Visited this lovely bakery on Sunday for the first time. The range of bakery items is outstanding with reasonable prices and friendly staff. The carrot cake especially is so yummy. A must go to bakery in Wells.

I popped in for a bacon sandwich- never again will I go to Howells Bakery for one of these awful offerings A large flowery bap, some awful and cheap “rind on “ bacon and some insipid thin saugages- easily the worst breakfast roll I have ever purchased. Not cooked fresh but luke warm from a hot dish. Lots of other outlets in Wells produce a far superior product. Stick to selling bread and meat products. My roll was thrown to the seagulls in the harbour!! A complete waste of money.

This place has everything you need to satisfy your hunger. We wanted a quick snack to keep us going. I had a lovely BLT while the Mrs had a tuna mayo and coffee. To finish off we had a cake each which were both perfect. Other eateries seemed pretentious and too expensive this was very good.

Popped in as a trip to Wells isn't complete until I've been to this bakery. Picked up two types of tiffin and strawberry slices. All products are seriously massive and so tasty. It's not a big shop and expect to queue out the door in tourist season. Only one lady on the shop floor but she was nice and friendly. Some people might think the shop needs updating but I say leave it as it is, it's like taking a step back in time to when I was a child and my mum took me to the local bakery.

Always consistent on taste and value! The sandwiches and rolls aren’t to be overlooked as they are generously filled and tasty. The choice of sweet treats is *almost* overwhelming but I always manage to choose one (or three) things! The bread and rolls are lovely and have that traditional bakery flavour. Service and staff always friendly and warm. Recommended!

So much choice of savoury or sweet (or both) we purchased a selection of cakes, all delicious (especially the lemon meringue pie) and the beef and vegetable pasty was lovely, with soft, flaky pastry. On one occasion we did feel a little rushed to order and was told quite bluntly that they were closing. I felt this was early considering it was a nice day and lots of people around. To say they rely on tourism it wouldn’t hurt to stay open a few extra minutes.

My wife adores Bakewell Tarts, so we went inside to enquire. The two female assistants were engrossed in their own conversation and completely ignored us and carried on talking. We spotted the said Bakewell tarts and asked how much they were , and could we buy one. Again without any eye contact we were served our tart in a paper bag without any hint of politeness or thanks. When the Clan Connington descend on Wells as they do every October and bags are deposited in rooms and the first pots of tea made then consumed amidst constant kitchen filled chatter a few high spirited individuals will venture out on to Staithe street and the first shop to be visited is Howell's bakery. We have evolved over the years from a white bread based clan to a white, mixed grain, wholemeal and granary group of healthier (seeking if not always finding) souls and have more demanding, diverse palates. Each choice is an acclamation to the art of bread making. Even the Gingerbread man will queue patiently for his loaf of choice. We have changed from massive traditional breakfasts to an occasional bacon sandwich with more eggs on toast, porridge and bran flakes playing a more prominent part in our breakfast routine. however Howell's is an ever present. Whatever day you choose we will all at some point sample, devour, and need to replenish a loaf of Howell's heavenly bread. Yes it does make me wax lyrical and you will to. Try a bun, they are fun, an éclair I dare, a guilty scone to fill with jam and eat alone, a treacle tart to make you ….feel good. I could go on but I won't I will say the staff are always of a sunny disposition and as is the way of some shops on the high street it a place to exchange pleasantries and find out news ( the bank is closing what will happen to the cash dispense? A serious matter) with locals and other holiday makers. So its not just the bread, it is mainly the bread but it is all the other add ons that make it a nice place to visit. Of course there is a sense of nostalgia because in a changing world, one where we get older and younger additions join us habits change but Howell's have been serving the Conningtons for nigh on thirty years and four generations ( and me for some of that). Visiting and buying our bread is like slipping into an old comfortable cardigan or well used flip flops and the signal that the holiday has started. We will buy a loaf or two to come home with when we leave.

When in Wells-next-the-Sea my son wanted to nip into Arthur Howell's Bakery for a simple doughnut... Twenty minutes (and I am not exaggerating here) after entering he left without a doughnut as he got fed up with waiting to be served. It was a busy Sunday morning (28th May) and he said that everyone in the queue in front of him was waiting for hot breakfast rolls and there was only one member of staff in the shop preparing each breakfast roll individually, hence everyone in the line was having to wait whether wanting a hot breakfast roll or something nice and easy, (like a doughnut), from the bakery counter! May I please suggest that management have a person focused on the breakfast rolls at peak times, (if you want to be a "take-away cafe" as well as a "bakery"), and assign another member of staff who can serve all those not wanting to wait for breakfast baguettes to be made!!

We always go here although lately things have been not been so good. The choice is perfect with so many different things, and in the Summer season I think there is nothing what so ever to complain about. Everything is fresh, cooked to perfection, fresh rolls tasty.BUT! out of season they have a few problems with not so many customers & getting rid of the cakes, thus selling things that aren't quite so good. Everytime we have been lately it's a case of 'oh dear', won't have that again. They would do better to sell things cheaper when not so fresh & advertise not at their best, but also sell the same fresh thing and give the customer a choice. If you went and sometimes had the older things you'd think this is what their cakes tasted like (not so good). But we know from lots and lots of visits that when their cakes are fresh they are soooo good. Some staff could be friendlier, We used to spend a fortune in here, but everytime we try again it's not so fresh. Shame, perfect seaside, lovely little bakery. If you read this Alex please think about how you could work better with the not so fresh items. Best iced coffee ever! A regular here, staff always helpful and polite. Place is always clean and tidy. Food is always freshly cooked. Dogs always welcomed with a bowl of fresh water and a butcher's sausage. Today after a stressful morning I needed a nice friendly place to go. No brainer! Megs and an iced coffee, all is right again with the world. Thanks Thomaz

We popped in for a light lunch.I had Cornish pasty with salad followed by the tastiest homemade apple pie.My friend had the quiche and then carrot cake.Superb food and reasonable prices.Served by a friendly team. All in all a nice experience.

Found this open on the last day of our short break and left wishing it had been open earlier in the week. The best vibes and coffee in Holt by a long mile.
