A table was booked for 7:30pm on a Saturday evening. We arrived promptly (4 of us and a dog) and were told that it was a 45 minute wait for food, we were fine about that and were then told to sit anywhere we wanted in the bar area. The whole pub was quiet and we couldn’t understand why the 45 minute wait was applicable. We all ordered the mix grill (2 x large and 2 x regular), a peppercorn sauce and a blue cheese sauce. After waiting for over an hour, one of the members of staff from behind the bar came to say that our meals were being plated up and would be served shortly. We must have waited another 15-20 minutes before the meals were brought out. All of the mix grills were cooked correctly and served hot. The rump steaks were the best meat on the plates! The homemade onion rings were tasty. Both of the large mix grills should have been served with a piece of liver but this was missing. We wouldn’t recommend the blue cheese sauce or the peppercorn sauce because they were too thin and not enough flavour. The mix grills were a 7/10. If I had to sum up this pub I would say that it is in need of serious updating on the inside and outside , it is stuck in the past. Very uncomfortable chairs, basic toilets and the decoration is from the 1970’s. Serves all the classic pub food.

A lovely pub: great service, the staff was very friendly and made their best to make sure that we had a nice evening. Food was great, as well as the choice of beers. A very nice way to spend the evening and have a delicious meal. The outdoor area is nice as well, with trees and flowers and the overall atmosphere was relaxed and pleasant, no loud noises from people chatting or loud music, just great.

Looks can be totally deceiving - from the outside, and on arrival the pub doesn’t look up to much. It’s clean & tidy on the inside; nicely decorated restaurant and pub area. The staff are friendly and welcoming. We ate here 3 nights; different meals each time. The food is outstanding!! Best pub grub I’ve had in a long while - hot, freshly cooked, presented well. There’s a bit of a wait - you’re eating freshly cooked/prepared food - and it tastes freshly cooked too. The lamb steak and chicken tikka Massala meals were too die for. Good size; proper condiments too - not the sachets which was a nice touch. Excellent children’s menu - even catered well for a fussy 10yr old. The smaller appetite menu is excellent. Just enough for those of filled up on seaside fish & chips and donuts. The carbonara and Bolognaise cooked to perfection. If we lived closer we’d be in every night. Loved it, loved it, loved it. Thank you

We visit this pub for food as often as we can when over in the area. There were 7 of us ages from 6 years to 67. This is a lovely little pub, always welcoming. We had a selection of food, pasta, the steak pie, a steak baguette, liver and onions. In the past we've also had the cottage pie, a cheese burger and chips, gammon and Sunday carvery. All of which were very nice. They also do a doggie dinner and doggie sausages. Date of visit: July 2024

Stopped off on the way to Mablethorpe for our holidays and enjoyed a lovely meal. The pub was what I expected, it was rural, busy with people mainly outside enjoying the weather. The food was excellent, can't fault it and the service was superb. Travelling down from Scotland it was great to experience a right English country pub like the Axe & Cleaver.

We Called in to request a table for 4 adults at 6.30. Was advised that we would be put in the dining room. Arrived at 6.20 and promptly shown to our table. We ordered our food by 6.40 - 3 starters, 4 mains. We were waiting 45minutes for our starters and then a further 45 minutes for our mains once we had finished our starters. We saw or heard nothing from anyone as we waited for our food. The food was tasty and hot once we received it but we were over hungry and fed up!! The waitress apologised for our delay but not to standard I would expect for waiting for 2 hours for our meals. Once we had finished we went to pay. No one asked if we had enjoyed our meals, never apologised for our terrible service but when the service charge request appeared onscreen she cancelled it off straight away so therefore she knew we can’t have been happy!!! We paid £100 in total and left very full but disappointed with the bad customer service we received. We wouldn’t recommend this pub to anyone or if you do choose to book a table then check that they have adequate staff to fulfill customers requirements. I would recommend the Red Lion in Mumby it was very tasty food & outstanding customer service,

Just waited an hour and 45 minutes for starters and a further 30 minutes for mains . Complained and got told “ we only have a small kitchen “ We booked a table for a family occasion and was not told there would be a delay in the food order. If the “small kitchen” can’t cope then they should limit the amount they cater for and communicate with the customers. There were fellow customers who were also waiting. Would not recommend as customer service was atrocious as no updates just excuses that they have a small kitchen

Just managed to grab a table before they closed the kitchen at 8pm. We waited at least 45 minutes for food to be served, soup was nice but my salad was very overpriced for what it was. We were even picked up from and returned to our guesthouse by the owner who was very friendly. The steak pie and fresh vegetables had the tenderest of meat, delicious tasty gravy and was a very large plateful. My sister-in-law’s BBQ chicken was also very hearty and delicious. Called in to book a table whilst out and about. Very welcoming staff behind the bar and the beer was excellent. On booking our table we were offered collection from our caravan site and a return journey home at the end of our evening, this was accepted so none of our party of four would need to drive. Lewis, a very polite and well spoken young man was on time to pick us up and was chatty all the way to the pub/restaurant. We ordered our drinks, told which table we were allocated, sat down to look at the menu then ordered. The meals came altogether so we all ate at the same time. The meals were good and even when we had finished we were not pressured into leaving. When we were ready Lewis drove us back to the site and was as chatty as on the first journey. When chatting we found that him and his family were from an area near to us, what a small world. Would highly recommend to anyone.

It's a local pub, don't expect sumptuous surroundings, but DO try the food.Reasonable prices, well cooked, plenty of it, very tasty. Freshly cooked. My friends and I sat chatting, eating and drinking, eventually my friend went to the bar to pay and asked if they closed during the day...she was told they close at 3pm. This was at 3.40pm. No one rushed us. We were most apologetic but were told it was no problem. How often to you get that in eateries? Well done Axe and Cleaver.

We were a party of 5 adults and 3 dogs......we were seated to a generous sized table with plenty of room for the dogs also. The food was good quality and cooked to order. There was a hood selection for me being vegetarian as I generally struggle for choices. The size of the meals were huge! Great value for money and very tasty.Friendly staff. Will definitely return.

Staying on holiday nearby and this pub was recommended to us. We found the pub very welcoming and popular with the locals which is always a good sign. In summary, the food was excellent, very tasty and generous portions + very good value. Fully recommend if you are looking for a friendly pub with a traditional menu. Thumbs up from us.

Went for Father's Day, meal was unappetising. Pale beef which looked like it had been boiled! No mash potatoes just boiled old ones cut in half. Very poor, certainly won't be going there again

The Axe & Cleaver is not the smartest pub you've ever seen and is perhaps a little rough around the edges, but don't be put off as the staff are extremely welcoming and the food is very good indeed. recommended.

Where do I start. The service we received on entering this pub, was so professional. There was such a friendly and warm welcome as soon as we arrived. We were able to take our dog inside, which is such a bonus. The meal was cooked all fresh, nice chunky chips and fresh cobs. On the children's menu it was possible to order fries instead of chips, which my grandson loved with his nuggets, Tea and coffee came piping hot. We will definitely be visiting again on our next break. Thankyou

I really enjoying going to The Axe & Cleaver, I pop in now and again but the staff treat you like an old friend/regular, so friendly and always smiling. I LOVE the Axe & Cleaver Burger, it's the best pub burger I've ever had. They are family friendly as well as well which is great when you just want to pop in with the kids.

We moved to Mumby, just down the road, in February 2016. We tried a few other pubs in the area (which were ok) before we found the Axe. We have now been using the Axe for meals out for 7-8 months, at least once/twice a week since, including nearly every Sunday. This is a typical friendly village pub that serves good, wholesome food. The owners (Bob and Julie) and their son (Lewis) are so friendly as are the locals that we have got to know over a short time. The kitchen staff we have got to know are also so friendly. Without a doubt if you have a meal at the Axe you will not go hungry! They have loads of entertainment in the evenings but as we are elderly (shut up Lewis!) we have not yet ventured out after dark but intend to sometime when we stay awake! The pub is dog friendly and it's nice for us to see friendly dogs when we go in there especially people on holiday from the numerous sites around the area. In short, a typical friendly, dog friendly, village pub serving good ale (try the Horncastle brewery guest ales) and decent food at a decent price. Don't expect lightening ping, ping food and you will not be disappointed.

In between viewing properties in the village so checked out the local hostelry for lunch. Not very ambient, however the barmaid was pleasant and helpful. Ordered chilli con carne, chips and rice and my wife had the ploughman's. The chilli was good, meaty, plenty of onions but most of all tasty and the rice was well cooked, chips not so good. The ploughman's had three cheeses, fresh bread, salad, pickles etc and was very good. Definitely worth a visit if you're passing.

We went on short notice and the staff managed to get us seated after they took our order we waited a short while and our food arrived BOOM my burger was the biggest I have had 2 burgers bacon mushrooms cheese onions really great tasting burgers home made chips and a nice salad. I really tried to eat it all but failed sadly. My wife had the lamb shank with potatoes and veg again a nice sized portion the shank was excellent with a very tasty gravy. We really wanted to try the desserts but no room left for them. After we finished our meal the owner and his son took time to talk to us which was a nice touch. Will we return YOU BET WE WILL

Staying in Aby village for a week's holiday and had to try the local pub. Exterior looks a bit "tired" but don't be put off - inside it's friendly. cosy and lots of character. Excellent choices of dishes on the menu and "daily specials" board - we especially appreciated the choice of gluten-free options and Dawn was happy to go through each option in detail. Good portions and served hot! Very tasty and wholesome. Wide range of dessert options too and it was evident from conversations with other diners, that Dawn would also be happy to adapt these just to suit individual requirements. Obviously very deserving of the many awards over many years.
