Had a delicious family Sunday lunch with 7 of us, absolutely lovely food, generous portions with loads of different veg. Had the steak and kidney pud which was amazing! Everyone else enjoyed their roasts and we all squeezed a homemade pudding in from the impressive list! Old school village pub with great food.

I made a booking here for us and the dog as we were coming over to the market near Skipsea and wanted a really nice Sunday lunch afterwards. I couldn't find any dog friendly ones near there that I liked from the reviews and the dog friendly options were few and far between but i found this one after searching a bit further out it didn't disappoint infact it was superb. We had a table in another room as obviously we can't go in the restaurant with a dog totally understandable but it was all laid out for us just as in the restaurant. We had prawn cocktails to start with beautiful prawns and they did my sauce seperate as i requested and had lovely bread rolls and butter to accompany these. Followed by 2 roast beef dinners all cooked to perfection and the vegetables such a good selection and once again all cooked as we like them. We don't do al dente so thank you for how you do them. All the staff were amazing so friendly and nothing too much trouble. They even got some meat scraps for our dog to take out. Our dog had the best day too meeting other dogs. We throughly enjoyed it all and will definitely be returning as often as we can. Even a lovely grassed area with duck pond outside to see. What a beautiful setting. You are our favourites.

I visited the Anvil Arms yesterday for an early tea and drink. We took our dog who was made welcome in the tap room and found a cosy corner to sit. (In this room you will find a pool table and darts, a real bonus!) We received a friendly welcome at the door and advised which side to sit in with the dog. The barman was really friendly and helpful and quickly got us our drinks and told us about the food options. The menu is simple, home-cooked delicious food. I ordered home cooked ham with chips eggs and a beautiful fresh salad. The food is incredible value for the quality and portion. The ham was delicious and the eggs had glorious golden yolks! I just wish I had room for pudding as they menu looked very tempting! (There is a stack of ham under my eggs, but it’s hiding)! I can’t wait to bring my husband when we return in the winter as this will be right up his street. Thank you!

We booked Sunday lunch whilst we were visiting the area on Sunday 14th Nov 2021, we had two dogs with us so thought we might struggle to get somewhere that could accommodate us, but these people welcomed us and fed us with so much kindness and attention with an awesome lunch which beggered belief. Only downside was we had so much lunch we couldn’t try one of their delicious desserts. Thank you so much to the chef and staff!

Seemed happier serving the drunks in the tap room that anyone wanting food. It was as though they wanted a quiet night and didn't want the business. It's a shame really as local pubs like this are doing far better and 400% more business by adopting a more positive attitude, without turning business away.

Visited the Anvil for lunch on Sunday with friends. We have eaten lots of Sunday lunches over the years but for me, this is simply the best. It's friendly, it's efficient, it's a lovely relaxed atmosphere and the food itself, is fantastic. No fancy stuff, just really fresh ingredients all cooked to perfectly. The quality of the meats (there's a good choice of beef, lamb, pork and chicken) especially are great. The helpings are huge but try to save space for the deserts...……… especially the crumble. Lovely smiley man ( owner maybe ) behind the bar, We went for the second sitting of Sunday lunch, 2.30pm everything homemade and delicious, numerous veg fresh, and tasty, and proper gravy too, we were told just to ask for more veg too if we wanted ( not needed ) Recommend you book ( or you have very little chance of a table ) but you could just sit next to the real fire. Lovely efficient staff, not rushed at all, I will definitely return. The bonus is, your mobile won’t work !!! It’s great, also received a lovely Mother’s Day plant, what a nice touch. Been several times now for Sunday lunch. Tried both sittings. On the second sitting some of the puddings can be sold out, but after the main course (and possible a starter too) you probably won't have room for a pudding. There is always a roaring fire and friendly service. Love the large selection of vegetables served with the roasts. The roast potatoes are like Mum used to make - cooked in the beef juices - delicious! Can't fault it really.

We visited this lovely little pub last Monday and was pleasantly surprised! We always check TripAdvisor when we visit somewhere new and was a little dubious due to the last review left about the beer! However we had nothing to be concerned about as the beer was beautiful! My husband sampled all 3 hand pulls and favoured them all equally. I had the carling and that was lively and yummy. Now for the food.....we all had different choices from the menu which was presented on a chalk board which we felt was a lovely touch, I opted for the 5oz sirloin steak with all the trimmings and the rest of the party had homemade steak and ale pie, warm honey cooked ham, scampi and salmon. There was other choices too! All the food was served fresh and the portions were very generous! But we managed to squeeze in dessert, homemade apple and fruit crumble with custard! Beautiful. The hubby chose treacle sponge and custard. Overall the service and food was amazing and the landlady/chef or cook as she calls herself, made us feel very welcomed and was very friendly. We will definitely be visiting again some time soon!

We were in Wold Newton for a wedding over the weekend, and 12 of us arrived at the Anvil Arms on Friday night, having booked and consulted about our options. The extended family included Welsh and Americans, all of whom greatly enjoyed their evening. This local has a great atmosphere,is very welcoming and Sheila gave us her personal attention. The young staff were excellent, making sure we were all well looked after, and we had a range of foods which satisfied vegetarians meat eaters and fish fans alike. for those who could manage it, the dessert choice was varied, but even Tom couldn't finish his sticky toffee! (James did better!) Both Theakstons and Black Sheep were available at the bar, and Grandma found a soft drink to her taste. We chatted away at the end and felt we had enjoyed great food at a very reasonable price. Highly recommended by all of us. Thankyou all.

Joining the work team for a leaving do, the Anvil Arms at Wold Newton was our destination. This lovely pub overlooks the village pond and is in a very pretty Wolds location.Fortunately, I knew in advance that it was 'beer and burger' night which for me immediately set the alarm bells ringing, as they usually contain the dreaded gluten, wheat or both.Given this is a traditional country pub, I thought it best to call ahead and ask about their menu. While there wasn't anything on the regular menu that I could have, the chef had a very in-depth chat on the phone and asked all the right questions. While the rest of my colleagues had the very tasty-looking burgers and chips, I felt very virtuous when my chicken breast wrapped in smokey bacon, salad and new potatoes arrived! The chef even came out to say my meal was being prepared separately. This went above and beyond and really showed the chef cared and listened to a rather demanding customer! For drinks I was on the rather tame lemonade (I was driving). The meal available at a very special 'beer and burger' price and really helped us say a fond farewell to our colleague. Definitely try this pub if you're in the area.

We got our drinks and looked at the menu. It is limited but you're in the country so to offer too much would mean frozen. We settled on a starter to share followed by sirloin and a Gannon steak. Wow, the food kept coming. With the Gannon came 2eggs, mushroom, fresh pineapple, onion rings. Then came the roasted veg, peas carrots and broccoli. Then the chips and new pots. It was excellent. I can't understand why, but reading every review nobody knows how to spell Potato! potato (unless plural has no e).Anyway this little country pub offers amazing homemade food nothing is frozen and Sheila makes the most magnificent chips I've ever had. Yes I agree the portions are massive but all vegetables are served as sides, you don't have to eat it all up. You can still have pudding. How does she do it for the money? Well Sheila supports the local producers and serves veggies which are in season and isn't the usual greedy landlady. Sunday lunch, well there are 2 sittings and is always busy so there's your answer. Wow. What a Gorgeous meal. I had the mixed meat Sunday dinner. A plate full of meat, homemade Yorkshire pudding and as much potatoes and vegetables we could eat. Fed 7 of us with drinks for under £100. Shame I don't live anywhere near otherwise it would quickly become my local every week.

Try to call here for Sunday lunch, at least once a month when we're at home. Welcomed back like a long lost relative on our recent visit. We've been away for a few weeks so unable to get our usual fix of beef, pork, lamb, steak and kidney pud & at this time of year turkey.Landed Friday morning and Sunday lunch at the Anvil Mmmmm. I even had to phone from Florida to book my table but it was worth it.As ever, Shirley in charge, front of house with Richard behind the bar! Not forgetting the all important "Queen of the Kitchen" (mine host) Sheila and her trust team of girls, all helping to make for a wonderful atmosphere in which to enjoy real home made food.We love this place so much, earlier in the year, we held our Ruby Wedding Anniversary party here and Sheila really did do us proud - all without breaking the bank - terrific value for money!I can also recommend the A la Carte nights (Friday and Saturday) but come with an appetite or you won't clear your plate.

The food here is home made and very good quality, but it is hard to get a table as the eating area is quite small, and they do not serve food every day. Tuesday evenings are great music nights with live bands and free home-made chips!

We recently held my Father's funeral here and I just want to say the staff were exremely friendly and helpful. The food served was of excellent quality for a very reasonable priced. The food was mosly prepared on cooked on site too. The location is fantastic with a pond just to the right of the front entrance so you can relax outside on a hot summers day and let the world pass you by. Recommended,

Whenever we visit Anvil Arms we are never disappointed, Sunday lunch epitomises home cooking at it's best. Thursday lunch is a joy, as are a la carte on Friday and Saturday. If anyone is not satisfied then I don't know what they want. Sheila is a cook and not a chef (her own words) so if patrons require prissy dribbles of jus, or four chips stacked, pea purée etc then this is not the place for them. Just honest, locally sourced food, cooked well by a lovely lady, and served by great staff. I think the latest review from a Carole J is pathetic, but there is always one isn't there? However people are entitled to their opinion, but as far as I am concerned the "numbers" speak for themselves. In other words, book early to avoid disappointment!

When we arrived, we were told we couldn't have drinks at our table until the landlady okayed it. The menu was very limited. My husband was 'told off' for wanting a mixed grill without pre-ordering (this hadn't been mentioned) & the landlady moaned that our meals would take longer if he insisted on having it. We waited one hour for the food to arrive. I would be interested to know if this pub makes a profit on food or knows its waste margins as we were presented with a large amount of unnecessary food, such as carrots to go with scampi and gammon. Both chips & new potatoes were served without asking which we required. The scampi was fine but the portions far too large. The gammon was accompanied by a slice of fresh pineapple - lovely! - but it wasn't peeled or cored, yet the scampi had lemon cut into zigzag shapes which made it difficult to squeeze. Why spend time on one but not the other? For some bizarre reason each plate was garnished with one solitary mushroom & two tiny tomatoes, including the mixed grill, which consisted of a large pile of dried meat. My husband praised the lamb but said the rest was overcooked & very salty. It was hard to swallow because there was no wetness on the plate. Less meat with some portabello mushrooms or larger tomatoes would have considerably improved it & cut their costs. We felt that someone was almost trying too hard by adding unnecessary garnishes - a piece of cherry on top of the lemon! - but missing the finer detail like the pineapple. Definitely a case of 'less is more' - it could make such a difference & save a lot of time in the kitchen, which would improve things all round.

Having dined, Sunday lunch, here on many occasions my wife and I decided to ask Sheila to cater for a buffet to celebrate our 40th anniversary. We, and ALL of our guests, were not disappointed!!!There were 30 of us and food enough for an army - all lovingly presented by mine host Sheila Baker. And, even though we paid her 25% more than she asked for at the end of the evening (she wouldn't take more, her answer being, that we "are not just customers we have become friends as well) this represented less than half of what I had been charged earlier in the year (at a local Café/restaurant) for a 90th birthday party and I have to say the Anvil Arms wins my vote for quality, service and value for money! How this lady makes a living I don't know!I have known the owner since she took on the, what was a run down, village pub and single handed turned it into the lovely thriving business it is today. With a regular following for her excellent Sunday lunches - you need to book early, tables fill up fast - to her other weekly specials: Tuesdays live Country sing along, Wednesday afternoon cream teas, Thursday pensioners lunch, Friday and Saturday evening A la Carte and frequent other specials including live entertainments. Incidentally Sheila wa also willing to forgo her Saturday A la carte, close her restaurant and provide our evening buffet closer to our actual anniversary, I have to say, although honoured by the sentiment, the business head on me wouldn't allow her to lose out in this way - we chose Wednesday evening (after cream teas) and had most of the pub & restaurant to ourselves.Every one of my guests have commented on how lovely the buffet was and those who, hitherto, have not been to the Anvil Arms before tell me they will be back!!Thank you again Sheila, you're a special lady and, you helped to make our anniversary celebrations special too.

The meal was outstanding. There was plenty of "traditional" choices and all was served with Yorkshire pudding and plenty of fresh vegetable and choice of potatoes. One course was £9, 2 courses was £11 and 3 courses was £13.

We took our kids (6 and 2 - not shy!) for Sunday Lunch here and had a wonderful meal. The pub is a free house right next to the village pond in this pretty Wolds village. We got there early and it appears we were lucky to get in as I think we'd have missed the boat had we arrived much later - book a table if you can.The pub has a two bar areas and a restaurant and we were seated in the lounge bar. Really characterful inside, it was nice to go into a pub with a traditional feel and no hallmarks of pub chain culture. The menu was all written on blackboards, we had adults' and kids' Sunday roasts and they were excellent. Meat excellent and plenty of it, vegetables served separately were really fresh and again plentiful. Staff were excellent and very helpful. We were full so decided against puddings despite the fact the list was very tempting.Good range of ales on tap, my Theakstons was spot on but they also had Black Sheep and Wold Top on, as well as a decent wine list. There's no card machine so cash only - make sure you bring enough, though we thought the value for money was very reasonable.Seems they have regular pub quizzes, an acoustic music night and just generally a real friendly feel.We hope to be back there before too long!

Abley supported front of house by Shirley, Amy and, behind the bar, Richard.Been in Florida for a few weeks so this was my first visit since getting home. I'd almost forgotten what a well cooked, traditional, Sunday lunch tasted like - just like mum used to make!Terrific value for money too. Thanks to all at the Anvil Arms - see you all again soon.

We stopped in on a Tuesday late afternoon. There was only one table occupied so it was nice and quiet. We both had double scoop cones. There were loads of ice cream flavours to choose from. Yummy.

We booked into the lodges next to the Gardeners Inn and decided to walk around for dinner & drinks. The venue is decorated for Halloween which I did enjoy and we had a lovely welcome from the waitress. A few item were sold out but the menu was plentiful and the food did not disappoint. I had the sizzling hunters chicken and my partner had Korean Chicken. Portion size was fantastic the side salad & slaw was fresh, definitely the best hunters chicken I’ve had. Banoffee Pie & cream for dessert again it was better than any other I’ve tried. Lovely atmosphere, service time felt right for the number of tables eating and the price was reasonable. Would recommend 100%

First visit to this lovely little restaurant to celebrate 🍾 both Mother’s Day and my wife's 60th birthday and we were not disappointed! The setting in the window table with background music and plenty of space was perfect. We ate off the a la carte menu and we both had three courses complimented by a bottle of fizz. Each course was food heaven and the service was exceptional so we will be returning for the Sunday lunch to celebrate my birthday in April. Thank you
