Alexandros Greek Restaurant and Deli in Carlisle

Theres not enough stars to rate this lovely place. Walking through the door you are transported back to Greece, the music playing, the authentic decor and the amazing food all make for a most ejoyable evening. Aris, the owner and his son greeted us and came round to chat during the night while serving us. Theres so much to choose from on the menu but I had been recomended the mix mezze platter which we had with a bottle of white wine, which I thought may be too much but as it was served at a relaxing slow pace this gave us plenty of time to savour every mouthful and get lost in the ambiance of the evening. I was hoping for some greek dancing but that will have to wait for another time!!

First visit, so decided we would give the mezes a go as it would encourage us to try some different dishes. The food was excellent with a good selection of dishes and amount (full, not too full). The service was great as they explained all the dishes, and even though the restaurant was busy at no point did we feel rushed.

I have only ever been to the deli but the food is always fantastic. The staff are always really friendly and helpful. I hope to experience their restaurant some day.

We had a bunch of starters we could share then perfectly grilled kebabs and slow roasted lamb shank. Everyone's happy and helpful. Great night.

It's a real treat to come here, the family who run it are really friendly and the staff are really really professional and excel at their job. Food is excellent, always fresh, always very tasty and great value for money. Attached is also a great Deli which sells most Greek foods including homemade breads, dips, sweet treats etc. You can even just grab a coffee to go. If I could, I'd eat here weekly.

This restaurant had a homely feel to it with very good food. The moussaka well presented and stifado was melt in the mouth stuff. Combine that with a nice drop of Greek wine and starter of breads with choice of dips and you have a pretty decent authentic restaurant. Better than anything we’ve experienced in Glasgow to date. Next door has a nice small deli too. Great value for money.

So happy having them squeeze us in before a big group. The veg. Moussaka and meat moussaka were tasty. Busy place. Quaint.

Lovely authentic Greek restaurant We loved the food & great staff

So sometimes in life you get the pleasure of going into a restaurant that's a pleasure from the second you enter to the moment you leave. This was my latest one. If you have had the pleasure of living in Greece. I did for a summer many years ago. I felt like I was back there again. The hospitality, atmosphere, food, wine. J. Rayner is a man who really understands what makes a good restaurant, so if you don't believe me, trust the J. It was an absolute pleasure, thanks to all the staff for making it a special memory in our hearts. Look forward to seeing you soon.

Portions quite small, tzatziki not tasty, like heavy oily mayonnaise, service not very friendly, baclava with 1 scoop of ice cream 8 pounds,in Greek bistro,not in restaurant. I was disappointed. Sorry.

I just love Alexandros! Still my favourite restaurant in Carlisle. The service is very good. The owner always seems to be on duty to take orders. The food is never a disappointment and the atmosphere in the restaurant tonight ( Saturday) was absolutely buzzing at 6:30pm! Fully booked! Traditional Greek music playing in the background , lots of chatter and delicious food/ desserts and drinks being served at all the tables. You just can’t help but take a peek at what other people have ordered. You really do feel like you have been transported to Greece. There is only one minor thing that I wish could be improved upon, and thats the waiting area when you walk in and wait to be seated. Well….there isn’t one. You have to stand and wait in the doorway upon entry where you find yourself to be only a few feet away from someone’s table. It feels a little awkward and intrusive if you’re left standing there for more than a minute. And it’s not great, for those sitting close to the door, to feel a cold draught every time the door opens and closes. But don’t let this put you off, because it doesn’t seem to stop people coming. And the food is too good to miss!

I came here last week for lunch. It was delicious, very authentic. The staff were very knowledgeable and friendly. It was a lovely atmosphere and we had a leisurely lunch which we really enjoyed.

My wife and I visited from Scotland for the first time last and really enjoyed our meal and the whole experience. The staff are really friendly too. We'll definitely be back.

Absolutely without doubt the best restaurant in Carlisle by very very far, and most definitely my favourite place to eat out. Every single mouth full is a fresh burst of authentic Greek delicious flavour. Service is excellent, presentation is beautiful. The atmosphere feels just right. Couldn’t ask for more. To say we were happy is an understatement. They have got everything completely perfect here. Worth every penny and very reasonably priced for the high standard of quality of food. No other place comes close. This will knock spots off anywhere else you eat. OUTSTANDING.

Food was absolutely lovely, one off our favioute meals we have had together. Highly recommend the stifano prime beef. Staff lovely and attentive, fitted us in with no booking on a Saturday where they had non stop tables so thank you very much will definitely be coming back.

Never having been before I had always assumed this was just what you can see from the street, however it opens up into a lovely room which was packed on arrival, lovely atmosphere friendly staff, made you feel very welcome then the food was served an it was excellent, can’t wait to return, will be leaving space for a desert next time, thank you for a wonderful meal

Celebrated my 60th birthday at this wonderful restaurant last night with my family and friends and how amazing it was. A massive thankyou to all the wonderful staff for their great hospitality and amazing food. 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ all the way.

Great greek restaurant with tasty food and excellent service.

This deli is a hidden gem!! Didn't know what to expect as just came in for a quick sandwich but this is really delicious food 😍 I had a chicken gyro which was flavoured beautifully with just the right amount of every ingredient & decent amount of sauce. Quick & friendly service. Good selection of products for purchase too. Only downsides were the atmosphere was very quiet so maybe a little bit of light music would have made me feel more comfortable, and the Greek coffee was essentially a shot which I did not enjoy so it would have helped to be told what it was before ordering. Overall great little deli which I'll definitely pop into again!

The best Greek restaurant in Britain probably - maybe in the world! Everything is home-made, beautifully presented and utterly delicious. The best ever fresh pitta and sourdough bread to go with the best ever Greek dips - fresh and delectable - nothing like the supermarket offerings. The mezze is out of this world, and so many fabulous dishes. Stuffed squid is amazing!! Desserts superb. All this excellence in a spotlessly clean and tastefully Greek setting, with an authentic Greek ambience, in the decor and in the lovely Greek family that are your attentive and friendly hosts. Happy and atmospheric Greek music complement the atmosphere too - I particularly love that! This wonderful restaurant is VERY popular so you have to book.

A fabulous dining experience heightened by the service levels of the staff. The meal had elements of "magic" in every course, and was served with a smile in every case.

Wonderful experience at Alexandros. Patrons are greeted by a welcoming staff, tasteful Greek decor and Large selection of authentic Greek appetizers and entrees, including GF and Vegan. Scallop appetizer, Lamb Kleftiko and Greek red wine were delicious and filling. The service is attentive, available and accommodating. If you crave an authentic Greek cuisine in the damp Carlisle autumn/winter, seek out Alexandros. Finishing with Ouzo is a nice parting treat to walk to walk the streets.

10/10 evening. Food, service, atmosphere, wine all fantastic. We feel like we've been whisked back to Greece for the evening. We chose the mezze and it did not disappoint. Every dish (and there were lots!) was just as good as the one before. It's clear that they use the best ingredients, authentic recipes and love what they do.

I visited Alexanderos last Friday (13th Sept) for the first time (I've only lived in Carlisle for a few months). Although it was extremely busy the owners went out of their way to make up a table for one; and once seated, the servers were quick to offer me a menu and help advise me on a bottle of white wine that would suit my preferences. Rather than having a main meal I choose to have three appetisers, followed by a dessert. Each appetiser was delicious, but the standout was the Deep Fried Haloumi, which was paired with a strawberry puree and fresh fruit. The standard of each dish was outstanding, but what made my experience exceptional was the service: the servers were attentive, cheery and good-humoured; and the owners were amiable, communicative and gracious. I will be going back as soon as I can. 🙂

Nipped in for a quick meal after finishing work. Incredibly efficient service was provided by staff, there were 4/5 staff serving plus a manager. The food was also absolutely excellent: beautiful flavours, fresh bread/veg and delicious sauces.

Based on past reviews we decided to pay this place a visit at lunchtime and we weren’t disappointed. There is a lot on the menu to choose from, we shared a flat bread & 3 dips starter, my wife had vegetable moussaka and I ordered chicken skewer for our mains, everything was excellent including the service. They don’t do draught beer but they do 500ml ice cold Mythos. Great authentic food to eat in or take away.

We had the light lunch menu. We did not know that they would be closing within the hour we arrived but the staff were very courteous and helpful. The restaurant itself was clean and there was some lovely Greek music playing that created a lovely atmosphere. The food was of high quality and attractively laid out.

Unexpected delight. Traditional greek cuisine with a modern chef’s touch. The stuffed squid “kalamari gemisto” is truly delicious, the mezzes simple yet perfectly balanced and spiced. Who would have thought, in Carlisle?!

I had made a reservation and went for a special dinner. The staff were most welcoming, and the food was amazing.

Called in on the off chance a table would be available as we hadn't booked. Despite it being really busy for a Thursday night they squeezed us in but stated they needed the table back by 7.30pm which wasn't a problem. We ordered two frozen cocktails which were beautifully made, really tasty and a great size. I'm coeliac and the amount of gluten free options is amazing! We ordered the bread & dips for 3 people. Despite me requiring gf pitta we weren't charged extra which was nice. I fully expected shop bought pittas but they were BEAUTIFUL and clearly home made. My friend had the stuffed vine leaves to start & I had the baked feta. Both were stunning. For mains my friend who didn't have a starter had the king prawn dish, we then had 2 beef in the spicy tomato sauce. All 3 dishes were stunning. The beef was cooked perfectly & just melted under your fork. All dishes came with rice. The service was fantastic we were checked on regularly and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. Our bill came to around £108 which we were extremely happy with for the service & quality of the whole evening. We will 100000% return I've already told many about the food!

The food was absolutely perfect! Lamb souvlaki was divine and also the lamb chops where delicious. The staff were all very attentful to my diet needs and intolerances and very polite! I highly reccomend it! I would suggest booking in advance as it can be very busy at all times. I will surely come back for more.

We had a fabulous meal here. The trio of dips and pitta was a highlight. Croquettes were great (although they forgot about this on our order so we had it with mains). The pork souvlaki was slightly tough, but all of the accompaniments were delicious. Slightly on the pricey side. Overall a delicious meal and would recommend.

It's an absolutely amazing place, I would say it's the best restaurant in Carlisle. The food is fresh and delicious, the level of service is impressive - you will definitely want to come back.

What an amazing place! Might be the best Greek food I have eaten outside of Greece! Service was amazing! Food was excellent and this is a most visit place if you are passing through.

Exceptional as always, the service, the hospitality, the quality of ingredients and food is always unrivalled. The wonderful smells of the food being prepared transport me to Greece/Crete on the harbour sat in tavernas with fond memories.

What an experience today at Alexandros! From the moment we stepped in, it felt like we were transported to Greece on a summer holiday. The ambiance and decor were so authentically Greek that we almost forgot we were still in England. A few times, we were pleasantly surprised when the waiters spoke in a proper Northern England accent, reminding us with a chuckle that we weren’t actually in Greece. It added a charming, unexpected twist to our evening. The food was exceptional—dare I say, even better than what we’ve had in Greece! Each dish was bursting with flavor, clearly made with fresh ingredients and a lot of love. The ambiance, the attentive waiters, and the overall atmosphere were just perfect. We were recommended by our friend Luca, whose cousin owns the restaurant, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the tip. This was an incredible experience from start to finish. This is a quality over quantity restaurant. The entire meal was excellent and the staff could not do enough for me and my partner. The lamb skewer with greek yoghurt coleslaw was cooked beautifully.

Fantastic gluten-free options and knowledge

This lovely restaurant came highly recommended as a place to eat. We wanted to go somewhere nice for our wedding anniversary so gave Alexandros a try. We walked in to a warm welcome, attentive staff and the tastiest food. A flavour sensation! The food arrived speedily and hot. All in all we had a lovely evening. Thank you.

We have been trying to get back here for food since covid finally got to come sat 22 June ! My 2 friends were first timers one who is a very fussy eater! SALATA EPOXIS XOIRINO SOUVLAKI KASEROKROKETES TIGANITO KALAMARI These were just a few of our dishes and boy were they tasty !!!! The food here is excellent and even if you are a fussy eater there is something on the menu that you will enjoy! Service and atmosphere top notch!

A Greek restaurant in Carlisle; who would have thought it? Alexandros is an unassuming little restaurant in the metropolis of Carlisle. Apparently it’s been there for over twenty years. The first time we tried to visit it was chock full on as Saturday lunchtime. Consequently we booked for the following Saturday. The owner and staff are all charming and very efficient. The food good and plentiful. Great coffee too. It’s easy to see why this place is successful. It delivers on every level and the success is well deserved. A lot of restaurants that go out of business and have a million excuses would do well to study Alexandros formula.

Great food and service! It gets very busy so recommend booking. Can accommodate allergies very well, had an amazing gluten and dairy free meal.

My experience of Carlisle is that it’s a bit of a restaurant wasteland with loads of below average venues so finding a place that serves delicious food and offers great service is a rare treat. Well done Alexandros !

A great restaurant. The menu has a lot of choice and there is something for most appetites I would say. The dishes we had were tasty and well prepared. I was particularly impressed by the service. They worked as a team, as three or four people looked after us seamlessly. They were timely, efficient, and polite. A well managed and well run crew. I noted a couple of instances were the team were paying attention to their clientele. If however, you wear hearing aides, it is not a quiet restaurant. Nothing the restaurant can do about that. Just a heads up.

If you are looking for a good restaurant, you should visit here. You can enjoy high quality Greek food. The baked feta is my favourite!

Very good food. Not to much. Took all the daily specials. Which indeed the are The restaurant could use some plants. Service is nice and friendly and they even got us drinks not on the menu! Make reservations if you want to eat after 18:00.

In a word, fabulous! My wife had been before with friends, but it was my first visit. I can't rate it highly enough. Every member of staff was friendly and knowledgeable, made us feel welcome from entering the door. We both went for the day's special. Oh my word, awesome. We washed it down with a great bottle of Greek rosé and I had a couple of Metaxas post meal.

All 4 us throughly enjoyed our meals. The food was so delicious and very authentic Greek. The staff were exceptional friendly and couldn't do enough for us. We will definitely be going back there.

I regularly eat here and quite honestly my wife and I try other restaurants for variety.The problem is quite simple . We keep coming back to this restaurant as its simply the best place to eat in Carlisle . Food is first class and when you go for the specials mmmmm...it is amazing. The staff ,well what can I say, great team. Atmosphere is so relaxed and it feels natural . I keep trying to find another place , but I keep coming back here . Finally I do have to say, its amazing value .
