato gnocchi, clams etc was probably the best pasta dish I’ve had in my life. Thank you Baccala for a truly exceptional evening. I will be back very soon!!

Amazing food! Tiramisu is a top notch, highest quality in London you can get! Service is also nice! I liked the homie feeling this place created. The only thing - they need to improve outside tables - it wasn't busy but tables are too close to each other if the place would be full - you would definitely feel isolated for sure.... Also restroom downstairs is very small (only for one person) and is quite dark with minimum lighting. I understand is for modern minimalistic design and interior. But I have a feeling if place would have been full - I wouldn't have enjoyed experience for washing hands or waiting in the queue for restroom use. So something to think about while going during busy days. But overall highly recommend for an amazing food! And wine was also good btw.

I have been to Baccala previously however, the second visit was an utter disappointment. The food was not as great and something felt off, informed the manager that we weren’t happy of the catch of the day which was bland and he just took on feedback than helping us replace or deduct. Since the weekend, 2/4 guests have got food poisoning from the Oysters and informed the restaurant, they were defensive and claimed no one else reported any issues, which is what they have done for other negative reviews. They aren’t so helpful, therefore, we wouldn’t recommend this place

Enjoyed a delightful set lunch with my partner last week at a nearby restaurant we'd never tried before. Regret not discovering it sooner, as the cuisine is truly exquisite. Admittedly, I hesitated initially due to its seafood and wine focus, which aren't my preferences. However, we decided to give it a try and were pleasantly surprised. We indulged in a couple of appetisers; I opted for the vegetarian pasta while my partner savoured the mussels carbonara. For dessert, we both had the tiramisu, which was exceptionally creamy and possibly the best I've ever tasted. I'm tempted to go back and ask for it again. The contemporary and relaxing interiors complemented the experience, and the staff were wonderfully amiable. Without a doubt, we'll be returning.

I finally managed to try Baccalà and I’m ecstatic! I’m an Italian living in London for 10 years and I can tell you this restaurant is on my top 3 favourite Italian restaurants in London and on my top 5 restaurants in London in general!!! I loved it. Let's delve into the highlights of my extraordinary dining adventure. The starters were a symphony of flavors and colors. The sourdough bread, accompanied by artisanal guttiau bread and a selection of exquisite extra virgin olive oils, set the stage for what was to come. The Raggia oil, with its robust flavor profile and silky texture, was an absolute revelation. I had a very refreshing limoncello spritz. Also, the roasted octopus with colonnata lard and the whipped salted cod on polenta croutons were exceptional. Paired with Inzolia white wine, light and crisp. Moving on to the mains, The sardines with parsley bread and puntarelle salad offered a refreshing burst of flavors, while the monkfish with guanciale, wild fennel, broad beans, and chicory was a masterclass in culinary perfection. Each dish was expertly paired with a fine Cirò Bianco, elevating the dining experience to new heights. Dry and well-balanced. Of course, no Italian meal would be complete without pasta, and Baccalà certainly did not disappoint. The potato gnocchi with clams, turnip tops, and bottarga was a heavenly indulgence, perfectly complemented by the crisp and fruity Grechetto Umbria wine. And let's not forget about dessert, where Baccalà truly excels. The classic tiramisu was a decadent delight, while the clementine millefeuille with sambuca pastry cream was a delightful surprise. I loved it, did I say that already?!

What started as a promising dining experience with the most delicious olive oil and sourdough bread, ended as a complete fiasco. The £25 sea-bass carpaccio was topped with pine nuts that were overpowering. You could not taste the fish or the fennel citrusy sauce. The portion was ridiculous for that price point. Then came the gnocchi with wild mushroom in the weirdest combination - black olives, turnips, and chunks of cooked garlic. Everything was so bitter because of the turnips. I also had a leftover strong tanning feeling in my mouth from the pine nuts. It was bad. The first time they brought the dish it was also very spicy. Spicy gnocchi is an abjection. Spicy gnocchi with wild mushrooms is insane. I cancelled my second plate as I was not risking to get another fiasco and explained to the server what was wrong. She replied “we are sorry we did not live up to your expectations”, as if my expectations to get a decent plate of gnocchi for £20 plus was something out of the extraordinary. She also included the dish in the bill although they managed to screw it not once, but twice. The service was not bad, but lacking professionalism in detail. I had to remind the server about the wine a couple of times and the things were coming out quite hectic. They seemed overwhelmed on a Saturday night. We left and had an amazing cod at Pizarro next door. Happy I did not waste some extra money there.

I don't like writing negative reviews so I hope this is fair and balanced. We booked in advance and informed when we were booking that one of us had an intolerance to dairy. The waitresses were good at pointing out which dishes to avoid which was helpful. I ordered oysters for starters which were lovely. My main was salt cod which was nice but there wasn't enough veg to balance the saltiness of the cod. Unfortunately they couldn't offer any dairy-free options for dessert - they had run out of chocolate sorbet so offered to cut up some fruit. We should have taken a picture because it wasn't much - a banana cut up, peeled tangerine pieces and some pomegranate. The worst part was they tried to charge £10 for a fruit plate. We asked them to take some money off and they took off £3. Apart from the fruit plate, the meal was okay and the service was good. We left with mixed feelings. Unfortunately I won't be visiting again.

We enjoy most of dishes but when i found one of the langostine was smelly rotten we couldn't eat any more i show to the staff and they come back to tell that was nothing wrong with that and they offer to remake the dish. Well the smell didn't go away even after i wash my hands. I know is not there fold that langostine was bad but they could at list agreed apologise and then offered to make a fresh one. I wasn't looking for any refund or free dish but a defensive answer like that on something very obvious definitely will not leave me happy.

First of all, the 2 waitresses are exceptionnal, they are smiling, engaging they fully understand what it means to work in the business of hospitality. Secondly the food: amazing the chef knows what he does and is enhacing the products and cooking from Sardegna. The concept of sharing certain dishes is very smart. Desserts are excellent. The bill was a bit excessive £178, but we might have been carried away. They have to find something, to avoid to receive all this cold air when opening the entrance door. All and all, a fantastic restaurant to visit as much as possible.

Delicious food and excellent service. I had the roasted octopus with colonnata lard, marinated peppers, olives and basil as a starter and then the monkfish stewed with guanciale, wild fennel, green beans and sea fennel as a main. The pricing is strange as the difference between the starters, mains, and pasta dishes are minimal. it was suggested that we have one of each (starter, pasta dish, main) however we decided to stick to two courses. For those curious about the pasta, I did try some of my friends spaghetti vongole and that was also very tasty. We didn't have alcohol, but the place has a dedicated sommelier, so it's a great place for those who want to make sure to have an appropriate pairing with their meal. The total for my friend and I (starter, main/pasta, hot drink and service charge) was about £59 each, which I felt was appropriate given the quality of the food and service.

We requested a table for 3 for my mom’s birthday and got a lovely table at the dining room downstairs. The atmosphere was cozy and comfortable. The kitchen layout was great with glass doors allowing us to see the busy, dedicated behind-the-scene moments between chefs. We enjoyed the pasta dishes very much while drinking a nice bottle of Roma wine that the house sommelier recommended. Our host Christian was attentive, charming and very caring throughout the meal. Glasses were filled frequently , food served fast and prepared with care. The restaurant is squeaky clean. When the time came for dessert, Christian brought over two lovely dishes and brought the whole team to sing happy birthday to my mom. Overall, we had a great time and definitely would love to come back. Thank you Christian and the rest of the team for creating a memorable night for my family.

We came tonight to celebrate my husbands bday. The seafood was good the burrata was ok but the vegetarian pasta was tasteless, really bad! I have never had such a bad pasta with no flavour in any other restaurant in my life! We ate like 15 percent of the dish and that was it because it literally tasted like regular supermarket pasta cooked in water with no salt. There was no flavour at all. I tried to put salt a pepper but there was no point. We told this to the manager and waiter but all they said was sorry. We still got charged 25 pounds for the worse and most expensive pasta I have ever had. Is important to say that this was a Thursday night and we were the only 2 people in the whole restaurant for the whole night (so is not like they were busy) they didn’t offer to change it or make it better or anything they just say sorry. I really think for the prices in this place you can do sooo muuuch better. We actually told the waiter in the middle of the dinner and all he said was I’m sorry instead of maybe saying we will fix it or something (remember we were the only people in the restaurant all that night so it was not that they were super busy) they just didn’t care. We told the manager when we were leaving but the waiter that was taking care of us knew because we let him know a few mins after he brought the food. And yes we took the leftover because the waiter he packed it with the other food we asked him to pack but not because it was good!

Baccala’ had been recommended to me by a friend so during my last trip to London I decided to try it out. The restaurant was very busy, oozing with good vibes. A look around revealed patrons enjoying their experience, which further raised my expectations. I tried the Oyster of the “day”, from Ireland, the pentolaccia with Chitarrine pasta and seafood and the almond panda cotta. The oysters were amazing: super fresh, meaty and tasty just like I like them. They were accompanied by a slice of lemon and a spicy sauce. The ensemble of flavors was a winning combination. Despite the portion of 6 pieces, they were so tasty that I ordered another portion. The pasta was excellent. Perfectly cooked and with great amount of seafood, again very tasty. The portion was perfect, especially since it is egg pasta that can be quite filly. The final note of this great culinary journey was strung by a beautifully presented panna cotta, featuring a delicate blend of flavors. A truly artsy and delicious combination. Each serving was paired with a different type of wine after the recommendation of the host Fabio, who made sure -along with the very attentive Christian and the rest of the team- that everything was perfect. The Chef Moreno also came to greet and make sure everything was matching my expectations. The atmosphere was another highlight of the evening. The staff goes above and beyond to make sure you will leave with a smile and great memories and that shows in how cheerful everybody was. All in all a really fun evening and a great experience. I will definitely come back and unreservedly recommend this place.

FOOD POISONING - AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Wanted to try this local restaurant to compare to other local favourites (40 Maltby Street, Trivet, Casse Croute, Cafe Murano, Pique Nique, Jose’s, Garrison etc.) All of which I can wholly recommend! We were violently ill after eating the seafood here - clearly food poisoning - having had food poisoning from seafood once before, I know what it feels like. Similarly my partner is a trained medical professional. We reported this to the restaurant, who only questioned/interrogated/accused us; they asked why we didn’t go to the hospital immediately in the middle of the night, and subsequently forced us to provide a stool sample to a third party, despite a GP advising clearly that such a sample would be futile. Arduous and embarrassing process to go through, only for the result to be “inconclusive.” Which clearly would have always been the case given, as our GP initially advised any sample would be futile. Fabio (I assume manager) was incredibly rude and abrasive throughout the process, and offered no reimbursement or reconciliation, simply pointed to an inconclusive ‘computer says no’ third party report. We’ve been to hundreds of restaurants in London, with the bulk being Michelin guide or higher, and I’ve never had to report food poisoning or hygiene failure. I would have expected Baccala to be keen to rectify their failure and encourage us to come back, but rather, they dug their heels in and tried to belittle us. By far and away the worst experience I’ve ever had with a restaurant in the U.K. or overseas.

As many others have said, all in all a great seafood place with great ingredient sourcing and execution. Particularly appreciated the friendly and professional service, the olive oil menu and the choice of wines by the glass. A humble suggestion would be to add a couple of small plates of greens for those of us who like a little fibre in their food, as the menu was curiously devoid of them. I was kindly offered an improvised salad when I remarked on this, which tasted great but was still mostly fruit. Will be back, hoping to find some bietole, agretti, puntarelle, radicchio, cicoria or some such on the menu next time 🙂

The food, in particular the olive oil was quite good. The fish while tasty was lacking in any form of carb. The big thing though, 4 out of 6 of us (who ate the monkfish) did end up feeling quite sick the next day however!

This review is based solely on the olive oil tasting. We stopped in mid afternoon to do the tasting. The restaurant was quiet as it would be between lunch and dinner, and we did not eat anything. The service was great and included nice touches like complimentary house sparkling water. For the tasting you buy a portion of bread, and it comes with one olive oil, and you can add more from the selection of 7 oils at £3 per oil. This is one of the few restaurants where olive oil is showcased. The 3 we tried were excellent. Two of them were blends and one was a single varietal. They were from different parts of Italy and they were presented nicely with background information by the chef (owner?). My only criticism would be that the very nice sourdough bread actually has a strong flavour which does not always agree with the oils. A milder bread would allow the oil flavours to stay at the forefront. If you are eating at this restaurant and you don't know much about olive oil, do yourself a flavour and learn what good olive oil tastes like! If you are already an aficionado of olive oil, then you will be in heaven 😁 We did try some wines. The chardonnay by the glass was excellent and tells me that they probably have a very good wine list. Given the opportunity, I think I would definitely eat at Baccalà.

Decent Mediterranean restaurant with classic Italian dishes on the menu, great wine menu and friendly staff. The restaurant is situated directly on Bermondsey High Street, which is totally lively and vibrant - a joy seeing people walk by whilst enjoying food and wine. The appetisers (Tuna Tartare) was incredibly, paired with asparagus, which turns out to be a fantastic combination. The mains (tagliatelle with saffron and mushrooms and linguine with prawns) were quite bland and served at room temperature, which was not enjoyable but the head waiter immediately took the dishes back to the kitchen and returned them hot very quickly. They also gave excellent white and red wine recommendations. The tiramisu for dessert was also very tasty. Will definitely go back and enjoy the wonderful neighborhood that Bermondsey is alongside the good overall package this restaurant has to offer, albeit at a rather upper-end price point.

My partner and I arrived here with high expectations due to the hype and price of the items. We were served starters and wine very quickly, but then we were asked to move tables so a bigger group could be seated, and it seems our main order got lost. We waited 45 minutes + between our starter and main with no acknowledgment of any mistakes being made. We were given a bottle of wine at the end, but the experience soured things for us unfortunately, as the food was quite nice.

The restaurant is lovely. Great service. Everything is very contemporary. Even the portions. The food was lovely, especially the sauces. However main courses are basically just starters. So small. The money spent was not adequate for the value. It was yummy but super overpriced. That was the first time I went to an Italian restaurant and left hungry.
