Apothecary Bar & Plates in Edinburgh, City of

We booked this for valentines day and were really excited as the pictures looked good. The decor of the restaurant was nice. For starters I had the arranchini, which I love, but this one was SO tasteless, even after dousing it in salt and pepper. For our mains we ordered the pesto tagliatelle and the butternut squash risotto- again both really really tasteless.We could make the pesto pasta way better at home. We left feeling this was way overpriced for what we got, despite the presentation of it being really beautiful.

I went there with my wife and friends for some drinks and food. We all thought it was lovely - very nicely decor. The bar is a really nice place to sit and the restaurant is upstairs with great views of the Quartermile area. Good service for drinks, and the food was great too. I had mussels, and then the ravioli which was lovely.All in a very enjoyable evening and will come back.

I've been visiting friends of mine and we went to Apothecary as this place looks really nice from outside. Inside was OK but the food was really mediocre, nothing special at all. We've expected much more from upstairs Brasserie. My steak was medium well, instead of medium rare which I asked for. Salad was definitely not from fresh batch and was getting black and rotten. I told it to a waiter but he seems to ignore my opinion without any explanation and excuses. Too be fair I would never back there for dining at all. Drinks was okay and bartender was really cool and helpful. Maybe it's good place for locals and young students as they very loud but for us was just not enough good

Like everywhere else on a January Monday the restaurant was not busy but we were greeted warmly and we liked the set up of the dining room immediately. The service throughout was excellent, neither intrusive nor inefficient. The menu is short but interesting with surely something for everyone. In our party the starters were given particular praise, especially the smoked trout and the French onion soup. The main courses were very good in both quality and quantity and well presented. The wood pigeon was cooked to perfection as was the cod. The wine we chose from the list was not available but we were offered a more expensive alternative at no extra charge. We had not been in the area for many years and were impressed by the redevelopment in which the Apothecary looks very much at home.

Classic French ratatouille was French only from name, was not enough hot and bland. Totally disappointed

Had heard about the Apothecary from a friend and had lunch there yesterday with friends. Booking was easy: I had an immediate response to my email. The restaurant is modern and spacious, and they do the small things well: glasses, water jugs, ice containers. And the food doesn’t disappoint. As starters two of us had the chicken liver pâté with lightly toasted focaccia, pea shoots and pear chutney (delicious) and one had the mussels in a wine and cream sauce, which she polished off happily. I then had the chicken breast with an interesting and tasty black pudding and blueberry compôte and my friends had the cod and chips. We enjoyed our puddings: sticky toffee and panna cotta. The Sauvignon Blanc was good and modestly priced and was not offered to the man in our group to taste, which in my book is a definite plus! Service was pleasant altogether: attentive but unintrusive, and we didn’t feel rushed at all, though we sat and chatted for a long time. Altogether a find.

We had dinner as a couple on the first floor of this stylish new brasserie and thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. The warm welcome, the excellent service, the delicious food and the comfortable ambience all contributed to a most enjoyable evening. We will definitely go back and will have no hesitation in recommending it to our friends.

We went as a couple on a Saturday night in the Restaurant upstairs, very quiet however the food and service were Fab! Would recommend to other couples! Outlook was lovely too (Christmas Tree in square).

This is basically a rowdy student bar with a very young clientele. Not a place for locals. Much better places to go.

Average bar, drinks not great, did not bother with the food not to my taste. Very very young crowd, making lots of noise. Not a place for couples.

Three of us lunched to celebrate our friend's 86th birthday. We had previously been given very acceptable vouchers to entice us in, and as we live locally we want Apothecary to succeed. We'll even return without them (though always acceptable!) The ambience was relaxed which matched the decor, and the service was attentive and discreet. The food was simply delicious. Steak frites and fish and chips as freshly prepared as food can be. We loved hearing the hammering of our steaks being tenderised. A top up of tasty organic Pinot Grigio was immediately poured when a glass was accidentally knocked over. The highlight was an additional plate with fruit and cake and the words 'Happy Birthday' written with chocolate. We'll definitely be back.

Stumbled upon this place when looking for a bite to eat for lunch. Very nice menu to suit all tastes. We had the trout and arancini to start followed by the fish and chips and tagliatelle. All was excellent. Would definitely recommend to anyone.

Came here for dinner the other night with a friend and made to feel welcome immediately. The restaurant looks lovely and great atmosphere. We had the prawns and mussels to start then I had the Himalayan salt aged rib-eye steak and my friend the ravioli. Absolutely delicious! My friend still had room for the sticky toffee pudding which looked great. All in all a very good evening with good and service delightful.

Nice chilled brasserie, on top of a stylish wooden bar . Great “real” food, casual dining for a overall awesome experience!!!

My colleagues and I went here for lunch on our lunch break during the week. The décor was lovely and the atmosphere very friendly. we were served immediately and nothing was any trouble.

The recently opened restaurant upstairs in the comfortable bar that is The Apothecary deserves to be a huge success.

WOW! Found this place by accident and how lucky do we feel after eating in this beautiful venue. We was greeted by the manager who then explained they had only just opened this week so it was 50% off (another bonus!)

My husband and I decided to try a different part of Edinburgh. We decided to try the Quartermile and found this little gem. We had the most delicious pizza, lovely and crispy. They also distill their own gin and beer and it would have been rude not to try both, which we did, they were excellent. The staff were very friendly and attentive.

This is fast becoming my local. The staff are always friendly. Nice mix of beers, gins etc and delicious pizza. Prices at top end of scale. Sometimes live music and quiz. Nice relaxed atmosphere. Our waitress Densia was particularly attentive & helpful. Option to sit outside which is nice when Scottish weather permits.

We were pleasantly surprised by Apothecary. The environment was great--we were there later in the evening so it was mellow and relaxing. Earlier, it appears to be appropriately energetic. We enjoyed the craft beverages that are produced on site--both beer and gin. The house-made pizzas are also worth trying. They were "just right" to go with our beverages.

I expected this place to be expensive given it’s in Simpson loan but it’s not, and they do great student discount offers. Friendly staff and good drinks, can’t fault it. Pizza was delicious.

Wouldn't have found this on own. Off the beat & path but worth the effort. Excellent friendy service. Top notch cocktails and all round good vibes. Well done guys.

Came up to Edinburgh for our 30th Wedding Anniversary. Found this lovely place on our first night. Sat outside in the glorious sunshine. Bar staff very friendly and helpful. Great beers and their own Gin went down very well. We came back twice more during our stay as we had enjoyed it so much. On our last night they had a quiz. We decided to stay and participate, so glad we did. We didn’t win but had a great time. Thanks to Ritchie for making my wife and I feel like special customers.

Went here a few times over my stay.... Cocktails were amazing and the local beer they had on tap was amazing. A good little bar in a quite area of Edinburgh.

Pleasant chap took order for two coffee specifically asked for one to be very hot .

Just a few minutes walk from Lauriston Place, next to Nanyang, ut you need to know it's there! We stopped by a for a quick drink one wet evening. Good crowd of people and excellent selection of beers and gins. Lovely bright furniture and comfortable chairs and friendly staff. Small but interesting selection of food. Apparently there is a brewery upstairs, but I didn't see signs of this.

Very spacious, eye-catching Décor. Lovely staff serving gorgeous gins in a great atmosphere. They were smiley and had a really good chat. Keep it up! :)

Apothecary is a new bar in the heart of the city centre, hidden in the modern Lister square area. A modern yet traditional new bar, Apothecary's rustic decor and its in-house brewery and distillery located above the bar reminds me of traditional public houses where bar owners brewed their own beer for serving. A great local bar that is a must visit.

Managed to get seats outside in the sun during the festival. Inside great too with a nice chilled out vibe. Friendly helpful staff and great drinks especially their own gins and beers; £5.50 for a double Gin Goblet is an amazing deal. Can’t wait to see what the brewery and distillery upstairs looks like once it’s revealed. Will definitely be back and considering having my birthday party in the cool events space upstairs.
