I haven't visited this hotel, as I booked 2 rooms for December, paying the required deposit. Unfortunately, travel plans have changed and despite emails, telephone calls and messages on Facebook, I am still waiting for my deposit to be returned to me. As per thier terms, full refund if cancelled within the time specified. As I have cancelled giving nearly 3 months notice there is no reason why they should not return the deposit. I was going to re-book when our travel plans have been confirmed, but definitely not now. Atrocious customer service.

I returned to the Argyll in 2024 having been several times before. Unfortunately it was disappointing, not the lively hostelry it has been in the past. I was looking forward to the range of cask ales that had previously been served but there were none, just a paper towel carelessly stuck to one beer pump. I ordered a meal which was tasty and well presented. The few customers left so i did also and went to one of the other pubs which was lively, served two real ales and had live music. I shall not return to the Argyll.

Stayed for 1 night with friends on way around NC500. First impressions were not great, hotel does need some TLC but the staff Connor and Logan were exceptional, even set us up in a separate bar to watch the football that night, outstanding guys and for that reason I would definitely go back to the hotel just to meet up with them again. A credit to the place. Food was also good, the bar area is traditional and cosy and busy all night. Don't be put off by other reviews, it's what you make of it yourself, the guys at the Argyll will look after you well.

Outside appearance of hotel and care of public areas (reception, stairs, carpark etc) would be scored as a 0 - dirty, uncared for and a health hazard (old mattresses piled on fire escape and flat roof). We would have turned round and walked back out except everywhere else was full and we’d paid in advance. Room was a bit tired with stains on carpet and comfy chairs, but bed was very comfy with very clean cotton bedding. Clean, fluffy bath towels too. On the top floor and the view from 2 large windows of the loch was amazing! Breakfast was acceptable but not great. Staff were lovely. If you can close your eyes to the public areas of the hotel and just gaze at the view and want a good nights sleep you’ll be fine!

Very friendly helpful landlord who has recently taken on this lovely local pub and hotel . He acknowledged that it need done serious investment to improve its slightly tatty run down feel but, that said , the rooms we’re comfortable and everything worked. The bar is packed on a Saturday night which meant a slightly noisy night with revellers spilling out and partying on the street til turf early hours

We were advised this restaurant/hotel is under new ownership. We were only visiting for food. We managed to get a table on arrival. It's a very average environment and service is poor sadly. Only one girl working the bar. There's no table service which isn't a problem. However things need improved this being the case. The menu didn't have a lot of choice really. No fish other than scampie in a fishing village, no macaroni etc. The chilli was served with indian yellow basmati rice which was absolutely bizarre, it should be serve with white long grain rice. We ordered scampie and a steak pie. Scampie was £13.50 and Steak pie more. Portions were very small for that price, hardly any chips at all. I'm not a big eater and was still hungry after I finished mine which never happens. Food tasted nice, no complaints at all re the flavor and quality of cooking. Another annoying problem was the lack of service/common sense. We, along with other tables were served our food, however no cutlery or salt n pepper etc on the table. We had to wait for cutlery to be brought AFTER we received our food. We asked for salt, vinegar and ketchup. We were given 2 TINY satchets of salt🤷🏼♀️ Thankfully I had spare satchets in my bag, we were also not given the sauce. Same thing happened to the table next to us, food came and they had to wait for their cutlery. WHY don't you give the cutlery and condiments in little baskets when people order at the bar, that way when the food comes people can eat rather than wait. Also let's the person stay behind the bar. Same thing with pudding, you're passing the kitchen why not bring the cutlery? 🤷🏼♀️ When paying £13.50 for a sit down meal I don't expect to be given tiny salt sachets you get at a MCDONALD'S, takeaway yes, dining at a table......no. Salt is not expensive! Makes it feel tacky. When sitting at a dining table you should be given salt in a proper salt shaker at the least, especially when paying these prices. This place could be much better if some common sense was shown. The thing that let it down was the large tables of drinking locals who were pretty drunk and loud at 7.30pm. It's a shame, could be so much better as the fireplace sets a nice atmosphere which was spoiled by drunk locals. We didn't stay for drinks due to this, we just ate and left. I think a few tweaks made could really change this place for the better. Prices are OK if the portions matched the prices. It's not a classy or upmarket establishment, more a place to drink for the locals so the portions and service need to be improved to lure people back.

This hotel needs a complete gut out and rebuild. There is a pervading odour of stale smoke from years of visitors. An attempt has been made too redecorate but it is just cosmetic. The walls are paper thin, snoring very audible, and people spilling out into that street from the bar. Smoke drifts up to open windows in the bedrooms. Breakfast is in a different hotel on the seafront. I didn’t eat there, but was alarmed to see the barman, no hands washed, opening a frozen pizza from packaging and putting it in an oven under the bar. The nightly rate was ridiculous considering the state of the place. On the plus side, the bed was comfortable and the linen fresh. I couldn’t wait to depart. Advice….. don’t book this hotel.

Although they're not taking bookings, and won't accept randoms off the street ahead of their own in-house guests, *at the moment*, they will try and accommodate you if you're in early enough and having a drink or two before dinner. The food was nicely presented. I opted merely for a couple of share plates which came with a fresh basic wee salad, and I ordered a side of chips (because I'd managed to avoid them for more than a week.... elsewhere... thank goodness). Good choice, the haggis bons bons were tasty, the mushroom tart... similarly, and the chips were perfectly cooked, and came with both chunkies and littlies... the way I like them. Hubby was impressed with his salmon entree and his steak pie with well-cooked (barely, so still al dente, the way he likes them) vegetables. Only drawback... the weather was appallingly cold and wet, and no-one lit the fire, which would have been nice. To a wo/(man) everyone was still in their outdoor clothes, huddling inside.

Myself and my husband dined here on a Saturday night in November with very little choice available in the town due to closures. The whole experience was very similar to your local Spoons'. Nice fireplace gave it a cosy atmosphere. After moving to 2 different tables due to sticky drinks marks we settled down in the corner. Not too busy, maybe 3 other tables and some drinking bar locals. Handed some lovely sticky menus you start to contemplate about staying in the place but we persevered. Good choice on the menu. I had scampi, hubby had burger. No table service so you order and pay at the bar as you go along. Food was surprisingly very tasty and good portion sizes! Waitresses skills were questionable taking plates before we had both finished. The barman however was very friendly and had a nice conversation or two with my husband. Overall it wasn't a great experience but also not a terrible one. OK service, OK food, just average. Better than grabbing a takeaway. Clean the tables and menus and it would have gained an extra star!

The bar area was heaving, no social distancing evident. Luckily we were shown to a table in the back dinning area. You order and pay at the bar. The menu has some interesting dishes, to suit all food types. I went for the burger, as all the fish dishes had sold out. Our food arrived quickly, it was presented nicely and was steaming hot. Strangely my burger was served on the smallest side plate I’d ever seen, which made it impossible to manoeuvre. That said the food was tasty. This is basic pub grub, plain and simple. The bar ordering is a nightmare as everybody has to congregate in a small area where Covid restrictions are non existent, while the servers look-on; they could table service and make everybody feel safer.

Ate there on a busy Friday night. Food OK, nothing special, nothing bad. Staff friendly and helpful if somewhat overrun. What was disappointing was that saw no effort around COVID protocols, menus just handed from one person to another and whilst tables were cleared they certainly weren’t cleaned between guests. Loads of people queuing at bar spilled out into main area. Didn’t feel overly comfortable and got out ASAP which is unlike most of the places we have visited.

The smoked salmon was lovely but very small amount but unaccompanied by the mull cheese oat cakes . Instead it was served with wilted rocket and 6 capers as well as a very small brown roll which had been in a microwave too long and was inedible. We also had a very disagreeable chicken pie! Only reason this review is not in terrible category is that the waitress was pleasant and it was blatantly not her fault. Won't be back. Chef should be ashamed.

Ate here on a Friday night after a long journey and saw that the bar was quite full so asked to sit in the restaurant. This seemed to be an inconvenience to the staff (even though another group was already in there) and one of them seemed to repeatedly explain how little the room is used and why, as if trying to convince us to move. The menu also makes several mention of specials but there are none. However, the food we had was actually reasonable - a good-size cheeseburger and a hearty chicken and skirlie dish - but we'd long since been disillusioned by the awkward overall experience.

Ate here around 6.30 on Friday 23rd June 2017. Be aware that although the holiday season has yet to hit peak, the Argyll was very busy! However we were fortunate to get a table in the lounge bar and both wait and bar staff were friendly and helpful. There's wifi too. Would heartily recommend.

Just a a drink here. Barmen friendly, it was very quiet, but a Sunday night at the end of school holidays, so probably quiet everywhere. We didn't mind, was nice and relaxing. Toilets could do with a makeover, very dated, as was the bar furniture.

Rooms were not sound proof, felt the walls were nothing more than plywood. we could hear people talking from next room, the floor boards creaking really loudly upstairs. Room was advertised w private bathroom but turns out not en suite, have to cross hallway to get there. No central hallway ,only one portable heater. Paid £105 for one night ,no breakfast included. I guess the price is driven by market demand ( good Friday). At this price , many other hotels in Scotland would have been much much better.

My boyfriend and I stayed two nights in this hotel couple of days ago. The view from our room was amazing; it was confortable warm weather inside, nice bed; hotel very close to the ferry and bus station (5 mins by walk max). We tried food one night in the downstairs restaurant and was absolutely not too bad!! Staff very kind and helpful. Unfortunately I have to say what I didn't enjoy as well: 1) a big NO to the toilet. Small, weak water pressure in the shower, and a bit dirty. 2) when we came back after all day out we find out they clean our room (even if we didn't ask to) and that's fine...but I left some of my teabags (I brought from home) in a glass and somebody bin them. 3) there are not a lot of wall socket in the room.

My husband and I were excited to reach Ullapool on New Year's Day on our motorhome tour of Scotland. The town was very closed up - understandably - and only a few restaurants and pubs were open.We tried two but were turned away as one had run out of food and the other was running a gig that required tickets - so we ended up at the Argyll. The bar is actually quite welcoming with a log fire - but the man behind the bar wasn't.We asked about food and were told there was nothing till 6.00pm - this was at 5.00pm. The barman was disinterested in assisting us and then I suggested we have a cup of tea and wait for an hour. He didn't appear to be too pleased at this. There was zero welcome on his part and we felt he would rather we leave than bother him further, but we decided to persevere as so few places were open.My husband ordered some tea and suggested a tab and the barman replied "You pay as you go here". No social graces whatsoever. We then waited until 5.55pm to place a food order, but he refused to accept it and told us to come back at 6.00pm. He could have taken our food order and passed it through to the kitchen at 6.00pm, but no, that was too much trouble. My husband tried to engage him in some way, but it was an uphill struggle and he could barely make eye contact or crack a smile. When the food arrived it was acceptable, although slightly over-priced in my opinion.I cleared my own tea things and my own plates, as the barman and his assistant seemed oblivious to customers.I read other reviews while sitting in the pub and lots of other people have complained about this barman. He's really not cut out for customer interaction and service so don't expect any kind of welcome or pleasantaries from him! Will not be visiting this establishment again.

The Argyll Hotel has a cosy lounge bar, open to non residents. It was very quiet when we went for dinner but it was at the quietest time of year, in November. The dining area is warm and has a welcoming atmosphere. Service was prompt and friendly. We ordered vegetarian sausages and a vegetarian curry. The sausage meal was very good - 3 large vegetarian sausages served in a large Yorkshire pudding with mashed potatoes, vegetables and gravy. I would have this again. The curry meal was very small and we were disappointed with the value of this. Overall the prices were reasonable. we would return and something other than the small curry.

This is a good place for a cosy drink but offering streetside tables outside if there is some sun. There is sometimes a quiz on Thursday nights and on some nights live music and it's a popular watering hole. Bar staff can be offhand as we popped in to reserve our table in the afternoon for a Thursday night as we were a party of 7 but when we arrived there was no reservation. The bar manager did a great job of getting us a space as one punter moved tables. The food is standard pub grub but the fish and chips and fish pie are particularly good. They will also size up starters such as fish cakes which are served with a freshly made salsa. Food is ordered and paid for at the bar and bought to your table when prepared.

The Argyll is probably the coziest lounge bar in Ullapool. Quite old fashioned in its decor, but cozy nevertheless, a good place for an evening drink. The food is decent, and at a reasonable price as well.

After wandering around Ullapool looking for a suitable place to eat accompanied by our dog, we took the advice of a passing local and tried the Argyll Hotel. The tables in the bar area were ideal for our needs and our dog settled down comfortably whilst we ate standard, but tasty, highland fare. A good choice and less expensive than some others in town.

Only dropped into The Argyll for a pint of the local ale and thought the bar area was your typical quiet Scottish bar. Colourful locals who were up for a laugh and a chat, and despite the Barman's gruff exterior, he was polite and no request was too small. Nice place, great local feel.Didn't order any food, but menu looked quite good.

Stayed for one night doing the NC500. The car park is at rear of hotel and is a dump. The view from room was onto a wall and the gutters were full of weeds. Room badly decorated, dated, had a step in the middle of room, light switch on wall was broken, TV remote control was cellotaped together, bathroom was dated. No staff when we got up in morning, doors were locked and left without breakfast.

Went for supper. We dined in the pub lounge rather than the restaurant. It felt nice and homely. Food was good pub grub. We were a little surprised that they didn't have much fish on the menu, especially considering Ullapool and West Coast in particular are famous for fresh fish. Notwithstanding, we were well attended and the it was great, family friendly atmosphere in the pub. It was just what the doctor ordered.

Consigliato.

Visited with friends on Sunday. We called in for a drink and snack at 1 pm. No customers in the bars and no staff anywhere. When the barman did arrive his welcome was ''what do you want''?.When I told him he said abruptly ''Menus on the tables and come to the bar to order food and drinks !!'' We sat down, did not order and then left because of his attitude.

We all had Sunday lunch (£22), service was good and waitress was friendly. However the Roast dinner was lukewarm, the beef was far from tender and the Yorkshire pud was clearly reheated and very greasy. The bar wasn’t able to provide many of the beers/lagers on tap. Altogether a very disappointing visit. We were here last year and I still remember The Venison I had. Clearly new management/chef. Definitely give it a miss.

No food on offer other than crisps, ice cream and a meagre offering of cake, shocked as we were there for a 1pm show and had travelled over an hour thinking we would be fine for lunch at the theatre. Staff were fine, no hint of getting things done in a timely fashion and not much interaction with customers. Decor is depressing, such a big space makes it cold and echoey. Just no atmosphere whatsoever. Very disappointed and won't be back.

A lovely restaurant with nice food and lovely helpful staff. A spacious restaurant with great views. On offer was fish and chips, macaroni cheese, steak and mushroom pie, beef and haggis olives.

Avoid this place . Poorly cooked frozen fish and staff who see you as sn inconvenience. They add a 10% service charge and offer rubbish service.
