Fantastic fish restaurant with a great tasting menu. Had the wine accompanied menu which was very satisfying. Service fantastic with a great setting overlooking the london skies Worth every penny

The scallop, tuna tartare, codfish and turbot were excellent. Service was attentive and yet give your space for privacy. My wife and I enjoyed the food and service for dinner at Angler.

ANGLER RESTAURANT LONDON We were staying at the South Place hotel for our 40th wedding anniversary, and dining in the Angler for their tasting menu. Before I comment on the food, I want to mention Giulia Poggi (the restaurant senior receptionist) who was in contact with me in advance of our stay. She assisted me with details of their wine list and the menu that we would be subject to. She met us on arrival and took us to the restaurant, undertaking to provide us with the table of our choice if at all possible. When we arrived, we were met by the sommelier (John) who was as expected a fountain of knowledge who politely and patiently spent much time with us discussing one of my favourite topics. The food was a carefully curated selection of small dishes that provided different flavours and textures. I do not propose to go through the dishes at length but the tiny, caramelised onion (along with many other ingredients) tart pushed the boundaries somewhat with the abundance of flavours from the first mouthful. I am not a huge fan of cod and was expecting to be somewhat underwhelmed with the Newlyn cod with chicken butter sauce. However, I have never tasted cod where it simply fell apart on cutting. It was moist with a delicate buttery chicken infused sauce. The premier cru Chablis (from Louis Michel) complimented it beautifully, with enough acidity and minerality to cut through the sauce. John’s enthusiasm was a joy to behold. The ‘assiette of desserts’ (my term) was visually stunning; and the array of flavours matched the image. We were then treated to a glass of sauternes from John that provided the icing on the cake! When you have individuals such as Giulia and John looking after you, and when the cooking is so sublime, you know you are in safe hands. Give it a try. CS

I dined here solo. I hadn't been for year and I was really looking forward to visiting again. I certainly wasn't disappointed. Exquisite flavours from beginning to end. Thank you so much. Can't wait to return.

Food a bit overly precious Ambience dead Felt a bit 80s

We went there for a birthday. It is customary to bring something saying happy birthday when we order desserts. Even though they asked whose birthday it was when we were seated, no one brought anything.

3rd visit here and no complaints as usual 10/10 This time for the £85 5 course tasting menu, to which we added the £60 wine pairing which was v good along with a complimentary bottle of champagne.. thank you ! The meal, service and atmosphere were all great Good to see Craig taking over from Gary as Exec Chef .. we had an excellent meal from him at Marcus Wareing, so I’m sure he’ll retain the star !! Great hotel and restaurant !!!

Enjoyed a delightful evening at Anglers to celebrate a friend. The staff were warm and accommodating, the restaurant is very nice and the food is stunning (we had the 5 course menu). I’d highly recommend it.

The Angler had lots of potential to be a great dining experience but sadly did not deliver. I had tuna tartar to start which was good enough but nothing to write home about. My main of turbot quite simply had no seasoning or flavour at all. Friends had the John Dory which, whilst it had more flavour, was I’m told good but nothing more. Compare these dishes with Scott’s for example and these dishes are a pale imitation of great fish dishes. The cheese was excellent and the puddings ( I had plum pudding) were good. The amuse bouche at the start of the meal was the best thing we’ve served.

Great food, service and experience. Everything we had was excellent. We will be back.

Food was very good although surprising the entire tasting menu was served in under one hour, so it felt very rushed. Service was very medicore and very surprising for a one Michelin starred restaurant. The service was a bit brute, the English quality was very poor among the service so there was a high level of miscommunication. Above all, my guest and I had ordered two bottles of wine and only one bottle came. The waitress forgot about the second bottle in the middle of the meal and we had to remind them of the name of the wine. And then the wine did not come for another twenty minutes and we had to reorder the wine. We eventually cancelled the wine because it was served at the end of the meal after desserts were finished. There was no apology. Overall quite disappointed and I will not be visiting again.

Nice food off offer menu. Tuna tatare might have benefitted from some more acidic accompaniments (lime etc) but appetisers nice. main of newlyn cod v good and puds good. Service v uncoordinated (no communication re allergies- we went through them 3x) and they did not like my point about how a tasting menu should show rverything you are going to eat... and no more, esp if the more involves a £30 supplement, or should state for clarity 'optional extra'. Anyway that aside this just feels a bit sterile and at full price is nowhere near anything other than expensive. Wine mark ups are between 3-400%. There are no real views other than other tall buildings around you. There is no real waiting or bar area unless outside so straight to table prob best.

A Michelin starred restaurant that was unable to serve bread to me due to being gluten and lactose intolerant despite booking made days in advance. Also presumably due to afore mentioned intolerances the snack to kick off for me was olives! I have eaten in over 39 Michelin starred restaurants, over a quarter being 2 and 3 stars but NEVER has chef been unable to serve bread until I visited the Angler. Felt like chef could not be bothered last night!

Amazing food, fabulous flavours beautifully presented

Both being retired, we tend to shop around for more affordable dining offers nowadays. However it was hubby’s birthday, so took him here as a treat (via Travelzoo). Was pleasantly surprised that we still qualified for the fab tasting menu - with a lovely glass of English Sparkling wine. Food was delicious & staff were delightful. The place is to have a makeover in late summer, but was still a pleasant enough venue - as was. Big shout out to Pierre & Dinesh (waiting staff); plus Anna (floor manager); Ishita (receptionist) & last, but by no means least, Jess (Mixologist Extraordinaire). Thanks for a great evening!

Outstanding meal. The sommelier paired the wine beautifully and gave us some real surprises. The food was exquisite and service was on point. They deserve their Michelin star. Highly recommend!

Well laid out restaurant , with a cute bar and a great looking terrace (which we didn’t use,in February!). Limited menu with perhaps 4 or 5 first courses and mains. Several amuse bouche. Well cooked food although a bit too nouvelle cuisine. Decent wine list. Perhaps one for a business dinner rather than a romantic night out

The staff could not be more accommodating, Service was excellent and the food sublime, obviously all carefully curated and presented. Canapes, pre-desserts and petits fours provided yet more delicious surprises along the way.

Tasting Menu is an experience not to be missed. Very tasty, refined and inventive. The beef was slightly too rare for my taste but everything else was just perfection.

Superb food, excellent service. Scolops melted in my mouth. John Dory fish had great structure, was perfectly cooked, and tasted delicious.

Lovely staff very professional and friendly. Great terrace and enjoyed drinks before and after lunch. We had the tasting menu which was delicious and we were helped by the sommelier to choose an excellent wine. The restaurant was very quiet but I understand this is normal for a Friday in the City of London.

The food is always exquisite, the service attentive but not suffocating. There wasn’t much ambiance as it was a little empty when we went, but the amazing food makes anything else irrelevant anyway.

This was a beautiful meal shared with my daughter. The staff were beyond lovely and make our experience incredible. Ana and Dinesh were so attentive and helpful. What a discovery! From the warm welcome to the start, it was a succession of pleasant surprises. The food was tasty and exquisite. The service was up to scratch, and we appreciated the attention we received from the team. Special thanks to Anna, Dinesh and John.

Had an another very good business lunch here. Whilst the Angler is on the pricier side and one could make the point that the portion sizes are on the smaller side, diners are provided with a number of additional dishes and “palate cleansers” as compliments of the chef so you tend not to leave hungry. The crab and monkish for me were superb and the service as usual attentive.

Really some of the most delicious, creative and beautifully presented food we've had in London and by far the best seafood taster menu we've had in town. Staff were very keen to please, and a delay on cocktails (about 25 minutes) meant they were free and it was all very elegantly dealt with by their rather fabulous sommelier after a couple of gentle requests. We had the taster menu and it was extraordinary. The carpaccio was some of the most fresh and beautifully tasty I have ever eaten. Everything was completely beautiful, and I realise im beginning to run out of superlatives. I would say go, now! I just want to thank the chef for his incredible art, his attention to detail. All the themes we tasted running through the evening (Apple, brilliantly balanced spices, micro greens bringing beauty and pizzazz, those 7 tiny sorts of mushrooms) were all noticed and deeply enjoyed and understood. You are a star, sir. We will be back when we are feeling less full!! Wine was a crisp and delicious Sauterne, not too bad a price and went with all the dishes in an incredible way.

Unfortunately, the overall experience was disappointing. When I made the reservation I was provided with an option to book the chefs table. I have done this in other places and have enjoyed the experience so thought it would be nice to do again. However, I noticed on the website that it appeared to be a large table so I contacted them via their website. The events team responded stating they had forwarded my email to the restaurant however I never heard anything. Then we arrived we were shown to a table in the main restaurant without any acknowledgement if the change until I mentioned it when we departed. The next unforunate occupancy was that the system had not recorded my husbands coeliac diagnosis and his options were very limited as a result. There was also some confusion as we were told he couldn't have the gluten free bread as it contained soy? This later did appear, although at a different time to my bread and similarly with the snacks part of the menu so it was all a bit disjointed. The fish of the main courses were very nicely cooked and my snacks were tasty. However, the overall experience was a bit disappointing.

Delicious food and friendly relaxed service. We enjoyed a leisurely tasting menu in a nicely spaced restaurant that made chatting and catching up easy. A mix of hotel guests, couples and families dining. We booked via Virgin Experience and got a complimentary bottle of fizz which completed the evening nicely.

Dining at Angler Restaurant in the South Place Hotel was a wonderful experience and truly one of the best we've ever had. The culinary artistry on display is remarkable, with each dish meticulously prepared and bursting with flavor. The seafood, in particular, is exceptional, reflecting both freshness and finesse. The service was impeccable, with the staff being both knowledgeable and attentive, ensuring our every need was met. Went for my partners birthday for a romantic meal. The restaurant was very accommodating about my very restrictive diet. The staff were very friendly and warm. The dining experience was impeccable.

We did go fo a la carte and were not disappointed. Ordered meals were all delicious and were ingerleaved with many complimentary extra dishes. We left after 4 hours delighted, satisfied and full.

I received a RedLetter voucher for a six course tasting meal for Christmas 2023. Included in the voucher pack was a booklet outlining the different restaurants in which the voucher could be redeemed. We decided to book a six course tasting meal at the Angler in London. Prior to attending, we booked through the central booking centre and it was confirmed that this restaurant takes RedLetter vouchers. On the day of the booking, we travelled an hour to reach the restaurant and were told that the voucher was not valid. We explained that we had travelled a long way to get to the restaurant but they did not seem bothered and told us that it was simply a problem with the website that they were not able to address there and then. They told us they were not able to address the problem until Monday when the financial team were back in work. Obviously, this was an extremely disappointing experience. We were really looking forward to our tasting menu experience and wasted two hours travelling to and from the venue. The restaurant were completely unhelpful and asked us to sort the problem out ourselves by calling RedLetter days on Monday. Myself and my husband are both hospital doctors and do not have a lot of free time to waste travelling to restaurants to get turned away. This was extremely poor service from both RedLetter days and the Angler Restaurant

In my top three favourite restaurants in London. The tasting menu is always amazing, matched by great service in a calm and elegant setting. I recommend it to everyone I know.

There were only 3 tables occupied in the restaurant when we were there in a Friday lunch. The food was excellent, but tiny....yes there were palate cleansers and amuse bouche but the plates themselves....small!! A definite experience though

Where to start re this disappointing event? So not the first time there but I think it will be the last! There are three areas of concern 1/ Food It is clear as in all Restaurants cost pressures are biting into food but to visit and enjoy the Tasting menu but still leave hungry as dishes were reduced is baffling. 2/ Wine totally overpriced and not worth the price, just poor! 3/ a service charge of £60 for two people, for what?........£60 ! I would love to have left with the feeling of wow I had from previous visits but this definitely was anything but wow!

Three friends enjoyed the delicious tasting menu. We met earlier for fizz in the bar which was perfect then went through to the spacious window table. Service was perfect, right down to the lovely lady who kept topping up our water glasses with chilled tap water throughout the evening! The one suggestion is to improve the range of wines and prices. With only a handful of bottles under the £100 mark you do feel a bit pressurised. I eat at D& D regularly so i know as well as great fine wines they could include a selection of more affordable wines - similar to Coq dArgent wine list for example. Otherwise a great evening, great setting and fabulous service!!

Excellent food and service - needs more people to come and enjoy it!

Having eaten at a number of high end restaurants around London, my wife and I were looking forward to eat at Angler as being a Michelin starred restaurant with a seafood focus. Whilst we had an ok experience, we left underwhelmed, as with other reviews, the restaurant lacked atmosphere and the food lacked depth and flavour. We went for the tasting menu and whilst some of the dishes (like the prawn) was sublime, others missed the mark. The deserts were really poor quality for the price being paid e.g. white chocolate tart the separates from it's cardboardy base as you eat it However the the item that really let the restaurant down was the service - I would hope the restaurant really looks this aspect as a matter of priority - whilst all of the staff was nice, they constantly seemed to be on the verge of chaos - we were served dishes without explanations being given - only to ask someone else to explain. Additionally when my wife went to the toilet, the decided to serve us the next course - this is despite asking the waiting staff where the loo was. We went for the 2pm sitting, which ran until 4 o clock, at which point staff were clearing and preparing for service for the next sitting (presumably) - nothing like spending £300+ on a meal and being made to feel unwanted. Whilst we are glad we tried it, we won't be revisiting - as an example we ate a five fields a month earlier which we will definitely be returning to, as it felt a treat - Angler just didn't.

Really nice food but overall experience was massively let down by Pierre who was sullen and rude. Our bill had three incorrect items on it which weren’t ours but when we complained he seemed very unhappy and never apologised. Unfortunately he was also on the desk when we left and didn’t say a word when we asked for our coats, just looked like it was beneath him. Don’t work in the service industry if you don’t want to be polite to people! His bad attitude tarnished our experience and my husband’s birthday

Went on a weekday , week before Christmas and it wasn't very busy, yet was seated right next to another table of 2, even though most of the tables where empty. Overall ambiance was quiet and has a smart/semi formal vibe to it, probably good for business dinners/dates. Opted to take two tasting menus at 155 each which seemed abit pricey at a 1 star designation, but thought if the food is good then worth it. Servers were attentive and polite but they seemed lacking in confidence when announcing dishes and one of the descriptions of the dish was inaccurate. Didn't seemed as refined as other Michelin stars I've been to. Food wise, individual elements were very well cooked but most of the courses didn't seem to have coherence and/or didn't really work. For example the venison, whilst cooked perfectly, had a sauce without much punch to it accompanying it and also had a barbecued pear and a kebab. Whilst these elements individually tasted good they didn't seem to link together in one dish (pear too sweet to match the venison). The best and only memorable dish i'd recommend was the langoustine, this was cooked to perfection and the sauce was delicious. The sea bass tartar and crab salad were good but not exceptional and perhaps slightly lacked on flavour. The signature cod was well cooked but once again the sauce had little to no flavour and there was just a drizzle of it on the plate. Squid was also on the plate but it didn't link well to the cod and/or sauce and felt abit like a random accompaniment. Desserts were okay and of the two the cardamon ice cream was definitely the better (gianduja chocolate cake was other). The petit fours were the only thing which i would definitely not eat again, the chocolate filling was excessively sweet. At this price point, I would not try it again against other Michelin star restaurants or be able to recommend it.

Food was excellent and the service was good - however the ambience was rather lacking and felt a bit dull, which detracted from the fantastic food offering.

We had the tasting menu and enjoyed every moment. The amuse bouches were heavenly and each of the three starters were divine - sea-bass tartare, followed by Devon flaked crab and the mouthwatering langoustine with parmesan gnocchi. Two fish mains, monkfish and turbot, the turbot was the star main for me - beautifully cooked with delicate flavours to accompany the fish. Puddings did not disappoint either. Overall a really lovely experience with excellent service throughout. Special thanks to Spiros for his warm hospitality. We will be back!

Lovely food in parts, odd in others. Too much bread and water, not a vegetable in sight with the mains. Great starters, and chefs bits and pieces, but we felt let down by the mains. Cheese was nice enough but no choice. Waited 45 mins to be told ‘there are only two soufflés’?! Despite being the only table in the end, I still had to waive down service on two occasions. Got drinks wrong.

Everything about the Angler is absolutely brilliant and spot on. The food is outstanding and cooked to perfection. Full of flavours and textures but not overpowering or heavy. The service is impeccable. Attentive and on point but not overbearing or interfering. The decor and ambience is great. Not stuffy or feeling like you have to speak in hushed tones.

Superb!! The set festive menu absolutely delicious, service was great, ambience could have been a little more festive in the restaurant but will definitely be back. Made my annual festive lunch with my mum very memorable

The set lunch menu felt very good value for a Michelin restaurant. Beautifully prepared and enough courses to feel comfortably full. The staff were all very welcoming and extremely professional but not intimidating. The attention to detail was also very good.

I had booked the Angler for myself and my wife for our anniversary. We both had the tasting menu, and the chef modified the relevant dishes to suit my pescetarian diet. I was actually treated to the head chefs specialty cod dish which was absolutely amazing. Super helpful and friendly staff, amazing setting, and incredible food. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a special culinary experience in London.

Really excellent service and food, the lunch menu was tremendous value. The wine was great but a couple of more slightly cheaper options (£50-65 bracket) would be great.

The food was outstanding at Angler, we’re still thinking about the dishes days later! Such creativity, quality and balance through the tasting menu. The service was also great. Can’t wait to return!

Every year we go to London for a "foodie" break, eating out at Michelin-starred restaurants and of the four we went to, the Angler came very much last. We were seated in a quieter part of the restaurant with just another couple at the next table so felt removed from the atmosphere of the other diners. This also resulted in us being rather forgotten about for most of the time. We waited for ages just for the drinks menu to order an aperitif, and when it came it was just a very limited selection on one side - we were then given the menus and ordered the tasting menu - the food started to arrive before we were served our pre-dinner drinks. We also had to ask for a wine list. The courses arrived rather haphazardly - at first the canapes and first courses came so quickly we felt as if they were trying to rush us through, then there were long waits. The food didn't have the "wow" factor the other restaurants had, in fact the cod smelled and tasted very fishy, which implied it was not the freshest. Both the waitress and the sommelier were inattentive with us being left with empty water glasses and having to refill our wine glasses ourselves, which shouldn't be the case with a restaurant of this standard. All in all a disappointing evening - I should have refused to pay the service charge but didn't want to make a fuss.

Excellent seafood tasting menu as well as friendly staff.

Poor service; we were seated and then ignored - took ages just to get a drink; then had to ask for the wine list. First of all courses came too quickly and before our drinks arrived, so we felt rushed, then long waits between courses; forgotten by sommelier and had to fill our own wine glasses, which is not something you expect in a Michelin starred restaurant. The cod smelled very fishy which generally means it wasn't as fresh as it could have been. Not the standard we had been expecting especially compared to other restaurants we have been to.

Great food, great menu and great location. Had a client meeting and the set lunch menu was great value and delicious.

Elegant food with precise service in a polished environment.

This was our second visit to Angler, the first being immediately before lockdown when the circumstances were a little bit unreal. We had the tasting menu, and whilst we were worried about the cost we decided that the best is worth paying for and it was just that. The flavours and the tastes were indescribable with Caroline claiming that each course was her favourite in Portuguese to our waiter who came from that country but still spoke perfect English so that I didn't feel left out. A fantastic evening

Food and wine pairings were outstanding. Although the staff were helpful and polite (the sommelier especially was great), the overall experience was let down a bit by the service - felt quite understaffed, particularly at the beginning of the evening when we were waiting for a considerable amount of time for our initial drinks to arrive (the appetisers arrived before our drinks). Other small things like the wine glasses all having lint/dust on the outside of the glass, presumably from being polished with an overly damp cloth. Ambience was fair - didn’t feel like a particularly intimate dining room. We were initially sat at a table closest to the entrance which was less than ideal as it was a main thoroughfare for waiters, and for guests arriving/leaving with the elevators dinging regularly. Our second table was an improvement, but they really need to get soft-close wine fridges.. the regular banging of the fridge doors was a bit disruptive to the experience. Overall an enjoyable evening, but didn’t feel up to the standard of other Michelin-level restaurants.

Wonderful food, beautifully served. My only complaint and one which did not permit me to award 'Outstanding' at the beginning of the survey, concerned the excessive exposure to heat and to sunlight, despite there being mechanical shades. The staff either wouldn't or couldn't lower them for us. As a result, we were uncomfortably hot and/or dazzled for much of our meal. I would need reassurance on this point before contemplating a further visit.

Grand indeed. Gorgeous food with several surprise and complimentary plates between courses. All delicious so hats off and genuflections in the presence chef and team. Normally the wine list in similar establishments is the killer, price wise, but a gentle and learned touch from Head Sommelier, Daniele Arcangeli ensured affordability and gorgeous wines! Very plate that arrived was greeted by our Australian guest with YUM, BEAUUUTIFUL! Have booked another table this month. Yum!

Our first visit to Angler and it was exquisite. Incredibly professional service but still keeping some warmth and personality. It really complemented the incredible food. The wine pairing was absolutely perfectly executed and the whole experience was very enjoyable. Highly recommend the cuttlefish bolognaise and the choc torte dessert was one of the best desserts I’ve ever had. Wonderful thank you.

Honestly lovely experience. Went twice in one week and will return when back in town. The food was fantastic, our waiter was phenomenal and service was excellent. 10/10 would recommend!

Food as usual really good, but the cod dish was extremely salty. It was not my first time in the place, and I really used to enjoy coming here, but this time wasn't great.

We have eaten here many times and it has always been good. This time it was appalling. Service was bordering on rude. Food over seasoned and strong sauces overwhelmed the excellent fresh seafood. Bread plates not cleared and crumbs left all over the table throughout. Glasses left empty / unfilled for up to 15 minutes. No apology, just an excuse. Very grudging and unfriendly agreement to adapt dishes to gluten free, for our guest, which made the whole experience hard work. Will not be returning.

For seafood lovers, look no further. All menu options are faultless, but their John Dory is a rare find and simply delicious. The ambiance feels more on the formal/business side, but matched by the highly efficient service. Not to be missed.

As per my previous review it was so good we went twice! On my list of favourite restaurants in London :) will definitely return!
