When we arrived after our 10hr drive from Lancashire ready for our week ahead, we were made very welcome, offered a drink as we booked in for our rooms. Our evening meal was first class, with Henry’s drunken rum cake, which got top marks for taste. Our fishing trip was organised by the hotel with all permits and boats covered. We caught the weather right for the loch and enjoyed fishing. We will return.

Stayed here whilst doing the NC500 route, it was a bit of a detour, as it was the only option available. So pleased we found it as this was a lovely hotel, in the middle of nowhere in beautiful surroundings. Morag could not have been more helpful or welcoming. Hope to go back again sometime. And the food was great too!

We had a lovely one night stay on a tour of the north west. The hotel is quiet and cosy. Our room was large, smart and comfortable. Huge bed, nice pillows. There’s a nice lounge area and quirky bar. The restaurant food was delicious and well presented. I had a tasty hake dish and my husband enjoyed a well cooked pink duck. The breakfast was excellent. I had haddock and he had a huge full Scottish.

We went here for an evening meal and drink. Was disappointed with the meal would have expected home cooked chips. Never mind the drink was good and the locals were friendly in the bar area. Usual from speaking to locals hot some good advice about the area and places to visit. Be aware as you have to travel a good distance from this location to eat elsewhere.

Tuesday night is not a party night in Altnaharra. The pub was empty, but we had a good pint at usual prices. The service was quick, but could have been more welcoming. Think they had other customers to attend in the restaurant.

This is a very isolated place with no competition for miles. The staff are good but you get the feeling they could do with a couple more members at least. Food was excellent and the chef conjures up some great dishes - especially the beef which was as good as anything I have had. As several other reviewers have said the place needs a refurb - it has an antique heating system and rooms need brightening up. Just about value for money but marginal.

We booked into the bunk rooms advertised as "LeJog Cabin"- It turns out that they are out the back of the hotel with a view of abandoned dishwashers & washing machines. The room had a v small fan heater in it - The shower room had windows that didn't shut properly and was freezing - The shower was a tepid flow and nothing more. We went to the main bar area for a drink- The bar area was chilly and I asked for the fire to be lit as it was a cold wet miserable night to be told that it could not be lit as the smoke blows into the kitchen!! So many little things not done right add up to a night in hotel I would not recommend in its present state to fellow travellers or cyclists

In the middle of nowhere unless you are hunting, fishing or shooting. The hotel is badly in need of refurbishment. Breakfast average.

Recently dined here whilst staying at The Hotel Whilst I can't complain about the Hotel or the quality of food, what spoiled the whole experience for me and my friends was the incredibly rude girl who checked us in upon arrival and also served our table later that evening. Throughout our stay she was most unwelcoming, unhelpful, discourteous and downright bad mannered and rude. In all may years of travelling all over the world , this is probably the worst experience I've encountered and in my opinion, this girl shouldn't be allowed near front of house by the owners. Good hotel seriously let down by a very bad member of staff

We were 2/3 through a long highland drive, and were well ready for a cuppa. We went into the ghillies bar and rang the bell. Soon a friendly man appeared and suggested we would be more comfortable in the lounge, whomich is lovely and very comfortable. Soon the tea arrived with two packets of walkers biscuits which soon disappeared. We asked if any scones or cake were available. The waitress soon returned saying both scones and strawberry and pineapple loaf could be had. We opted for the latter, which was superb. As was the plentiful supply of tea. The price was very reasonable so I left a tip which I was told would go into the mountain rescue collection. 10/10 from both of us.

Our second time in the hotel in July and the second time we lucked out with sun. Beautiful weather which enabled trips to beaches in nearby Tongue, Talmine and Durness. Nestled amongst breathtaking scenery and wildlife this hotel gives you an insight into a fishing lodge of the last century and is a must for anyone with a hankering for casting a line or 'dapping a dry'. Country house feel with a beautiful dining room, linens and fishing history in art and artifact. Try a local Rockrose G&T in the drawing room while you peruse the menu. Food is unbelievably delicious. Only two choices but seasonal and cooked perfectly, enjoyed loin of venison, sea bass and smoked mackerel with horseradish cream was my favourite. Chef is very talented and a real asset to the hotel. Try to taste some of the local chanterelles- they are amazing. A lovely selection of wines are available. The ghillies who take you fishing are wonderful, full of chat, tall tales and expertise. If you don't fish just spend an hour or two in the ghillies bar in the early evening for stories that will leave you wanting to spend a day on the loch. Service is generally laid back and friendly. However, we were surprised to observe a discussion with one of the waiting staff and some non residents who arrived for dinner which was not how we would have expected to be treated. Sign outside says 'non residents very welcome'. Didn't seem to be the case. Perhaps an opportunity for some staff training?

This a very welcome oasis in a beautiful part of Scotland where the nearest shop is 20 miles away! We were staying at the caravan club site on the loch and had booked 2 evening meals here. We booked ahead as last year we were unable to secure a table for any night during our stay which was very disappointing ! It is predominantly a fishing hotel. The menu has a restricted choice of basically meat or fish but it is all exceptionally well cooked. The staff are friendly and the whole hotel has a lovely intimate atmosphere. Out of the restaurant window I could see deer grazing. Beautiful !

It may be in the middle of nowhere but this is still one of the best meals I've had and in such fantastic surroundings. The 4 courses couldn't be faulted and the steak just melted in your mouth preceded by and amazing seafood chowder. If you're ever in the area I'd recommend booking a meal and the breakfast the following morning was just as good if you're staying at the hotel. A great night's sleep as well in very comfortable bedrooms.

It's a pretty scummy dive bar. (In response to owner's comment - Dive bar isn't necessarily a bad thing, but good for folk to know what they're walking in to. Football, football fans and occasional fights. Other dive bars in Inverness have more atmosphere and soul IMO but it is what it is. It's the kind of place you go to get messy, but stay away of you're in any kind of alternative subculture and don't want to get harassed by Inverness's scummy drunks.)

Visited 3 times in 5 days and probably spent more on coffee than we did on merchandise (and Tiso is an excellent shop by the way). Excellent coffee, lovely cake selection and a truly fantastic full English/Scottish breakfast. Staff were friendly and helpful. View to the Cairngorms outstanding and our doggy companions most welcome.

As someone who has worked in the food and catering industry for years, I find it astonishing that there are recent incredibly negative reviews regarding this restaurant. Our experience was nothing short of 5 stars. The food was exceptional, the quality of the produce, the execution and the presentation. It was a lovely mix of top quality seafood, traditional Scottish fare, with some Asian touches thrown in and it worked a treat. Service was bang on. Not over the top, just well timed, very professional and friendly. The restaurant itself is gorgeous. Housed in a lovely old stone building - a relaxing, calm atmosphere that hums along nicely, lovely location and outlook. My husband and I (both fish and meat eaters) chose different options for each course and really couldn’t fault a thing. If you are hesitating because of the negative comments, don’t - enjoy the experience. It’s not cheap - this isn’t somewhere you would dine everyday, so we opted for the lunch fixed price menu. Would return in a heartbeat. We have been travelling through Scotland for 3 weeks, and have had some absolutely lovely meals - but this one is the best.
