Visited Arthurs @ Coolings 12:20 Wednesday 3rd April 2024 Others have already mentioned the weird way of ordering food. It is not made very clear the procedures. One lady, whilst I was there, was queuing where they made the coffees, and was being ignored, she was not aware, that you had to stand in the food queue, and order your coffee, before going to where it is made. When I tried to help her, she was instructed by staff, very abruptly, to go to the back of the queue. Whilst the range of home made cakes looked good, you could not find out, which ones where dairy free. The labels were not very clear. Can’t really remember what our cakes that we ordered were called, but for Arthurs ref: they were Cake Special (14) and (11). One was very dry, the other very sweet. The dry one, tasted stale. Coffees Cappuccino and a Latte were nothing out of the ordinary. What was out of the ordinary, was the price. £17.10 for 2 slices of cake and 2 coffees.

This place is a bit of a mess generally, with long queues to order and a bizarre system around choosing a table before ordering but only for certain food and drink and not others. Never experienced a place run so chaotically as this. I ordered the posh fish finger sandwich, supposedly on door stop bread. It arrived on standard bloomer bread, nothing extra thick or “door stop” about it. Though appropriately dressed with salad, tartare sauce and gherkin, the quality of the fish finger was extremely poor, with a grey/brown fish filling rather than the high quality white fillet I was lead to expect. There was nothing ‘posh’ about the quality of the sandwich and at just shy of £10 it is appallingly overpriced for what it was. Especially as it doesn’t come with anything other than a small side salad. Overall, a very disappointing experience and priced way too high.

Was one of the first in the restaurant so expected a nice freshly cooked breakfast and at nearly £15 with an extra slice of toast was expecting something special, how wrong could I be.. Well here goes everything apart from the fried egg ,yolk broke and hard ,mushroom slices barely warm and swimming in oil ,tomato looked raw with herbs over it,small dish of beans again warm ,very small sausage again not very hot but tasty and the smallest hash brown I've ever seen .left the worst till last the bacon could be used to sole shoes and had obviously been hanging around for a while ,the highlight was the toast and butter which i piled everything up on and ate...very disappointing cannot believe a chef/cook would send out such a poor offering ..i know i should have complained and sent it back but i had work to do and had to leave ...was nearly £20 with an excellent coffee twice what i normally pay for an excellent breakfast and leave a very happy chappie ...stick to the coffee and scones.

Arthur’s has dramatically gone downhill the last few weeks. We always have a coffee and a plain/cheese scone. The scone are now a weird triangular shape that is half the size and lately ALWAYS overcooked/burnt and so dry they are impossible to spread the butter onto as they just break up and impossible to cut in half. Sadly we shall be going elsewhere for a while and with luck they will improve.

I was sorry to see the poor reviews. This is an easy dining place in such a lovely garden centre. A great place to meet friends or family in a very relaxed and dog friendly setting. The first time, the ordering and seating arrangements was a little confusing for me, but after a few visits I got it. A good range of food. Had the roast dinner yesterday and it was tasty. The vegetables looked amazing, good variety, although could be hotter. It is popular so get there early if visit g at lunch time on the weekends. Inside and outside dining. I haven’t tried the cakes, but they look amazing.

I went to Arthurs this morning with a friend and her dog. The restaurant was very disorganised, tables not cleared, had to queue more than half an hour for service , cakes counter lacked its usual fabulous display of cakes and when I was eventually got served I paid more than £7 for 1 doggy sausage, a pot of boiling water and 2 tea bags which I had to go back and get as they were forgotten). I go to Arthurs regularly and recommend it to family and friends but today was very disappointing and embarrassing. Please sort your staffing issues and get back to what you do well.

Sadly Arthur’s Cafe at Coolings has gone steeply downhill. Today I was served a Tuna Melt panini with a salad garnish. The blackened mouldy dried up salad & radishes were unfit to feed a rabbit. (See photo) The Panini was vile & tasted like something one would feed to a cat.

We recently went to Arthurs restaurant at Coolings. DREADFUL. We have been many times before but not for a while. I ordered burger and chips. What turned up after costing £15 was rock hard, tasteless and very chewy. Even the chips were burnt. I didnt eat it all. Also all the GF menu choices seem to have disappeared. My wife who did not want to go through the conversation with a clueless person of what has wheat in decided on a ham hock, egg and chips. Again costs approx £15. What turned up tasted funny, chips undercooked and she did not eat all of it either. The order took over 40 mins to turn up and the restaurant was half empty. We will NOT be back in a hurry.

My wife and I went to Arthur’s for lunch but won’t be returning. The pared down menu is overpriced with such a limited selection compared to what used to be available. Also the lady who took out order was very curt when asked about accommodating an alternative, felt as if she didn’t want to be there. There were also several dogs in the restaurant who started barking at each other, so much so that my wife and I couldn’t hear each other speak, so decided to leave and won’t be returning.

I had lunch there today with my parents and have had lunch at Arthur's many times before. We were so disappointed with our lunch today. We had jacket potatoes which was just a potato with some topping shoved in a bowl. It used to come with a salad and dressing. But today there was no salad. It cost £9 for basically just a potato with a bit of tuna. It looked pathetic sitting in this bowl, which had annoying paper under it which just started to fall apart into the food. We really used to enjoy going to Arthur's for lunch but after today we won't be going back. We will be going to Polhill which serves a decent portion, with salad and at a decent cost. Such a shame the standard has really dropped.

After queuing to go in and order for about 20 minutes, we then found we were meant to get a table number and then queue up. But the queue was out if the door so we had no way of knowing this until we got inside! We ordered two jacket potatoes with tuna and 1 sweet chilli chicken Panini. Three coffees and two slices of cake to takeaway.. Total £48.20. We then waited for 45 minutes for the food to come! I was surprised that there was no salad garnish on the side, so £9.95 for a jacket potato with a scoop of Tuna Mayonnaise does seem steep! The Panini looked nice (£9.50) but none of the food was hot. It was just warm. I love a crispy jacket on a potato but these were literally so crispy my dad and I couldn’t eat them. Coffees were hot. Cups filled to the brim. Tricky to pick up. My dad said “Never Again”

Very disappointed with the food. Their COVID measures are excellent but the quality of the food was not. We ordered sausage, mash and peas and our friend had a scone. The scones are usually good but hers was very dry and she thought it had been cooked the day before. When our meals arrived they looked very appetising but the sausages were so overcooked they were chewy and difficult to cut and the mashed potato had a skin over it where I presume it had been ready cooked and the re-heated, even the peas were hard. The meal was so bad I complained at the serving counter. To give them their due the meals were replaced immediately without any argument. The sausages were freshly cooked this time but tasted cheap and bland and the mash and peas were still the same. It is a great shame, Arthur’s used to be the place where you could be assured of good quality food, obviously not any more.

I had recently put a review on the main coolings garden Centre page, but having spoken to the manager there today realise it should have gone on this page. So please refer to that posting for more details of our bad experience of afternoon tea. This was for my mum's 95th birthday so we wanted it to be nice. The table had been booked for two people, but on arrival, the very rude waitress informed us in no uncertain terms that we had booked for 3, and would have to pay for the three. She eventually agreed we could only pay for the 2, but there were other things wrong. We were given a table over in the corner and my mum was offered no assistance with her walking frame, we were offered no alternative to regular breakfast tea, and were not offered more tea, and had to ask when a much pleasanter waitress did bring us more The first waitress made us feel very uncomfortable and was very rude. We have been up today and manager offered us a refund, for which we are grateful. However, we should not have had this experience in the first place. Afternoon tea is meant to be a pleasant relaxing experience

Arthur's is in Cooling's garden centre and what a lovely find, we have been back a few times, the food, specially the chips are very nice. They do a roast dinner on a Sunday which is good value too. Why a 4 not a five? The seating can be a bit hit and miss you take a reserve sign, find a table then go and order, if they are busy - your reserve sign can get moved off when they clear tables. The staff are lovely, but sometimes not enough if they are busy and you can end up queueing to order quite a while. But all in all the food is lovely, staff very pleasant and a mid week visit is a good idea

I have been going to Arthurs for many years but I am very sorry to say that my last visit on Sunday could well be my last. I would never intentionally post a negative comment but I was very saddened at the standard/poor quality of food served. I ordered a mature cheddar cheese and onion chutney sandwich and when it was brought to my table it consisted of a very, very tiny about of grated processed cheese and a big dollop of boiled red onions. Yuk!! It was quite disgusting. The boiled red onions were clearly the leftovers from the breakfast sausage baguettes or something similar and did not resemble onion 'chutney' at all! In fairness, I did ask the young server if she could add more cheese which she did indeed do - so I thank you for that. However, after trying to munch my way through the remaining sandwich I felt quite ill. A boiled onion sandwich is most unpleasant! I left half of it, finished my cup of tea and left. My husband ordered the ham, egg and chips and was not impressed with the processed slab of ham that was served. Not a good experience and no longer good value for money!! I am very sad that lovely Arthurs is not what it used to be.

I wanted to treat my friend to lunch at this garden centre cafe. We ordered toasted sandwiches, which are served with a side salad. The sandwich was fine, but the salad was dotted with pieces of black slime. Not just some, but most leaves had some of this blackish residue. And many of the leaves were yellow, so were obviously old. It was all very off putting (photo attached). When I went to point this out to a member of staff, anticipating that they would replace this with something better, I was told that this was how the salad came out of the plastic bag! I was expecting more from a restaurant based in an excellent garden nursery, Coolings, which sells very high quality fruit and vegetable plants. Even if the salad was old, surely, the staff could have replaced this with something else? The tomatoes and cucumber were fine, so offer more of this. No, they clearly cannot move from the menu. No offer of a refund either.

Having visited Coolings with my mother since it first opened, I always take her to breakfast on Mother's Day. With the 'restaurant ' drastically changing over the years and not necessarily for the better, it was extremely disappointing to find today that they had a greatly reduced menu selection because it was Mother's Day. When I questioned why this was I was told that it's too busy and they have done this for the past two years. This is rubbish! I have taken my Mother there every year and it's been the full breakfast menu. I also take my father there for Father's Day and it's always the standard menu. Why have this number of covers if it is impossible to cater for and why not put on the website that it's a 'scaled down' menu for Mother's Day. What a pity it's now an outside company and more about a money spinner than customer satisfaction.

Have given Arthurs 2 very good reviews before so I am always fair but this visit was a disappointment. Have to agree with Emma S75 and Vic J and I don't think I'll be back either. I did fill in a feedback form and was told the new menu was for events days but as it turns out they have brought in a catering company so maybe its permanent? I noticed a couple of other people looking confused and looking for the old menu (events menu - whats that??) Anyway the food.....I had an egg mayo sandwich which was ok but the salad is not as good and was covered in awful vegetable crisps which I had to take off. My daughter had a ham and cheese baguette with the same salad but the ham was dry and gristly. My partner had roast turkey, the meat was fine but the potatoes very hard; maybe could be used on a rockery?? Veggies not that great either. We didn't complain because it was just so busy. A shame as it used to be so nice and I was looking forward to the egg and cheese salad they used to do. : ( Have to say though that the staff cope well under pressure. Oh and 1 other last thing the small bottles of wine for 1 are £4.65 - seems a lot!

We have been coming to Arthur’s restaurant in Coolings for many years. Unfortunately today’s visit has put us off coming back. The menu has changed and reduced, I would say substantially, of course this is not always a bad thing. I ordered a tuna and cheese toastie, at the cost of £6.95, when it arrived it looked very sad on the plate, when I looked into the sandwich there was barely any tuna, literally a sprinkling. Also none of our plates had the vegetable crisps on, as per the menu, and the salad on the plate was very sad looking. I did take the lunch to someone behind the till, who offered several times to replace the sandwich. Unfortunately I was reluctant to do so as the rest of my family was already eating. Really disappointed with today’s visit, with lunch costing £38 for four people, (it has never been that expensive there) and the quality of the food pretty poor. We won’t be back, which is a real shame.

This cafeteria is located within Coolings Garden Centre. It is very welcoming and overlooks a garden which you can walk round. Lovely to visit any time of year as you can wander round the nursery and then go in for either a hot of cold meal. Neary always busy which is a good sign and the food is well cooked and not over priced.

This is the restaurant within Cooling's Garden Centre on Rushmore Hill near Knockholt, so there's plenty of parking space. The restaurant is spacious, bright and comfortable with outside seating if the weather is fair. The staff are pleasant and the menu includes breakfast, light snacks and main meal options brought to your table. We just visited for coffee but the food looked good.

Great place to have a tea and a slice of cake or have lunch with family or friends. Good value, freshly cooked food. Lots of seating. They have a main menu and also a specials board which changes regularly. The carrot cake is excellent which is a firm favourite of mine. It's great that you can take your dog to the restaurant to sit outside on the patio area, they also have a dog Icecream which my dog loves.

Can recommend the breakfast which is cooked to order....it's certainly fresh!

This excellent eating place is in Coolings Garden Centre. We call in from time to time for a snack or lunch. The breakfast menu is up to 11.30 am after that it is main meals, but you can always get a bun or soup and a roll. They also do Sunday Roasts but we have not tried those yet. All the food that we have had has been good. Lunchtimes are usually very busy. Part of the restaurant is built on the lines of a barn ( the walls and roof, modern, no straw or cobwebs here) they seem to have used old traditional methods, no nuts and bolts, oak (?) beams jointed and pegged, there is a nice old fashioned style fireplace, it's worth a visit just to see these structures. The staff and service have always been 1st class, it's not the cheapest but well worth the little extra. There is an outside seating area. Within the garden centre is a pet shop stores and a car valet service.

Been coming here for a couple of years, it's always busy during lunch something to do with retired people!!! But food always well presented, and delivered timely. We have been to a few various garden centres with cafe's, but have to say Arthur's is probably one of the best out there. Would give it 5 stars, but with no WiFi, and poor mobile signal you can feel a bit isolated. All that aside, would definitely recommend it.

Lovely restaurant and gardens, food was very enjoyable and helpings were large although my quiche was not very big but very tasty. Didn't like the idea of queuing to order your food, especially if you are buying ice cream as it has melted by the time you get served, all in all though a relaxing place to spend some time in

We woke up this morning and thought we would have breakfast at Arthur's. We arrived at opening time and ordered one of their set breakfasts. How disappointing. The sausages and bacon were overcooked and the rest of the meal was only luke warm. I have a feeling that they pre cook a batch of food and heat it up when customers first arrive. Looking at breakfasts that were brought out later they looked much better. I have used Arthur's for many many years and I do feel that as they expand their food gets more expensive and of a poorer quality. I should have complained at the time but all they would have done is offer me something else and by then I wasn't hungry anymore!

Lovely setting and gardens and have eaten well in Arthur's before. First go at breakfast and rather disappointed. Cooked breakfast the only option (though good they offer a veggie option). Continental would have been nice as another option. I only like eggs scrambled so tried to request this instead of fried/poached - nah. Then tried to request something else instead of egg, e.g. extra sausage - nah, stopped doing substitutes. Offered the dearer 'self select' option - at least included toast (extra for the other breakfasts) so chose that. All drinks extra likewise marmalade. To be fair it was served quickly and well presented - and most important it was really delicious especially the hash browns my friend turned up her nose at. No worries I ate it for her!!

Obviously a popular destination as many people come just for a meal and then a stroll in the nursery afterwards. Pleasant enough surroundings and the meal we had before continuing with our plant searching was really good. Reserve a table by placing a sign on a vacant table and go and select your meal at your leisure. Our meal was very good - an iconic 'ham, eggs and chips' and a pulled pork burger.

Took my mother here today. Always lovely to browse the enormous range of plants and then end up in their cafe/restaurant. There is a reasonable choice of good food - snacks or cooked meals and the service and standard is very good. Being a Sunday there were three choices of roast on offer. My mother had the roast beef and said it was the best she had had in a long time. I had the Wholetail scampi and can recommend it. Lots of vegetarian options too. Then off the browse some more plants afterwards.

If you're looking for atmosphere, Arthur's at Coolings cannot be bettered. Elderly Mum and I lunched on delicious food at our table overlooking the beautiful Spring garden. It's always busy, but Arthurs is a great place to eat partly because of that...I hate to sit in splendid isolation when I'm eating out! We weren't hurried and the staff were friendly and efficient. For a very busy venue, the ordering system works well. Reserve your table then order and you won't have to wander around with a tray of hot food. The last points I want to make are - don't be in a hurry and you get what you pay for. Arthur's is not the cheapest or quickest, but it has a certain feel-good factor about it.

We visited the restaurant this morning for breakfast as a family. I have to say this was quite possibly the worst breakfast, service and all round experience I have had for some time.. Firstly the staff member was completely unfriendly and unhelpful. My partner does not eat eggs, or mushrooms so usually any restaurant we go to would accommodate this and let us swap something for these.. As the breakfast didn't come with hash browns I asked if he could have one of these instead of eggs, and mushrooms... NO. I was told. You have to pay extra... Harsh I thought.. I then said ok I will have a side of hash browns please. How many come in a portion? One I was told.. Ok I will have two please.... How much extra is that.. £2.80....Nearly £3 for two oil filled hash browns.. Not potato rostis which I would perhaps accept as being a little more expensive.. No a hash Brown from a big frozen bag.. Absolutely appalling. The breakfast came, luke warm, and un appealing.. I shall leave a review on trip advisor and will NOT be returning to your restaurant. I will instead spend my money in other more friendly value for money establishments who care more about customer satisfaction than their prices. Utterly disappointed.

This is my 1st review for Arthur's even though I've been coming here a long time.I really like it.It isn't cheap. But, the service is good, the cakes are great ( Gluten free and Dairy free and Vegan choices )There is a daily specials board - not that I bother to look because I'm here for the VEGAN shepherds pie!!My friend has it ( she isn't Vegan )But raves about it and I love it Please Chef, start a business and get this Shepherds pie on the shelves at the Supermarkets !!The veg isn't sitting under a heater turning to mush like a lot of restaurants (Ruxley - for example )It's fresh and the colour it's meant to be with a crunch.I'm happy to pay more and get the quality I want. The DAIRY FREE Mushroom soup is fabby!!My favourite cake is the Beetroot and Mixed seed which is DAIRY FREE and AMAZING !! ⭐️⭐️Well done everyone. for Chef for bothering to cater for people who wish to avoid meat even if it's for a meat free day !!xxxPs SOYA milk is also available !!

We have visited Arthurs a few times for a bite to eat. It seems a popular place and finding a free table can be a challenge at times however there are lots of tables and I note that they plan to expand the indoor seating soon. We have really enjoyed the home made scones (£1.80) and this is a personal recommendation. The last time we visited was a Sunday and they had a roast dinner for £10.95 which seemed popular and meals such as ham agg & chips were around £8.95. They also offer a set breakfast up until 11:30 for under £5 which is worth a try. The drinks may look a bit expensive with coffee upwards of £2.60 but a pot of tea is a good option from which 2 to 3 cups can be made however they will only supply one cup (probably to stop people sharing) but some might find a way around that. The service is reasonable, the surroundings are excellent and generally Arthurs is clean and tidy (including the toilets which are excellent).

The only reason we go to Arthurs is there really isn't any competition and I think that is the crux of the problem. It is boring with a very unimaginative menu. On Monday I had one of the worst Leek and Potato soups I have ever had, didn't taste like leek and potato and having asked for brown bread it arrived with a white roll. Oh she said they probably thought it was brown and when the brown one arrived I understood why - the white and brown rolls look the same. When I think of all the lovely artisan bread there is around which would be lovely and make the plate look far more attractive. Why don't they bring back wraps. Toasted sandwiches are not very appetising. The ordering system is poor. You reserve a table, then order your food from the servery and it is brought to your table - can be up to 10 minutes later. So if you have a hot drink that has to be ordered with the food and is cold by the time you drink it. Why not have a system of returning to the coffee machines with a ticket when you have eaten your lunch. I was offered a card to complete on Monday but declined as I have completed them before and no notice is taken. For tea it is OK but lunch no. I go to lots of garden centres all over the country and Arthurs is one of the worst. It is now starting to look shabby, it needs a refurbishment and a new intake of chefs with imagination to bring the food up to date. No more fish and chips, Pie and mash and sad salads. Let's have some interesting continental options attractively presented not just slopped on the plate.

My husband and I had lunch for the first time at Arthur's, although before we have had super breakfasts there. I ordered one of their beer battered fish, chips and salad, and although the restuarant was very busy we served very quickly with our order and it was very tasty and a good dish of fish and chips. We think the staff have a very good system of clearing tables and always helpful and polite. We will definitely go for lunch there again and alway read the daily specials board for some of their lovely homemade dishes. Joan and Tony Butlin

We visited for the Christmas Craft market on 4th December. In need of tea and coffee we popped into Arthurs at about 2.30pm. We had 1 coffee and walnut cake, 1 chocolate and guinness cake and 1 apple pie; all very delicious. I don't usually eat cakes but the coffee and walnut was really lovely. We saw some people having roasts (Huge portions!) and might try that ourselves our selves. Just make sure you get a table before you go up to order. Only thing that niggled was 1 member of staff who I think was a bit harassed asked " Have you got a table" rather abruptly. Just ask more calmly!
