Always fresh and simply the best

Me and my husband got food poisoning this Friday after sharing a cod and chips - have tried to contact Argus privately to let them know in case they have gotten a bad batch of fish, unfortunately couldn't reach them so posting it here instead. We have been eating from here for 5+ years and never had a problem before, this experience however has put us off and, unlike our Friday night takeaway, we won't be making a reappearance.

Decent chips but was absolutely STUNNED by the price!! £5.20 for a large chips is MAD. I have never seen a large chips so expensive and really couldn’t believe it. felt like daylight robbery.

Best fish and chips, the haddock is always especially good and the curry sauce is the tastiest curry sauce I've ever had from a fish and chip restaurant. Very generous sizes.

Lovely shop have gone here for Years really good food the only problem is that the small portion is too big. Shop has been in Family for Years passed down from Mother to Son.

Superb fish and chips, best I've had in Bristol. Service great it's worth the half-hour drive. I'm not the only one other people drive out of the way to get fish and chips there. Keep up the good work.

My only problem and the reason for four stars, I hate skin on my cod.

My first time today. Ordered cod and chips the portion was massive but very tasty.

It is still a great fish & chip shop. £10.35 for a normal cod & chips is that pricey? The only negative is that the fish was smaller than our local. (Star Bar) Owner was very friendly and the people before and after were obviously regulars. Food was good and it was very clean.

This is a very popular chippy for a reason. The fish is cooked fresh for you, and the portions are very generous! My favourite!

Ordered gravy and chips from here today to take home for lunch. The chips were under cooked and tasted chewy, cold and there wasn't enough gravy. It was dry and unappetising. The lady serving us came out the back to serve us with a mouth full of food, so much so that her cheeks were full and she couldn't speak. I have always known Argus to be expensive for the size of the portions, but I didn't mind as the quality was always very good and the food hot, but Im afraid after 30 years I won't be going again. They should be ashamed off the food they serve up, My home made chips are much better and cheaper. Businesses like this shouldn't be able to get away with it

Waited ages in here tonight for a cod, chips and mushy peas. Meant to be a good chip shop! Really? I pulled six bones from my cod before I gave up and was absolutely put off from eating anymore. No excuse for this nowadays. Someone not paying attention to detail. Won't return.

What can I say about the Kat's of Bristol? They've always been the best F&C shop in the area. Home grown resume, home grown tome. Just caught them and last orders and totally cool... about me swaying in like an Andrea Dunbar... ok more of Peter Cushing wth a moist handshake with that famous dude from The Witchfinder General... what's his name again??? Pretty sure the director was called M Reeves. But I'm sure the producer was little Baby Blue from Gone with the Wind..... I think I'm rambling here. I have R&M on in the background.,. And eating the chips as I write with greasy fingers on my phone..... oh the horror, the horror...I need to write a poem here I 🤔 more later

Not too bad, people rave about it but found the fish to be slightly undercooked and the battar very soggy.

Had a fishcake wow was so bad and not cheap it's was a supermarket bought one and it was worse fishcake I've ever had won't be going there again used to be so nice years ago

Is the food quality the best in the area - yes. Will you get what you pay for - dubious. Didn't update my review before but it happened again. £9 for a tiny piece of haddock after a 45 minutes wait with no chips, last time paid for 3 and got 2 meals, only noticed when I got home. Just what you want is to be going hungry when you got takeaway for the convenience. I don't think it's deliberate missing food, they're just not staffed enough and gassing. The huge wait times are staffing I assume - 15 minute wait to order (from being second in queue), then 30 mins to cook a 4 inch bit of fish. The tiny portions are, in fairness, normal for the south. A small in the north is bigger than a large here for less money. Don't go here at peak times and carefully watch or check your order before leaving is my advice. Unless you want a fish in a box with no chips.

We love our local chippy. Lovely chips and crunchy batter and nice firm fish. The ladies there are lovely and friendly and efficient. We always get their haddock social and like their scampi and battered sausages too.

Take out | Other | £1–10 Very good food I had been craving some good fish and chips for a while and since I was hangover I decided to pop in for the first time and they did not disappoint!! I’m full from a normal cod and chips, one thing that would be a nice addition to the shop is to have a option that comes with disposable cutlery because the smell was killing me in my way home but I recommend 10/10

A 'normal' portion of chips filled the box, and the fantastic mushy peas were a proper sized portion (not the mere garnish you often see these days). All freshly cooked. Entertained while waiting with friendly chat. A local customer came in and was greeted by name. Shame I was only passing through the area, or I'd be in there all the time!

Have been using this fish and chip shop for many years and have never had cause to complain but I don't know what happened on Saturday 05/08/2023 but all I can say is Bloody awful, soggy chips full of little hard bits and the quality of the fish was terrible Over cooked batter with the thinnest bit of cod possible inside and to make matters worse I for some reason had a soggy battered sausage stuck to the bottom of my fish, I really hope this is a one off

It was so fantastic, the tall blonde boy did say he wanted to molest me and I did get frightened, but apart from that it was very good

Everything soggy and when I got home I realised there was missing items. I had to buy sausages from another place that was closer to home. So our food was then cold by the time we could eat. My fault thinking I’d try a new place than to our usual chippy, but I won’t be returning

First time we visited and it was excellent.

Wow. Best fish & chips and battered sausage I’ve had in a while. The hamburger with a slice of cheese was very tasty too. Make sure you have someone to share with as the portion size is quite large.

Surprise. Actually just take away. But because we were traveling in the car, we were allowed to eat on site as an exception. The portions are huge. Fish and chips. No alcohol. The boss was a good and very nice person to talk to. Thank you very much

Nice friendly staff. Food is good. The cod we had once the meat wasn't white in colour which is a shame. Hopefully it was a odd one out.

Some chip shops you only go to when you're "battered" but with the Argus, "cod" are they wrong. I'd "plaice" this chip shop as the "sole" one worth visiting nearby. If you've "haddock" 'nuff of naff posh nosh then "fried" tell you to "pollocck" your socks and "skate" on down to Argus Fish shop "tuna" ite. I'd "hake" to "sea" you miss out! Fish.

Had a friend visiting from Germany and she had never had English fish & chips so obviously I had to hunt down somewhere that would leave an impression. A Google search sent us to these guys! I told them why we were there and they recommended the meal she should order. The portions were huge! I ordinarily don't manage to eat a whole portion of chips but these had me hooked 🤣 I ate them all in one sitting 🤦

This was my first fish and chips experience ever since I have stepped foot in the UK. Their servings are great for the price, the chips with salt and vinegar are mouth-watering—not too dry and not too oily. As for the fish, the batter tastes like home. I would suggest ordering the haddock fish and chips with curry sauce. It's just sad they don't deliver, but the queue is worth the wait.

Back in Bristol from Aus, for the first time in 3 years. This was our choice to get fish and chips and glad we did. The haddock was freshly cooked and a good thickness of batter I.e. not too thick. Very generous with the chips, I had small and could not finish. All good for us.

Check the photos and make your own mind up - just for the record the photos were taken before trying the food the fish / Cod was just pulled apart to show what looks like old unused from lunch hour then re-fried at 5pm when I ordered - if you look close at the chips they have black bits caked onto them and no condiments were added this is straight from the fryer to the box - the curry sauce was obviously over filled before the lid was put on and was definitely NOT chip shop curry ( powdery and not a nice flavor ) paying £9.85 for standard Cod & Chips and ending up with this is awful and if I lived closer to the shop I would have taken it back. There loss.

It was great in my teens and it's still great know. Great food and still reasonable prices.

Purchased a cod and chips here which was well cooked and very enjoyable .Purchased four cod and chips here about a fortnight later. The quality could not have been more different. The cod was over battered, over cooked and dry. Chips were just about average .Find it hard to understand how the quality of a similar meal purchased from the same shop could be so different. Sadly very disappointed..

regularly get fish and chips here, battered fish is nice and crispy without being a rock and the chips are pretty decent too, great portion sizes, large fish is large, and the menu is varied. can get other fish than just cod or haddock 👍

Ok but abit over rated only reason I go to this shop if my regular chip shop on Parson street is closed after 2 pm this place open ALL DAY this is the only advantage this chip shop has over most others like I say not the worst I've had but by no means not the best as in my option the best chip shop I've been to is the one opposite Parson street school on Parson street Bedminster

The chips were cooked to perfection, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Huge portion, great value, friendly service. Highly recommended.

Really tasty authentic British food and Bristolian hospitality. I had cod and chips and ate all of it. The shop made curry sauce is top notch, similar to Irish curry sauce. All fish lots come with a wedge of lemon. Make sure you talk to the owner, he has loads of stories to tell and will debate whether a crocodile is bigger than an aligator ha ha 🐊

Just had a haddock and chips special for a very reasonable £6.50 from here, 10/10, freshly cooked, large portion, crispy chips, nice wedge of 🍋, everything as it should be 🙂, I will definitely be going back v.soon.

Normally can't complain.. But sometimes the chips could do with a couple of minutes more just to crisp up the outside.

Really good - Chips were excellent and the curry sauce was really flavourful! And the "large" really is large.

Cracking Fish and Chips, freshly cooked and good sized portion. Staff friendly and obviously know their regular customers. On street parking only, but do take telephone orders.

Not impressed paid extra for the gravy on my chips but served up in a cardboard box my daughter almost chocked on the cardboard because it had stuck to the bottom of her chips by the time we got home with it most of the gravy soaked into the cardboard this chippy has really gone down hill they won’t even answer the telephone to take an order from you bloody joke will be last time I buy from here

Best fish and chips I've ever had!

I’ve tried a lot of chippies in Bristol and this is by far my favourite. The food is always fresh, nicely cooked and tasty. The service is super friendly and they have items on the board that other chip shops just don’t have. I travel across Bristol to have them as they’re so good and their curry sauce is the best I’ve had anywhere!

Great always get a fantastic meal. And great service.
