Antipodea in Richmond upon Thames

I recently completed a two-month stint at this restaurant. Unfortunately, during my time there, I encountered issues with late payment, with delays extending over a week in the first month and two weeks into the second. My attempts to contact them have been met with silence. However, I must commend the dedicated staff who consistently delivered excellent food despite limited resources. While the restaurant upholds public health and quality products as core values, my experience behind the scenes revealed inconsistencies in meeting these standards.

Cute space with tasty all day brunch offering. Lost stars as a few things felt egregiously priced (2.50 for one slice of toast) & for 15% service charge I would have expected more than 1 clearly stressed woman running around the whole restaurant. Maybe stick to 12.5 & pay your staff better? EDIT just read elsewhere that the staff don't even get the service. Thank God the law is changing soon.

Our new favourite spot! We came here on Christmas Eve and again on Mother's Day. It is our little slice of Sydney that we miss so much. The food is delicious and the service is fantastic. Also the cheesecake is insane! My husband actually broke a light when we were there the other day and we felt so bad, but the staff dealt with it in such a nice manner. We are sorry again that it happened! We will be seeing you soon and will continue to book for special occasions. Thank you again for such special memories.

Excellent experience, nice atmosphere and great food. The staff were also very accommodating squeezing us in when we had to change the time on a busy Mother’s Day. I’d recommend the baked cheese cake as well.

Really disappointing overall. Waited 30 mins before someone came over to take my order then waited another hour to receive my mains with no sides. Ended up cancelling the rest as didn’t want to spend half a day waiting for service. Orange juice did not taste like orange juice and I felt unwell the rest of the day. Avoid.

Came for brunch and left hungry because they didn’t serve us anything after 1hr wait after ordering and was very slow. Iced coffee came in a beer cup and didn’t taste like coffee :/

40 min wait for a steak and chips? No sauces and no seasoning on the meat should have checked the reviews they are actually telling the truth for once…

Truly disgusting food & service. Only went because Peggy Jean was fully booked. Antipodea is the polar opposite of Peggy Jean. Avoid at all costs.

The ambiance and decor are great, with a contemporary yet nostalgic feel for any Australian. The menu is varied and interesting but honestly I was quite disappointed with the food itself. The pide was bland, served as an uninteresting wrap, nothing like delicious pides (usually a pointy pizza like form) in Australia. The meal was over priced and ultimately not satisfying, and no pizzas served on the day of the visit. It was the service however that let the place down most, we were not greeted warmly by the manager, we had to ask repeatedly for table service, and as ever when staff take orders without writing anything down there is the concern that something will be forgotten, which indeed happened so we had to wait quite a while for one person’s dish and by the time it arrived the others had finished eating. We left feeling dissatisfied, like we had paid too much for poor service and disappointing food, so I don’t think we’ll be returning. If you’re just going for coffee then yes it’s a nice atmosphere, but I wouldn’t recommend the food - you can eat much better elsewhere for the same price.

Awful experience - avoid. They are direly understaffed. When the food finally did arrive it was cold and we didn't eat it - we were concerned about the safety of the eggs. We waited 30 minutes with the inedible food sitting on our plates in full view of other diners before anyone returned.

Honestly one of the worst places I have been to in a while. We were sat by the kitchen, in a space that wasn’t even a space (despite booking), the bench didn’t even fit the table so my friend was basically hanging off the edge. We then ordered our juices… 20 mins go by. I then have to flag down a waiter to ask where they were and also order our food. Food then comes 20 mins later.. but still no juices. We ask again, and say if they come after the meal we don’t really want them. The waiter informs us that he’s sure his manager will take care of them. They come another 10 mins later after we finish eating. One isn’t even the correct order but we take it anyway. The bill then comes with the juice still on the bill. We ask to see the manager. She comes over and states ‘apparently you don’t want to pay for the juices that you drank’ I was so taken aback, having never been spoken to like this before. This service is the worst I have ever had and I will certainly not be back!

We visited this cafe 3 times, because the menu and coffee are great, as are the cakes on the counter. The service was frustrating every time. They’re incredibly disorganised and chaotic. The counter was collecting dirty dishes for 2 hours. 2 of our orders were incomplete, and we collected our own coffees from the counter as they stood there for more than 10 mins. If you’re ok with the slow service, it’s still worth going for the atmosphere and food though.

We’ve come here for brunch twice and definitely recommend! So many options for different dietary requirements, as well as brunch options that feel like a treat but healthy at the same time? Yum! We’ll be back again for sure 🫶🏼

Very nice vibe and hearty meal!

Lovely space, food also quite good though some dishes better value than others (the slow roasted tomatoes with feta and toast is a piddly portion for the price). Service was patchy but the lady who was managing the place recognised this fact at the end of the meal. We’d return.

All in all, quite a poor experience. We were seated and served rather quickly. Our table was at the front of the restaurant, which got very cold whenever anyone entered or exited. Our food arrived 35 minutes after ordering and was very good despite two wrong dishes being delivered. It did however take 45 minutes after ordering for 2 coffees, a tea and an orange juice to arrive. This is ridiculous. We were not the only table to experience problems, with another table receiving incorrect food and another two receiving food before their drinks. This was our third time at Antipodea, and whilst the food is great, the service has always been poor and has gotten worse.

Booked a table for 2 on Sunday, 12 November 2023 at 09:45; finally we were 4 but they couldn’t accommodate a bigger table. The restaurant was empty, I mean E-M-P-T-Y , it was 9:45 am

Terrible service - system not working (staff are good but system in place failing). Food very average - very average indeed - would not bother.

Absolutely lovely place, good vibes... however £14 for eggs on toast.. or bacon sandwich.. I'm not so sure about that, just seems abit sill to charge that amount. But again nice vibes.

I stumbled upon this restaurant after having a beauty treatment in the local area. It looked nice enough and I thought the food would match the vibe it exudes. The food was ok and service was really lovely, coffee was not great. Not a positively memorable experience and I doubt I will return.

After a walk from Kingston, I was craving some pancakes, and pancakes I've got. The place is nice, food is good, toilets are clean, just what you need after a long walk! I just wish they would put more creme fraiche on their pancakes 😅

Ur colleague or manager whoever she is roksna was extremely rude when I visited. Needs to learn English and some manners speaking to an elderly women without any respect or thought for my disability. She is polish has a very strong accent

Really perfect place for Sunday brunch. Really nicely decorated place with very tasty brunch food and coffee and fresh juice. Richmond prices as to be expected so not a bargain but we enjoyed still.

It’s gone down hill unfortunately. Flat white milk was burnt (you could hear it screaming while being made) and not well poured - more something you’d expect at a greasy spoon. Food was still nice. I do like that they’re dog friendly though.

I have been to Antipodea a few of times now and whilst it was good in the beginning it has unfortunately gone downhill very rapidly. The service is poor, the food quality is poor whilst the prices are high and the biggest red flag for me is they can’t make fried eggs, which really makes me question what sort of state they receive their eggs in that they can only poach or scramble them. On our most recent visit today, the lady (blonde hair, white shirt) by the door made it clear that we were inconveniencing her by asking her for a table and kept us waiting for such a long time that we nearly walked out (with hindsight, we wish we had). The chicken thigh burger was exceptionally dry (tasted like it had been cooked before then heated up) and the drinks prices for the non-alcoholic drinks are extortionate. £6 for a warm juice. To be fair the chips were good and were the only item we would reorder. Save yourself a lot of money and go somewhere else in Richmond.

The atmosphere was low as it was a quiet day. Food is always fantastic, fresh and yum. The server was great fun, attentive and helpful

After the first Quin's game of the season the main was tasty and beware the lamington was huge.

We were very disappointed with the quality of the food and the service, £17 for a burger and fries that was extremely basic/average and service seemed to be all over the place. Wouldn't return unfortunately.

Just left this restaurant, never leave bad reviews but honestly this was so disappointing. Claimed to not have our booking on arrival even though half of the table had arrived and were already sat there. Didn’t have several drinks on the menu. Food was slow and arrived cold, had to be sent back, when it came back it was average at best. Asked for the dessert menu, was left for 5 minutes to choose then when they came to take our order they inform us they have 1 piece of cheesecake left and no other desserts at all?! It wasn’t even 2pm?! Why were we given the menu? Bill comes with 15% discretionary service and when I asked to remove it I got a lot of attitude about how that will have to be approved by the manager … Avoid, don’t waste your time and money. So many other places in Richmond.

I came for lunch as a group of two. I had smoked salmon on the pita bread and chorizo omelette and lamington and French fries. The smoked salmon was very good quality and French fries were fresh and nicely salted. However, the chorizo omelette was really too oily and the lamington cake was too dry. I also liked the atmosphere with plants and vegetation surrounding us in the restaurant. Overall, I had good lunch.

This place looked really nice from the outside, so I came in with family, the wines we had were nice but the food was very very basic for the price they charge. The manager took some money off, but unfortunately doesn’t change our experience.

Absolutely horrendous service. Menu did not indicate key dietary info (pork). Staff are slow and not polite. Overcharged us (after saying they would discount wrong items). Staff were reluctant to provide an invoice (???) Do. Not. Go. Just order the one good soup on Deliveroo. Served me walnuts by mistake.

Followed a friends recommendation to come for brunch here at the weekend, the welcome was strange! I asked for a table for one, the lady on the door told me she had just given away the last table, even though I could see several tables available. She said they were booked. So, I went away for an hour and came back to find those tables still vacant. I thought maybe they didn't want my custom as a solo person taking up a table for two, so I asked for a spot at the bar if they could please squeeze me in. The same lady said "we don't allow seating at the bar at the weekend, but a large table just left sooner than expected so we can sit you in the back". I then sat and had a lovely meal at the back of the restaurant almost entirely alone for about 90 mins. All the time, those tables in the front of the restaurant were empty along with almost half of the tables around me. SO WEIRD and felt a bit personal they just didn't want me to have a nice table for some reason?! The food was really good, service good (a bit slow but I wasn't in a rush), coffee good, but the lady on the door really let them down.

We were on our way to Bills, but saw this and decided to try it out. Pleasant surprize. Great food and very clean toilet rooms, which is an important factor.

Maybe make last reservation on Sunday 3.30, we had a 4pm reservation with restaurant closing at 5, so no time for dessert. Not ideal!

Food great, service terrible, had to ask for cutlery, food just plonked on table for us to sort out who's was who's. Had to cancel my fries which hadn't turned up when I had eaten 3/4 of my main course. Just felt like server did not care. Food was good so would recommend chef moves to a restaurant where front of house care about his food as much as he does.

Dog friendly!!! The food was excellent! The inclusion of some Australian favourites like Vegemite ensured lots of nostalgia and homesickness at our table but it didn't become clichéd and the food would bring us back even without the Aussie connection.

Brunch specialists. Cosy environment & chairs, interesting menu. Friendly and efficient service ~ @12:40. Table at window nearest the door very wobbly. A little pricey, but really enjoyed spending a little time here.

Good food but poor service. Visited for a weekend brunch, on arrival we had to wait a substantial amount of time before been served, this set the tone of the meal, with us having to wait a considerable amount of time for our drinks and food. The food was nice however the service let the experience down. The seating was also quite cramped and a few times throughout (and whilst we were eating) we were asked to move our table which is poor etiquette. For the cost of the food the service was below expected standards.

The food was really good, possibly exceptional, but needed more of it to feed my hangover. Quite pricey, even for Richmond.

Visited for lunch with my friend. Both ordered the prawn benedict special. It was nice but for £16 expected a larger portion, more prawns and hollandaise sauce... also pricing should have been clear from the start. Lovely staff but 15% service charge is extortionate and wasn't made clear before ordering. Nice place but very overpriced and therefore won't be returning.

Wow, so impressed with this place. I've visited before, but this was the first time I'd had a meal. The BLT pida is out of this world GOOD, Ill be dreaming about the bacon forever! The cockatils are also good, all served with very friendly staff. Can't recommend enough.

Really lovely breakfast, ambience, staff. Those mushrooms in a subtle balsamic flavoured cream, and split with a pesto was divine. This place knows how to do amazing scrambled egg. They call it folded egg and it's just perfect

Disappointed, me and my partner had been really excited about paying this restaurant a visit. Welcome on arrival was poor, ignored by a few staff whilst waiting at the door. Food was bland and pretty tasteless. Overall disappointing as it wasn't cheap, we won't be back unfortunately.

Great service. Delicious food...unusual choices...wood fired barramundi for example. I had cauliflower and truffle soup with polenta fries...gorgeous. Watch out for the portion size of the lemon meringue dessert. Huge!!!

Average. The decor is lovely and so is the ambiance. The let down was the food. My friend ordered the fish dish and it was too greasy. My other friend ordered the chicken and lacked of flavour. Fire wood nduja, pepperoni tomato and honey was nice and so was the Malbec! I prefer the one in Kew.

The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere and the staff were really friendly and helpful, however the food was awful. We ordered 8 different dishes and they were all bland, overpriced and super disappointing. We had to send the burrata back as they served one cut in half and we thought it was a mistake, it turns out for some reason the chef thinks changing £6.50 for half a burrata (which the whole point is that it is whole to cut into the creamy inside and when halved had become extremely dry) was somehow a good idea. If food flavour and value for money aren't a concern then the decor, ambiance and wait staff make this a really nice place to go. Strongly recommend avoiding if you're looking for good food sadly.

Half menu not on not very antipodean nothing you couldn't get in a harvester. Very cold both in restaurant and food no taste to it Indian style chicken just chicken no taste slaw tasted awful. Would not recommend this place nothing Australian or any where else really just expensive for nothing Feel sorry for staff they were good shame kitchen wasn't up to scratck

The surprise hero here was the roasted edamame. It was the strong starter to the evening. The chorizo scallops were delicious but very small. The crab and hake fish cake was good but more of a potato croquette. Quite delicious, but not what expected. The Indian chicken and slaw, on the other hand, was exactly as expected and very good. The duck chips were wonderful. Of course. The banoffee was light and delicious. The blueberry cheesecake was very slightly dry and could have used a glass of muscat as a companion. The service was very friendly and attentive. For a place we have been walking past in Richmond for months, we are finally glad we stopped in. Oh…Make a reservation! The first time we tried to “stop in,” they were full.

Very slow and average service. Bad quality food, I had 2 eggs with ham and I feel really heavy. Nothing special really, not worthy at all.

One of the best restaurants in Richmond. Cool vibe and interesting Aussie menu with healthy dishes if you want them. Recommend the goodness bowl which was full of goodness and more filling than I expected. I’ll be back.

What a find!! If you love cocktails this place offers some delicious ones. The food ranges from eclectic small plates, mains and pizzas. The decor is fabulous. Lots of beautiful plants and lighting fixtures. Staff was very pleasant. Highly recommend.

We have celebrated my husband’s birthday at antipodea richmond. He absolutely loved it, the guests were very happy. Rebecca is really nice and professional, the service was impeccable, the food delicious, highly recommended. Thanks so much guys for hosting us! Xx

Great service, delicious food in a welcoming ambiance!

Nice food, cool vibe and decor and friendly staff but such unbearably slow service that we will never come back sadly. Our glasses have been empty for 30 mins and food more than 1 hour and still waiting....

Decent tasting food and attentive service. Sadly, they lost a bit of my trust by advertising a pizza as "mushroom with fresh truffle" - on querying this, we were told it had a truffle oil dressing, which is not the same thing.

Went here on the 3rd August in the evening and I most say that the staff were most helpful and kind. A real credit to the Antipodea name. I was served by a marvellous waiter called Joe who really took the time to guide me through the menu and so was patience as it was my first time and had ever eaten Australian food before and was a little anxious. But that didn't matter as I had Joe! In the end I had the Pork Tomahawk and the scallops as a starter, which were delicious and my compliments go half to the chef who made it and to the waiter for recommending it. Paired with some fruity little cocktail, I do forget the name now. But it was lovely to see the staff making my drink quickly and more importantly, tastily!!! Also a massive thank you to Rebecca who greeted me and my date with the warmest of smile and took the time to explain any COVID restrictions in the restaurant and how the menu was layout. All around fabulous experience and staff, will be there soon again.

Only recently discovered this little gem after a friend recommended. Food is delicious! Lovely selection of coffees (matcha, chai etc). Staff were very friendly & accommodating.

Stumbled across this Australian restaurant on a day out in Richmond. What a find!! We had and amazing brunch with some epic cocktails and the service was perfect. Looking forward to getting back for dinner soon.

Came in with my girlfriend for her birthday and had a great time! Food was amazing and the staff was super attentive. Both our starters and mains were fenomenal and we even got some special treats (desserts and cocktails) on the house to celebrate the special occasion.

Food poisoning and disgusting food: starters ok; main curry tasted like a bowl of sugar + powdered cloves + supermarket curry powder; dessert was dry cake. But to add injury to insult, my usual iron stomach turned when home and all of it came back up. I don't say this lightly: possibly my worst meal ever. (Side note: the staff were friendly)

I think I might have come on a bad night. I had only been to their Kew location before and really loved it! This location was equally beautiful with real vines hanging from the ceiling and the staff was very friendly. The squid starter was quite nice and so was the burrata, though the burrata was more salad than cheese. Unfortunately it took about an hour for our mains to arrive and even though they weren't quite what we hoped, we ate them before we had to a chance to tell the wait staff as we were quite hungry. My partner got a steak he had ordered rare and it was unfortunately quite well done. I got a chicken thigh sandwich which was nice, but it was literally one chicken thigh so most bites were just bread with sauce. I feel badly that we didn't tell them about our issues before we ate as I'm sure they would have corrected them. Even though we told them about the steak after it had already been eaten, they still took it off of our bill even after we rejected their offer of a free dessert. We picked up some of their selection of Australian imports before we left. .

Would not recommend this place. The place has nothing to do with Australian food. The slowest service ever, it took an hour to get flat bread and the food was not amazing.

Nice little place with a good menu. Very friendly staff and polite. But it's not a place I would go for a meal. A lunch meeting of coffee no problem. It's very well looked in terms of cleanliness and hygiene 10/10

4 young dads went out one day! Once upon a time, 4 young dads, desperate to have some Guy Time, decided to have breakfast in Richmond area. After parking cars (public transport/ cycling recommended!) and walked into the restaurant, They were settled in the front green area by a kind and supercharged staff. Ordered coffees: (Latte, flat white and mocha), breakfasts: (Melt/🎯perfect, Turkish egg /🔎tiny!!, Egg Royale/🤓safe choice and Fritters/😋delicious) and juices:(Ginger beet and orange/ price wise, it could be served in bigger glasses) *If you prefer your coffee HOT, you need to mention it, otherwise you’ll share a “drink it right now”/ Stout temperature experience! (4.5 of 5) It was a Friday morning so it was quiet but gradually got busier as when 4 happy dads checked out, many tables were taken, outside tables gone first) They haven’t booked, do so, if you’re going there on weekends or for brunch or anytime around noon.)

Best breakfast I have ever had! We ordered coconut, berries and granola yoghurt (soooo delicious), Turkish eggs (a bit too spicy for me, but my husband enjoyed them) and blueberry and banana pancakes. The orange juice was out of this world. Rachel and Tom very really nice and we can't wait to bring our kids here.

EDIT: Look at the disingenuous response from the owner! This picture was taken the minute my plate was put down. You can see from the picture it's just been served like that. Rather than apologise why lie? It's really disgusting to lie when your customer leaves a genuine review and make out that it's something to do with them. Unlike the Instagram pictures, the pancakes looked super ugly. Mis-shaped but also tasteless. They were lukewarm and bone dry. In fact worst I have ever had. May try a savory dish before writing this place off.

The food was lovely and the staff very friendly and chatty but no request was fulfilled. We came as a group of 4 for a joint birthday of 2. I called ahead twice and requested on the website for a little candle in the dessert. We always reminded the staff when we came in. To our disappointment when we got the desserts the 2 people didn't get what we were expecting for their birthday dinners. We were compensated and the two desserts were taken off the bill which was very generous of them. Also called ahead that we are going specifically for the tomahawk steaks and was assured there will be some. We got there and they had none left. The other steaks were very delicious! My friend who ordered medium got medium rare but still nice. Desserts were soo good and very generous portions all round! (Except the 'pavlova' which had a tiny crumble of meringue. Chips and veg was lovely. Would go back for food but not for special occasion which is sad because Its a lovely atmosphere.

This is a good restaurant it was my first time, I had a very good meal and the staff were very friendly and helpful.

The food is very average for the prices they charge, not Aussie style at all plus they add extra service charge to the bill. I had breakfast there & my avocado mix (avocado with crab on sourdough toast) was definitely not fresh & prepared beforehand. The overall taste was plain with strong onion present (which supposed to be pickled). Maybe one positive thing - the freshly made orange juice was ok. I would not recommend this place if you want do get quality tasty food, maybe for the drinks it's not too bad!
