I just want to share my story for anyone considering working here. No doubt, the surrounding scenery is gorgeous and it has the potential to be a great work place. However, I found myself in a borderline toxic workplace- walking on eggshells to put it nicely. I have worked in several countries and workplaces and this was by far the worst experience. Some examples, I was not give training and then repeatedly yelled at for not knowing where things were, sometimes in front of customers. I asked a question about the location of something on my 2nd day of work and was told that my eyes obviously don't work (to summarize in nice words). Anything that went wrong was always blamed on one of the employees in a way to embarass them rather than to let them learn, the furthest from an encouraging and learning workplace. In addition to this, rooms (ie bathrooms) were often not cleaned in between customers, customers would routinely arrive having pre-booked and there would be no record of it or no room ready, and the treatment of customers was hit and miss-depending on the mood of the owner (like it was for the workers). Further to that, I was payed by cheque which was rejected at the time of deposit. I spent the next 12 months in contact with the owner, who went between telling me it was my fault the cheques didn't work, saying that it was no longer her responsibility to pay me, and ignoring my messages and calls from the bank. The Scottish labour rights advisory (ACAS) advised me to take formal action and only then did she come up with the money to pay me, which was exactly 12 months after I completed the work. Just want to share my story here for others who are considering working here, as you may not be appreciated or paid for the work you do.

We booked ahead by phone on the day, and walked up from the village. The staff of 4 were struggling to get out plates of food to the diners already present, so we were offered comfy seats in the bar area. Our G+Ts and the single menu took a while to reach us, partly because the cook tripped and fell badly in the kitchen, but gamely carried on after being righted! The atmosphere is warm and informal and welcoming, and the food is tasty. £72.70 for 2, with a bottle of house red.

Unfortunately not the best... really don't like giving poor reviews but this wasn't great at all...all the tables bar one were covered in dirty dishes that had obviously been there many hours..we were the only people there so not exactly rushed off their feet...managed to get the one clear table...the worst weak watery hot chocolate ever...it was the ready made stuff in a jar.. congealed at the bottom of a small tea cup with boiling water..when I asked about milk was told it came with milk in it and that I just needed to stir it...it actually needed whisking to dissolve it ..not easy in a tea cup....I tried to explain that it could have milk in it along with hot water but young chap really just didn't get it..so I gave up trying to explain... sorry but won't be back😞

We had two wonderful evening meals here. This place doesn't pretend to be a high class restaurant and so has a limited bar. The menu changes every night and the quality of the food was amazing. We loved the relaxed atmosphere and really enjoyed all the food. Good sized portions which meant we didn't have space for dessert - more's the pity.

Rustic surroundings (inside and out) with delays for ordering. I think the groups before us had caused panic in the kitchen. Seemed like a family set-up with very little effort to make the diner ‘feel special’. In fact, we almost felt we were an inconvenience. Rating given predominently due to the quality of the food. Extremely over-cooked and dry….on the fringes of being inedible. As per a few other meals in the Highlands this week, we didn’t make a fuss or point this out as we really didn’t feel any changes would be made….however, you have been warned if you are looking to eat here.

Wow just back from a 1000 mile trip to the “Scottish tree hugging championships “ & blessed to stay at Ariundle centre & explore life with no TV, radio & limited Wi Fi a true detoxification from “normal” life. Kate the owner is a living legend & her work ethic & energy was inspirational… the food was sumptuous & special mention of plumb crumble must be made. The staff Sonia, Aaron & especially Fraser could not have been more helpful. The walls around the centre are trulymagical especially the “fairy” walk where we seen a out of this world bright light mistaking it for a fairy .. in reality a moth catchers lamp. The price was very reasonable and we hope to return next year. Thank you again Kate & staff you will always have a place in our 💜💜

A tale of 2 halves! I went in the morning and had a delicious coffe, beautifully served, in comfortable surroundings. I asked the waitress if they would be able to supply a take away that night; an elderly lady came out and said they could and gave me a list of items available. I came back later in the afternoon and gave her our requests. She explained that they had 2 groups in and she would confirm after they had ordered. I went back to collect and could not equate the number of containers with our order...3 of the starters had been put in the same container...fine. I just wanted to check everything was there, but the elderly lady became defensive and then aggressive, insisting on opening containers and shoving them in my face. I eventually got her to stop...she was unable to reseal the containers and just left them a crumpled mess. She said it would be 80 pounds then went to the till and told me it was 85; I queried it and said 'thats what I said didn't I' I told her she had said 80 and thats what she charged me. One of the starters was described as mackerel pate....it was a few slicers of smoked mackerel and a few slivers of hit smoked salmon. It was not pate, they were miserly portions and as smoked salmon uses farmed salmon, which is an awful ecological disaster for Scotland seas and lochs, I would never ever order it. I had fish pie, which was again a miserly portion, with no vegetables. The other mains, which did come with vegetables were deemed satisfactory. I am 70, and have had 2 careers, a policd officer, and looking after a large estate, which included cooking for, and serving earls dukes and a future Queen. My advice to these nice folk is only do what you can do properly, mark on the lids what is in the containers, and keep the elderly lady from front of house. She clearly had been overwhelmed by the 2 groups, as well as our small order, and her reaction was to become unpleasant to me The rest of the staff were charming, as were the surroundings; the coffee was great!

The elderly lady serving and preparing food looked as if she had been digging peat with her bare hands. Her fingernails were filthy. It was very off putting. The food was tasty but we felt slightly on the expensive side. Portion of juice was mean for the price. We went in for an evening "candle light" meal when we stayed here. Place has a slightly scruffy neglected feel but food was good. Had perfectly cooked salmon on couscous served by a friendly lady It was a big piece of salmon - would have cost £5 more in a pub so happy with that and was washed down with a lovely local ale.Breakfast was served by a lady (the owner?), who reminded me of Mrs Overall from Acorn Antiques for some reason. She asked whether we wanted full or continental breakfast. Continental arrived - it was slabs of cooked ham, cheddar cheese chunks, brown toast, hard boiled egg and butter/jam. Not sure what I should have expected but it seemed a little odd. I'm more of a cereal, toast, orange juice sort of person myself! But hey ho, not bad and coffee was good. Most odd was that while eating breakfast a man (owner?) came in and started climbing a metal ladder in the corner. I thought he was doing maintenance but turned out he was accessing his "office" - a platform over the edge of the restaurant. He sat at a desk with a computer a short away from the totally unsecured edge of his platform.I expected Basil Fawlty to walk in next.

Had a great late lunch here today. Very warm and friendly service, a little slow but perhaps they staff up at meal times (we arrived at 2pm). Food was tasty and reasonably priced. They even put a candle in hubby's birthday scone which was a lovely touch!

I'm a local and I have been here a lot. This is the best cafe i've ever been to. Lovely and clean, and welcoming staff. Not to mention the delicious food at a great price. I definitely recommend it. I have read some of the bad reviews and I was disgusted with them as they were all wrong. You should definitely go. Also lovely children's area outside. Beautiful flowers like rhodedendrons and lovely scent. Service is quick and in summer outside a lovely sound of dead grass swaying in the wind-lush.

What a pleasure to visit this unique place again. We came last year and were looking forward to revisiting. We were not disappointed. A wonderfully warm welcome. Delicious scones and jam and bread pudding that rekindled fond memories for my husband. The extra dimension is a craft shop selling knitted goods, art work and 100% Shetland knitting wool from their own flock. On a wet, blustery day it was a real treat.

Stayed nearby in our motorhome and saw this gorgeous wee place so phoned up to see if we could come for dinner (Just wanted to check as it was a Sunday evening in late December) and was pleasantly surprised when it was open. We sat at a cosy, candlelit table, with a roaring fire which was lovely. Service was great, lovely to chat to the owner. Food was very tasty, home cooked, and reasonable prices. Could imagine this would be great to stop off for coffee and cake after a walk too. Thank you!

Many visits now to this hidden Gem in the beautiful oak woods. We stayed in the bunkhouse which is modern, clean, comfortable, warm and cosy and should hardly be known as a Bunkhouse! We had the choice of making our own meals in the well equipped kitchen/dining room at the Bunkhouse but opted for Kate’s wonderful porridge and her home made bread and marmalade for breakfast and enjoyed a fabulous home cooked 3 courses with wine in the evening. I would thoroughly recommend the Venison which was tender and delicious followed by a whisky flavoured parfait!

The staff are extremely friendly, the surroundings superb, and the meal was fantastic. I'm vegetarian and it's quite literally one of the best dinners I've ever had at a restaurant. I'll certainly be back next time I'm up in Strontian.

A recommander absolument.

The staff here were perfectly lovely but clueless about how to serve their customers. You could not be sure whether things were just taking some time, or whether they were never ever going to happen. Both were equally likely. I thought I was going to grow old and die before I got out of there. There was one lady of a certain age who kept things together, just about, but apart from that ......

The Fish and Chip Shop is in our experience is without a doubt the BEST IN CAITHNESS AND SUTHERLAND! The fish was white and flakes. fried in beautiful crispy batter and the chips were perfect. We have experienced other Chip Shops in Wick,Thurso and Helmsdale, plus Mobile Chip Vans in Lybsterand Dunbeath and this has been the best so far too. We travelled around 30 miles to eat here and would do so again. THANK YOU.
