Avanti Capitola in South Lakeland

Tiny spot in a mega location in Ulverston. Kendal and Ulverston are kind of equidistance for me for a night out, Ulverston is nicer. AC is a good stop on the way through town. Beer is kept well and the owner lady is bolshy and funny. She maintains the standards! One of my faves.

Saturday 24th February 2024 This great real ale wine bar is a diverse pub, and that is good . Everybody is made welcome. The bar staff superb the 2 hand pumped ales on were local and also the atmosphere is good well worth a visit when in Ulverstone

Booking not honoured. After booking for 7 people we turned up only to find a table was NOT reserved despite it being in the book but hadn’t been checked by the staff. Got a sorry and a shrug and had to leave in the pouring rain. Very bad customer service. Get your act together…..

Booked a table for 7 for a birthday but nothing was reserved for us. Apparently it was in their ‘book’ but they hadn’t checked it! Just a shrug of their shoulders and “sorry but there’s nothing we can do” and we headed off in the pouring rain trying to find a bit of space, on a night when every other place was rammed with people! Not impressed!!

Visited Capitola while working in the area. Small but a very friendly place, the Lancaster beer is excellent and there's a good range of other beers and lagers. Shout out to Molly and Kitty(?) The friendliest and best bar staff in town. Highly recommend.

Visited this place whilst on holiday. Good selection of drinks, two young, polite and friendly ladies behind the bar. Good atmosphere and the night we were there we had live music on which just added to a good atmosphere.

We found Avanti Capitola a buzzing bar, lots of people visiting sitting both inside and outside. Great selection of wines and beers coupled with fantastic hosts.

Served a perfect pint of Peroni by the nice lady behind the bar (the owner I think). Comfy and tiny little bar with an excellent range of beers and ciders. Very welcoming.

What a lovely friendly bar, that serves amazing cocktails and has a great selection of delicious wines. The owner Wendy is really welcoming and gives great tips about the local sights and amenities, and Reg the bar man is very accommodating and also really friendly. Exceptional service and would thoroughly recommend. Thank you Avanti Capitola.

Very rude owner who was racist towards me

Booked a table for 2 and knowing they don't normally serve food was pleasantly surprised by the good choice on offer. The Game pie and the Trout we ordered both tasted great and am now looking forward to going again to try the sharing platters which look amazing.

Visited Avanti first evening after end of lockdown. Absolutely superb food. We had the sharing seafood lovers platter starter for two. More than enough for a main course for two. Delicious fresh and smoked salmon, mackeral, juicy prawns and seafood pate. Dressed with olives, grapes and salad srrved with ciabatta. Brilliant value for money and a great couple of hours enjoying it and some great real ale.

Disappointing drop atmosphere and customer service. Appeals for customer loyalty having the opposite effect.

Would not recommend here, considering we are on a couples weekend break we thought a nice drink in a wine bar would be lovely. First we got ID then the owner gave us werid looks, I have never felt so uncomfortable in my whole life. The bar staff are lovely I just feel sorry for them as there manager was very rude and not welcoming what so ever.

Would not recommend, As we entered we was greeted by lovely staff but as we sat down the owner or manager was pointing saying ‘they need id’ and they ‘need to move table apart’ fine we do look young but no need to be so rude. For the whole time we was there we was getting dirty looks and thought very uncomfortable.

Popped in today for a quick brew and we were greeted with delicious complimentary scones - home made and covered in jam. The ladies who were working we’re very chatty and friendly, we very much felt like we were part of the regular visitors. Would definitely visit again!

Come in to the little bar regularly due to to amazing service we always receive. The staff are always friendly and chatty which is lovely as most places this isn’t so. The platters Wendy puts in are amazing too if ever you want a smaller group or a bigger party feed. Never be disappointed by what’s in offer. Drinks selection is huge for such a small place, the beers are always spot on and the cocktail are definitely best in town. Also with the restrictions in place just now it feels safe in the wine bar as every rule is being followed strictly, if there’s no seating then they’re full, which is how it should be, everything is cleaned immediately (which has always been the case before this), which is not the same in many other places I’ve seen lately. The staff could not do anymore to welcome everyone into their lovely little bar. We went last week as two couples, excellent measures in place for distancing and we all enjoyed a variety of well made cocktails! A must visit in ulverston!

We visited here since lockdown and yet again had a fabulous relaxed evening , staff are lovely friendly and very attentive (as usual ) . The food is excellent as are the drinks nothing was too much trouble..... will I be back ? Try and stop me !!!

I absolutely love the cocktails, best part of any night out in Ulverston for me is a Frozen cocktail here!! Excellent customer service and measures for social distancing were great!

Wendy is known localy for her attitude towards decent men that go in there she bans any one like she's drunk on power and obviously has a thing for the young girls who are bar staff and look like they are totally afraid of her x

The service is slow but I know its because they are making the drinks to requirements, also expensive for the same reasons, but live entertainment was amazing and had a great time in there

Habíamos estado en el Molino por unas horas y realmente no sabíamos cómo hacerlo. La señora en este bar de cócteles era muy servicial, absolutamente encantadora. Ella nos dio muchas ideas sobre dónde ir. El bar es pequeñito y está lleno con alrededor de 30 personas, pero la selección de bebidas es excelente y todos tuvimos excelentes cócteles.

Been a few times and enjoyed the beer. Better to go during the week as it can get very busy very quickly, as it is only a small building.

Landlady lovely even though she has a bad arm

Great location lovely atmosphere great staff. Gin and tonic £3.50 really good gins for a great price. Try the Wild June gin it is amazing a little bit more expensive but we'll worth it.

We stopped by to watch the rugby hoping for a less rowdy atmosphere that you might find in some pubs. We started with coffee and cake which was delicious and finished with more traditional match day drinks. The atmosphere was good and although there were only a few tables from where you could watch the match so get there early if that's what you are looking for.

We had a couple of drinks after a nice meal across the road. The lady who served us was so friendly and cheerful. We all enjoyed our drinks so much.

Fantastic music for a Wednesday night! You certainly won't get this quality of entertainment anywhere else at this time of the week!

Prompt and very friendly service from all the staff. Atmosphere was warm and welcoming. There was nothing to dislike. It felt as if you could be in an Italian bar (but for our English weather...!) Staff were interested and attentive, but not intrusive.

Just popped in here had fab hot choc/ brandy mix Staff really friendly and helpful ( even down to the fact I spilt my mrs drink - was given a fresh one no charge!) Great ambience and a must visit

Small bar serving high quality and well kept beers and drinks. We had a couple here before going for a meal close by during Ulverston's Dickensian Festival and it was excellent. Very pleasant and charismatic owner who we enjoyed chatting with.

As a business traveller I do like to sniff out something a bit off the beaten track and this place fits the bill. Ulverston offers soooooo many pubs to drink in but they do get a bit samey!!! Love a local beer but nice to have it in trendy setting. Been here a few times now and always felt welcome by both the staff, owner and the locals. If you are prepared to have a chat and crack you will be welcomed back again and again. Never met Wendy?? the owner before but she was happy to recommend the local beers and the extensive wine list. All in all a very good experience, just a shame they don't do more food. Will continue to visit when I get the chance

Had a couple of drinks in here, Staff friendly, prices reasonable, facilities good you can watch the world go by from the window seats

Occasionally get to escape the city and visit Ulverston as my girlfriend's family live there - we sometimes go to Capitola Bar. Went in on Saturday in search of the incredible mulled wine and mulled cider we had last Christmas. We were greeted cheerfully and promptly by the staff. Despite not having been in for a while, the proprietor remembered us - we were made to feel very welcome. She said the mulled wine wasn't available yet but would be ready for the Dickensian weekend! I know where I'll be heading first that weekend!

Was out with work colleagues who insisted on visiting this wine bar.

Just had a lovely bottle of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc called Kuraka and it was lush! Then talking to the lovely man on the next table and he's having a pint of Aspall and he said it was the best pint ever - and in Ulverston you can only get it here! Such a great evening xx

This bar is in dire need of some atmosphere. Except for a Saturday night, it is unlikely that you will find other customers in this bar. The drinks are expensive and if you show any sign of enjoying yourself, you will be asked to leave.

Nice pleasant bar with friendly bar staff. Great selection of wines and beers. A fab place to sit and watch the world go by.

Visited this bar with friends on bank holiday Sunday.its a small but quite nice looking bar with a variety of foreign beers.The staff itself though really need to change their attitude they lack any sort of politeness and look like they fear their manageress.We had a problem with flat beer because they had lost the gas on the pumps,when we asked for the beer to be recharged the manageress was incredibly rude and at £3.80 a pint it's the least they could have done.Decent bar but staff have got to get better.

This is the only bar in town with the rest being pubs, it's run really well by who ever owns it. Great place for a quiet mid week drink in a well made out setting. Great selection of drinks and the wine is the best you will get any where in town.

I visited this establishment today with my mum and sister, fancying an afternoon cocktail berfore our lunch reservation at The Farmers. For a Saturday afternoon it was almost empty, with only two other ladies inside.After we chose our drinks I aproached the bar to order and was asked to show my ID. Looking younger than my 26 years I'm not offended about being asked , and promptly produced it, but the barmaid proceeded to take my drivers license and write something in a book before handing it back to me! This seemed odd, and when she asked my sister for her ID my sister questioned what details she was documenting? The barmaid advised she was writing down the d.o.b. down so she would remember the dates for our next drinks (with only two other people who were clearly of age in the bar not sure this was necessary at all)!We were quietly enjoying our drinks in a booth some way from the bar when an unkempt woman entered. I assume she was the proprietor as she then went behind the bar, looked over at our table and asked the barmaid what we were drinking! When the barmaid replied cocktail this lady could then be heard saying 'well I hope you asked them for ID as they don't look 18?' She proceeded to stare over at our group for the remaining 10 minutes of our stay, making us feel uncomfortable and ensuring that we left without ordering a further drink!Having worked behind a bar during my time at university I understand the importance of ensuring all customers are of age, but having proved our age and accompanied by our mum we shouldn't have so rudely been made to feel like we were doing something wrong. Perhaps in future if you want to talk about your customers in their presence a little discretion would be advisable. This was our first drink of the day, and our last at Avanti Capitola.

Have been here lots before but in December was part of a family occasion that was catered for by the owner. Lovely atmosphere and very tasty food. Would highly recommend this venue. Owner is very friendly and can cater for whatever you need - equally also a fab place to have a girly catch up over cocktails - I'll be visiting again and again ️xx

We are a group of 7 ladies and had a wonderful evening with canapés, cheese and meat platter.Not just little slices of cheese...chunks....loads of different meat...bread.....dips....fruit...olives...the list goes on...well worth the money...we couldn't even finish it allCocktails great...so refreshing...try the Mojito.....overall exp....brilliant...defo go again

i booked this wine bar after seeing reviews on here that food was available, it was my work colleague's leaving do, we were hoping for something a bit more upmarket and that is exactly what we got, the food platters were presented beautifully and had so much choice, there were 12 of us in total , with 2 vegetarians, there was plenty for everyone, the staff couldn't do enough and were very professional and friendly, the bar was busy, but they still took the time to make sure all our needs were met, we would definitely use this venue again, as it was a friendly bar with plenty of atmosphere and dedicated staff

My wife and I had an excellent meat and cheese platter to share recently. Not much by the way of advertising that they do these and apparently they also do a seafood platter as well. The food was excellent and despite both of us being big eaters and hungry, we failed to clear the board. They keep asking if you want more bread and the service was as good as the food. Washed down with a couple of excellent bottles of wine. The price was very reasonable too. At the moment, you need to book and order your food. Highly recommended and a nice change from the more established eating places in Ulverston

A great night was had by all at my husband's birthday do. The food was superb. Platters of meats, cheeses, potato salad, breads, olives, prawns, etc, were readily eaten by all of our guests. Nothing was too much trouble. An extensive collection of wines and champagnes at reasonable prices added to the enjoyment! The ambience, warmth and welcome are second to none in this little gem of a wine bar. A big thanks to Wendy and her lovely staff for a brilliant night. VISIT SOON, YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED.

Had a great time with family and friends celebrating our daughter's 21st birthday. The champagne was lovely and service was great- it certainly was a wonderful start to the evening.

What a gem of find. This 'little' wine bar serves amazing wines and champagnes by the bottle or glass and a very comprehensive cocktail list. The atmosphere is chic yet relaxed and unpretentious. Whether celebrating a birthday, catching up with friends or watching rugby/tennis or horse racing, Wendy the owner caters for everyone, and her platters are simply amazing. Fish, salmon, prawns, cold meats and cheeses (vegetarians catered for) and very affordably priced. The bar and toilets are spotlessly clean and the staff attentive. Well worth visiting.

Always welcomed and sure of good company . Managers have a hands on friendly approach and they remember you from last visit. You can aways rely on them to keep out pub crawling oafs. Staff are prompt and attentive. We are off there now to watch Six Nations Rugby with staff serving fabulous locally sourced food and all proceeds going to Ulverston Hospice. Congratulations , a gem of a blend of fun and relaxed company.

Not really a restaurant, more a pub that looks a bit like a wine bar. Totally tiny inside, probably can fit 40 people max. Our group of 6 arrived after being fed at the Farmers and had a brilliant craic with the landlady. Stayed for about 90 minutes before moving on. Top times.

Wendy provided the buffet for our celebration - it was absolutely delicious. A wide range of food was provided-salmon, honey, ham,quiches,cous cous , pasta salads, potato salads (so tasty) and coleslaw.Puddings were to die for!The enormous Pavlova vanished very quickly, wonderful home made apple pies and excellent sticky toffee. Alongside this was an amazing selection of local cheeses and super artisan breads.Everyone commented on how good the food was and I would recommend Wendy to cater for any occasion.

Wendy, of Avanti Capitola, produced the most amazing buffet for a family party last weekend. The range of food - from poached salmon with cucumber, to really tasty couscous, salads, etc,, wonderful array of different breads and great cheese board, followed by a huge pavlova made with her own home-grown raspberries, a delicious and large slab of sticky toffee pudding with lashing of additional toffee sauce, and two wonderful apple pies..... and so it goes on! Wendy produced a similarly superb buffet for us four years ago, and because it was so outstanding another family member specifically asked her to do this one. There was plenty for everyone - in fact so much that we have all been dining on it during the week! We would highly recommend the range and quality of food which Wendy provides for large parties - it really is very special.

Wines are very good and some lovely nibbles. Very friendly staff and lovely decor, I would definitely recommend it, particularly for couples and small groups.

Twice now we've booked a lunchtime at Avanti Capitola for the Ulverston Dickensian Festival.The platter for four of us was extremely modestly priced and absolutely excellent. Service considering the volume of people involved in the annual festival was extremely good. Very accommodating. Next year we'll book again. And hope to visit before next year's event. Full marks.

We had the best time. Wendy pulled out all the stops for our friends birthday, with all the trimmings. Just a perfect evening with music that couldn't have been better tailored for the evening. Lively but safe and civilised. Thanks to all the staff

I loved this place. I've been a few times when visiting the area and the staff were lovely. Their tapas was perfect.
