A very good traditional pub. Felt relaxed as soon as we arrived. Enjoyed my fish which was properly cooked and tasty. It was most enjoyable to look around at the pub itself, seeing how it has changed little over the years, just added to over those years. Kept its character , so welcoming.

A hidden gem. Stopped for a couple of drinks (no food but smelt incredible) was an individual guitarist/singer on at the time who was brilliant. Great selection of ale, friendly locals that made me feel like one of their own and a couple of pub dogs that made me feel like I was home from home. An old fashioned traditional pub which is realistically hard to find these days. Will definitely return when I’m in the area next. Keep up the good work.

Great local What a fantastic find. A proper pub serving excellent beer with the very best atmosphere. Don't expect a plastic, fake , pretend pub. This isn't a *spoons" pretend pub, nor a gastro nonsense pub serving mass produced beer. This is a proper English pub serving their own excellent beer alongside a welcoming atmosphere. We didn't eat but the offering smelled wonderful. Well priced too. Well be back one day 😁.

Lovely pub. Came here on a solo trip after a fishing trip down the veir island. Only problem was when i left, had a few too many carlings (as so it seems), left and fell asleep at the local church opposite the pub., And felt so violently ill that i spewed so much, it actually. came out my nose! And no sense of what happened. But never the less. I felt some what a sense of freedom after, like i was back in my teens again. Would go again. It’s almost like nostalgia now!

Ended up here by good luck rather than by design as we tried to get in to other places which were already booked up. We were in the end room where the fire is. Friendly, cosy and unspoilt. The beer was great and the roast was excellent with 3 different sizes of portion to choose from. Just what we wanted.

A very good Sunday lunch in this traditional local pub and micro brewery at a very reasonable price. My only comment would be the same as a lot of places - serve on a larger plate so the food isn’t piled up. This is a very friendly very rustic pub where you can enjoy a roaring log fire and will always end up chatting with someone - not really the place for a romantic meal for two but perfect for good beer and home cooked food.

We went to the Albert on two evenings within the last few days and left happily both times. It presents itself like a place you would have seen in the eighties (except for the non smoking policy naturally), when entering a pub, which is nice to still have nowadays. All the food was good, the mix grill was especially tasty and the prices were more than reasonable, especially for the quality. I also like the fact, that they sell ale from their own microbrewery. All the people serving and at the bar were exceptional friendly and attentive and you also meet two nice friendly dogs. Highly recommended!

I was i Totnes for just over 36 hours and visited the Albert three times. It is one of those pubs that i will drift away to in particularly boring meetings for years to come. It is ramshackle with few right angles, it is cosy but light enough to easily read your paper and fail to do much of the crossword as i did. or to have a game of gin rummy as a group of other blokes were doing. There is a fruit machine that is permanently switched off. (Which in my mind is even better than no fruit machine at all. )There is a partially trained pub spaniel who pads around dispensing doggie good cheer to all and sundry. The beer (which is brewed on premises )is excellent. nothing super crafty that will scare the horses but best , pale ale and bitter done brilliantly. Local cider for grown ups that the good people at koppaberg should try and go back to making flat pack furniture. Giles and his staff are friendly knowledgeable hosts for whom nothing is too much trouble. There is a lovely wee beer garden out the back and the regulars we met were lovely. We ended up chatting to lots of different people there, the place just lends itself to conversation. Deserves to be supported much as i loved the fact we got a seat easily on a Saturday night it makes me worry a bit. Pop in if you are visiting have a pint remind yourself why you love pubs.

Visited this traditional pub while staying in the B&B; opposite. Very much a "locals" pub but we were welcomed, seated and served promptly by the staff. Friday night being "pie" night I ordered the brie and mushroom which came with huge chips and peas. My husband had the sausage and mash. Both meals very tasty, and filling. The resident dog (Albert?) sat under the table, obviously waiting to be fed any spare chips! Ale was good and brewed in-house. This is a very traditional pub with no "frills" but perfectly acceptable and reasonably priced.

I was passing the Albert inn yesterday and hadn't been in for a long time, used to pass on my way home from work and drop in for a quick one with work friends. first there was no one in the bar to serve had to wait for someone to appear with not a great welcome, had a better welcome from the resident dog. on asking for some ice my wife thought better of it, the ice bucket looked as if it had been dug out of the garden. on finishing my beer you could see that the glass could also do with a good clean, whilst we were there the bar person leaning on the bar reading the news paper!! was on occasion lifting his feet you could here the stickiness of the floor as he did so. Not a good experience. The only redeeming feature is the real ales that is brewed on the premises, one should find out if they supply any of the pubs locally and drink there.

On arrival, we noticed that the ‘Albert inn’ was a ‘no dog’ establishment. My Mother has Asthma, so therefore is allergic to animal hair. We thought that this was good so then entered. We then came in contact with a dog (we thought that it was the owner’s or something) and walked straight back out. Many people don’t realise the full affect that animal hair has on some people. This review has no reflection on the food at the ‘Albert inn’, which of course we didn’t stay to experience.

I was very pleased to see that the Albert has not changed since I last called 3 years ago. It is easily the best pub in Totnes (and one of my top 4 in Devon), and is now the only pub in town offering real cider, as the Bay Horse sadly has changed to kegged stuff. There is a range of real ales, including some brewed in-house. The ciders are local Winscombe, usually brought up from the cellar by the glass, and boxed Old Rosie. The food is good basic pub grub, usually including two vegetarian dishes (but no vegan option). A homity pie goes down very well with some Winscombe cider. The Albert is worth visiting just to see the classic building itself. As well as the main front bar, do look in the lounge at the back, and the garden. There is a bookcase in the back passage. The Albert is firmly on the traditionalist side on the dog issue (and long may it stay so, for my part). Both Albert the resident spaniel and drinkers dogs will often be found in the bar.At quiet times, a visitor might walk in and find no-one in sight. Don't think it's closed and depart. Look round the back or just wait in the bar, and someone will soon appear and serve.

We had a cracking evening with teenage kids in an unpretentious atmosphere. The Albert provides great pies, although I had the Beef & Ale Pudding (I think) which was wonderful. A good selection of quality ales, made on-site and friendly staff. Add to that a mix of friendly, chatty and, in one case, pleasantly excentic locals and you'll have a good night. If you expect sophisticated white linen, exotic salads and branded water, I would suggest you just give the staff a cheque for a silling amount of money and just go home unhappy. You'll have the same outcome and more fool you. A pub that know what it is and does not pretend otherwise. Loved it.

Giles and his team at the Albert are working hard to keep a small independent pub with real character.Food is good - and great value - and the wine and spirits selection is excellent. This isn't a fancy gastro pub though. It's a happy, lively local with a great range of events and a varied clientele. From live music nights and quiz nights to weekend beer festivals, the Albert is a Totnes institution. It's dog friendly, and there is a pub dog (Albert) but it is not a 'muddy boots and dogs everywhere' kind of place. There is an open fire in the back bar and some local clubs meet here sometimes. My wife and I often go on a Wednesday for the quiz, and usually pop in if we have friends in town. We were just walking by and it struck our fancy. Wish we had gone there a few more times. The prices are very reasonable, (considering) and the food is good fare without any fancy-smanchy weird spices that will keep you from traveling... Well worth a visit.

I ate at the Albert because it is close to my apartment and because I know that the food they serve is amazingly good value always. But this was on a different planet. An 8oz rump steak, cooked rare and absolutely delicious. They buy their meat from the butcher opposite and the quality is immediately apparent with the first cut. Nice and pink, juicy and tender to bite. You could easily pay £18 for the exactly the same thing in some of the swept up diners around the South Hams. It was fabulous and a credit to the Chef/Patron/Landlord/Chief Brewer/Chief Bottle washer and Darts expert, Giles.

The Albert Inn is exceptional, and if you're in Totnes you should *definitely* go! It is in the best tradition of English pubs, and is the absolute opposite of the seedy/beery impression of pubs one might get from English towns and cities: wonderful welcoming atmosphere, good & cheap homemade food, quirky sense of humour, and lots of live events making this a great focal point for the community. The food is excellent home-made and you get some really great deals (e.g. pie & pint on Thursdays or two steaks for £10 on Thursdays). There are also plenty of special food events, as well as live music (Wednesdays open mic). The sign outside the pub has a face of Albert Einstein on it, although the name actually comes from the owner's dog (Albert) who is delightfully friendly. Also, in summer there is an outdoor area at the back with views over the town centre and the River Dart. Overall, a *great* experience!

We liked Alfred, the pub's dog. And the food! There must be thousands of English pubs named in honor of Queen Victoria's husband. Refreshingly, this one honors Alfred Einstein. This is a tiny place, but there's something on every evening. For overseas visitors, this is a very good example of a friendly "local".

Lovely traditional pub with its own micro brewery producing a minimum of two house ales and occasionnaly a cask stout. Devon Ciders are always part of the products on offer. The pub does an all day kitchen with a lovely and very reasonably priced menu. Where possible local produce is used and you can sure taste that. No 'in your face' televisons or loud music. Regular live music and a lovely open mic night. The mostly local clientele ranges from 18 to nearly 90 and everybody gets along fineWhen I was there they had their first Beer & Cider Festival. Lovely choice of ales and cidersLovely place worth a visit.

visited both night of our stay in Totnes. We enjoyed their 'pie' night, with good wholesome food. The second night we listened to a couple of very entertaining musicians, unexpected and thoroughly enjoyable Sunday evening

In September 2012 we were staying in Totnes in an excellent guest house. Almost opposite was sited the Albert Inn. On the second eveing we called in to try them out for a simple evening meal.A really excellent country pub atmosphere and surprisingly comprehensive menu. The food when presented was more than up to expectations. And one of our party of four just wanted a sandwich which she was able to order without any question about it being dinnertime. On top of all this the pub posseses its own micro breweery. And very good beer too.So, if visiting Totnes, do try the Albert it's just across the bridge from Totnes town and well worth a visit for drinks or for food.

My husband and I visited The Albert Inn at Totnes Devon for our 1st anniversary and my husbands birthday on the same day. We had the most lovely lunch in the newly painted pub. I had the home made quiche which was to die for and my husband had a gorgeous steak sandwich. I would highly recommend that anyone go for lunch, or for an evening meal. Pies are Giles's speciality on a Friday which have become famous in Totnes.

I've known this pub since Tim Langsford took it on in the '90's, I think it was. Actually, I used to drink there under age in the early '60's but can't remember who owned it then! Anyway, Tim fought off all the pub company approaches to acquire the pub which is a terraced kind of place across the bridge from the main town. It seems that the pub is now owned by a small local company with a few outlets so we will treat it as a free house (i.e. NOT owned by a pub company or brewery and tied for ales). That makes it the last remaining free house pub in Totnes which is a travesty (except for Rumour Wine Bar and the Royal Seven Stars Hotel). I have been counting up and think there used to be seven freehold pubs back in the old days but most have closed and gone or are part of Punch or Enterprise Inns. The Albert is a traditional locals' pub and now boasts a micro brewery at the back. Three or four of their own beers on hand-pump all in pristine condition as the bar chappie, also called Tim, kindly gave me a couple of tasters before I plumped for the 4.2 abv. Run by an enthusiastic manager, who also brews I am told, the place is full of characters propping up the back bar relating ditty's of yesteryear and generally entertaining the others who manage to discover this hidden gem. Parking isn't easy in the evenings but Steamer Quay is not far away and is a pleasant stroll although be careful not to fall in on the way back! Long may the place remain unspoiled and slightly higgledy-piggledy! Good basic pub food with homemade pies a speciality although I didn't have time to sample the food on this occasion.

Have been in a few times, excellent atmosphere, a few dogs occasionally, beer is produced in the back of the pub. choice of 3 real ales, bar man / owner is good value, the pie and chips were very tasty, bar billards, darts also available. highly recommended as 50 yards from river, and a real pub "not some plastic lager only bar"

Only dropped in for a quick drink but we were amazed - the decor is totally old-world such as used to exist many, many years ago. The only admission to modernity was a gaming machine in an alcove, but it didn't seem to be used a lot. The pub is also a micro-brewery - I was only able to sample one of Mine Host's beers but I will certainly return for more in the near future. Definitely worth a visit!

Found this place whilst traveling through. Giles the manager and head brewer had a pie and pint night which was very busy. We were glad we stayed because the pies were great and the bridgetown beers were really tasty. Well worth a visit on the quiet side of the tones bridge.

This is a real pub without facelifts, pretention, or TV with low ceilings, steak and ale pies and a very friendly welcome. If you walk in and make even a halfhearted effort you'll soon be in conversation with other patrons over a house brewed ale. Pretty close to heaven.

We visited on a Friday evening as a group of five, and the manager was great, really friendly, making you feel relaxed and welcomed. Most of us chose burgers or veggie burgers, while one had a gammon steak. For dessert, we had banoffee pie, morello cherry tart, white chocolate rocky road, and lemon meringue pie. Everything was delicious. Highly recommended!

Very nice well managed hotel with a very welcoming bar/restaurant. Limited range of draught ciders but compensated for with bottled ciders. Lagers and Ale choice is good. Staff are very friendly and efficient, décor is very pleasing to the eye. Well worth a visit. Did not stay in Hotel, hence no comment on the rooms.

Came in for the first time in several years. Early evening, end of week. We were too early for our booking at a restaurant nor far down and across the road. Friendly in the Barrel House, bit hectic but benign jostling and a good mix of ages, types etc. Fair selection of booze at average current prices. Got a place to sit with a few out and inwards towards the idiosyncratic but interesting crowd. If we hadn’t to leave for a meal and then a music gig down at St Mary’s we’d have easily stayed in the Barrel House all evening.
