Al's Plaice in Forest of Dean

Such a great place that caters for my dietary requirements. This is the only place that caters for Gluten free! It also taste amazing. The only gluten free chip shop in the Forest of Dean or even in Gloucestershire that I have yet to come across. Lovely owner who is so friendly and makes you feel at ease. Waits times are short, quality of food is high and customer service is brilliant. Price is cheap and easy to find

Been before and was disappointed , left it a while hoping things had improved but sadly still very poor quality. The fish was thin inside the batter, and had zero flavour . No flaking or creaminess to the fish at all just tasted of nothing really. Not a big chip fan anyway but had a small scoop but they turned out to be dried out brittle short what we used to call scrumps and were normally thrown out . But anyway they served them and charged handsomely for them . Needless to say they went straight into the bin . Most disappointed as it used to be top notch , with nice lemon wedge and paper wrapped . Now the carbon wastage via cardboard boxes and paper and plastic is diabolical . Sadly won't bother anymore , but good luck anyway. Cheers Fred

Pre ordered online while staying locally on holiday, Had gluten free fish and chips lovely crispy batter good chips and loads of them and good GF curry sauce altogether very nice, other half had normal fish and chips which she said were really good. Very knowledgeable about GF and use separate frier and packaged in different bags

We wanted to try the local fish and chips on our holiday forest retreat. Paid over £30 for 2 pieces of cod, a battered sausage, curry sauce and 3 portions of chips. Saveloy we paid for was missing. Wouldn’t mind the price if it was nice. Soggy batter. Undercooked chips dripping in oil. We left a whole portion of chips as they were not pleasant to eat. Feeling a bit ripped off.

Went in for sausage and chips x2 plus fish cake not happy at all I know the prices as gone up but don't really mind if we could have eat it so ended up just eating the sausage and fish cake .

Fantastic fish and chips shop with extremely friendly staff and delicious food. They also offer gluten free and the owner is very attentive a d helpful willing to advise and go the extra mile.

Fantastic fish and chips, southern fried chicken and chicken nuggets - I’m sure everything else is just as good. Really friendly staff, great service - we’ll be back the next time we stay locally. Big thanks to Al and the crew.

I really enjoy this chip shop in the heart off the Forest of Dean but I just been in for my lunch today 1 feb I know it was 1.55 but the chicken and mushroom pie was awful I dread to think how many dinner/ lunch servings it had sen as the top was inedible obviously heat up on multiple occasions making it a hard biscuit I paid over six quid and had chips for lunch Sorry for poor feed back but I would of returned it but thought you may off closed you’ll find it on the hewesfield straights

Popped in on a Tuesday with my littles. Friendly service from everyone, children were given their drinks straight away and having meal deals made it cost effective for massive portions that will do us the day. Thanks Als Plaice 🙂

It was lovely and warm in Al’s Plaice and so although we had our order taken as we walked through the door, we were pleased that some of what we wanted needed to be freshly cooked. As ever, the fat and flakey fish was wrapped in a delicious crispy batter, and the mountainous box of chips contained really tasty, light brown beauties. It was an 11 minute drive home once we were back to the car, and with finding plates and cutlery, popping the kettle on etc, we ate some 20 minutes after we left the shop. Al’s Plaice fish and chips were still hot: the batter crisp and the chips superb. Thank you 😊

Woman behind the counter tonight took my order went through it twice with he and she couldn’t I stand what I was asking for. Finally got it jotted down only to get the order wrong AGAIN happened before with items missing, won’t be eating from the again customer service is useless, except for al he’s a decent bloke and very well presented and customer focused shame I can’t say the same about his staff.

We went on the Gluten free nights of Tues and Wed. Al was very friendly and explained all about the Gluten Free frier and separate area and it was clear they knew all about cross contamination. All in separate bags too. The app can be downloaded and was very clear and self explanatory so with 3 of our party of 7 that are coeliac we were all extremely impressed with the portion sizes and quality. All in all 10 out if 10.

Waited on the phone for over one hour. When finally got contact told we we busy. Get more staff?? Will not waste my time with you. With that service you may stay in business but I will not be a customer.

We telephoned in a very large take away order for 8 adults all wanting different items from the extensive menu. Despite this, when we arrived at the time estimated, all the food was ready for collection and very hot. The staff were also very accomodating and jolly. Would definitely recommend based on our experience

This is a great fish & chip shop with really friendly service. Also on Tuesday and Wednesday they do a brilliant gluten free menu, which was perfect as I have gluten intolerance and therefore was able to enjoy a takeaway with all the family (which isn’t always possible). I ordered by phone to collect and on arrival Al talked me through how the gluten free food is prepared and how seriously they take cross contamination, which puts your mind at ease, especially for those with more severe allergies. The portions were very generous and the food was delicious. The staff forgot to give me part of the order and phoned me on my way home to apologies and offer a refund or to return and collect. I hadn’t even noticed and thought this was a really genuine touch and much appreciated. I look forward to coming back here when we next visit the area! Thanks team Al’s!

My usual chip shop was closed and so I was pleased to see that Al's was open on December 24th. The service was prompt and courteous but alas the food was very poor. Fish and chips - Far too many chips for one person and were I suspect from the previous opening. Serve less and a better quality would be an improvement. The cod was extremely thin, over cooked and basically terrible. The batter was greasey but better than the fish. The next time my regular shop is closed, I will give Al's a miss.

Booked a nearby campsite with family, and contacted Al asking if he could deliver for 36. Easily catered for the 36 of us, gave him our menu a couple of days before. Our group included a GF, and was no problem for Al. Food was really good, FAB curry sauce options. Chips were great. Brilliant service, thank you.

Ordered on just eat to collect. Food ready on arrival. Clean premises. Friendly staff. The owner has put up a screen to keep staff staff which is good considering the times. Shared large chips with the husband, plenty to go around! Fish portion was large and tasty. Husband had sausage which was freshly cooked. Will definitely order again

Went down there on the 22 Feb Lunch time got 1 portion chips and 3 Sausages I am pretty sure the chips where from friday night hard you just could not eat them they went Strait in the bin. Will never go in there again

Simple amazing. Due to additional food restrictions + gluten restrictions in our diet the owner actually went out and bought a different gluten free batter mix just for us! It is also clear that the owner is particularly aware of cross contamination so is extra careful when it comes to the gluten free menu as well. I can honestly say i don't think i have ever had such kind support and service than i have receive at this fish and chip shop... as far as we are concerned 5 stars isnt enough and there should be a 6th star awarded to AL's Plaice! Well done.

Tuesday 21st January I attended this establishment and I was very impressed. The chip shop have a lot to offer including a wide range of drinks, food and even ice creams.The service was quick, efficient and very friendly. The food was even better!I would recommend this chip shop as I have never had a bad meal here.They also have a selection of 3 different curry sauces chip shop, Chinese and Irish! Make sure you try the Chinese curry sauce...

I visited the chip shop on 2nd Jan 2020 and when I went in there were two members of staff who were extremely rude. Made me feel like they couldn’t be bothered to serve me. Then when I asked for fresh cod with thin batter the one lady sighed at me and mumbled something. Then whilst I was waiting for my food the two members of staff was discussing someone else that worked there and wasn’t being very nice about that person at all. Made me feel really uncomfortable. Got my food home and it was terrible fish was burnt and chips were dry. Would never go back here.

I visited the shop after recently moving to the area. I have to say the staff were very kind and couldn’t do enough for us. Our fish and chips were cooked to perfection as was everything else that we ordered! Would highly recommend!

Popped in tonight after hearing this place were able to serve gluten free fish and chips (a rarity around here!) and I was so impressed with how the owner dealt with my dietary requirement. Having coeliac disease means that I will be extremely poorly if I eat gluten or anything which has been contaminated with gluten. Avoiding cross contamination is hard at the best of times, but the owner made me feel at ease, and clearly had an excellent understanding of how to avoid cross contamination (separate fryers, utensils etc).My cod and chips were fantastic - I'd even go as far as to say they were better than my family's gluten-containing versions! I will 100% be back, thank you :)

The chips were discussing the staff was rude much prefer tram stop. If the staff was a bit nicer the review would go up to a 3 star.

The reviews looked good. We arrived and ordered our food and as it was early it all needed to be cooked so we popped to the shop and came back for it. The haddock had to be defrosted......Seeing as it was fresh most of the chips were under cooked.They also completely forgot part of our order so we had to call back in and arrange a refund.Definitely not the best fish and chips I’ve had.The cod was very nice. The sausage was nice.Some of the onion rings were nice, the rest were over cooked/tasted burnt but soft.

We enjoyed our haddock & chips with curry sauce, all gluten free which is available Thursday-Saturday from a separate fryer although the owner is considering getting another portable fryer for other days. Popular and a great service so would have scored a 5 but other family members received some normal cod that tasted off (I expect they would have scored 2). I reported this to the owner who offered more fish but I declined as this was the following day.

Do not have fish and chips very often, but when I do I always go to Al's Plaice and have never had a thought to complain in the 10 years I've lived in the Forest. However, this evening ordered large fish and chips and worst I have ever had from Al's. Dry old fish, hardly any batter, obviously saw me coming .. I think the fish had been sitting there a while .... Such as shame ....

As it was Saturday me and my family decided to go for Fish and Chips at this lovely shop! Both ladies were very polite and gave me a warm welcome when they took my order. We didn’t even wait a minute and the food was outstanding. The food rating here is is definitely true... I will be back :)

Visited this so called chip shop the other day all I can say is all of you that rate this shop my have something wrong with you taste buds !! This shop looks busy because your always waiting for things to be cooked nothing in the heaters . The shop is dirty as well clearly they don’t no what they are doing or to run a chip shop !! First time eating from here and this will soon be our local chippy, we ordered on the phone and it was ready within 10 mins, food lovely and warm, not too greasy and fast service. Great portion sizes too! Will definitely order from here again

This has got to be in my top three for fish & chips. Fish was nice & white,batter was light & crispy. Chips were done to a T & service Brilliant. I would Definitely buy from here again. 👍👍

Really friendly chap behind the counter (maybe Al?) when he knew we had to get the food back to where we were staying he wrapped it in foil for us. He even gave our little girl a chocolate for waiting so patiently. And more importantly the fish and chips were really good! Definitely recommend.

Llamé al que me dio que tengo que decir que era una de las personas más educadas y presentable que he conocido, me ofreció tres de salsa curry. esencialistas . . China, chips o irlandés. . Y que tenía que ser el irlandés. . . me dio una gran porción y después ver que no iba a ir a casa me ofrecieron el papel extra para poner en mi regazo, un tenedor y una pila de pañuelos! ! Todo el tiempo él me llamó Sir y me deseó buen día (no hay muchos ahí fuera como este por desgracia)

I've only eaten the cod and chips, but this was on two occasions and they were both really tasty, traditional fish and chips! The server even wrapped it in foil for me so that it would stay hot until I arrived home!

we were staying at the forest of dean cabins ,and as the shop with over the top pricing had nothing that you could make a meal of ,I found al,s plaice the fish was freshly cooked and a large chip was more than enough for us .and had a nice friendly chat with boss .best meal we had in a long time .

The fish was freshly fried while we waited and I was pleasantly surprised to find there was no skin on it. The batter was a little hard in places, the chips were fried well and not too greasy.

Phone and order most of time always fresh good food, go back so must be good, always enjoy. Friendly staff always willing to help and service with a smile making you feel welcome. Try you want be disappointed.

The fish and chips at this chippy (as well as the peas and curry sauce) were excellent - we pre-ordered as there were 12 of us and they were ready when we arrived. And you can get gluten free Thursday to Saturday as long as you pre-order. They have proper GF fish and chips as they fry in a separate fryer to avoid cross contamination. Yummy, good portions and reasonably priced.

We arrived at Al's Plaice after being refused service at a local competitor as they were closing - despite letting us queue for 15 min - so we were relieved that they were open.We were greeted warmly by the owner, Al, who was cleaning the hot cabinets when we arrived but immediately stopped to welcome us and take our order.He seemed genuinely pleased that we had visited and treated each customer in the same way.He kept us informed on the progress of our order and was polite throughout.The food was great and the price was very reasonable.I would highly recommend this place - or should that be 'plaice'?! Lol

Really enjoyed the fish and chips Customers service was great and we got free curry sauce , that was amazing . Was visiting the area with my daughter and friend and we were impressed with the allergen information available and the hygiene rating keep it up . We will visit again

After visiting this fish and chip shop for the first time our first impression was disappointing. The staff were not in a rush, average size fish and chips, the chips were ok and the fish its self but the fish batter was very pale, very thick and stodgy, the skin was left on and we found several bones. It is very unlikely that we will return.

Stayed at Forest Holidays and called here to pick up some food to take back with us. Best chips we have ever had from a chippy and we are just gutted that it would be a 3 hour drive from where we live!!!Fish was great, burger was spot on and chicken was lovely too, couldn't fault anything.

Staying at local caravan site and after some nice food for the first day. Haddock was massive and Chicken was very nice. Chips were good but a bit mushy but had a lot worse else where. Will be returning for sure.

Starving after a hard day - So fish and chips just the thing!Or so we thought.................................Well after spending over £17 you would of thought you'd get nice fresh chips and juicy cod.The chips were very brown and greasy tasted horrid. Lots of black on them too. So to start we had to pick out the dodgy looking chips then tuck in. Not for very long. They ended up on the fire. The fish tasted alright actually, but was very skinny not good value for money.This is very disappointing as it was around 5 in the evening. You would of thought they would get it right. Skimping when locals are paying is just plain wrong. What are they thinking serving up food like that AND because it's happened before they deserve this review!! We think they either reheated the chips or had them standing a long time. YUK Skinny fish shouldn't even make it to the shelf. We won't be having food from there again.

Don't often, but when I do it has to be good - this is possible the best Fish and Chip shop for miles around, well worth a visit.

We ordered 5 haddock and chips-which were cooked to order-ALWAYS A GOOD SIGN! However on this occasion Haddock was not good and the chip portion size was disappointing .Staff helpful and the place was very clean. All in all an average fish and chip experience and I was so so hoping for better!

We live near an award winning Fish and Chip Shop but I have to say these fish and chips would give them a run for their money. We had them as takeaway while caravanning in the area. Would highly recommend

have visited Whitecroft one twice in last month. firstly I have to say very friendly and welcoming. Lovely little chippy and VERY VERY clean! Working in catering for over 12 years and too many food and hygiene courses makes me judge mental lol and the only thing that put me off was the young girl serving had chipped nail varnish on and both the fryer and girl serving didn't wear hairnet or hat or anything on there heads. The fryer didn't even have her hair tied up. FOOD WAS LOVELY! good deals on food! Portion size was average! Tad more greasier then I'd like as well

This is a take away and what we have eaten from here has been of good quality and well cooked. We have had a takeaway from here several times, not cheap but value for money. they do other foods as well as fish.

I have ordered from Al's Plaice a on a number of occasions in the past year. The service they provide is wonderful. Last night we ordered food for over 40 people and as always it tasted great. Nothing seems to much and they are always as accommodating as possible. Another huge draw is their Gluten Free Menu. There are few take-aways that offer a gluten free menu and certainly even few with much choice. A few of my friends have Coeliac disease and are delighted at the quality and taste of the food. Will certainly be back again.
