We had a room at the back and it was horrible. There's no getting around it. Small, dark and smelling very strongly of damp. The twin beds were touching. The carpet was very stained. Everything was tired and dated. The bathroom floor so cold it was unpleasant to go in there. Maybe if you get a sea view room it's nice - they looked ok from the outside, but if you are on more of a budget (we still paid £90 per night for the room) I would recommend looking elsewhere. Staff were friendly and breakfast was good but not with £15 a head and that was after a discount.

I love visiting the Bay Horse, it's a lovely treat. The building has an interesting history that is well documented on the walls. In winter there's a welcoming, inviting open fire that's cosy and warm. The view from the restaurant in the conservatory across the estuary are beautiful. In summer it's nice to sit outside watching the sun set and watching the stars, very romantic. A great choice of beers and ales. The food menus have a great choice of food at a good price and portions are generous, food is presented professionally. All times I have visited the staff are friendly, helpful and attentive. I recommend the Bay Horse Hotel to all my family and friends and colleagues as its a lovely place. The views are lovely and the walk along the canal and the beaches is very enjoyable.

When we arrived we had no idea what to expect. We went on the recommendation of a friend. The restaurant itself is lovely and has a very welcoming atmosphere. We were seated in the conservatory with a lovely view. The table was presented beautifully with fresh linen and butter piped into the shape of little swans. There was a bottle of tap water already on the table. It had been a very warm day and the tap water was most welcome. We ordered our food and were offered the largest complimentary bread rolls I've very seen. My partner took one which he said was delicious and I declined. After a couple of glasses of water I realised that there was mould in the bottom of my water bottle. I very discretely said 'excuse me' to the mangeress and showed her the bottle, I made sure that no other customers heard. I worked in restaurant myself for many years and do understand how embarrassing it can be when a customer makes a fuss. I would not be mentioning it on here if I wasn't very disappointed in how it was dealt with. The manageress took the bottle from my hand and said 'oh, I'll get you another'. The waitress then appeared with another bottle which she accidently put on another table without saying a word, so still no apology even if it would have been said to the wrong person. The manageress then went and retrieved the water bottle and put it on the end of my table saying'there you go'. Still no apology. Our food came. I ordered the fillet steak, medium/rare which was cooked perfectly and my partner ordered a vegetarian dish. Both were absolutely delicious. We throughly enjoyed our food and went for a lovely stroll by the canal before returning home. The incident with the water bottle was not a deal breaker but an apology and an assurance that they would be thoroughly checked before being placed on the table in future should have been given. However, the food was beautiful and i would return there in the future.

Recent visit for 2 night stay in the Lapwing Room. Staff very friendly. Food delicious. Room was dreadful. Not dirty but musky damp smell. We complained on several occasions and was told we have sprayed the room with air freshener. We couldn’t move room as it was fully booked. We couldn’t leave because we were sharing car with friends. We stayed out of the room as much as we could and ended up sleeping in a chair in the conservatory. We refused to pay for the room and was told if we didn’t police would be called. Manager then admitted there was a drain blocked but said it wasn’t bad. Yet our friends admitted we couldn’t sleep in that room with that smell. So avoid the Lapwing Room if staying. Manager was very offhand we won’t be revisiting here!

A little gem of a place. Very old building with lots of history, some of which is displayed on the walls. Visited as a couple at lunchtime. The conservatory was full so we sat in the bar area. The sirloin steak from the grill is quite powerful, was exactly as ordered to the second, the chips were very good, the fish dishes were also recommended and the dessert 😋. Almost forgot the homemade bread (from muffin tins), also great. All in all, a very clear recommendation to definitely eat there.

Stayed two nights over the 'Dave Day' weekend. Arrived on motorbikes and were able to park/chain these down the side, right in front of our room and balcony. The room is a bit dated but the balcony and views more then make up for it. Room was clean and adequate. No biscuits on the tea tray, unfortunately :-(. The food is expensive but also very good. One of my favourite restaurants in the Lake District. Old world charm in the delightful cosy pub with lovely open fire. However we chose to eat in the beautiful conservatory with amazing views across the estuary and hills. The food is wonderful here. Delicious sandwiches and snacks as well as a full menu. This is a very popular restaurant so at weekends it is essential to book a table. We loved the large portions of prawn cocktail and delicious baked mushroom. The beef casserole was rich and tasty, the poached cod was excellent and my lamb shank was delicious. Cooked to perfection and being locally produced had the most amazing flavour. Certainly the best lamb shank I have eaten. A very memorable lunch. All the staff are so friendly, helpful and professional.

The chips were very definitely home made and cooked to perfection, and to say large wouldnt do them justice. The only quibble was with my sandwich. Otherwise, lamb shank in red wine sauce, cod with spinach and poached egg all came with a choice of chips (lovely) or mash and stir fried vegetables or salad. Main courses about £15.75, steak more. Those who had room for puddings really enjoyed them.

Once again I spent my birthday at the Bay Horse. We’ve done this for the past several years and love it. The welcome and food is outstanding. I had the lemon sole stuffed with smoked salmon and avocado (it was delicious) and my other half had fillet of Aberdeen Angus steak in a brandy and peppercorn sauce (his favourite and his usual choice!).

I love this place so much the service the people and the owners are top class, it does not take many visits to be a local. The food is stunning homemade bread and soups are beautifully served up.

Went here the frist time around 30 years ago only to return now on holiday. You would never believe driving through the industrial estate that such a place exisits. Friendly staff and a varied menu, the Bay Horse has had a good reputation for many a year. Luchtime selection is varied and the mains all come in a decent size. Prices are okay but not exactly the cheapest. I believe that the owner is looking to move on and perhaps this shows in the need for a refurbishment. Views over the bay are fantastic.

There is more to Ulverston than what you first see, this lovely hotel/pub is just a 15 minute walk from Ulverston town centre, along the canal.Came for lunch, and was warmly welcomed on arrival by Joe,who was very friendly and made lunch a real treat.Would highly recommend this pub for lunch, and the views from the hotel rooms, especially on a sunny day must be amazing.Great choice of food and drink available,a very good vegetarian menus also on offer.Service one of the best experience in the lakes, and staff couldn't have been more helpful.Location is second to none on a sunny day,and I'm sure in colder months the fireplace would be a welcome sight, look forward to visiting again soon keep up the good work

Canal foot is an historic place. The food from the Bay Horse can be eaten on the seating at canal foot and is an ideal location to take my groups on bike tours of the Furness peninsular.Lake District bikes not only offers guided bike tours but also rents a range of bikes for all types of cyclists.

My friend and I just had sandwiches and salad. The salad had a small tomato on it which had been freshly cut but the rest of the salad was limp and brown round the edges. Definitely not fresh. When we pointed this out to our server she just said “Thank you” and took our plates away. No apology, no replacement.

We were visiting family and went for a long walk along the canal and came across the Bay Horse. What a great place, very oldie worldy, with fabulous sea views. Very busy, with most tables taken. We didn’t eat here this time and just had a drink, but all the meals being served looked amazing and we will most definitely eat here next time we’re in the area.

Called in with my mum and 4 year old son, a very welcoming reception. Swapped the mash for chips no problem for my son and he brought lego with and the staff when he occasionally dropped a piece were great at getting it for him rather than us getting out of our chairs. My mum and I had jacket patato which were very tasty. And finished with dessert for my son three scoops of ice cream. A great service thank you

Goosander, eider, shelduck, curlew all seen in the first few minutes from the front door; definitely my sort of restaurant. And then there was the food. We had succulent calves liver and very tasty venison before deciding that we were over-eating and changing to the "lite-bites" menu. Our favourite was the Bobotie but all the others were well-prepared and tasty. We did not try all the wines and beers but the merlot was good as was the local bitter.

Lovely bright and modern pub. Nice choice of really taste beer. Called in mid week, so it was quite and lacked atmosphere, which is why I give 4 stars.

Always a perfect spot to stop after a long walk to get well earned pint and amazing food. The team are knowledgeable and the selection of food and drinks allows for a good variety for all who stop by.

Very tired and in need of complete renovation and it shouldnt have been advertised as a four star hotel. Staff were friendly and helpful working under poor conditions. Breakfast choice poor unless you like eggs and the vegetarian full English was dry and obviously been kept under a heat lamp. Definitely not 4 star and I understand the day after we left the hotel was closed for renovation.
