A cool bar and great staff - sadly i cannot think of anything to make it stand out as a must go spot. You're on a rooftop so there is some good sights, however nothing that makes you say 'wow.' The prices are a bit high, which i think it because of the location. The balcony does have limited seating which means you may have to stand a bit until a table opens up. The staff was very nice, helpful, and did make good cocktails. Worth checking - but don't fret if you miss it.

We opted to pre book from the menu and this worked really well for us as we had a relaxed meal before the show. You are able to choose courses before the and in the interval. This works well if you do starter and main before the show as the interval is 25 mins. Food was to die for, service could not be faulted either. It was pretty expensive, but for a special occasion it was worth every penny!

Very occasional visitors to ROH we again ate at The Amphitheatre Restaurant and this proved even better on this occasion given the length of Die Meistersinger. The food was very good but the star of the evening was the service in general and our waiter in particular. It felt (and appeared) that nothing was too much trouble with the service crisp and efficient but very friendly. Juggling the undoubtedly demanding clientele, timings of the food spread out over intervals etc. was done skilfully and cheerfully. And given the cost of everything else at ROH, the price was not unreasonable.Absolutely the best option if you are looking at a special evening out.

This place is a great way to eat before and in the intervals of the opera performance at the Royal Opera House. You order your meal in advance and arrive in good time, some one and half hours before the start. You can choose when you eat the minimum two courses you have ordered. Great choice of dishes and drinks. The cooking is exceptional. The portions are just right for light eaters but you can top it up with extra sides. Inevitably if you wait with your main till an interval you might be pushed for time. Best is to have starter and main before the show and have your desert and coffee in the interval. This means you have the comfort of a table whilst others get crushed in the bars trying to knock back a drink. They will sell you a programme when you arrive and can read it at your leisure and in comfort. I am not sure where to dine after the show in Covent Garden since the demise of Luigi's. This is a great option also since you eat early and can make your escape from the crowds after the show without going hungry.

We have visited the ROH on a number of occasions but never eaten at the two restaurants available. The system is you pre-book the food and you can eat before the production and during the intervals. A good idea albeit quite a long walk from the stalls to the restaurant during the interval.I wasn't expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised. The food was quite good - not fine dining but adequate. This is catering within the ROH rather than a restaurant within the ROH - there is a distinction. The service is rather astonishing - very friendly and slick. How they cover everyone during the limited time is a thing to marvel at.Would I go again - yes, as it makes the evening more special.

Three courses of perfectly edible food, but not what I would class as restaurant standard, really bistro at best. Starter of chicory red onion and blue cheese was pleasant but pretty underwhelming (these sorts of salads can easily be fabulous) in terms of taste and presentation. The main of rib eye and spinach was a similarly disappointing, a dollop of spinach with a steak plonked on top. The steak was a nice cut and cooked well enough, but not particularly flavoursome unfortunately. Side of chips on the other hand were lovely, skin on, nicely seasoned.Fruit plate to finish was a slightly tired plate of wafer thinly sliced pineapple, melon and orange with a few pomegranate seeds scattered on top, no real effort to present this to restaurant standard, but tasted OK.Good coffee and lovely petits fours (truffle, florentine, fudge) if you have a sweet tooth.I had the ROH house red in the Balconies restaurant (a lovely Languedoc) and ordered what I thought would be the same again, but it turns out that the ROH house wine is different in the Balconies and Amphitheatre restaurants (so that's not really what I'd call a house wine). This house red was a rather nasty Spanish red which I couldn't recommend - I switched to the Cotes du Rhone for a second glass which was much better.Service was great. I recently found the Balconies restaurant rather understaffed, but not so in the Amphitheatre plenty of super efficient waiting staff were very attentive. To summarise the evening, a very memorable opera with very forgettable food.

A couple of days after Christmas my family lunched here, including our granddaughter on her first-ever ballet the Nutcracker at the Royal Opera House. We had hors d'oeuvres and main courses before the ballet and came back for pudding and coffee during the interval at the same table which is reserved - a very good arrangement. They offer 2- and 3-course menus for adults and a children's menu too. Our starters of smoked salmon and chicken liver pate were good, followed by steak, fish pie and duck which were well cooked too. The childrens' menu was eaten up and the ices in the interval were delicious. Courteous and attentive waiters did a very good job. Not cheap, but the most convenient way to dine at the House. We all enjoyed ourselves. Recommended.

When I got a ticket to La Filles mal gardee I thought I would treat myself and do the full experience, and booked a table for before the ballet. I chose this restaurant as I liked the menu. Me, a planner, also liked that I received an email asking if I would preorder my meal before my stay, so I did, opting for my starter and main before the ballet and my desert during the interval.Upon arrival I was taken to my table, was asked what I liked to drink and my starter was out quickly, was also given some bread and butter. All dishes looked great and tasted good. The waiters were also attentive, and when it was time to head to the ballet I could keep my totebag(had done a tour which required sturdy shoes beforehand, so switched to ballerina's before heading into the opera house, and put the shoes in my bag) under my table. I also paid then.During interval I headed back to my table were my desert was already waiting for me(and looked amazing), loved the taste of that. We're not sure why this restaurant has attracted some recent negative reviews. We've been using it each time we visit the Opera House and have never had any complaints. The setting and decor makes it preferable to the more expensive Balcony restaurant and the Crush Room is like dining in a corridor. In our experience the service has always been excellent, and have speedily served us when we were rather late. This Restaurant does not warrant the 4 stars it gets on Trip Advisor!Had the 3 courses for £35 Dinner Menu; which also has supplements and charges £4 for side dishes; The food was not up to much at all !You pre-order your meal if you are seeing the Opera or Ballet, and you have your table all evening, This is no justification for serving below par food! They do this because of course they can get away with it !The starter of "cured salmon, tartare sauce & charlotte potatoes" consisted of some cured salmon which looked as if it had been on the plate for ages, - some dots of tartare sauce - and 5 squares of potato half a centimetre square dotted around the plate -whaaaaaaaaat -how much does a bag of potatoes cost for goodness sake!!!Followed by fish & chips. The batter was soggy and the chips luke warm.( go to Kennedy's Goswell Road,EC1 for super fish & chips, it has 4.5 well earned trip advisor stars)The bill for 4 was just under £200 including 2 bottles of perfectly chilled house wine. The Restaurant ambiance is excellent and our waiter Carlos was very good indeed.Nevertheless, the food was very poor and certainly does not encourage you to return. You are better off putting that money in to buying a better seat, from which to watch the performance.I also noticed the food at the Amphitheatre Bar looked very poor valueFor example,8 small smoked salmon sandwiches on a cling filmed plate for £12.50!

We were alway slightly apprehensive having to order a meal 3 days prior to our visit, however, this seemed to be the norm (we later found out this is not always the case). On arrival, the waiters were friendly enough but with an air of indifference. The whole experience was one of a fast food restaurant with a high price tag. The canapés were good. From then on it went downhill, with a very small starter, which made us laugh, the mains, however, we ate very little, as the meal tasted of food which had been prepared much earlier and left hanging around. It was really not acceptable, the only reason we didn't complain, the Ballet was about to start. At no time did the waiter ask us if anything was wrong with the meal, even though two virtually full plates of food were returned. The desserts and tea in the interval were tasty but again very small. The dessert on the web -site which looked wonderful and supposedly created for the performance proved non-existent. ( A warning - if you are a slow walker or need a comfort break it's best not to consider this option, as there is very little time once seated to eat/drink, then return to the performance, it's just not relaxing). This restaurant is not value, even for The Opera House, which is a shame.

This restaurant is an oasis of calm in the ROH which is full to bursting with people especially while the alterations are taking place. You are not made to feel rushed in spite of the fact that everyone arrives at the same time mostly expecting to eat their first and main course before the performance starts. My steak was tender, cooked to perfection and full of flavour. The economics of running this restaurant are surely different because for obvious reasons the same diners occupy the tables throughout the evening with no new customers walking in off the street and some people may just have two starters and no dessert. Champagne is not more expensive than in many London restaurants. Yes it costs a lot to eat here but it is worth it.

The service here is excellent. The food was poor. A thin, watery gaspacho without any of the "bits" that a true Spanish gaspacho has, like small pieces of fresh vegetables or croutons. A cod dish where the cod was good but the accompaniments frankly ludicrous. Five different grains that made the whole dish dry and tasteless. Grains need a jus (or gravy) - someone please tell the chef. The champagne baba was also tasteless. A baba needs a strong alcohol to go with it, not a champagne where you could hardly taste the flavour. However, as I said, the service was excellent and, my compliments to the Maitre D', she took the price of the cod with grains off my bill without my even asking. The chefs here need to talk to the Paul Hamblyn chefs. Last time we had a really good meal there.

Coming to a performance at the Opera House is a bit of a special occasion, and coming to the Amphitheatre Restaurant makes it even more so!The staff are attentive and friendly, and the food is always reliably good. The room is lovely and spacious, with gorgeous photos relating to ballet all round it.We always order our food in advance (the best way) and email any special requests on to them (which are always noted). Our most recent meal was as good as before. We had the Beetroot soup and the Crispy Duck salad as starters (my soup was excellent, with lots of bits of beetroot and celery in it). We had the 'fish and chips' as our main course - the haddock was beautifully cooked in a nice crispy batter, and the chips were good too. We both had the Spiced Pecan Parfait for dessert during the first interval, and it was very nice too.It is perhaps not the cheapest option for a pre-performance meal in the immediate vicinity, but it is hard to beat from the point of view of atmosphere and convenience, and being able to have your dessert and coffee (or just come back and sit at your table) during the interval is a particularly nice little luxury.

I'm all for experimentation. Adding horseradish to the Jerusalem Artichoke soup was a touch of genius. Turning a rub baba into a champagne baba, however, didn't work. The service, as ever, was excellent. But do go back to good old fashioned rub baba. The champagne baba had no flavour.

We love eating here. The pre-order system works so well and the food is delicious. It's a great advantage to have a table booked in the restaurant for the evening so each interval is a chance to eat and discuss the last Act. The staff are really friendly and professional. We always feel as if we've been on a mini-holiday after an evening at the opera combined with dinner here. I highly recommend it.

You pre-order your food for the restaurant, so upon arrival at our table, there was our bottle of wine and water. They then confirmed our pre-order. I reminded them of the wheat allergy (they had been great on email sorting it all out) and away we went. He had a salmon mousse pate, with melba toast of rye bread, and I had a confit duck salad with cornichons and a light salad. Then he had the steak with bernaise sauce and a side of chips, and I had the calves liver ’n bacon with mashed potatoes and a side of spinach. It was all cooked perfectly and went down quickly. Then it was off to our seats for Act I. On return from Act I, my cheese was waiting as was his bitter chocolate fondant, which entertainingly had a few marshmallows sprinkled on the plate. I had my oat cakes with me to have with my cheese, which was very lucky because they brought out the wheat free bread and I am sorry to say it looked the worse I have ever seen. I couldn’t even bring myself to try it. Might be worth considering a different brand, or making their own! Then off to Act II. Prior to Act III we returned to the restaurant for our coffees/teas. I had a drunken baileys coffee and he had an earl grey tea. Upon arrival we were introduced to our waiter, by name, and I assumed he would be with us for the duration. We never saw him again! Most unusual. Why go to all that effort to not make use of the rapport you just built up! It is not a cheap spot to dine by any means, but overall I felt it was worth it. Being on the same floor as our seats was hugely advantageous.

Whenever we visit the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, we also book to dine in the restaurant. The food is delicious, great atmosphere and a lovely view overlooking Covent Garden. The best thing about it is that you can eat your starter and main meal, then go to see the ballet/opera and return at interval to have your coffee and dessert. Makes such a special evening and also means that you do not have to try and rush a meal anywhere else. You have the table for the whole evening. A special way to enjoy the Royal Opera House. So much going on, that it is lovely to enjoy the spectacle of it all. Diners are always well dressed and the ladies especially look beautiful. All in all, a fabulous evening out. We are there again in April 2016.A must!

Ate here before a recent visit to the opera. Service was excellent but don't come hungry. Starters and main courses were very small. I had delicious liver as my main but it consisted of one slice only on one spoon of mash and vegetables. Fish pie was served in a soup bowl with no side. The one redeeming element was the dessert course and in particular the cheese. There was a big push to sell bottled water with two bottles on all tables but once we asked for tap water that was supplied and replenished immediately.

It is very enjoyable to to up to the Amphitheatre Restaurant for a meal before a performance at the Opera House. The food is good, and the service excellent, with knowlegable and friendly staff. For sheer convenience it is unbeatable, and the atmosphere is very pleasant and welcoming. The menu changes regularly, and is always interesting (you pre-order online). Our starters (Cerliac Soup with Tarragon creme fraiche, and Dressed Dorset Crab) were very tasty - the soup was particularly delicate and good. We both had the Roast Cod as our main course, and it was perfectly cooked - moist but not too underdone. We had originally ordered our dessert to be served in the first interval, but decided to have it before the performance and this change to our plan was no problem for the staff. The Bitter Chocolate Tart was very good and the perfect choice for a chocoholic! The Poached Pear was not quite as good, and could have done with a sauce of some description to lift it.All in all, I would highly recommend the Amphitheatre Restaurant for a meal before a performance at the Opera House - we will certainly be going again!

The Balconies Restaurant at this wonderful theatre is rather expensive so we only use it on very special occasions.Usually when attending a performance we take refreshment elsewhere in the Covent Garden area but occasionally it's nice to 'eat in' and the Amphitheatre Restaurant at the higher level of the theatre is fine. You get quality rather than quantity here and when the weather is pleasant enough can even sit at a table on the outside balcony with views over the square and historic market buildings of Covent Garden.I believe the restaurant is also available to members of the public at certain times.

Just seen a fantastic performance of La Traviatta at the ROH, and we decided to have a 3 course dinner pre-performance+ intervals. This is perfectly doable, but do plan ahead. We decided to have champagne and starter pre performance, 30 minutes is perfectly adequate for this. We took our main at the first interval which was 40 mins, again good time allowance, and our desert in the 2nd interval of 30 mins. It all worked out well, however we did find that having a 3 course was just too filling as we are sitting down in total for quite a lengthy evening. Next time we would probably stick to 2 courses. Restaurant was very well run in anticipation of timing, and your pre-orders really helps the efficiency of the restaurant staff, including wine selection in advance. food was great, and ambience was also really nice inside the restaurant.

There are a number of restaurants to choose from at The Royal Opera House, but if you don't mind sitting out in an open area and are on a budget, this one is a good choice. The low point of an otherwise enjoyable evening. While I appreciate the constraints pre opera dining will impose, and would expect this setting to be expensive, this was a poor meal (quality and value) even when these factors taken into account. Starters fine. I returned my main. Massive difference between portion sizes of fish mains being served. Desserts underwhelming. On the plus side staff were most attentive but surely the Royal Opera House can do better than this? I will be generous and assume this was an off night but would only return for the convenience of pre opera on site dining, and even then with some trepidation.

It's been a while since the better half and I last dined here and I'm delighted to report that it's still a great restaurant. We arrived only half an hour ahead of curtain up for a performance of Cav/Pag and had not booked a table in advance due to the restaurant being full. We thought we would try our luck and see if we could get a late table. Mohammed the restaurant maître d greeted us as old friends and quickly set a recently vacated table for us. We ordered starters of game terrine and cured salmon with a delicious bottle of Pouilly Fuisse all arriving at great speed to ensure we didn't need to rush before the performance began. They even managed to accompany our starters with some very nice warm gluten free bread rolls. We returned at the interval to finish our wine with two main courses of roast chicken supreme with a lemon gravy, top notch. After a frantic two and a half hour journey in the car we were soothed with a delightful lunch and very special service ahead of the opera performance and it was the icing on the cake. As for its sister Balconies Restaurant at the Royal Opera the quality and service has for us always been first class. Dining at the ROH pre performance / intervals always elevates the enjoyment of visit to the opera. Both ROH venues are great restaurants and worthy of a visit in their own right.

The menu looks good. Wild pigeon terrine followed by bream with potted shrimps and fennel were my choices. I didn't like either. The terrine was too strong, the bream tasteless. (In fairness, my wife did not dislike her vegetarian starter and positively liked her linguini). The wine list was interesting. The service was exceptionally good. The atmosphere pleasant. The price highish. We'll be back. We have little choice if we are going to the opera but I do wish the chef would be less imaginative with his dishes, and just cook simple ones with lots of flavour.

As we were going to the evening opera performance we thought it appropriate to eat in the Royal Opera House as the table is yours for the evening. It was a good decision and we were not disappointed with our menu selection. We started with a champagne cocktail and delicious canapes, followed by the most superb white onion soup with truffle oil and a duck egg on a type of large toasted crouton - it was unusual but fantastic! Our main was Aberdeen Angus steak - medium rare - which was cooked to perfection. Glass of red to complement this. We then went into the first performance, Cavalleria Rusticana. During the interval we returned to find our glass of champagne & pudding waiting for us at our table which was followed by Espresso coffee and of course the bill which was already on the table - the service was excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed the meal and were then able to relax and enjoy the second performance, Pagliacci ! All in all a great evening to remember.

The Amphitheatre is a lovely place to have a pre-performance dinner knowing you’re there at the ROH and don’t have to stress about getting to your seats on time. The table is yours for the duration of the evening which is great. We had starters and mains before the first Act and then pudding and cheese in the intervals. The staff have everything ready for when you return and you can finish your wine then so it’s super stress free. The service was fantastic the evening we went – charming friendly waiters and one even overheard us saying we hadn’t bought a programme so he offered to go and buy one downstairs for us and bring it up to our table. Lovely. The food was very good as well. There is a limited but clever menu allowing the restaurant to serve it efficiently so you have plenty of time to enjoy the meal. The smoked salmon starter was delicious as was the apple and parsnip soup and the mushroom linguini was heaven. The only piece of advice I’d offer is if you know you’ll want to dine there, try and get seats on the correct side of the ROH… our seats couldn’t have been further away from the Amphitheatre restaurant so we had a bit of a walk each time there was an interval but apart form that it was a perfect evening, thank you!

We have eaten here a few times and generally found it a good experience. When you eat here when attending an ROH performance, your table is yours for the evening, and makes for a good dining experience spread over the evening. Depending on the number of intervals in the performance you are seeing you can have your starter or starter and main courses before the performance, and desert and coffee in the interval, or starter before, main in the first interval, desert and coffee in the second etc. It is up to you, and that is great. Service is efficient and friendly. The environment is nice. However yesterday was disappointing. My crab starter was rather dry and tasteless. Probably frozen crab which cannot have anything like the flavour of fresh. Then my main of game pie was a real miss. Whatever the game was had been finely minced into a homogenous paste which for me completely misses the point of a game pie. My wife loved her starter of ricotta and what seemed to be a carpaccio of marinated butternut squash with toasted pine nuts, but her steak was very overcooked. Ordered medium rare but looked well done. Before a performance you don't really have time to send something back without risking missing the performance, so she lived with it. Deserts were ok, but overall at £150 including a bottle of wine it seemed overpriced for the quality of the food. Hopefully just a bad night, rather than a general deterioration in the quality of the food.

Fine dining before an evening at the opera or the ballet. An excellent idea, one may settle on a satisfactory menu before the event, choose the wine and aperitifs and forego the usual hassle of ordering at the time of booking the table. Its a splendid venue, light, modern, airy, well spaced tables, well organised reception, excellent service - a pity that the food doesn't achieve these high standards. The lobster was delicious, but the arborio rice should have been al dente, not leaving gritty bits in the mouth. The pomme boulangere was very salty and the salad had no dressing - a besetting sin in many English restaurants. A vinaigrette is the simplest sauce to make in the whole world - it only requires good olive oil, vinegar and a bit of salt and pepper. I cannot understand why so many restaurants fail in this simplest of preparations.

I have used this venue for years and I am somewhat chary about mentioning it. Why? Because it is so under-utilised and so good! The restaurant and bar is deep in the Royal Opera House. The setting is wonderful. Outside the actual restaurant, which is elegant and serves delicious food, is the Amphitheatre Bar. Here you can sit inside (and overlook the dramatic Paul Hamlyn glass vaulted hall) or sit outside under a covered verandah with great views over the Jubilee Market in Covent Garden. On a warm day it feels as though you are in Italy. The Amphitheatre Bar serves snacks, cakes and excellent coffee. We go here quite often because it works well with the opera or ballet. Ordering online makes good sense and when you do ask for a window or terrace seat. In summer it is lovely being above the Market. The middle of the restaurant is busy so if you do not get the terrace ask for a table at the side. The food and wine are good but they do not come cheap. A slight criticism of last week's visit is that the head waiter suggested the tip I should put on my card. We had a bottle of wine near £50 so tipping 10% on everything as he requested was high! But they get you through in time to keep up with the performance and the area is peaceful compared to the bars, etc.; compared to the restaurant over looking the Floral Hall this is good value. We usually grab an ice cream from the foyer vendor as we go back after the interval because they are not to be missed.

Don't get me wrong. We really enjoyed our meal, the overture was a gorgeous pear champagne cocktail, followed by a melt-in-your-mouth carpaccio de boeuf, which melted on contact, rather like a Communion Host. The main of Sole Meuniere was nice, rounded off by a nice dessert. But it's just that, when you have done the Balconies, in my opinion you are spoiled for the others. Our second successive anniversary opera and meal visit. Last year we ate in the Balconies Restaurant, which was superb, but this year we tried the Amphitheatre restaurant as it was closer to our seats and so less of a rush at the interval. Unfortunately the management of the restaurant and the service left a lot to be desired. Upon arrival we ordered our pre-meal drinks, and our meal, and then waited and waited for our drinks when the meal appeared instead. Or at least part of it. We had to ask where our drinks were, and these duly appeared a few minutes later. We then had to get the waiter back and ask where the accompaniments to our meal were. These arrived a further few minutes later, by which time our meals had begun to go cold. We asked what had happened and the waiter said it was so chaotic in the restaurant with so many people eating in one sitting before the start of the opera. Yet that is exactly what the restaurant caters for and they do it night after night! The food was good (though nothing like the quality of the Balconies Restaurant), and the waiter very friendly, but I do not think it is reasonable to deliver a service as poor as this in such a setting. I will be writing separately to the ROH but I sincerely hope they will take action to ensure others do not experience the problems we had.

Booked a table here for Valentines Night. Arrived on time (5.30) to find we had to queue for 15 minutes before being shown to our table! Sat at our table for 15 minutes before the Maitre D noticed we hadn't been served and came and took our drinks order and passed it to the waiter. Another 10 minute wait followed. We received our drinks and waited for our order to be taken. Fifteen minutes - and nothing. Once again the Maitre D came to the rescue and took our order. The result - rushed our food and just finished the main before the order to take our seats came over the tannoy. In between courses, the waiters attempted to bring us other peoples drinks and starters, and gave our drinks to others, pure comedy. The food? Starter of crab had little taste and no detectable seasoning. It came with the lovely bonus of small bits of shell. Main of Sole was much better - but once again - seasoning non existent. That experience cost us £214 excluding service. My advice, book yourself and restaurant nearby and save at least £100, get better food and vastly superior service. The very considerable plus points are that 1.) you have the table all evening and can take courses before the performance and during the interval(s), much better than having to fight your way to the bar, 2.) the food is good, especially given the speed with which they have to turn things around and 3.) the waiting staff were charming and efficient. But what a disappointment our table was and in fact, the atmosphere overall. The layout of the restaurant used up every inch of space - fair enough that they want to make good use of the space, but not when it means that diners are squeezed into every uncomfortable and unattractive nook and cranny, and especially not when dinner and drinks for two costs £250+. Unfortunately this spoiled an otherwise special occasion.
