Ali Tandoori in Norwich

Never usually disappointed when I come here but this wasn't the best dinning experience I've personally had at Ali Tandoori and I've had many brilliant nights here over the years. Last time I left a 5 star review but on this occasion I'm struggling to justify giving 4. All 6 of us had a great time but it was more down to the good laugh/company we had than it was from usual 'AT' high standards and as a business if your going to charge full pelt and not do any checks, honest feedback is what should be expected. First of all They seem to have upgraded the look of their features which gives the restaurant a more stylish appearance. Upon arrival the waiter assumed and was almost quite persistent that we all wanted cobra beer. Given the fact that we had just come out of a pub that served us top quality German pilsner, I'm pretty confident in saying this wasn't the first thought on our minds but we just went with it. Popadoms were paper thin and I mean literally soo thin that you could break one up in to little pieces and comfortably fit it in your mouth. The chicken in my curry was dry/overcooked. I noticed this when I bit in to a piece and I could feel and hear that squeaky/rubbery noice you get as I was breaking it down with my teeth. This suggested to me that it was reheated which was a great shame and very surprising. Their was no table check (this is basic stuff) I also asked for a coke in between my meal and I was given a cobra beer then at the end they tried to charge us for it after I sent it back. Overall food wasn't quite up to the typical standards and staff could have been a bit more patient and attentive. These little glitches were all pretty 'un-Ali-Tandoori' like and I hope they won't reappear when we return next month.

Staff we're very friendly and polite and the food was really good. If I'm in Norwich again and fancy Indian food I will definitely go here again 😋

Early Sunday evening meal. Glad I stopped here. Food exceptional, nice ambience and friendly waiting staff. Will be back next time I'm in Norwich. Try the Chicken Sagwala.

Prebooked. So if you want to try it's definitely worth it. We've just recently had dinner here. Honestly, as an authentic curry lover and having tried the Asian curry all over Asia I'd definitely say this is the closest to one of my favourite Indian food in Vietnam. But I think, this is more of authentic Bangladeshi food. It's tasty and not too sweet. Definitely recommend the place. The staffs are very accommodating and friendly. This place is kids friendly, too.

Bloody delightful scran - Chicken Jaal Maal and the green curry is always on point. Committed to the cause. The cause being good curry. Best in Norwich. Their curries are moving Braizy. Poggers.

Great service great food I really recommend starters lamb samosa and onion baji, I always order lamb biryani with saag aloo and scrumptious tarka dhaal yummy.

I recently visited Ali Tandoori Restaurant, and I had a fantastic experience. The staff were incredibly friendly and made us feel welcome from the moment we walked in. The food was absolutely delicious – everything was cooked to perfection and full of flavor. Highly recommend this place for anyone looking for excellent food and service!

Just done a collection and I just have to comment and say how amazing the food was it was delicious I’m so happy with the amount of food I got and the portion size and the customer service is 10/10 definitely will be back

Love this place! Broad diverse menu with many dishes not commonly seen. Calm and relaxing interior too, very nice design. Wonderful friendly service too. This place would be a smash hit in London or New York, and I was delighted to find in little Norwich.

We hadn't been to Norwich for many years so didn't know the restaurant scene at all. We cancelled our first choice of Indian after finding out that it was vegetarian only (their web site had simply said they were vegetarian-friendly). And we didn't book our second choice after finding out that it didn't serve alcohol (we weren't in the mood to bring our own as our experience is that we either end up bringing too much or too little). So we weren't sure what to expect from this our third choice. In fact it was a very enjoyable and very tasty meal with excellent service, even if the menu seemed fairly standard.

Were on our way to another establishment when we came across this one. Well there's not enough superlatives to say how great this place was. From the minute we walked in the door the staff were amazing. The New Zealand sauvignon blanc was great. So onto the food from starters to mains sides and all this was top-drawer, if ever in Norwich again this would be my first stop, would highly recommend.

The food was good and so was the service.

This place fell down as on the bill at the end of the night, there was a 10% service charge. Was not mentioned they just slide it on the bill, then expect a tip for the service. As soon as I was not going to tip the attitude turned sour, so we left with no thank you for your custom. Cannot recommend this place with this attitude. Cannot believe in this country you can just add a service charge.

It is not that the meal was not good, I just did not know what I was eating, and that had an impact on my perception of the food. All I can say is, if you know what you are eating or like to explore with your palette, then this place is for you, a good ambiance with A+ service

We loved this place and the food is perfect.... however it's too expensive to eat here now. The service charge is automatically added on which I do not agree with. I decide if I tip not the seller.... sorry won't be back. Shame. We felt very rushed on Saturday night as well .not the normal chilled evening. 1 hr and £65 lighter ..for 2 people?? Hmmmm.

Ali Tandoori. Visited a few times when we go to visit my step-daughter at Uni. A lovely clean restaurant and excellent food with great flavours and cooked perfectly. Staff are great and give good service. Best to book as it can be busy.

We used to live in Norwich back in the 80s. We recently went back for a nostalgic holiday and went back to this restaurant as it was one of our favourites at the time. We hadn’t booked because we weren’t sure of the name (but knew we would recognise it). We turned up at 5:30 as they opened. Although the restaurant was empty they made a big fuss about us not having booked, but did provide a table. They served the food really fast and pressured us to leave, saying the needed the table, even though the restaurant was still almost empty. The food was fine but their treatment of us completely soured the experience. We won’t be going back next time we visit Norwich.

We enjoyed a pleasant meal delivered in a timely fashion but were all put off by the surly approach of the waiters to hurry with our order then leave the premises shortly after finishing our meal. They clearly wanted the table clear 2 hrs after we had sat down.

If you care for food and not staff. Go for it. But if care care staff and food. NEVER ! It can spoil your entire day and mood. The guys are super bad and rude. No humbling, no greetings straight to "to No we don't have any seat" like we are some kind a begger. Thank God we had a booking before. And this is coming from somebody working in hospitality. The staff can get into your nerves. If you can manage go for it.

Absolutely brilliant service excellent staff extremely courteous and professional we had the lamb and chicken balti with poppadoms chutney and naan bread and I have to say it was the best curry I’ve had in my life it was out of this world and the naan was so fresh and tasty

Ordered takeaway to collect. Husband & I are still relatively new to Norwich and have been searching for the best takeaways and this one is now on our favourites list! We placed quite a standard order (Lamb Pasanda, Tikka Massala, Pilau rice & garlic naan). My husband loved the lamb in the Lamb Pasanda, and I found the vegetable Tikka Masaala great with lots of fresh veg. The onion bhaji’s were excellent, as were the garlic naans. Was worth the price and will definitely return, next time maybe for an in-person meal! When we collected the food there wasn’t anyone other than staff, so have rated 4/5 for atmosphere. 5/5 for everything else!

We’ve probably just experienced the best takeaway we have ever had! Justifying that they are the best curry house in Norwich. The service was so friendly and the food, Chicken Jalfrezi and Makhani, was absolutely excellent.

Meal with my wife back in December, always come here when in Norwich. We both had the chicken bhuna, which unfortunately on this occasion was not up to their best - a rare occurance though & will be going back later in January for business. Waiting staff very attentive & friendly!

Visited Ali Tandoori last night for the first time, arrived slightly before the 5pm opening for a takeaway, the guys let me in early (it was very cold stood outside). Very kind of them, they also brought me a coffee to warm up! Really friendly staff, and the food we had was beautifully cooked and tasted lovely. Will definately go back here in an instant.

First time visitors to this restaurant & we were greatly impressed. Delicious food & excellent service, staff attentive & friendly without being over zealous. Group of drunks discreetly & efficiently removed without causing a fuss. Food absolutely first class. Will visit again when back in Norwich. Throughly recommend the Ali Tandoori. Incidentally I had the lamb Ruchitha, fantastic!

I’ve been coming here for years and it remains a great place. The staff recently accommodated quite a complex booking of 10 including two little ones (which became 11 at the last minute). The food is great and the prices are reasonable. A great option.

I've been coming here with friends since 1998! I opt for the Lamb Bhuna because I love tomatoes but there is a huge choice of dishes to choose from. Very generous portion sizes.

Staff is fun and friendly, place is good and busy during dinner time, Food is fresh and hot and very very good. Both times we have been to Norwich this year we ate here and got the same great food and service both times. We will be back next time we are in town.

Went with my wife, daughter and het husband on a Saturday night (20th Aug). No problems with either the food or service given to us. What we all had an issue with was that there was an added 10% service charge added to the bottom of the bill. Neither the menu nor staff mentioned a service charge. Others were not as savvy as we were and left cash tips which were readily taken by waiting staff (so they in theory tipped twice). Will we be going to Ali T again. No due to sneaky tactics to make money out of customers.

So reminiscent of curry restaurants in the 80’s. Excellent service. Draught Indian beers. Huge menu, caters for veggies well. Food well cooked but hubby had a bukina (probably spell that wrong) he felt the spice had not been marinated properly as only tasted on surface. Tarka dhall was exceptional

My husband and I are here, we had popadoms and chutneys. For our mains we had a chicken Naga and a lamb curry with rice and a garlic Nan. The food was fantastic but the service was questionable. I had not finished eating my popadoms and the waiter came over and started moving the chutneys and popadoms which I had not put on my plate, ready for the mains to come out. This made me feel rushed. After this I did not feel very comfortable. I think they need to look at this part of there service ax I’m sure I’m not the only person to feel this way. It’s s shame as it let them down slightly.

Disgusting service and extremely rude staff. They were rushing us and lied and said that there are customers booked after you and when we finished nobody was there! We are group of surgeons who were mislead by the online reviews of this place and we thought we try this place. Most of the surgeons were able to arrive on time except two who arrived later due to work emergency and we had one nurse with her one year old baby. The staff kept interrupting our conversations and almost yelling at us. Finally at the end they threw the bill and coerced us to pay the service charge which they didn't deserve. The food is not authentic and pricy actually. Many Asians were among our group and didn’t like the food. I know many people are giving high ratings but probably most of them are brits who never tasted real food and can’t tell which Asian food is authentic and which one is not. Probably their customers are mostly drunk and enjoy whatever food they are served. It felt like a cheap pub rather than a real restaurant. From our experience today, we are doubtful that the high reviews are genuine! Google should have a better policy to protect consumers. Some form of verification is needed but I am sure this will not suit the business owners.

The best curry I have had for a long time! I am.glad we booked as the restaurant was full with customers when we arrived with not a table free in the house. Beautiful food was served that tantalised the taste buds from start to finish. Worthy of 5 stats all round.
