Antipodea Kew in Richmond upon Thames

This place is average. I would give it 3 stars, but the 15% service charge on the bill left a bad taste in my mouth. I have never seen 15% charge on a bill in London ever and for service that was mediocre. Maybe at an upscale dining establishment I could understand, but this place is not it. The food is fine, small portions, overpriced.

The food was good - I had an excellent aubergine side, my partner had a GF melt with ham and cheese. But the service - that's another story. On a Saturday lunchtime when they need to be on their game, we were served by a youngish man who seemed genuinely clueless: when we asked about progress with our drinks (after 15 minutes) he said that they were on their way, then we asked a waitress about 10 minutes later, then the first chap came back 5 minutes later and explained that our order hadn't gone through because of "the system". God knows it's not that big a restaurant that we might have slipped under the radar, and several times we saw attempts to deliver food to the wrong tables. I queried the 15% service charge (with a waiter who genuinely seemed to know what he was doing), which was removed.

A little quieter than we'd have liked but food was pretty good. They have a wide cocktail menu and my husband enjoyed the one he chose. We all chose dishes from the grill which were good; the main courses seemed to arrive at slightly different times which was odd since they weren't busy, and the side salad was simply a bunch of lettuce only with no dressing until I asked for it and that was £6.50. The waiter was a little intrusive, he interrupted deep conversation a few times which I find annoying.

Very overpriced and somewhat unfriendly service. The host didn’t even say hello to us before barking “do you have a reservation with us??” which we didn’t. Our order was noted down wrong and the wrong dish was brought, which was rectified fairly quickly but was awkward. I actually am still thinking about the prices and how outrageous they are for the quality, even in today’s market! The sweetcorn fritters in the photo are £16.50 and extra for the feta and egg! As we left nobody even said bye or thank you. We won’t go back.

Great Breakfast Been back for the best folded eggs on sourdough. Perfection on a plate.

I can't fault it, honestly. I'm surprised at other negative reviews. I found the service good, the food nice, and the atmosphere and location both great. It isn't cheap, no, but nor is it expensive.

Nice food, really loved the Turkish eggs (see photo)/ fresh pressed juices are a bit expensive though (6 pounds each)! still would recommend for breakfast / brunch and lunch!

I had the chosen the BLT pide, which was awful. Cold, flavourless flatbread - not at all what I was expecting - and relying on a tomato chutney to provide flavour, otherwise would bland as well. Mother in law liked her soup, hence the 2*. Decor is quite nice but service was just ok. Wouldn't go again.

Nice people, nice food, good service, good price.

Service was fairly poor despite seemingly looking overstaffed. A few people stood at the bar doing nothing. Upon arrival we were immediately told they were out of beer and some of the wines - which unfortunately happened to be exactly the drinks we wanted to order. When the food arrived I can only describe it as amateur. The beef tacos looked unappealing and flavourless. The cod dish was apparently very nice, but they’d also run out of cod - so they replaced with a different fish. Felt poorly managed more than anything else. Need better stock ordering, menu and chefs. Sorry to say.

The food was lovely but the service was awful. They were nice enough but just not attentive at all. Stood in the corner polishing cutlery with 3 or 4 tables needing attention. The waitress was looking everywhere but at the customers. The barman only filled the Prosecco glass half full and turned to the waiter to ask ‘what’s in a negroni again?’ A little unnerving. The atmosphere was a bit chaotic and along with the bad service I would say it wasn’t worth the price point.

Great place to eat before seeing the christmas lights. Food delicious! Just regret not getting a pudding! Staff very accodating. Recommend and would return.

We love it here! Food is always great and the staff are lovely. Can't wait for our next visit. We just hope they put some nice warm vegetables on menu as a side rather than just chips or a cold salad.

Stopped by for a late lunch on a Sunday afternoon. The place itself is really stylish and has a nice, clam ambience. Staff are also very friendly and attentive. We ordered a few things and there were a couple of vegan bits which was good. Portion sizes were decent, I shared the house salad, fries and vegan Turkish pide which were all very nice (I really enjoyed). But my friends who had the sweetcorn fritters and fishcakes said the food was a good size, presented nicely, but quite basic in flavour with no real taste so maybe avoid. Prices are okay. Think it would be a bit on the expensive side with alcohol. Would recommend but say 15% tip is added on which is more than average in most places. Think it's a little cheeky.

I was in the Kew branch this morning to find just one waitress trying to take orders, clear tables, make coffees & juices & bring out orders. She was still alone 3 hours later. She was doing her best, but it is impossible for one person to manage an entire restaurant. It looked and felt abusive. Some customers were venting their frustration on her. I was a regular customer but I will not return there. Judging by their very high prices they can afford to employ sufficient staff, but choose not to.

Way overpriced with 15% service charge on top...evenings are a no go whilst lunch has better selection and better value. I'm still smarting from the £16.50 not-that-impressive salad.

Loved the cool decor. Nice furnishings and a light airy space. A comfortable casual feel. I visited first for an excellent cappuccino in the morning prior to visiting Kew Gardens (the coffee is much better here). There also were gorgeous cakes including an amazing lemon meringue pie. Pleasant, friendly efficient staff. I returned for lunch. The choice is very varied and their very modern breakfasts are available all day. I opted for folded eggs (a large portion of sort of folded very thin omlette), with roasted tomatoes and feta and smoked salmon sides. All were very generous portions. Their house rose was very good and well priced. I would definitely return.

Our meal here was unfortunately really not good. I had the Eggs Florentine with gluten free bread, it was all cold, toast very dry, zero seasoning. My husband had the chicken pie which is actually a little casserole dish with pasty on top. Also not great. Service was fine and sitting outside was nice but would not recommend this spot for the food.

Awful!!! Avoid! We went for brunch with my mum, brother and 4 children aged between 3-11 years. The service was awful. The 3 year old cannot eat diary. The waitress said there was nothing on the menu she could offer which was non-diary, so we ordered her toast and jam. We mentioned that the toast would have to be without butter and could we possibly have margarine instead. She insisted they didnt have margarine because the owner wouldn’t allow them to buy it. She told us the owner didn’t care about what they said and didn’t listen to them. She said they only had one portion of pancakes which the children all shared. They said it wasn’t possible to make more pancake mixture. The pancakes were rubbery and the kids didn’t even eat the small portion they shared. My brother and I had egg Benedict’s and both of our eggs were hard boiled rather than runny. They took a small amount off the bill for the hard eggs but the bill still came to over £100! There are lots of lovely cafe/eating options in Kew…I would certainly avoid this place. Horrible service, food and expensive! I am a local and I will certainly never return.

2 of us chose the hake and crab cakes which were good. 2 of us chose the Lemak Laksa which were poor. I strongly advise the manager to remove this from the menu because the soup base was thin/watery, and needed more stock and coconut milk. It was missing tofu as described on the menu, which arrived when asked for, but was sour to taste! (Off!) It was an expensive laksa and was a huge disappointment.

Average food. We were told no pizzas and no vodka available as we sat down. The staff were friendly but so very slow with service, one drink came after the food. Despite previous reviews (which I wish I had read before booking) the side salad is still a small bowl of leaves only. The setting and decor is nice and menu looks tasty but the restaurant is quiet for such a prime and lovely setting in the middle of Richmond and food very bland and beige- fine for a quick bite but the price should be lower.

The service was ever so slow, the staff, apart from lady who was the manager, were so disinterested. She at least smiled and was friendly. The waitress who served us was surly as was the older man. Felt like you were bothering them. The food was ok but it’s expensive for what it is. Won’t be back.

Not worth it. Prices are insane when the food you get is very average. Glasses on the table for water are dirty, my husband got another one with ordered cola with lipstick stain from previous guest which is unucceptable.

Been there twice, ordered same food, consistently good. I give 4 instead of 5 stars for the following: Service is good but not memorable. Coffee on the bitter side Their steak frites is amazing and great ratio quality/ size/ price. However I wish theyd charge 3-4-5£ more but give a bigger steak. We had such a lovely meal in Antipodea. The place is stunning and all the staff was very friendly and efficient. The food was superb, special mention to the pepperoni pizza and the cakes. The service was very quick and they even gave us a little candle when we told them that we were having a birthday meal. Will be coming back on our next visit to Kew Gardens and will recommend it to everyone!!!

Met up with some friends for early dinner, we ended up here as they advertised a "Laksa Lemak" on their billboard. My friends and I ordered it, but sadly the food was nowhere near recognizable as a laksa curry, which was a huge disappointment - more tangy than and not enough coconut milk in the gravy, they didn't even use laksa leaf. The prawn/seafood version was an eye-stinging £19 per bowl, and the basic vegetarian/tofu version only a couple of quid less. My husband ordered the Margherita pizza, which he also thought was lackluster. Staff were efficient but I did feel like they tried to hurry us along, even though there was hardly anyone there when we came in at 4pm. Thankfully their desserts were good; I had the lemon meringue pie while my friends ordered the red velvet cake and carrot cakes. Main courses: 1/5. Dessert: 4/5.

Eggs Benedict cold. Everything was prepared, so no excuse. Croissant similar to the type supermarkets sell frozen. As others have said, poor food and overpriced. Please closedown and hopefully a decent eatery can take over this prime location.

Terribly overpriced for food received, I should have read the reviews. Menu did not accurately describe dishes- for example, “crispy chickpeas” in salad were straight out of a can, not crispy, nothing added. No one in my family got food that lived up to the expectations from the menu. Choose another spot.

Really poor overall, a real disappointment and the staff were totally useless. Came up with some really lame excuses as to why my Steak Frites was without the "Frites" and offered me a piece of bread instead! If I knew there was no Frites with the steak frites then perhaps telling me before I order or after the order has gone in to give me another option would of been courteous!! Instead they just served me a steak and a few salad leaves and then had the cheek to charge full price for it. My wife had a Thai dish which was charged extra for 3 prawns and was low quality, something I could of easily knocked up at home. Wine and beer was also very expensive. Overpriced, poor service, staff that don't care, and a low quality menu which is mostly not available due to chef/kitchen issues. We watched 4 tables of customers sit down and then leave as nothing on the menu was available. They must be losing a fortune. Saturday night on a bank holiday weekend and it was empty. That should have been enough to ring the alarm bells but I should have read the reviews before we sat down. Clearly this restaurant has major issues and I would avoid unless things drastically change but that would need some serious input from the owner.

Excellent place for brunch after visiting the Kew Gardens. After 2PM the place was half empty, but I would still recommend to book a table, just in case. It says that it's an Australian restaurant, but at least for brunch the Turkish vibes are very strong, with a few choices of pide. If you have to try one thing, go for blueberry pancakes. Those are delicious!

As local residents, we thought we'd give this place another go...well, to be honest, everywhere else was packed as it was a Friday night...but Antipodea was half-empty, which perhaps should have sounded the alarm bells. It was distinctly average last time we went and yet it has gone even further downhill. Very poor food and incredibly overpriced! The loud and annoying background music (atmosphere??) ganged up with the dreadful food and we got out of there as soon as we could, clutching our £125 bill! Locals don't go there and we won't be going back again... although I doubt the owners will lose much sleep over that. But maybe they should be rather more concerned that no-one else seems to be going there either these days?

Table booked for 10am. The restaurant amended it twice, first to 10:30 and then to 10:45 without any notice at all. I don’t think that’s how restaurant reservations normally work? Then I was ignored by the staff trying to order a simple coffee. Thankfully the gentleman behind the bar noticed and ensured I was served. An absolute delight and too good for this establishment. Richmond branch far better.

I love the decor and atmosphere of this place, and the team are friendly. But the pizza I had was north the worst and most expensive I had in years. Even though I’m a pizza lover, I couldn’t eat more than half of it! Low quality, poor presentation, looked far too processed and walked out really regretting my visit :/

Really bad service, the waitress is rude and has no people skills whatsoever

My friend and I had tables outside, in the spring sunshine. Table service was a little slow, but they were really busy so this was understandable, and our food & drinks arrived surprisingly quickly, given how busy they were. We both had the Eggs Benedict. The eggs perfectly poached, and the yoke a vibrant red/orange - very tasty, accompanied by a superb hollandaise sauce. The ham was disappointing. It was just a thin slice of rather flavourless meat, but the eggs & sauce compensated for this. My big mistake was ordering the Lamington - and ordering "take away". Had we been dining inside, I probably wouldn't have ordered one because I would have seen how puny they were in the display cabinet inside. The first indication of the size was when my friend looked in the box and warned me that I would not be impressed. I decided to reserve judgement until I got home. If it still tasted good, then we could forgive the small serving, right? It weighed 134g vs the average weight of lamingtons I buy in London of 220 grams. There was no cream layer inside and only a thin thin scraping of jam. The sponge was EXTREMLY dry. If I had ordered it to eat-in, I would have sent it back after one bite. As it was, it ended up in my rubbish bin - and I never throw food away. I've eaten some bad cakes in my time but I do believe this one was one of the worst. Dear Antipodea Baker - please go to Blackbird Bakery to see & taste a good lamington. What was served to me was disgraceful. NB: the last photo is of what a lamington should look like. Looooooove some early mornings or later brunchings at this place (breakfast is actually served all day), the staff are the best, menu is fantastic and food is spot on!

We have visited Antipodea on many occasions and I love the portobello mushrooms on toast. However, our latest visit was really disappointing - we went especially for pancake day and had some really lack lustre pancakes. The special was listed as mork pancakes with maple syrup and caramelised banana. The maple syrup wasn’t there and the banana was chopped up in the pancake (definitely not caramelised!). My blueberry pancakes were under done and I had to ask for maple syrup on the side as barely any was given - the creme fraiche listed was a smear on the top of one pancake. Both of us felt we could have made better at home. To be fair to the waitress, she noticed that the mork pancakes were poorly presented and was apologetic, however she only took £2 off the bill. £31 for a hot chocolate, tea and two lots of tasteless pancakes stung a little. I’m sorry to say it’s put us off coming back.

Cozy place with a good range of options to choose from the menu. The staff is friendly and the sourdough is amazing, so any option with it will be surely good! The option with avocado, feta and chorizo is a must try 😋😋 Will be back for sure!

**Not a very good brunch place for food - Go the Richmond branch ** Service - 2/5 Food - 2/5 Ambience - 4/5 A great brunch spot in a nice setting, but the food and service leave much to be desired. The toast with butter and jam - bread was OK, but the jam was below par. It was almost a jelly, not a conserve (which I would expect). 😩 Sweetcorn fritters were dry, with little to no sauce. When we asked the waiting staff if this was intentional - we were informed the fritters are cooked to be dry 😕 We ordered a soft boiled egg - the egg came with its shell and we were asked to de-shell the egg ourselves. The egg was too soft and it collapsed on itself. Waiting staff informed us the chef do not shell eggs for customers. 😯 We asked these to be taken back. The avocado and crab was under seasoned - the bread underneath wasn't buttered/spread.😔 All in all, it felt as though the food was lacked quality, and thought. Avoid.😶 They have a branch in Richmond which is much better. 🤨

Awful experience- I was persuaded to come here after a previous bad visit! I should have listened to my gut! Came at 2pm and half of the options on the menu not available/sold out and the waitress stating a ‘busy breakfast’- why would people order burgers, steak etc for breakfast! An excuse! We ordered and 3 meals arrived with the 4th according to the waitress was given to another table! We thought it was a joke! So 3 of us ate whilst the 4th person had to order something else yet again! NEVER AGAIN

We came here with group of friends on 06/02/2022 and had a reservation at 13:30, arrived at 13:30 and our table wasn’t ready; we waited for another 15 minutes before we were eventually seated. We ordered a steak and 3 beef burgers, waiter took our order then came back to say that there are no steak left and only one beef burger available because they have been very busy? It’s 13:30 lunch time and you already have no steak or beef burgers? Fine! No worries. We changed our order to one pizza margarita, one chicken burger, one quiche and the one left beef burger. 30 minutes later, the quiche arrive, the pizza and the chicken burger but the waitress comes to say: “I am so sorry but your beef burger was sent to another table, so can I get you something else ?” . At this point I was shocked, honestly even the table next to me were laughing! I then ordered a pizza and my friends already started eating. Eventually we just wanted to leave, the food was so plain and the quiche was so bad my friend didn’t even want to finish. The management and kitchen staff are absolutely a joke, how this place is still operating is beyond my belief and this is not the first time we experienced such a poor service in this place in Kew. The bill was discounted 50% and they took off the bad food from the total cost but the whole experience was so bad

I had an afternoon lunch at the place. Very nice and pleasant place, beautiful design and calming atmosphere. Attentive and quick staff. Tasty food, reasonable prices. I definitely recommend it. They don’t except cash if that’s important to you.

The service at Antipodea has improved so much. Always liked their food, but over the past few years I found the service to be arrogant and dismissive. So much improved. Will be coming back.

I went for dinner on a Saturday night as the place looked reasonably interesting and promising. I however was very disappointed. The main course I ordered was risotto with ox check. Sounds good on paper however the rice was too hard so not coooked nearly...
