Good food, friendly (well trained) staff. Great location to our hotel. Value for money. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this restaurant.

4th time here, food was lovely as always. Food was nice and hot on service, staff knowledgeable about dishes. Generous portions.

A really stunning restaurant, beautifully decorated and a brilliantly varied set menu at a very reasonable price! Ideal for a pre-theatre dinner.

Excellent. Terrific starters of curried parsnip soup and garlic mushrooms on the set menu. Then mains of beef rump and duck leg. Each superb. Wife ordered the beef burger; the steak was an accident (which they apologised a lot for) but as soon as she saw it, she changed her mind. Said it was the best she'd ever had... Great fruity sauvignon blanc as well.

8 o'clock were kind enough to let us book for a large family 80th birthday lunch, and despite it being a busy Saturday afternoon, our experience couldn't have been better. From the minute we arrived, every single member of staff was welcoming and attentative. Our table was beautifully set, all the food was delicious and nothing was too much trouble. We took in a cake which they lit and delivered to the table while joining in the singing and we also had a 3 year old with us who they were very lovely towards. Prior to the meal, we had pre drinks in their Social8 bar, and again, the staff were welcoming and helpful. The birthday boy had a fabulous time, thank you.

Really lovely place, the food was great! All the staff were lovely and Chantelle absolutely made the experience, was on it with everything and was very welcoming. Would definitely visit again if we are in the area.

Wow, wow, wow! My mother and I just happened to pop in for dinner whilst in York, and we had such a lovely meal. The restaurant is beautiful, the staff are friendly and the food is delicious. Could not fault any part, I would recommend this to anyone.

Very friendly and attentive staff listened and acted on our request to be seated somewhere quiet. Food was lovely but had to give 4 stars as my chicken was a bit too dry and overcooked but wouldn't stop me from returning in the future, very nice restaurant and hope to return 😊

My husband and I enjoyed the service, food and ambience. It was his birthday and we got a birthday slate as well for free. Aimee served as that evening and she was amazing. Food had good portions and tasted great. Will definitely go back for our anniversary.

Restaurant: Lovely food, quick service and friendly staff. 😋 The set menu was good value for money too! The pan roasted chicken was gorgeous, chicken burger and steak very nice too! Went to the bar for a drink after the meal but only 1 person to serve the whole bar and unfortunately wasn't well organised/very slow so we left 😕

18th wedding anniversary meal. The food was outstanding. Compliments to the chef.... perfect 👌... service was amazing. Massive thankyou to Harrison, he knew exactly what to do and when to do it. This makes a big difference to a great night. Thankyou for the complimentary prosecco and anniversary board. Only gripe was it was a little chilly near the door. Highly recommend for a wonderful meal out. Many thanks will definitely be returning when in york. A beautiful restaurant and gorgeous food.

We visited during Restaurant Week to try a place new to us. We were impressed with the quality of the food, the excellent service and the very pleasant, friendly atmosphere. The menu was appetising and we'll be back to sample more.

Has a separate gluten free menu with items clearly labelled as being on set menu. Good set up in this regard. I really enjoyed my meal, but found the servings somewhat inconsistent. 3 of us had the beef rump, and all were different sizes and cooked differently, meaning some of my party did not enjoy their meals as much. Good cocktails and starters/desserts were nice. Waiting staff very accommodating.

The food was fabulous, we had a steak each both medium rare. However, one of the steaks was only medium rare in the centre everywhere else was well done. When reading back the menu we realised that the steak came with coleslaw and we did not receive it, so we had to ask for it. The service was okay, we asked for water at the start and was completely forgotten about. We felt as though the waitress dismissed us, and was very cold when serving us, which made us feel unwelcome as if it was all rehearsed. It is a beautiful place though!

If it wasn't for the tactics used to fleece you out of a few quid, it was a lovely meal. We were offered water to start our meal, was expecting a jug/glass of iced water with no explanation to the contrary. Nope a bottle of £4 water arrived, to late to question it. Then at the point if payment, we were told that they had put a 10% service charge in automatically, but they could remove it if we preferred... This just puts you in an awkward and uncomfortable position. We usually tip our servers, but this just made you feel pressured and cheap should you asked for it's removal. Plus, avoid the cheesecake... This is not cheesecake, more a solid block of something. Other than this, the food was delicious.

Our experience here was pretty disappointing. We popped in for a quick meal before our train and ordered the roasted salmon, chicken burger, beef burger, and a couple of cocktails. The food wasn’t great—the beef burger tasted like a ready meal, and the salmon was a bit chewy. On the plus side, the sides were quite nice. The place has an elegant look, but small details, like the cheap napkins, took away from the vibe. The service was lacking too—no one brought tap water or checked on us after the mains were served. Overall, you’d probably have a better experience at some other family-run restaurant in York.

Absolutely fabulous, I’ve been really disappointed recently when going out for dinner, but my meal today was absolutely fantastic. The service, food and atmosphere was really good. I had the duck breast which was delicious and my partner had the pork. Would 100% go back when in York next.

Had a lovely birthday meal here, so glad we visited. The halloumi fries with the chilli dip were 10/10. They were very accomodating, the staff were kind and attentive, especially our waitress. Took care of us all night and gave me a birthday slate with cake and a candle, and a card from the staff at Ate o'clock. Highly recommend, will definitely be returning. Great location, and a fab little bar next door with the best pornstar martinis we've ever had. 10/10 thank you!

First time in York and commercial man suggest us this little gem . Couldn’t be a better choice first of all they are pet friendly , the service was on point although was the first service of our lovely Freya , she been kind professional and everything is been done with a huge smile 🙂 congrats to her and I hope no one will broke that smile 🙂 food delicious 🤤 I really suggest to visit them

Pure luck we found the place, but can't fault anything. Chilli Beef starter and Lamb Shank main with side of buttered cabbage and bacon were absolutely fantastic. Would definitely go back.

Great service went for our anniversary and they was so kind they brought out free Prosecco for us both and even a desert at the end saying happy anniversary which was so nice of them.

We had the pork belly and the lamb chops and the food was dry and it was definitely not the most flavorful either. We only ordered the two mains and it took an hour to come out. The staff was nice but pretty slow. Overall, the ambience was okay, but the food was not great, the portions were quite small for the price and service was slow.

'New' waitress needs more training and guidance bless her. Otherwise, the food was very nice.

This is a fabulous place for a celebratory meal. Friendly staff, a stunningly beautiful setting and the food was both beautifully presented and delicious. It was even overpriced. I mentioned when booking that it was my husband's birthday and, despite us all being too full for a pudding, they presented him with a birthday decorated plate containing a small chocolate brownie, a strawberry and a candle. He was delightfully surprised. Highly recommend this place.

The entrance is lovely but I think it sets out an expectation they don't live up to when you get in. The staff were friendly but made mistakes. We asked for our toddler's drink not to have ice in it. They brought one with lots of ice (for a 2 year old and put it in a thin long glass...) but this was changed when we asked again. We asked to have everything come out at the same time instead of spacing out starters separately from mains (anyone with a toddler will feel the pain of dragging out a meal in sections ..) which was acknowledged but then things came separately. I pointed this out to the girl who brought out the starters when she brought them and she said oh, ok and left. We assumed it was to get the rest of the items but we didn't see anyone again until the starters got cleared out. The tables were very crammed in. Really struggled to pick things up when our toddler dropped something. We were sat in the covered alleyway part of the restaurant. The toilets are upstairs, up a narrow twisted staircase and the toilet we went it was dirty. I'm not sure how often they get cleaned. I had the roast rump, it was delicious but the meat was cold when I got it. My husband has a chicken burger which was nice but average quality wise. Our little one had the kid's beef burger. Her vegetables were cooked nicely, she didn't really eat much if the burger. She said she didn't like it. Ate a decent amount of my rump though. All in all, beautiful entrance but we wouldn't go back again

It was such a wonderful entrance to eat the tastiest meal we've had in a long time! It was amazing so we've booked to return again. The restaurant is lovely, really relaxing and beautifully decorated. The servers were attentive, and as I had to exchange my drink, they were very helpful. We can more than highly recommend this restaurant. We did see a couple of older ladies leave as they didn't like the look of the table they were to be seated at......BIG MISTAKE! The food is the BEST!!

Great place to meet friends for lunch

Food is good. The place is cosy and warm. Just that we feel like the restaurant is rushing people through their meal. We have reserved the table at 17:30 and some of us arrived 10 mins earlier. One of our friend was late but we were pushed to order asap at 17:38 as the staff said there are bookings after our table. It feels like we are sitting there and not following the ordering schedule of the restaurant. At the end, we leave at 19:00, half an hour earlier than the expected dining time (Our booking had 2 hour dinning time). We are disappointed at the service but the food is good.

This place ticks all the boxes and we celebrated our wedding anniversary and birthday with a lovely meal here. The team really took care of us with some nice touches throughout the meal to help make our evening even more special.

Your first meal when you’re visiting a town for the first time kind of marks the vibes of your visit. This place was a casual find but it was a great start for my visit. I got attracted by the fact that the place was packed and it was definitely a good choice. The food was delicious and the local beer was a great compliment. Totally recommended.

Place looked pretty from outside, service ok, food just ok, sirloin steak chewy, chips greasy.. the toilets were really dirty. Disappointing

Food was lovely, but lots to let it down. A vegetarian was served a chicken dish, order requests were ignored, drinks took way too long, sauces were missed. To end the meal as we left, some of the party almost slipped over on staff-spilt food, DANGEROUS. Would return if the service/experience was made much better.

I’ve eaten here several times now over the past few years and have never been disappointed. The restaurant is a little inconspicuous from the street but the interior is really attractive and there are lots of little rooms to provide intimate dining if needed. Our last visit was for a celebratory meal as a family and everyone was happy with their meal (the children’s chicken nuggets being the only slight disappointment). The welcoming staff and waitress were friendly, helpful and professional. The restaurant looks clean and well organised. The toilets were spotless. I would recommend Ate O’Clock without hesitation. Thank you for another pleasant evening in York!

One of the best places I've had the pleasure to visit

Food was good and cocktails were amazing but let down by dogs being a little boisterous (I should have realised dogs were welcome but the ones next to us were v annoying). Small issues like Mc Donald's napkins and a butter knife to cut the duck 😞. Would make a good lunch venue but not a great evening restaurant.

We just visited the restaurant this month and had a three course meal. Overall, I can say that the food we ate were all really delicious while listening to good vibes music and enjoying the lovely theme of the restaurant. Plus, One of the servers, sang with us a Happy Birthday for me. 😊❤️

Review of my original 5* Review. I'm a regular tourist to york, and choose this place all the time for lunch or dinner. This latest experience was awfull. The food was bland tasteless and parts tasted like they should not have tasted. The fusion of types of food should no have been. This is not a top end restaurant. It is not London. It is a mid end mediocre restaurant with unfortunately high prices for OK food and that is it. The latest visit was awful tasting prawns (shell on) that others complained about, and over cooked overpriced pork belly. Mine was a stone bass with a white wine sauce which had less wine in than water, slightly over cooked fish and tasteless muscles. The peas would have been nice if the sauce was in the next postcode. The service staff are always nice, but they will be with an average of £8 - £10 auto tip added (10%) so unfortunately, I will no longer be recommending nor going there again. I have better restaurants i use on a regular basis with better food.

Been here about 8 times previously so was disappointed that today was not a good day. Like to come here for their steak and homemade onion rings. But disappointed with frozen onion rings and under done steak. To top it off I got served flat lager. Shame cos it's a nice place

We were celebrating a special anniversary when we visited, we were greeted with complimentary champagne and ended with a beautiful brownie. Food was delicious and served quickly, staff very welcoming and attentive. Atmosphere was great and the restaurant was very well kept. Will be visiting again!

Everything was cooked to absolute perfection.

My daughter brought me to York for a birthday treat. We didn't know anywhere to eat but booked here on line which was an easy process. We were not disappointed. Everything was perfect, the food tasted so good and We had a lovely time. The seating was comfortable, the decor was beautiful and there was a lovely relaxed atmosphere with music playing and soft lighting. The service was amazing, very nice staff who do a great job. We didn't have to wait a long time for the food to arrive. We recommend the scallops, lamb cutlets and sticky toffee pudding and the coffee. We paid around £120 for two people,not including tip. we went all out and had 3 courses, coffee, drinks and wine. When eating at an unknown restaurant it can make or break your special occaision This experience really made our trip thank you so much.

Lovey food but Rubbish atmosphere. Booked In advance as I heard good reviews. But as several other couples at tables experienced we were sandwiched in with a work Christmas doo. Vulgar experience,loud drunks shouting over tables. We could not hear each other speaking due to the screaming. Would never return or recommend during the festive period .VERY bad management to put couples trying to have a pleasant dinning experience along side a rowdy 10plus table in such a small area!!! Wish we had walked out and saved the expense!

I left a gift bag on the table after my meal with friends that had some gift wrapped jewellery inside. By the time I realised approximately 5 minutes had passed we promptly returned, as we were literally around the corner, to see if the gift bag had been popped to one side. The female staff said nothing had been found, my friend then approached the owner/manager who also said nothing had been handed in, she then asked to see the security footage then as the bag must have been stolen, he then changed his tune and went to the bin and got out my purchase and said only rubbish had been left on the table. My friend pointed out that why was it gift wrapped if it was just rubbish and then why did they open it. He said there was nothing in it. The jewellery had been pushed into the sponge so on looking it looked empty so they then just put it in the bin. She then said you had my contact details from the reservation why didn’t you ring me, he said it was just rubbish on the table, but clearly it wasn’t as it was gift wrapped and the receipt was inside. They didn’t even give us a chance to return. They opened the gift thought it was empty, as they couldn’t see anything as it was pushed into the sponge, so they couldn’t steal anything so then dumped it in the bin. He just laughed at us. Granted I should have taken care of my purchase but as a customer surely they could have given us a little more respect and given us a little chance to return for my purchase instead of trying to steal it. Please be cautious in this restaurant.

My wife and I visited this restaurant a couple of weeks back. Really nice food. However! What's with putting service charges onto bills? If you want a tip, don't put it on. Assuming you should get a tip when in the uk, you actually get paid properly then don't assume to get one. If you went above and beyond in the service and the food then fine I might leave a tip but by you putting it on the bill straight away is in my view rather rude. Other than that everything was great. Just a friendly suggestion.

This must have been the fourth or fifth time we have visited Ate O’Clock, as always food exceptional and staff attentive. However, I would like to comment on where we were seated, it was extremely close to the door leading into the bar, the staff ordering system and the wine storage area. Needless to say the constant stream of traffic was rather of putting, and as a result, made the whole experience less enjoyable. I do understand the need for as many tables as possible, especially this time of the year, as such a popular restaurant, but would say maybe it would be a good idea to remove the table, allowing more room for the staff to go about their duties.
