Arlo in Newcastle upon Tyne

Love this cafe/ restaurant! My boyfriend and I had the best breakfast this morning of their Hangover Crumpet and Eggs Benedict. They were full when we arrived ( always a good sign) so they switched on the heaters and gave us blankets outside while we waited and then we got our table. Such good customer service, the staff are all so friendly. Definitely a new favourite breakfast stop in Jesmond and can’t wait to try a cake!

Very good service in this friendly, informal bistro. Visited at lunchtime, when it was busy, which added to the buzzy atmosphere. Well worth a visit.

In NE for a family wedding and decided to have breakfast here with our family of five rather than the hotel. Best decision we made, superb food and fantastic atmosphere a must visit place if you are in the area, not just for breakfast but lunch or dinner. Don’t be fooled by inferior imitations with similar names especially in the SE of the country!

Couldn’t recommend Arlo’s enough. The interior is incredibly welcoming, homely, and oozing with personality. The customer service is always outstanding, and every time I’ve been the owner’s been there. You can clearly tell he really cares and is passionate about what he does, a lovely man! On this occasion I had the smashed avocado and it was phenomenal - just like everything else I’ve tried here! Top tip - if you go you’ve got to try the chocolate brownie, it’s the best one I’ve ever had in my life!!!

Just had brunch with my wife. We pop into Arlo's from time to time but this is the first time that I have written a review. My wife and I have always loved this restaurant for its quality and warm welcome. This morning we had brunch with the best coffee anywhere in Newcastle (try the Cortado). The food was of the highest quality but it was the service in particular that led to me writing this review. It was outstanding!

I would highly recommend booking, I did not but we were incredibly lucky to get a seat. I wouldn’t risk it again as the restaurant was really busy and it’s not worth missing out on the food. For those who have not been Arlo is a mix of quirky decor with something to catch your eye on every wall but it’s also warm and inviting. The staff are friendly and really efficient and they need to be there was a steady stream coming in for breakfast, takeaway coffee and cake. I had the hangover crumpet and the boys had toasted Belgian waffles. We ordered two lovely smoothies and I had a flat white too. I have to say they were all bloody lovely! A hangover is not a prerequisite for ordering this dish and I’d strongly recommend you do order it. The highlights were the small pieces of spicy sausage that were almost crispy on the edges and the spicy sauce but everything on the plate added flavour and it’s one of the tastiest things I’ve eaten recently. The kids both dusted the waffles and I was only offered a taste as a straight exchange for some of mine which I reluctantly agreed to. Having said that the waffles were fantastic too so in the end worth the swap. So impressed were we that we bought five cakes to take home with us, supposed to be shared later that evening between four but the eldest had his eye on one he’d selected and ate it that afternoon whilst the coast was clear! The cakes were every bit as good as they looked and as the food we ate earlier that day. Overall I can’t recommend Arlo enough and I can see why it’s so busy. The food was really tasty and it’s a great place to head for a weekend brunch. Again I wouldn’t take the risk in turning up, book to avoid disappointment!! (I will next time)

I booked for my birthday. My boyfriend contacted without me knowing and let them know we were celebrating, and they organised a brownie free of charge. Such lovely service! Food was amazing too.

Dropped into Arlo for a Sunday breakfast treat. Place was full and it looks as if they were turning people away, luckily we had booked a table. We both ordered the full English which comes with bacon, sausage, mushroom, tomato, beans, eggs the way you want them and toast. All good apart from the bacon, which appeared to be left under the hot lamps for far too long. Couldn't even cut it, it was that hard. Service was excellent as usual. First time we have been disappointed with our meal and unfortunatley it spoilt our little treat

Love popping into Arlo for food and drinks. Indoor and outdoor seating available, my fave is prob the outdoor terrace. Great menu with a wide selection of choices. The decor is warm and welcoming. Staff are always cheery and helpful. Highly recommended!

Excellent food & service! Went for breakfast with my parents who are hard to pleased and they loved it! The service was spot on and the breakfast was up there with the best in Newcastle. Only negative was the noise but can't complain about other Sunday guest's enjoying themselves! Thanks Arlo!

Awesome place, we got in without booking, but I would suggest that booking is essential. Food, service and staff are all excellent! I would definitely recommend this place for both daytime catch ups/lunch and also for a really nice evening bar.

Small place but with a bustling atmosphere. Hard to park but it's Jesmond. Food all decent stuff and plenty of drinks to choose from. Staff and patrons all bustling about which gives the place a nice energy. Would pop in again if I was close by. The owner with the hat on was cool.

We have just spent a very enjoyable afternoon at Arlos Jesmond. Lucas the owner is always welcoming and makes customers feel valued. Our food choices were nicely presented and were very tasty together with some great value wines! Both Henry and Alicia provided excellent service and they ensured we had a very pleasant experience. We will definitely revisit very soon!

Went for breakfast and it was all fantastic. The Middle Eastern breakfast was genuinely the best breakfast meal I've ever had. Could not recommend more. Had plenty of choice on the Gluten Free menu too for my partner who also really enjoyed it

Great tapas with a continental feel. Great for vegetarian and gluten free food and lovely cocktails. Staff were very friendly and knowledgeable and they welcomed the dogs too. Bringing a water bowl out before we even sat down

We just had coffees here about three months ago. The service was very slow and the waitress was very off hand. The table was also not clean so what should have been a relaxing 30 mins was a rushed unpleasant 10 mins. We now go to Lemongrass which has also just opened in Brentwood,Jesmond. Excellet food and service, very reasonable prices. Dabbawal is also very good.

First time at Arlo today. Absolutely excellent. Lovely vibes and decor, food was 10/10 and the staff were superb. No long wait times, quick and attentive service. For the first time in a while was more than happy to tip! Will be back very soon!

Nice enough place with friendly staff but food is very over priced. £16 for a few bits of hot smoked salmon with lettuce, some flakes of bacon and Parmesan dust.

Drinks and snacks with friends. Staff couldn’t be nicer, an absolute credit to the restaurant. They are so friendly and personable, couldn’t be more obliging. Food was great and so was the Rose! Thank you!

We booked Arlos for our daughter’s 21st birthday. A large table combining family and friends of my daughter, so a potentially challenging party! Our evening was exceptional. The restaurant is well appointed, with a really nice atmosphere. The food was beautiful, and the staff couldn’t do enough for us - Ava and Steph were amazing and deserve special mention. The perfect celebration.

Lovely ambience and delicious food.

Previously very positive experiences, but very poor today. Refused to serve us from the breakfast menu, despite being well within the breakfast menu period, because they were too busy. The 10 empty tables told a different story. Shame- because the food is good, if the staff can be bothered to serve you.

The hangover crumpet is something special. I’ve been for many of the classic breakfasts places in Newcastle and this is easily my favourite so far. The cakes are phenomenal too.

I used to really rate Arlo years ago, but now I just don’t get the hype at all. The decor is beautiful and the staff are lovely, but the service is so slow and the food is so average and overpriced. The lunch menu isn’t great, there isn’t much choice. The burger I had today was dry and tasteless, and the other people at my table said their food was ok but nothing special. The Korean beef salad I had last time left me hungry. We waited so long to order drinks, and at the end of the meal we had to get up and ask to pay the bill. Overall I just don’t think the food is worth the money they’re charging.

So popular on a Sunday you have to get a booking or take your chance as its full everytime we go

An incredibly reliable spot for breakfast! Staff are always super friendly, service is quick and food never disappoints! They also have a cracking display of sweet treats, cakes and brownies for those who love to indulge in the naughtiness!

Staff could not have been more friendly, helpful and accommodating when we brought my very elderly mother-in-law (in a wheelchair) for a cup of tea and some cake. We had a lovely experience, food was wonderful and service too. I would strongly recommend this place but would advise that you book a table in advance as it is busy.

It excels at mediocrity. Just like most other places in Jesmond the service is good and there's a healthy selection of beverages. And? Why pay £20 for a mediocre beer and burger? Oh. Oh. I forgot. They do chips. It's very small inside and the noise level very quickly rises. My daughter, 17 and neuro divergent refuses to go.

Spent a great afternoon here with friends. Food and drinks were amazing. We had some home baked cakes too, they were awesome. Can't wait to come back.👍👍

Best service ever! The Japanese Tempura Cod stands on its own as an established entity. I’ve nothing to fault but I want to note that I’ll be back soon .

Best cake and coffee in Newcastle. Lightest lemon cake I’ve had. Staff all very attentive and polite. It’s not cheap but the portions are so big , you don’t paying that extra money. I would recommend booking.

Came here for a NYE meal with my boyfriend. We had the bread to start, both had the burger and a few cocktails, and took a cake each home. It was our first time at Arlo and we will def be back! The food was so fresh and delicious, it was really cute inside and all the staff were really friendly and welcoming. Would def recommend. (Also the red velvet cake I took home was AMAZING!) Thank you to all the staff for a lovely evening :)

This is a favourite place to visit when in Newcastle. Lovely feel. Gorgeous food and staff are always friendly. Would definitely recommend.

Can’t think why anyone would be dissatisfied with the food at Arlo. That fact that is always busy and has lots of regulars who return time after time is testimony to the fact it’s very good. The menu is varied and changes regularly. The development chef produces imaginative dishes calling on flavours from all over the world. Yes the service can be slow at times but that’s because it’s so busy and food is cooked fresh to order. Also there is a gap in service from 11.45 until around 12.15 while the kitchen changes from breakfast to lunch service, Drinks, scones ( best in town ) and cakes ( made by in house baker) are available during this period.

Excellent service and great food on wife’s birthday for lunch. Lively atmosphere. Lovely and friendly staff who took account of all requests and made sure we had a great meal. Prosecco to star. Food portions are a good size with plenty of choice and very tasty. Nice touch with a sparkly candle on a chocolate cake for my wife at the end of the meal and unexpectedly! Don’t believe any review which gives this place less than 4-5 stars. A nice gem in Jesmond and we will keep coming back 👌

Lovely cosy place! They were incredibly responsive and accommodating of my odd plant based requests 😆 the menu offered two plant based options for breakfast: the now traditional avocado toast and a breakfast that can be adapted to plant based. No scrambled tofu or the likes but still great experience, everyone is friendly and welcoming.

Lovely atmosphere and location. Extremely slow service. over 15 mins to get seen by a waiter and then a further 20-25 mins for food after which our drinks still had not been served. Food average. Nice ingredients clearly but not mind blowing and for the cost, my wife and I were left very disappointed by the experience. £52 for breakfast (2x full english) and a couple of drinks was very disappointed given the level of service/overall experience

We don’t visit Jesmond too often but when visiting a nearby shop, we thought we’d have a light lunch nearby. There are several eateries on and near Brentwood Avenue. This Friday lunchtime, Arlo was easily the most popular and we managed to get a table without reservation (just!). It’s an urban chic vibe - a bit like the smarter London suburbs. Nice decor, buzzy atmosphere and very friendly staff. The menu is quite varied. We shared a salmon salad and loaded fries - enough for a light lunch. I’d say that the food was ‘just ok’. It could have been a little more inventive and seemed to rely on store cupboard ingredients - but pleasant enough. Decent wine and very good coffee. A pleasant lunch in a nice location. Put it on your list if you’re in town.

Been a few years since we last visited, still seems busy, but was did stand out was the prices, too pricey for average simple breakfasts , small portion sizes too and £3.90 for a latte(service charge on top too) just too much sorry….. feel like need to make their mind up to mange costs they are having to manage- either through higher price / smaller portions- but not both!…., staff were lovely and attentive

We visited Arlo's yesterday afternoon around 4:30. The welcoming couldn't have been more friendly or warm. The food was superb and the advice given by the staff was fantastic. Can't wait to visit again.

I booked a table for 7.30 which worked well as it wasn’t too busy. We ordered five small plates between the two of us and shared them. This was more than enough. The service was fantastic. The staff seemed really well trained. The food was lovely. Our favourite was the rice balls. I’m vegetarian and everything had so much flavour and was beautifully presented.

Service was slow. Didn’t tell us sourdough costed extra when reading us choices of bread. Food was unsatisfactory, lack of seasoning. Lack of vegan options. Expensive for what it is. Small portions.

Not greeted with a friendly face or tone. Food was ok but I believe that when eating out that all factors should be considered. The toilets were dirty and same sex toilets which I didn’t feel comfortable with at all. I won’t be returning ....
