Ayos Restaurant Grill & Bar Meze in St Albans

I walked in because they had a special lunch menu on for 12-4pm to try it. As I used to live in St Albans when it first opened but never managed to do whenever I happened to walk past. The food is awesome, service is great, with friendly staff and management. If you happen to have allergies they have great selection for most including lots of Gluten Free choices including a nice desserts HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, but if you are coming in the evening definitely book in advance

I recently visited the restaurant for a birthday lunch, and while there were some positive aspects, the experience was somewhat underwhelming overall. The atmosphere was okay, but it could definitely be improved to create a more welcoming and intimate setting, especially for special occasions like this. We ordered a meal for two, and while the octopus was decent, I’ve had better elsewhere, including at Ayos restaurant, where the grilled octopus was far superior. The lamb shish kebab was quite good, but the rice was disappointing—just plain basmati, lacking a nice flavour. The service was also underwhelming. The staff didn’t seem particularly welcoming, which, combined with the lackluster atmosphere, made the experience less enjoyable than I had hoped. While the food had its moments, the rice and the overall vibe of the restaurant definitely need improvement. Overall, I’d rate the experience 4 stars. There’s potential here, but with a more inviting atmosphere and a few tweaks to the food and service, it could easily become a standout dining spot.

The experience started on a less-than-ideal note with the service, as the staff didn’t seem particularly welcoming. While the atmosphere wasn’t unpleasant, it lacked the warm and inviting feel you expect, especially for a special occasion. We ordered a meal for two, and while the octopus dish was exceptional, the rest of the food didn’t live up to expectations. I ordered the lamb shish, and the portion size was surprisingly small for the price. To make matters worse, the rice was simply the worst I’ve ever had in a Turkish restaurant. It was glued together like poorly cooked basmati, which completely ruined the texture. It’s hard to enjoy a dish when such a staple component of the meal falls flat. Although the octopus was a highlight, the lamb and rice left much to be desired. Given the cost, I was expecting much better quality. The restaurant has potential, but there’s clearly room for improvement in both the food and the overall service. I’d hesitate to return unless these issues are addressed.

We booked Ayos for a friends birthday and the food and ambience were great from the Minuty Wine, to the delicious Turkish cuisine and then to top it off great music to entertain us whilst we were at our table. The staff also sang Happy Birthday and brought a dessert for the birthday girl and shots for us all! Thanks for a fab night!

My husband and I dine often at Ayo’s and it is always a pleasure. Fantastic food and fantastic staff. Great value and no matter what day of the week always a great atmosphere. Fridays and Saturdays with live music is an added bonus, but this restaurant never disappoints.

Was great - the chilli sauce and onion salad was lovely with our food. My friend even ended up taking it home for her dad! We would recommend the Adana kebab and the grilled Hellim

A mixed bag I would give 2.5 stars if I could as I’m somewhere in the middle. The mains were tasty, but the portions were small. I had the chicken kofte chokertme which was a bed of creamy chicken (delicious), covered in a bag of what can only be described as sainsburys potato sticks (from the crisps) section. Like I said the chicken was lovely though and the salad too. The starter was even worse value for money in my opinion. £7.90 plus 10% so effectively £8.69 for the tiniest portion of calamari I’ve ever had at a restaurant. 6 pieces some of which were very small. Desert did not save the day. I had the mint chocolate “bomb”. It was not a bomb at all. Described on the menu as having chocolate sauce in the middle, that was barely there and what was there wasn’t sauce it was frozen. So basically it was £7 or £7.70 for a scoop of mini chocolate ice cream in a chocolate shell. Had I know this I wouldn’t have ordered it. Had I known about my two other dishes in advance I wouldn’t have ordered them either. The service was nice in terms of the our server, however we arrived a 7:30, had placed our full order by 7:45, but didn’t receive our mains until after 9. When they did come one of the mains and a side dish were missing for 10 minutes, so most of our meals were on the cold side by the time we all started eating together. And finally the ambience. Loved the music and singing, however overall it was extremely loud and made it very difficult at times to hold a conversation with people who were sitting less than a metre away from me. It’s obviously fine if that’s what you’re looking for, but as I said a little loud of me, so be warned if you’re want to be able to talk easily to the people you are dining with, you might find it a bit difficult (Friday night). I wish them success, the restaurant itself is beautiful, but not great value for me.

We sat down and ordered 2 double Hendricks and tonic. It arrived already mixed with no ice and tasted weird. The waitress told us it was fever tree when in fact it was Schweppes. We ordered calamari to start and 6 minute rings arrived that looked like they came out of a freezer along with a taramasalata and a beetroot dish. They forgot our hummus but eventually brought it. The restaurant had a 50th birthday party and was full but after 45minutes after our starters were cleared we asked how long our mains would be she said we’re busy and then that the chef had a problem. We decided not to stay and asked for the bill and left. Not an enjoyable experience!!

If you’re looking for a good night out, with good food and service and with that extra special ingredient called love, stay away. Awful experience all round.

Probably the worst Saturday night restaurant experience I have encountered. From the noise of an atrocious singer when we walked in to poorly served drinks, starters that were incorrect with a serving of calamari with just six small rings on a plate that appeared to have been defrosted and thrown in a fryer. When we asked where our main courses were, our waitress blamed the late arrival on them being busy - what a surprise for a Saturday night - and then she declared we were being rude when we suggested the manager come and talk to us. Paid for our starters and we left. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!

A fantastic restaurant. Brilliant range of very tasty food and wonderful cocktails. Helpful and friendly staff. I had a truly wonderful evening celebrating my birthday. Fantastic singer great fun to have a dance and enjoy lovely food. Highly recommended.

I attended wedding reception at this restaurant so there was set menu. Loved everything I was served. Lamb shank was best. Excellent service and ambience.

Friendly staff and good food. Staff were very accommodating and helpful which made our birthday celebration all the more special.

Utterly disappointing moussaka. Please take it off the menu.

Very good food at very reasonable price

We visited on Saturday night (2 couples) and had a lovely evening. The atmosphere was great and the live music a treat. For the most part, the food was nice, but the Moussaka was awful. Moussaka is pretty much my favourite dish in the world, I like to eat Moussaka whenever I get the opportunity, and on my recommendation my friend ordered it too.... What a disappointment, it definately wasn't fresh and was awful in so many respects. Sorry Ayo's, you let us down, you let yourselves down, and worst of all you let grandfather Ayo down.

Think I’m too old for this restaurant now. Came on a Saturday night , and knew they had a live singer as have been previously on a Sat night, but the music is now so very loud you can’t even hear yourself think let alone speak to your friends. Couldn’t wait to finish our food and get out of there tbh. Left the restaurant and my ears were ringing so badly, like I’d been in a nightclub all evening. Food was nice though, just won’t ever come back on a Saturday night.

Very good food and atmosphere, but the service was extremely slow, so slow in fact that one of our party had to leave before his main course arrived, we were sat down at around 7.30, we received our starters at 8.55 and our mains at around 10.00, as previously mentioned the food was excellent, but way too long to get it.

The table was booked for 19:30 when we arrived the place was busy, which is a good sign. Very authentic food was lovely and fresh Staff we're welcoming and really helpful. I would definitely recommend and would definitely come back

I’m originally from Cyprus and have been eating this type of cuisine since I was 6 yrs old. The Food was ok , nothing special but definitely overpriced. Service wasn’t personal & disconnected . No passion. Toilet looked old and needs a definite refurb. Sorry but Nothing to ever drive me to return to this restaurant.

Do not eat at this restaurant. My friend and I got food poisoning. I asked them for the ingredients list and they refuse to send them to me. Their customer service recover is atrocious. They are more concerned with their reputation than the welfare and of their customers. Here is the letter I sent you them after speaking with a rude, obnoxious manger on the phone. “Dear Dara, Thank you for your email. However, I must express my disappointment with the response provided. Firstly, let me address the matter of seeking medical attention. Unfortunately, my friend who dined with me and also fell ill after our visit to your restaurant is currently bedridden and unable to visit a doctor, especially considering it is the weekend when medical services are limited. This underscores the severity of the situation and the urgency of addressing it. Additionally, I experienced diarrhoea within a couple of hours after leaving the restaurant. It's worth noting that neither of us had anything to eat yesterday, further emphasizing the likelihood of the illness being linked to our dining experience at your establishment. Your suggestion that our symptoms may be attributed to unknown allergies is both unwarranted and insulting. Neither my friend nor I have a history of food allergies, and to imply otherwise is dismissive of the clear indications of food poisoning. Moreover, your proposal that we undergo allergy testing at our own expense is absurd. If you truly stand by the safety and quality of your food, providing an ingredients list should be a basic measure of transparency. Yet, I have not received this information despite my initial request. Furthermore, your assertion that no other customers reported issues on the day of our visit does not absolve your restaurant of responsibility. Food poisoning can manifest differently in individuals, and the absence of immediate complaints does not discount the possibility of contamination. It is concerning that you are more focused on defending your reputation than addressing the legitimate concerns of your customers. Given these circumstances, I will report this incident to several regulatory bodies and authorities responsible for monitoring food safety standards, including the Local Council's Environmental Health Department, FSA, Trading Standards, EHO, and FHRS. I will also be seeking legal counsel to explore avenues for recourse and loss of earnings due to the severity of the food poisoning. It is evident that, your restaurant needs to uphold the necessary hygiene and food safety standards. I am committed to ensuring appropriate action is taken to prevent others from experiencing similar harm. I expect a prompt response acknowledging the gravity of this situation and detailing the steps you will take to rectify it. Please confirm that you are the manager or the owner and provide your full name.

Lovely ambiance excellent service and great food definitely 5 🌟

Went here for the first time for a date night at the weekend. We love Turkish food so was super excited. Parking is quite limited but it is round the corner from the station so quite easy to find parking etc. When we walked in, the restaurant instantly amazed us. It looked beautiful! When I booked online, I had the choice to choose to sit in the main restaurant or the conservatory. I chose main restaurant as I thought it might feel warmer there. I also got a message to be warned that there is a reservation after us so we had to move after an hour and a half, which for two people is plenty of time. We shared the Cacik and Muska Borek. Both tasted amazing! The Muska Borek was SO good. Better than the ones I had in Turkey last year! For mains, I had the chicken shish whilst my boyfriend had ezmeli kebab chicken. Both of us thought our dishes were super tasty, good portion size. The only downside was that there was an incredibly loud table next to us celebrating a birthday and it meant I had to raise my voice to speak to my boyfriend. But that is not the restaurants fault. Another comment was the music was not as we expected, we thought it would be traditional Turkish music but we mainly heard current songs through the charts and it was quite loud and we personally felt it didn't fit the restaurants theme. Overall though, we had a great time and would return.

Nice interior and good service. However, the food was pretty average and we both got diarrhea and stomach pain after the dinner there. Having been to many Turkish restaurants, I would not recommend this place.

Visited this restaurant with my friend on a Friday night. On our way to the restaurant the Uber driver mentioned that they were really quite over priced for what they offered so our expectations were quite high. Upon entering we walked up to the bar to let them know we had a reservation as opposed to being met at the door.. We were told we can sit anywhere and felt quite left to our own devices so we proceeded to sit in the new glazed area of the restaurant. We reviewed the menus and I had ordered an Adana Kebab with rice and specifically asked for chilli sauce. Being half Turkish I know what I like. My friend ordered a salmon dish with rice. The protions were not big, more fine dining kind. The chilli sauce had to be asked for several times and this is not something I am in favour of especially for the prices on the menu and the type of restaurant this is trying to be. The Adana kebab should be a spicier lamb this was quite bland, but still nice. Finished off with "Turkish Tea" which was more like Lipton in a cup and Baklava which was fresh and nice. We were left on multiple occasions having to call for service and catch eyes the whole time with the waiters amongst waving multiple times to get service. The service let the place down and left a lot to be desired, for this reason we would not be returning.

The food is great. I like the calamari best, it’s juicy, fresh and not being to chewy. I’m surprised it was handled so well! The best calamari I have ever had. The interior of the restaurant is amazing. It’s exotic and warm at the same time. It’s spacious and not many people there. It’s a nice place to chill out with friends in the evening. Would not recommend, waiter was sexist and allowed my boyfriend to change something on his meal but when I asked to change the exact same thing on my meal he wouldn’t allow me to and told me off for trying, ruined the whole experience when the food wasn’t even that bad

The Lamb kleftiko fell off the bone and melted in my mouth. The mash potatoes were glorious. The moussaka was so flavoursome and should come with the choice of a salad.

The BEST restaurant in St Albans! My favourite place to dine. Food is spot on, and cocktails are fantastic! The staff are all very friendly and accomodating and I honestly haven't (yet) been to a restaurant that I think is better. Usually very popular to get in - so book ahead where you can! Have tried to walk in for drinks with my network in the evenings and sometimes can't get in due to them being so busy. It's a very popular place! Atmosphere is amazing too. Great food and service. Best Turkish we have been to in St Albans.

We were disappointed by the lack of enthusiastic passionate waiters. It was our first time at Ayos and would have liked them to welcome us more warmly and sell us the menu. We were quite shocked at how expensive it was - £10 for one tentacle of octopus! £5.90 each for a dollop of hummus and taramasalata. £21 for kebab. The Shish kebabs were average, in my opinion there are better Turkish restaurants in St Albans for the same price with better quality fresher ingredients.

We've walked past this place a few times so decided to give it a go. We booked ahead and got seated. No one rushed to take a drinks order so we had to flag someone down as we had a deadline due to a show. We placed our order for the meal but that was a faff. I asked if I could have chips rather than rice with my chicken shish and you would have thought I'd asked to change the entire dish. The waiter muttered something about not doing amendments on Fridays or Saturdays and they'd be enough chips with my husbands dish to share. So I asked if they could just leave the rice off then given I don't eat it. Again, I was met with mutterings about not being sure if they could do that. Starting to lose patience I said don't bother, I'll just scrape it off myself if it's too much bother. Eventually they did it but it left me far from impressed on their customer service. The food was nice enough although £20 for a chicken shish (and not loads of chicken) and chips wasn't amazing value. They also all seemed unsure when asking about ingredients in sauces on some menu items. Overall, ok but won't be making a return visit.

Good place for Dine in and lovely food.

We went on a weekday evening for a friends birthday and it was sparsely occupied but 3 out of the 4 tables were celebrating birthdays there. We ordered quite a few things and it was suggested we order it together so that the kitchen doesn't get confused and they brought it out separately so that our mains dont get cold but it was quite a while before the mains came out after the starters were over. We ordered 3 starters - hummus with lamb, beef sausage, falafel - they were all delicious and I would definitely recommend For the mains we ordered - adana kofte, chicken casserole, chicken with cream and the chicken lightly wrapped with yogurt which was suggested to me by the Sohib the server. All but the Chicken with cream was wiped clean. My recommended dish was out of this world and I'm craving it every day since. Everything was served with rice as well. The drinks were tasty but I would say the fish bowl is overpriced. Regardless, I would definitely visit again for an amazing Turkish/Kurdish fine dining meal.

Casual family meal on Sunday evening. Although quite empty, the service was poor. The young men working were more interested in the group of 3 women celebrating their birthday - offering shots etc. I had to get up to ask for drinks and went to the bar to ask about a wine. They knew nothing and were unhelpful. I ordered and sat down then was asked after our meal was mainly over how it was? The waiter was shocked I said it was not good and still had not brought my drink. They he said there was an error in the system ?? Although I asked at the bar. The food was not good- small portions of not meagerly presented mixed grill, chewy sweet octopus and non existent limp salad. When we asked for the bill, they plainly said service was removed. Having paid cash we were then made to wait around as they had no changes!

Big expectations for this place but was really let down. The service was non existent, drinks order was quick but had to ask for our food order to be taken, and we were there for nearly 2hrs before our mains arrived - this was after asking 3 times without anyone coming over to explain or apologise! The calamari isn’t fresh, and the food is average and not worth the London prices!

Average food, very poor service; took 2 hours from arrival to getting our main course. When it came it was luke warm so another wait to get it heated up. Very inattentive/disinterested staff. For some reason the moussaka is served with rice which apparently can;t be changed on a Friday or Saturday, so I had to pay extra to get any salad. Very bland moussaka with more peas in it than anything else; hardly any aubergine, gristly meat. Very poor value for money Extremely noisy, very difficult to have any conversation with anyone

Would definitely recommend! I’ve been there 3 times already and if someone ask me to go out in St Albans is the first restaurant that comes to my mind! Love there

I will never get tired of Ayos. The excellent consistency of the food and service is second to none. My mum would like me to quote her “it’s the best, I want to come back tomorrow”.

Great night, great food and fabulous ambience. Staff very attentive and we weren’t rushed to leave the table. Friday and Saturday nights they have a singer who was brilliant, he wasn’t too loud as we could still have a conversation! Will definitely be back.

We’re regular visitors to Ayo’s and it’s never a disappointment. Consistently great food, wonderful service, and a really relaxing atmosphere. I would highly recommend.

When I say this was the best kebab I've had I mean this was the best kebab I've ever had 👌🏻 Lovely pleasant staff and a wholesome owner who came by to check on us and the food. I would highly recommend yogurt lamb beyti - a distinctive flavour than other beytis I've had. Also the salad was at a different level of taste, recommend the Ezme salad too! Very relaxed chilled environment, don't take my word for it - see for yourselves 😁

Although we had a sketchy start with it taking three members of staff to seat us after we gave all three our name upon request and saying that we had booked, it was a lovely evening. The food was very good and our table hosts were very attentive. We went earlier in the evening and it was quite quiet which meant a relaxed ambiance. It is a very trendy looking restaurant as well. We shared hummus, halloumi, sujuk and garlic mushrooms for starters and then had various shish meats for mains, along with a salmon. The meat was cooked perfectly and was nicely marinated. Overall, a nice family evening.

Great food puts you in a great mood. The service and food here is great. 👍 But make sure to make reservations and keep to time cos there is usually a rush on the weekend (starting on Friday) and finding a spot could be difficult.

Ayo's is a good idea, if you like Turkish and Kurdish dishes (the lamb is very delicious). The turkish coffee is excellent.

Lovely family own restaurant. Modern decor with dimmed lighting 😊 The octopus to start was cooked just right & the mixed sish was delicious and very tender, served with rice, salad and garlic/chilli sauces. Staff were relaxed and friendly. Overall a fantastic dinner 😄

Had the most amazing meal yesterday evening. The food was amazing. We changed our table and it was no problem for our waitress Agnes.. She was absolutely superb, we had an extra table added as we ordered so much food can’t wait to return.

This was the second time I’ve been to this restaurant but I won’t go back for a third. The food was tasty when we got some but the staff attitude there was awful. So we settled the bill after the starters and went somewhere else.

Went here on a quiet Sunday evening for an anniversary dinner. Starter was lovely & so was the wine. We ordered Chicken Sarma Beyti & Adana Sarma Beyti. Within the first mouthful of the chicken, something hit my tooth - obviously something rock solid. I took it out my mouth and put it on the side of my plate; thinking it was a one off within the minced meat, I took another bite - and the same thing appeared. Slightly put off by the rock solid bits in my meal, I asked the waiter if I could swap to the Lamb, as my partner wasn't seeming to have the same issue. He basically said no. The manager then came over and patronisingly explained that mince meat tends to have harder bits in it, as it's a combination of various meats. He was so insistent and showed no inclination to take my dish away, that I actually believed him and decided to just eat everything but the meat. My partner kindly swapped some of his lamb for my chicken, so I took a bite from the lamb. Again, a much larger lump hit my tooth. It was honestly rock solid bone. By this point I couldn't physically eat much more as it was making me feel sick seeing the pile of bone crumbs accumulate on the side of my plate. We stopped eating and left our plates as they were. The waiter came over to clear after about 10 minutes of waiting (even though there were only a few other tables), and genuinely asked how our meal was. I explained that I was really disappointed; that I didn't eat any of it, that within just 4 or 5 mouthfuls, they all had rock solid chucks of bone in it. He didn't apologise, he just explained that that is what minced meat is. We asked for the bill. He bought it over, the starter, 2 glasses of wine and both mains were listed + service charge. We were in there for an hour, and had complained multiple times with full plates being taken back to the kitchen. I was quite shocked that he hadn't removed our drinks / the main that I hadn't touched. I again expressed my disappointment, and said that I genuinely could've cracked a tooth. The same manager again explained that the put the meat through the mincer twice, but things still get through. I wasn't born yesterday - meat with bones are the cheapest cuts of meat; the fact the bones were scattered through my dish, is honestly the most unappealing thing a restaurant could serve. He still didn't apologise. I have eaten at many Turkish restaurants and never had bones in the meat so I'm confused why he was so insistent that it was normal. We paid (no service charge) and left. It's a real shame, as we live on the same street and would've been keen to be long term customers if he had resolved it and given us some compensation. We will never return here. (I have read back on these reviews and going back as far as last year, similar complaints have been made of rock hard bones being found in the meat)

Really lovely evening at Ayos. Staff were friendly and attentive and the food was delicious - really fresh and flavoursome. Mojitos were great too! Pleasantly surprised to see how busy it was on a Wednesday night - a sign of the quality of food.

Great fun night with live (loud!) music. Good food, excellent cocktails and reasonably priced. Perfect for birthdays.

The most kindest staff. I organised my parters 30th birthday an un real experience. The staff are so friendly. Would 1000% come back Ufuk and Rodi toke care of us all Night. Brilliant gaff get yourself down here.

Very loud atmosphere, more like a Turkish pub/restaurant. 96+ DB for over 30mins will make you temporarily deaf, and it did🤷🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️! Food was okay, over priced but I suspect a lot of other people may enjoy it. 🤔🤣🍷 Only book if you are happy for it to be a very noisy environment. Website says Glam up but bring your ear plugs. Other weekend day nights might be better, avoid Friday nights. You’ve been warned!!!! I will not go again as plenty of nice places to eat at this price locally. Shame! Management had no real comment apparently!🤔🤷🏼‍♂️
