Amazing food as ever! This really is a gold mine of a place. Great food and such sweet staff. It’s a few doors down from where I live so couldn’t be handier but I can never understand why it’s not busier. The food is so tasty and it’s certainly not average Indian food from, I gather, Northern India with Nepalese too and you can really taste the difference. It’s a bit scruffy inside but don’t let that put you off. I’ve never had a bad meal !

We had an excellent curry here , everything was very fresh and each dish was delicious. We had prawn dansak and a cream paneer dish . We will definitely make this our regular local Indian curry restaurant. The prices are also very reasonable for the quality of the food . It’s easy to find , located in the five bells pub building on plumstead common near the slade.

I feel that to reveal this hidden gem, may not serve my own selfish being. The food in this restaurant is far from the fast food culture that we have become used to. If you are lucky enough to come on a Bollywood night, be prepared to immense yourselves in Indian culture, where the atmosphere is warm and family centric, whilst the food tantalises your tastebuds with the smell of sweet spices wafting across the tables like delicious dreams of what is to come. Highly recommended, we love this palace of the finest Indian cuisine.

Came here during the “eat out to help out” scheme. Place was open, but empty. Not a single guest in there. This should probably have been our first warning sign. But we were hungry, so decided to get a table and place an order, although it felt very awkward. The tables and chairs all had a thick layer of dust on them, clearly no one had visited in a while. They seemed completely unprepared for customers. They started switching on the lights around the room, a guy in the kitchen started “firing up” the cooker while a young woman started assuming the waitress role. One big bloke sat in the corner of the restaurant and seemed to be doing bookkeeping. We actually came across him before, a few years ago when the restaurant was called Apni Haveli, and a suited up guy was there to discuss finances with him. We got the impression he was the owner of the restaurant and in deep financial trouble. This all happened in full view of paying guests. Shortly after this, the restaurant changed its name to 5 Rivers, although everything else has stayed the same, even the plates with the old name on them. So, that guy was sitting in the corner with his finance books once again, as if he hadn’t moved an inch since we last saw him a few years ago. We asked the waitress, “you offer the 50% off, right?” as this is what the “eat out to help out” scheme was about - customers got 50% off their bill (drinks not included) and the government paid the rest, restaurant didn’t loose out. We expected a yes but just wanted to confirm. To our surprise she said no. We looked at each other puzzled, as we knew they were signed up to the scheme. You could check online who was and who wasn’t. I asked, “why not?” and she turned to the guy in the corner and said, “uncle?” then asked him our question in their language. He said no. We went ahead with the order, since we had already placed it. The food was nice. Not spectacular, but nice enough that I would chose this restaurant again, if not for the poor service and awkward atmosphere. Paid the full price and left. We came home and double checked - yes, this restaurant was indeed signed up to the scheme. This means they charged us full price for our meal, and could then submit our order value to the taxman for a 50% rebate. Very dodgy.

The food can be VERY good - it can be average..... The customer service can be good - it can be awful..... Your order can take 15 minutes to be prepared - it can take an hour and a half....... The phone is sometimes answered - it is sometimes ignored...... You can be at the counter waiting to order - you might be seen...... There might be a private party - you would never know...... Main course are "small" or "large" - small is the size that most restaurants use for the starters and side dishes. Menu is limited, but the food CAN be very good - sometimes. The manager is a reasonable man, and is doing his best to make this place work. Unless he acknowledges the problems this place has it will never improve. Look at the reviews - the negatives in them all ring true to me.

Totally unimpressed with this place, 2nd time here. 1 staff in kitchen 1 staff at bar and main restaurant Chef was running ragged, bloke outside in main restaurant area more concerned with speaking to a drinker at the bar about properties and what to let and where... Didn't bring warm plates, didn't place the table, no condiments, didn't even ask if everything was Ok, didn't ask if we needed anything else....in fact we had to go to the bar and explain tjat our order was ready to be served and the chef was trying to get his attention. Total shambles of a place, food tasted average an the waiting time is not worth the food or service (or lack of) that comes with your order. If this is the best plumstead has to offer, there's a huge gap in the market and you're probably better off going to city of London...avoid this place unless you like waiting forever for food and with nobody asking if youd like a drink - it's not like we're eating for free!!

Visited this restaurant for casual dinner while I was in the area. We ordered 3 veg dishes and all of them were very tasty and full of flavour. Breads were ok and could be better. I will go there again and recommend for authentic Indian food. If visiting with kids ask for mild version of food!

Visited this place with another couple and a friend, and it’s easy to find with parking outside and on the side road. Nice open restaurant and we noticed they have a stage for entertainment too. Food was decent and the Goat Curry was the highlight.. keema was average and the chicken bhuna was spot on as I asked to have it made with extra chilli.. the mixed grill could’ve been a bit bigger but it was tasty and the fish pakoras were excellent.. place needs a bit of character though as the Nepali waitress wasn’t a great host. She was ok. As there are so many terrible restaurants in our area, I’m glad to recommend this one. Enjoy

I reviewed this restaurant a year ago and I didn’t do it justice at all, ( the food was too spicy for me) on the few occasions I have been in since it has been fantastic. The food is lovely and made to my required taste and the beer hits the spot! ( a must have with a curry) the atmosphere is great especially on Saturday nights as there is often traditional entertainment, service is good and the place is very clean. Always made to feel very welcome and as a bonus they do a delivery service too !

Fantastic spicy freshly made affordable food. Proud owner who takes the food more seriously than the service side, but for great consistent tasty traditional North Indian food you will never find this quality for these prices. Sizzling tandoori chicken is definitely one of the favourites also all the lamb dishes.

Have been coming here regularly for 4 years now. It's my favourite budget Indian restaurant by some distance, overtaking Tayyabs and Needo grill in my affections some time ago. Atmosphere wise it is entirely contingent on the day when you come... we've been the only people in the restaurant before (which was a pleasure) and have been there when it's absolutely rammed. The lamb chops are the best I've had hands down and are worth visiting for alone but so many of the other dishes are fantastic. Our regular favourites are: Lamb chops Aloo tikki chaat Chicken tikka (succulent and sizzling) Jeera chicken Goat Curry (my absolute fave) Tarka daal Mushroom curry I could go on to be fair. Having eaten at budget and michelin starred indian restaurants I am pleased to have Apni close to me, the flavours keep us going back.
