Alban's Well in St Albans

The food is absolutely delicious. And the staff are very friendly and helpful. Our server was Jackie and she was wonderful. We had the roasts. I had pork belly and my wife had chicken. Both of which were so tasty and came with loads of trimmings. We couldn't believe that we got a table so easily. This place should be packed out all the time..the food is that good. And great value too.

I had never been to this venue before and had only chosen it because we weren't accepted at any of the other places I had chosen, due to our numbers. (I booked for 13)) My family and I were out for Sunday lunch, and I was therefore a bit anxious as there don't seem to be that many reviews for this place. I really shouldn't have worried. The roasts were absolutely delicious. The meals were hot, generous portions and the meat and veg were delicious. Based on our experience, I would highly recommend the Alban's Well for a Sunday lunch. I can't imagine why more people weren't eating there that day. It should be bursting at the seams.

Spontaneous visit on Sunday and tucked into their wonderful Sunday Roast. What a feast, truly amazing. Lovely setting and warm friendly staff. I shall visit again.

Good overall. The staff is nice but a little bit short. The kitchen is not slow but the quality of dishes is high, really good food. Amazing Sunday roast, beef or pork, great!! The restaurant is comfortable and in a good location. Strongly recommended. We have a lovely lunch. Good variety of drinks.

I organised a dinner for 20 people at Albans Well and Jackie was there to help me organise everything at every stage of the process and she couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. Everyone was very happy with the food, and the staff were all very friendly. I thoroughly recommend Alban's Well.

Very happy with our visit here. I hadn't been to St Albans in years (used to go out a lot here growing up) so had to a search online. Found this place online and it looked good from the pictures, but I am always sceptical about high street venues from big chains. I needn't have worried. The food, service and venue were all really, really good and I am a proper fussy gastro b"st%rd. The only thing that was little offputting was the music getting knocked up about 8ish and we were with my parents (seventies) and some older children. Wasn't easy to converse but then I get that it was a saturday night and most poeple in St A are out for fun at that time, so I will let them off! :)

We have stopped for lunch but as it was so busy we have skipped that, but we did had drinks. The place is very big and it has got good vibes. The staff at the bar were friendly and accommodating. We will return for lunch very soon as the food that we have seen it looked delicious.

Friendly service and good food.

Very family friendly. We went with two small kids And everyone was very accommodating, spacious for prams and the roast was one of the best we had in St Albans. Definitely highly recommended! Jackie and Georgia were superstars thank you for a lovely sunday.

We had our Christmas dinner here. It was amazing. Food was delicious, service was efficient and friendly. Ambience was just right with low Christmas tunes. Thank you everyone, our Christmas was lovely due to you all. Jon, you have a great team and you obviously inspire them to do well. Great job 😁

Popped in here briefly on New Year's Eve. Lovely atmosphere and staff.

It was a first time experience for me to have Christmas Dinner out so I was a little sceptical. The venue atmosphere and lighting were fabulous with seating and tables well spaced (so you didn’t feel as though you were invading anyone’s privacy or having to apologise each time you needed to visit the bathroom). We were looked after by John and his team (all of which were friendly accommodating and payed attention to detail). The food was amazing with all the trimmings, cooked and prepared perfectly, we all agreed it was a winner, we even had a Christmas cracker! I’m usually the one who is tied to the kitchen so it was a real treat and an experience I’ll look forwards to this year. Thanks for making it as special as it should be 🎄🍾🥂

This restaurant is beautiful inside with marvelous food. The deputy manager Jackie is a wonderful person with very great people skills providing excellent service.

Great modern pub. Very nice food, very kind service. Prices are average. Very spacious. Dog friendly and kid friendly. I'd recommend for either food or drinks. Good for families or chilled group of friends.

We popped into The Alban Well for a quick coffee but ended up staying for a Sunday roast—and what a pleasant surprise it was! Their roast is hands down one of the best we’ve had while eating out in a long time (other than my wife’s, of course!). The meat was perfectly cooked, the vegetables were fresh and flavorful, and the gravy tied it all together beautifully. The atmosphere was welcoming, and the service was prompt and friendly, making the experience even better. If you’re looking for a fantastic Sunday roast, we’d highly recommend giving The Alban Well a try. A Nice unexpected meal!

Fantastic place. Warm and welcoming. Stylish interior lots of space...no table feels crowded. Went for Sunday lunch. Roast beef was excellent. Yorkshire pudding could not be beaten. Vegetables very tasty and well seasoned. Potatoes crispy and full of flavour. Partner had fish and chips which was great, she was very impressed particularly with the chips. We will be back. And soon! The only improvement suggestion I can offer from what was a 5 star experience is perhaps to offer the gravy in a separate jug.

Great service, good food and great location. Short walk from St Albans City train station so enjoy the cocktails. Tried the Christmas 3 course set menu which was pre-ordered as group booking. Starter was Jerusalem Artichoke Tart, followed by Turkey Roast and Winter Spiced Bakewell Tart

Came here to try the new lunch menu (2 courses for £15.95) , overall really good food and great value. We ordered the vegetable arancini and chicken liver parfait for starters and toad in the hole and tempura prawn sandwich for mains. I’d really recommend the trying the hole and the chicken liver parfait. They were both delightful. My partner enjoyed the meal too. Service was a little slow and haphazard (forgot to give menus, forgot to give drinks, forgot cutlery) but we chalked this up to being a new menu launch. Service was exceptionally friendly.

We came in for a meal on Saturday and had a great lunch. We were served by Jackie who was very friendly and efficient. Great choice of food from the lunch and main menu. We will definitely be returning again soon!

Had the Sunday roast and was honestly blown away by how good the food was. Three of us had the pork belly, and one the beef, and every element of the roast was perfectly cooked which very rarely happens when eating a roast out. They even brought over extra gravy without us asking. Dessert was absolutely delicious and the service was great. This place, together with Dylan’s at the Kings Arms, will now be our top 2 places for a roast in St Albans.

We were a group of 10 booked in advance. There was only one server and one chef in the entire restaurant. So unfortunately the service was an issue. The food reviews were mixed based on what everyone ate.

Stopped by for lunch today, beautiful decor, food was delicious, service was great. Our waitress Jackie went above and beyond to make sure we were happy (we really were) We will definitely be telling others about this gem!

Went for Sunday lunch with friends, we had been to the Albans Well for drinks before but not for food. We all had the roast dinner, I had Beef which was so so good, it tasted amazing, huge yorkshires and veg cooked to perfection and not rock hard like you get elsewhere. We all cleared our plates. Dessert was amazing too. Two ladies looked after us, sorry I can’t remember their names but they were both lovely and couldn’t do enough for us. We will definitely be returning. Thank you ☺️

Oct24- went for a drinks after a matinee at Alban Arena. Plenty of tables and staff friendly and it was very quiet - 4.30-7pm. Garlic bread and 4 drinks undern£40.

Waited 5 minutes with nobody at the bar, then they served the person who rocked up 10 seconds prior 🙄

Popped for drinks only on Saturday to get away from the market crowds. Quite (exactly what we needed). Beautiful and relaxed atmosphere. Clean and spotless toilet. Quick service for our pints (not cheap but nothing much is in At. Alban's) Chill...

Food was fine, but service was SO SLOW. Drink order took 19mims to be served, 1h from submitting food order to receiving our mains. The whole place was only 1/3 full too. Also, they were unable to put any surplus food into a container to take away.

The new manager is very friendly and helpful, Sunday roast looked superb.

We visited early on a Friday evening. The service let the whole meal down, after we finished our mains we waited 25 minutes, in that time not a single server walked through the restaurant. In the end I had to ask the chef in the open plan kitchen what was going on. We were unable to order desert since we ran out of time waiting for service. I asked to speak to the manager to provide feedback and he was rude and dismissive and took no responsibility for the shambolic service. A very promising restaurant let down by terrible service, we will not be returning.

First visit with my parents and really enjoyed the food and the service. Will definitely go back.

Great place, service and food wonderful

Okay alban well well well, where do we start. It was diabolical, ordered the chicken Caesar salad, tasted like fish and that’s more of a night thing if ygm. Not how I want to start my day and overall was just minging. Rather go hungry, thanks a bunch👍🏻

I'm very sorry to say the food wasn't to our expectations. We could only see one table reservation for the entire night which was ours. Very disappointed, but the waiting staff was really good and cheerful. Well done to them.

Very poor service. The place was quite a total of three tables. An order of sandwiches took 1.00 hour to deliver only half of the order. Very slow to serve. I would not recommend it. The place itself is very nice

It was very quiet when we went there. It was a Sunday though.

Jackie served us and she was so welcoming and chatty. Great selection of drinks as well.

Ordered a toasted chicken club sandwich from the bar and took my seat outside. Sandwich took 30 mins to arrive despite asking twice. Staff defensive when I chased up food order. Excuses like “we’ve had an event. We’re clearing after event. We’re one staff member down”. I counted no more than 8 customers… When food arrived disappointed to see it wasn’t worth the wait - looked very unappealing and bread barely toasted. Fries tasted of old cooking oil. I couldn’t even interest my partner to eat half of my rejected sandwich. If they continue with the standards we experienced Alban Well will be out of business within the year.

A group of 7 and Lauren was a perfect host.. I had the chicken pie and it was perfect with greens and mash..

Four of us shared a table on a Saturday evening in this nicely furnished restaurant. The menu is limited but was enough to provide an excellent choice. We all had different starters and main meals, and all of the food was of an excellent quantity. The staff were superb and very attentive without being overbearing. All in all a lovely experience. Thank you Albans Well!!

I can't recommend this place highly enough. The food was excellent, staff were superb and the service was really good. The staff couldn't do enough for us...I'm particular Jackie.. she was very helpful. The whole place is immaculate and clean especially the toilets and says a lot about the establishment and staff.

Arranged a business lunch, service was exceptional, venue very relaxed and clean, staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Great find, will definitely be back.

Booked a table for 8 to watch England in the Euros. Had food at the table, all good dishes. Really great staff, worked superbly as a team. After the football we went off to try a couple of other pubs. But came back here for a one and in Espresso Martini, which was excellent. A nice space, but the best part were the staff, friendly and efficient, Well done!

What a fantastic lunch! Best chicken club, gorgeous fries, a choice of wholemeal bread would have been a plus, but that's merely a side bar. Jackie, manager, never misses a beat,and her colleagues are attentive, polite and welcoming. The humour that eminates from the staff behind the bar is a bonus! Long may it remain. Well done and thanks for all the fish.

Went there for late drinks, after dinner in another restaurant. The waiter was really welcoming. It was such a lovely atmosphere that we didn't see the time pass. Definitely going again. The place is relaxing, clean, confortable and welcoming.

Shame it's so quiet this places deserves more. Food was fantastic, some of the best I've had. We didn't drink much as we had been on the road most of the day. Atmosphere was really inviting too. Servers where really good and on point. If I'm in the area I will be visiting again.

Really quiet, but doesn't deserve it. The food was excellent and service impeccable. Great cocktails (well done Kelvin) aswell Apparently has some bad reviews in the past, but honestly think you should try again. New manager (I think his Tom) seems to have his head screwed on and understands what he needs to do to turn it around. Give it another go. 3 star for atmosphere as it was so quiet.

This has become one of my favourite places to go to but the service on Friday left me a little sour. Slow. Had to call them several times as they chatted by the bar. Food was great as always

The worst meal I have ever eaten out, we both sent both our plates back despite ordering different dishes (which we have never done before). However if your 30+ and are looking for drinks out, the vibe in there at the front was great.

Popped in for a pint of Youngs Special with a friend. We were served by Beckie, who was very friendly and efficient. She made us feel very welcome. The only downside was that the beer wasn't very fresh. It was drinkable but I'm guessing that more lager is sold here than real ale, so there's not the 'pull through' to keep it fresh. I'm sure that if we had asked , we could have had a replacement. The beer was good on a previous occasion. Had fish and chips too then, which was excellent, and a very good portion size It's a nice comfortable bar / restaurant.

Such a gorgeous pub in the busy highstreet! Beautiful dining area and also dog friendly in the front! Defo recommend for an evening out😍 Ordered the mezze platter which was perfect for nibbles!

I had a server called Beckie a few days ago she was very attentive and gave very good service would definitely recommend this pub and the food was amazing !

I’ve visiting Albans well twice before and loved it, but had a not so good experience last night. I ordered the quinoa and feta salad, it was super watery and bland. The waitress took away my plates so quickly that I could catch her to tell her how bad it was. I told the waitress on paying about how bad the food was and although she apologised it would have been nice to have been offered something else to eat as I was pretty hungry and the waitress would have seen I barely touched my food! Unfortunately I wouldn’t recommend coming here again

Can't fault the great breakfast and attentive service. Perhaps down on atmosphere due to being very quiet despite it being market day. Could have done with more hand pumps on the bar although the London Original (bitter/pale ale) was very pleasant.
