Arrived around 4pm on a Thursday to be told no sweet treats of any description and coffee machine was broken. Fair enough. Earl Grey tea according to my husband was nice however my filter coffee was lukewarm and grainy. Not pleasant. After we’d been seated several tables arriving after us ordered and received cakes so that was annoying. Service was mediocre at best, we got the impression staff felt like they were doing us a favour. We won’t won’t be returning.

I have wonderful memories of having tea at Liberty’s with my mom. However that classic little tea room is gone; replaced by a nondescript restaurant with little to recommend it except the dubious cachet of dining at Liberty’s. I ordered the Eggs Royale; a variation of Eggs Benedict with Scottish smoked salmon instead of the usual bacon. It took an inordinate amount of time to arrive and when it did, one poached egg was as hard as a rock and the other barely cooked. The Hollandaise sauce was an improbable shade of orange, which probably should have given me a clue of what was to come, but this was Liberty’s, so I ignored the clue and soldiered on, much to my disappointment. There are many places to lunch in London. In future, I will skip this one.

Arrived looking forward to a bite to eat we were quickly shown to a table and promptly forgotten about. People were being shown to tables and depending on the position in the restaurant decided how quickly you would be served. After 20 minutes of trying to attract anyone’s attention we gave up and started to leave, that’s when someone offered to rush our order but by that time we had decided to take our business elsewhere.

I thought I would grab a quick bite to eat and have a look round this iconic store. The building is amazing and the store fits in well amongst it, with the exception of Arthur's Restaurant which seems to be a 70s throwback. I was greeted nicely and shown to a table, it felt very much like that corner of the holiday hotel with the empty bar and 70s decor. I ordered a latte and gluten-free steak sandwich. The latte was weak and warm with no real flavour. The steak sandwich was nice, small, but nice with good flavour. Small pieces of nicely cooked beef with a well dressed garnish. Did I mention it was small? As in side plate small! Then the bill arrived, it was around £23 and you could hear my Yorkshire mating cry of "how much!?" Across London! The latte was a reasonable £2.95, the rest was the small, did I mention it was small?, Sandwich and a discretionary service charge! Which I swiftly removed! The young guy who served me was friendly and helpful, however, some of the staff obviously didn't want to be there and this was visible in their body language... I wouldn't recommend this as it is not an experience commensurate with the surroundings, a trick I think Liberty's has missed as it could be so much more!

Ordered salad and soup. Still no sign of it after 45 minutes. Prosecco and tea took 30 minutes to appear. Not the standard I expect from the Liberty brand.

We were in Liberty of London shopping in their wonderful Christmas shop when we realized we hadn’t eaten lunch yet. We found Arthur’s and while they were very busy and service was a bit slow, the food was excellent. The salmon salade Nicoise was very fresh and tasty. The portion was generous. They also had a drink they called ice tea but was really a fruity tea concoction. Not sweet at all. Just refreshing and yummy. The club sandwich was also very good, piled high with chicken, bacon, lettuce and tomato. The tomatoes on both were ripe and fresh.

The staff is friendly and very focused. The shop is mega busy and the food prep area is always spotless. The food displayed doesn’t stay more than one hour before it’s all gone and brought fresh again
