Best fish and chips in years. Great friendly staff

Sadly, we had to return two lots of fish and chips due to the shocking pieces of fish we were served. Grey, undercooked and just a mush of yellow non crispy batter. Bitterly disappointed. There was an offer of a replacement but we decided to have a refund. Sad to say but this chippie has lost it's way recently and what used to be the go to fish and chip shop has now lost more custom.

I love their Chips, Fish is not too greasy and the batter just right. Friendly and the portions are just right, no wastage. It's a pity they are only open 1/2 the week.

Great fish and chips and contrary to what Google have been saying they are open all day Thursday Friday and Ssturday.

Fish was so dry think it most have been cooked yesterday .Never had any complaints before very disappointing

My partner and I, had fish and chips, the batter and fish was dry, tough and had clearly been cooked a long time before it was served to us. Very disappointed.

Great chips, love the lil crispy bits. Curry sauce was the best I've had in years. Great service and perfect balance between clean and tasty. Will be back soon

Don't you just love it when you are served the wrong thing, worse still, something you dont particularly like, you phone up to mention the mistake, and they argue, insisting you were wrong. Paid £16, for two small haddock and a small Fries and mushy peas, only to find when I get to the sea front to enjoy my meal, I've been served cod. The fact that cod is cheaper is one thing, but the point is, I don't even like cod.....at all so know how it tastes, and also it wasfull of bones, and haddock isn't. So we ring to mention it, expecting at least a sorry or maybe a promise of some recompense perhaps, but are greeted with, "it was definitely haddock, as it came out if the haddock drawer". Ever considered the "drawer loading person" got it wrong. Cod is nothing like Haddock, which is why I don't eat it!!

Just had the OAP fish and chips disgusting I have seen bigger sausage than this fish really dissatisfied will not be going there again And I have used this chippy for years

visited whilst staying in town and didnt want to miss out on our Friday Chippy tea as well as having chippy chips by the sea (river) we ordered 2 lots of cod bites which came with chips as well as a sausage and chips. all three were plentiful portions and was hot. the fish tasted fresh and was covered in light and crispy batter. would be nice to have a proper fork with the meals and not just a chip fork as well as charging 15p for a paper bag is a little steep when the tax is only on plastic over all it didnt spoil the meal and it was very enjoyable

Staying in portishead for a few days,have eaten here before but tonight's was awful,really expensive to start and chips went in the bin,tasteless cold and seemed to be scraps how they thought they were worth the 3.50 price I don't know, miserable older lady making food.Never again.

Went for Thursday night fish and chips and my husband a burger. Sadly Portion was small and the fish batter was greasy and not at all tasty. My husband said next time he would go to MacDonalds instead. Not cheap and certainly not worth the amount paid.

Ok but not great. Food a bit greasy even for fish & chips but nice enough. Portions on the small side. The shop itself is unwelcoming and feels like it's closing down. 3 things I asked for not available/discontinued but not reflected on the menu. Staff seemed harassed and stressed which added to the feeling that they didn't really want to be open. Wouldn't recommend it but if you do end up there the food is ok.

No regular haddock available today. Chips very dry & only warm, lots of bits. Web site says closed but found to be open. Wrb site desperately needs to be updated.

Best fish and chips on the high Street but never have the smaller size of haddock so its then becomes an expensive meal.

Always buy haddock but they never do the small haddock. Only the large haddock . Food always fresh .

Don not ask for gluten-free…older lady there doesn’t agree with it…said environmental health ppl told her the high temperature kills gluten off and is then safe too eat!!! will not NOT trust this chip shop again due too this issue! I asked what would she do in the case of a peanut allergy and she wasn’t very happy and said oh we are constantly getting asked all this stuff. The lack of knowledge was quite honestly a total disgrace and we will not go there again

I live in Clevedon and we have a great fish and chip shop called the Clevedon Fish Bar. A small chips ( about 450g of chips) is £1.60 A regular chips (about 575g) is £2.20. Went in to Appleby's (never again) looked at the board Chips £2.20. Thought great same price as my local chippie. Well sort of! Handed over £2.20 got a SMALL chips!!! Queried it just in case they have charged me wrong but Noooo! Their SMALL chips is £2.20 the regular is £3.00. Just to check to see if they were using some new special TARDIS type box where they can fit loads of chips into a small space I popped them on the kitchen scales when I got home. No, not a special TARDIS type box, just 450g of chips same as my local chip shop who charges £1.60 for that amount of chips. Appleby's The Dieter's Chip Shop where the small portions will keep you in trim :)

I always feel a bit guilty giving a place a less than perfect review, particularly in these (nearly) post pandemic times, but we were a little disappointed in our fish and chips. The fish was quite greasy and the chips (we had one portion between two as we'd heard you get huge portions) turned out to be barely enough for two (but perhaps that's our problem). It seemed a little chaotic in there and the staff gave the impression of being inexperienced. The till had broken (not their fault), but it seemed to throw them off kilter. Overall, just an OK experience, not the 'great' we had been led to believe

Excited to have our chip Friday with my work colleges only to find a handful of chips in each box totally disappointed. When I rang to complain they just hung up on me. customer service is appalling and shameful.

I was absolutely appalled by the service I received at this establishment. The woman behind the counter was very huffy and puffy and didn't allow me time to think about my order pressuring me to order the wrong thing . When I got my order back to my office I was horrified to the see dismal portion of chips in the box's. I actually counted the amount the chips in my box and too my disbelief I had 21 and vast majority were under cooked. When I rang to complain the huffy and puffy woman just hang up. Needless to say I wouldn't advise anyone use them again. Instead of putting my money into local business I should of spent my money in one of the soulless multi million pound takeaway corporations (Mcdonalds or Subway) Portishead have too offer. At least I would of had pleasant service.

I visited on Saturday 13 March. Treating myself and my friend to fish and chips to celebrate some work we had completed. A meal we looked forward to suddenly turned so(I am in her bubble as she has chronic mental health issues). I queued inside whilst my friend waited outside as there were a lot of customers inside, when our food was ready to go both went in to collect as there was no one else in the shop. The young lady behind the counter asked if we wanted salt and vinegar and before we could answer a older lady from behind the fish counter shouted aggressively to my friend ‘where’s your mask’ we were both shocked. I was wearing a mask, my friend was not as she is exempt and wearing a mask is a trigger for her PTSD. My friend responded ‘I’m exempt but did you need to ask in such an aggressive manor’ and the lady did not reply. No apology or anything. It was appalling to see such bad treatment of a customer and the clear assumption which was made of her and why she wasn’t wearing a mask. Considering the lady behind the counter wasn’t wearing a mask either? This did not set a very good example for the young girls working there and I suggest some education for staff on good customer service, manors and how to approach people not wearing masks. A lot of those exempt suffer for anxiety and are already anxious they are going to be asked before they even enter a shop and to then have someone speak to them in such a awful way can really trigger a drop in their mood. I saw my friend go from being super happy and excited to angry and upset in a matter of seconds the way she was treated was not ok. I hope no one else ever has to experience this.

The last time I had fish & chips from here was so good . Unforgettable this time the batter was all soggy and not cooked enough and unfortunately my chips was cold . A bit sad really was looking forward to them

Portions are shocking, large is barely a handful and curry sauce runny as water. Used to be good but gone to pot very quickly.

It was an average fish and chip shop I won't say it was brilliant

My wife and I had had f&c from here before, so were excited to return again on Tues 21 Aug. We had to wait for fresh portions to cook and then headed along the coast for a picnic lunch. Suzie's fish was OK. Not great, just OK. But mine was a soggy mess. The batter was soft to the touch and below the surface it was RAW. I struggled through half of it before consigning to a litter bin. If we hadn't already driven so far we would have returned it to the shop. We suspect that Suzie's fish was the last of the previous batch, and mine had not been cooked long enough. Sorry, but you are only as good as your last serving and we will not risk a return visit. I felt sick all afternoon. A shocking experience.

Had a fish and chip lunch from here today and it was brilliant. Freshly cooked, lovely light gf batter and tasty chips.

Telephoned West Hill branch and asked to order, was told it was quiet so I could just pop along, I wanted 2 large cod so usually you need to wait, but on arrival the fish was cooked and ready.Once home and inboxes the smell was divine! Chips were chunky cut and crispy and hot! The fish was in such a light batter and huge! I could not eat all of mine it beat me! Fair play to these continuing to trade during COVID-19. Correct procedures in place and sensible attitude.Friendly staff and quick service.Will be back for sure, thankyou for being open!!

Yesterday Appleby's delivered meals to the Independent Retirement home I live in. These meals were free of charge. Cod and chips for everyone. The meals were very tasty. I don't normally eat fish and chips but I hope to be able to visit the shop once this pandemic is over.Great food.

I manage a retirement development in Portishead, I have 72 residents some of whom are frightened and worried about the situation at the moment. On Wednesday 25 March Kevin and Shaun delivered £270 worth of fish and chips completely free of charge........... We wont forget this and I hope if you are in Portishead you wont either when things get back to normal!!!Thank you Kevin, Shaun and all at Appleby's!!!!!!!

I don’t expert to call up to make an order and the woman huffed and puffed and told me it’s busy. Funnily enough being a Saturday it would be busy so if you can’t handle business then you shouldn’t be working your foul mouth there. Secondly to then be handed to a younger girl who decided to laugh down the phone. Disgusting customer service I’d never call you to place an order. I suggest some customer service management course. Failing that you shouldn’t even be working being so rude. Ya burgers are crap and dry like rubber anyway.

This is a very solid fish and chip shop. It could be the best in the area although there is not much competition!

Fish is poor flakes are very small you are buying tail end off cuts for a premium price.

Only bought a box of chips but they were yummy! Normally a good sign that all their food is good. Will try a full meal next time we are near.

Really great food! Fish (Cod) was very nice and battered well. Chips are nice but are with skin on so not traditional. Have been a few times before and have never had a bad meal.

This is a well kept clean and bright establishment with a varied menu. The staff are friendly and helpful the food is very good quality and tastes great. Parking nearby is not too difficult.

I like this Fish bar...it's generally not too busy after 7pm. Fish always had a nice crispy tasty batter and the chip are cooked to crispy, unlike many who leave them soft.

I went in to apple bees chip shop and I thought it was disgusting how the staff wear false nails and nail vanish when you work in a food company that is very unhygienic have they ever done food hygiene or safety before as I know full well working in a food industry you are not aloud nail varnish or false nails just in case it falls off into the food or customers orders please can you review this with your staff members as I will not be eating there if things haven’t changed with the food hygiene

Food was great, however gravy was like water and portions were rather small. Lovely staff and great product just more mad needed and thicker gravy. Will deffo return.

Ussually this place is really good for food so don't let this put you off atall, but after getting home and realising the young chap had charged me an extra £3.30 ontop of my meal according to the prices on their board i feel abit miffed, take your time and don't charge people more than needed just because you have a rush of customers, good food is worth the wait but not when it costs you even more than advertised. Food was lovely regardless.

But they never acknowledged me once when I walked in or when I was waiting in the end I would of wked out but promised my daughter chips. Man cooking was to busy talking to other people he knew in the queue then asking for my order.

29/12/2018 \I ordered Cod, chips and gravy this afternoon and to my horror, I watched the cook/server go into the back and put 1 t-spoon of Bisto Gravy granual's \(£1.00 PER TUB IN SUPERMARKETS - EVEN CHEAPER IN BULK) in a small tub, add hot water and have the cheek to charge me £1.30. Her response to my complaint was "I agree, but I just work here and all of the fish and chip shops do it". Which I know is not true. That is the last time they will ever get my custom.... DISGUSTED!!!!!!!!!

We ordered 20 portions of fish and chip for a church function. Staff were extremely helpful and 20 portions were available at the time ordered which were rated as excellent by all those who enjoyed them, with succulent cod in crisp batter, and freshly cooked chips. As an added bonus, they are packed in environmently friendly cardboard boxes which can be recycled. We were delighted by their friendly service.

Great place for picking up traditional fish and chips. They do a pensioner's version "OAP & Chips" which is quite sufficient for an adult of any age.
