This once vibrant pub was dead on a sunny Saturday afternoon. After going in and buying drinks I now know why. £18.50 for 2 pints and 2 halfs. It was £6.30 for a pint of San Miguel! We sat outside looking at the dead plants in the window boxes…it’s grotty. This is such a shame. We have visited many times over the last 20 years and it was always a good pint with a good atmosphere. Give this pub a miss. There’s cheaper and cleaner alternatives.

What has happened to this pub, it's filthy inside and out. Food was only served once in the week we were there..The pub was often closed . The owners seemed to be always out on the drink in the other village pubs rather than open there own pub . The woman spent more time playing with her dog . Avoid is all I can say !

This was some of the worst food we have ever eaten (actually we didn't eat it). We had the displeasure of waiting 2.5 hours for our food. Which, although this was 1.5 hours over the wait time we were advised, we have had food that can only be described as not fit for consumption (including my dog). I'll attach pictures of a burger we had, in which the bacon hadn't touched the pan and the burger resembled an rubber erasure from school. The gravy I had with my steak pie, could have been held over my head like a meringue mixture. On top of that, one of us got our meal 25 mins before the rest of us (5 ppl in total). We heard the chef in the toilet saying "I can't wait to finish, I can't be bothered". Honestly,I don't usually write reviews but this is one of the only reasons social media is beneficial, to advise others on what to expect. Not good at all, we advised staff and nothing was offered in way of apology. Poor at best.

We called in to the Kings Arms for a quick drink and the customer service was nothing short of rude and appalling. The 2 mature ladies serving on need to take a look at themselves and consider how they welcome people into the pub. I heard several people in the pub muttering how miserable the staff were. I felt that I inconvenienced the staff by asking for a drink. I certainly won’t be visiting here again - the faces on the staff was enough to turn the beer sour!!

Fantastic, exactly what a village pub should be. After a beautiful day out on the fells, the hearty food really hit the spot. I booked ahead for the first night of our holiday and so glad I did. This place was buzzing and we enjoyed ourselves so much we booked again for a couple of nights later again …. enjoying our good decision-making with great pub grub and chatting with fellow holiday makers and the owner Ed. On several nights we returned for drinks. Bookings are required for food, as seems to be the case everywhere now so do book ahead! There’s no doubt businesses are struggling to get staff but whatever Ed is doing, he’s doing it right. A village pub where you can pop in for good pub grub or a few drinks is invaluable. 10/10

Firstly some of the reviews for this place are quite frankly amazing. Gourmet prices, bad service, shabby. Honestly, take a step back from yourselves and think about where you are. The pub was very welcoming, squeezed us in at short notice. A good beer and wine selection, pub menu has good choices, it was well cooked, nice and very reasonably priced. Did we expect Michelin star quality food, no, because we went to a pub in the middle of the Lake District for pub food. Was it overpriced. Absolutely not. If you want something cheaper than this, then I suggest table table or some other chain is a place for you. Personally I would expect to pay more in a tourist location but also more importantly after the last 18 months we have had as a country. This sector is one of many that has suffered hugely, so again I wouldn’t be surprised if prices went up. Which I again reiterate, it’s really not overpriced. Going back again tonight and can’t wait. If you want a typical local pub, get down to this one and ignore the pathetic reviews. Also take your dog as they are very welcome, probably more so, than some guests!!

We choose this restaurant as at the time it was no 3 on the trip advisor ratings for Hawkshead. Sadly this is completely inaccurate as our experience was surreal and just not good enough i'm afraid. We felt unappreciated and to be honest unwelcome. Our table wasn't ready, as others seemed to be experiencing, and put in a side room with other bemused diners whilst we think our table was cleared? No obvious COVID measures at all! Our waiter clearly has not been on any hospitality training and made no effort to talk or communicate with us. No menu's were provided so we assumed the meals available were on the blackboard above the fire. Food was OK but from a limited menu. No "is everything ok?" from the waiter or other staff. Again no menu offered to choose a desert from other than a "from memory" list from said waiter who didn't think to wait to ask what we wanted when some of the party were not at the table. In fact we were so much in shock at the poor service that we declined to have a desert and promptly left. Thank goodness for the East Out scheme!!! Otherwise it was expensive for basic food offering. Wont be going back!

Yes it was the eat out to help scheme and they did fit us in but no excuse for the frosty reception from staff and quality of the meals. Drinks were put on the table by putting hands over the top of the glass, and then four meals normally priced at £14-£14.50 came out which for the price were incredibly poor.First thought at the portion size were that they were half size as well as half price. Spoke to the waitress about the few chips on the plate (see picture) and was told it was the normal sized portion. To be fair she did then bring out more chips in a bowl which had a hair in it.(Second Picture)The chips themselves were supermarket value chips at best .Then waited 15 minutes for the bill to cap it off. Had been the previous night to another place 20 yards away and the food was cheaper , service and food was excellent. Sorry can’t recommend it, overpriced , poor quality and unwelcoming.

Attractive traditional pub in Hawksheads village square. Indoor and outdoor seating available. Typical hearty pub fare. Unfortunately when we visited around 7.30pm on a Sunday evening about half the menu options were unavailable. We opted for the chilli garlic prawn starter which was disappointing: basically a few small prawns in bottled chilli sauce on a piece of baguette. The main course of an individual shepherd's pie with black pudding pieces in the mash, served with red cabbage was better, although tasted bit greasy maybe because of the addition of the black pudding.Service was very friendly but inattentive. The kitchen forgot our main course and after waiting for 45 mins after our starter I had to chase it up because no one had been over to check on us. In all fairness they did give us a complimentary glass of wine each as an apology.Compared to other places we ate at in the Lake District this one was one of the most reasonably priced.

We ate here for lunch. I’m gluten free so was delighted to see a wide range of gluten free options including sandwiches. I chose the beef sandwich. The bread was nice a fresh and the beef was a lovely cut. Nice size portions and good price.

Lovely food (not over-priced for the area), super real ale (it's in the Good Beer Guide), very attractive historic building, friendly and personable staff. Couldn't ask for anything more!

We had friends from the States staying so we were looking for a late bite to eat on a Saturday. It was about 2.30. As we walked in to sit down a woman snapped ‘the kitchens closed’ I explained we just wanted a sandwich but she dismissed us with a curt response repeating the same message. We might have settled for a drink and packet of crisps but her manner was so unwelcoming we left. It looked such a nice place too...

Just got back from a two night break in one of the cottages. Beautiful. All the staff were so friendly, we ate in the resturant on our first night and it was delicious. The breakfasts on both mornings were very good, vegans are well catered for.

We sat outside in the sunshine and enjoyed the sharing platter which was huge and delicious! Worth a visit if you are in Hawkshead.

The vegan burger was above average and the choice of beers great. A lovely cosy pub to sink into after a long walk

Lovely bright and modern pub. Nice choice of really taste beer. Called in mid week, so it was quite and lacked atmosphere, which is why I give 4 stars.

Always a perfect spot to stop after a long walk to get well earned pint and amazing food. The team are knowledgeable and the selection of food and drinks allows for a good variety for all who stop by.

Very tired and in need of complete renovation and it shouldnt have been advertised as a four star hotel. Staff were friendly and helpful working under poor conditions. Breakfast choice poor unless you like eggs and the vegetarian full English was dry and obviously been kept under a heat lamp. Definitely not 4 star and I understand the day after we left the hotel was closed for renovation.

We had a room at the back and it was horrible. There's no getting around it. Small, dark and smelling very strongly of damp. The twin beds were touching. The carpet was very stained. Everything was tired and dated. The bathroom floor so cold it was unpleasant to go in there. Maybe if you get a sea view room it's nice - they looked ok from the outside, but if you are on more of a budget (we still paid £90 per night for the room) I would recommend looking elsewhere. Staff were friendly and breakfast was good but not with £15 a head and that was after a discount.

This was our second visit. We had previously enjoyed our stay and so booked for a special family event. Positives first- Our rooms were fabulous and clean. The doggy shower room a great idea. Staff on arrival lovely, cleaning staff and maintenance staff polite and friendly. Although the furniture in the lounge area was a little tired, there genuinely seemed to be an effort to maintain and improve the hotel and grounds. Negatives- one or two waiting staff had a bit of a toxic attitude. We’ve eaten in top Michelin and other good restaurants around the globe and would not expect this. So much so we chose to eat out at other local restaurants after our first night. We were a party of mixed dietary requirements and found the Vegetarian/vegan choices were very limited especially if staying for a week. My meal was ok but spoiled by atmosphere created by waiter attitude. Not truely vegetarian/vegan. I opted for pancakes one breakfast with compote, no bacon. They were cooked in bacon fat. Waitress, instead of immediately trying to sort it out, lied to my face. Doggy friendly on the face of it. Only allowed in certain rooms, not in main restaurant. Fair enough but Bar restaurant/lounge area not serving meals or seats unavailable because main restaurant users waiting on their restaurant table becoming available (people appeared to be waiting quite a time). Felt a bit Faulty Towers. Would we choose to spend our money there in future?
