Alban's Well in St Albans

Stopped by for lunch today, beautiful decor, food was delicious, service was great. Our waitress Jackie went above and beyond to make sure we were happy (we really were) We will definitely be telling others about this gem!

Went for Sunday lunch with friends, we had been to the Albans Well for drinks before but not for food. We all had the roast dinner, I had Beef which was so so good, it tasted amazing, huge yorkshires and veg cooked to perfection and not rock hard like you get elsewhere. We all cleared our plates. Dessert was amazing too. Two ladies looked after us, sorry I can’t remember their names but they were both lovely and couldn’t do enough for us. We will definitely be returning. Thank you ☺️

Oct24- went for a drinks after a matinee at Alban Arena. Plenty of tables and staff friendly and it was very quiet - 4.30-7pm. Garlic bread and 4 drinks undern£40.

Waited 5 minutes with nobody at the bar, then they served the person who rocked up 10 seconds prior 🙄

Popped for drinks only on Saturday to get away from the market crowds. Quite (exactly what we needed). Beautiful and relaxed atmosphere. Clean and spotless toilet. Quick service for our pints (not cheap but nothing much is in At. Alban's) Chill...

Food was fine, but service was SO SLOW. Drink order took 19mims to be served, 1h from submitting food order to receiving our mains. The whole place was only 1/3 full too. Also, they were unable to put any surplus food into a container to take away.

The new manager is very friendly and helpful, Sunday roast looked superb.

Really like this place, food is always excellent and staff are very friendly. Go for early dinner with a friend and just surprised there aren't more people eating here

The fish and chips was proper chip shop quality (served with mushy peas and curry sauce) Honestly couldn't recommend the place enough- especially the wine selection. A great shout for a nice meal in a gorgeous setting. Side note: the apple crumble was next level!!

Nice birthday visit. We were served by Jackie who was very nice and attentive. Food was great as well.

We visited early on a Friday evening. The service let the whole meal down, after we finished our mains we waited 25 minutes, in that time not a single server walked through the restaurant. In the end I had to ask the chef in the open plan kitchen what was going on. We were unable to order desert since we ran out of time waiting for service. I asked to speak to the manager to provide feedback and he was rude and dismissive and took no responsibility for the shambolic service. A very promising restaurant let down by terrible service, we will not be returning.

First visit with my parents and really enjoyed the food and the service. Will definitely go back.

Great place, service and food wonderful

Okay alban well well well, where do we start. It was diabolical, ordered the chicken Caesar salad, tasted like fish and that’s more of a night thing if ygm. Not how I want to start my day and overall was just minging. Rather go hungry, thanks a bunch👍🏻

I'm very sorry to say the food wasn't to our expectations. We could only see one table reservation for the entire night which was ours. Very disappointed, but the waiting staff was really good and cheerful. Well done to them.

Very poor service. The place was quite a total of three tables. An order of sandwiches took 1.00 hour to deliver only half of the order. Very slow to serve. I would not recommend it. The place itself is very nice

It was very quiet when we went there. It was a Sunday though.

Jackie served us and she was so welcoming and chatty. Great selection of drinks as well.

Ordered a toasted chicken club sandwich from the bar and took my seat outside. Sandwich took 30 mins to arrive despite asking twice. Staff defensive when I chased up food order. Excuses like “we’ve had an event. We’re clearing after event. We’re one staff member down”. I counted no more than 8 customers… When food arrived disappointed to see it wasn’t worth the wait - looked very unappealing and bread barely toasted. Fries tasted of old cooking oil. I couldn’t even interest my partner to eat half of my rejected sandwich. If they continue with the standards we experienced Alban Well will be out of business within the year.

A group of 7 and Lauren was a perfect host.. I had the chicken pie and it was perfect with greens and mash..

Four of us shared a table on a Saturday evening in this nicely furnished restaurant. The menu is limited but was enough to provide an excellent choice. We all had different starters and main meals, and all of the food was of an excellent quantity. The staff were superb and very attentive without being overbearing. All in all a lovely experience. Thank you Albans Well!!

I can't recommend this place highly enough. The food was excellent, staff were superb and the service was really good. The staff couldn't do enough for us...I'm particular Jackie.. she was very helpful. The whole place is immaculate and clean especially the toilets and says a lot about the establishment and staff.

Arranged a business lunch, service was exceptional, venue very relaxed and clean, staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Great find, will definitely be back.

Booked a table for 8 to watch England in the Euros. Had food at the table, all good dishes. Really great staff, worked superbly as a team. After the football we went off to try a couple of other pubs. But came back here for a one and in Espresso Martini, which was excellent. A nice space, but the best part were the staff, friendly and efficient, Well done!

What a fantastic lunch! Best chicken club, gorgeous fries, a choice of wholemeal bread would have been a plus, but that's merely a side bar. Jackie, manager, never misses a beat,and her colleagues are attentive, polite and welcoming. The humour that eminates from the staff behind the bar is a bonus! Long may it remain. Well done and thanks for all the fish.

Went there for late drinks, after dinner in another restaurant. The waiter was really welcoming. It was such a lovely atmosphere that we didn't see the time pass. Definitely going again. The place is relaxing, clean, confortable and welcoming.

Shame it's so quiet this places deserves more. Food was fantastic, some of the best I've had. We didn't drink much as we had been on the road most of the day. Atmosphere was really inviting too. Servers where really good and on point. If I'm in the area I will be visiting again.

After dipping for a bit, it seems the Alban's Well is again on the up! Really friendly helpful team from bar staff to manager and delicious food - advice on drink selection was great. Had a really lovely evening! Thank you Tom and team.

Really quiet, but doesn't deserve it. The food was excellent and service impeccable. Great cocktails (well done Kelvin) aswell Apparently has some bad reviews in the past, but honestly think you should try again. New manager (I think his Tom) seems to have his head screwed on and understands what he needs to do to turn it around. Give it another go. 3 star for atmosphere as it was so quiet.

Went there for some pre dinner drinks. Very beautiful place. The drinks and the service were nothing special.

This has become one of my favourite places to go to but the service on Friday left me a little sour. Slow. Had to call them several times as they chatted by the bar. Food was great as always

The worst meal I have ever eaten out, we both sent both our plates back despite ordering different dishes (which we have never done before). However if your 30+ and are looking for drinks out, the vibe in there at the front was great.

You shouldn’t be kept waiting more than a five minutes before anyone serves you-had to walk out eventually and try somewhere else!

Popped in for a pint of Youngs Special with a friend. We were served by Beckie, who was very friendly and efficient. She made us feel very welcome. The only downside was that the beer wasn't very fresh. It was drinkable but I'm guessing that more lager is sold here than real ale, so there's not the 'pull through' to keep it fresh. I'm sure that if we had asked , we could have had a replacement. The beer was good on a previous occasion. Had fish and chips too then, which was excellent, and a very good portion size It's a nice comfortable bar / restaurant.

Beckie was my server, she was lovely and so so helpful. She was polite and well mannered and helped me and my family throughout our duration at the Alban Well. The venue has a lovely and cosy environment which all my family enjoyed. I want to thank beckie and the other staff that served us on the night, thank you!

Such a gorgeous pub in the busy highstreet! Beautiful dining area and also dog friendly in the front! Defo recommend for an evening out😍 Ordered the mezze platter which was perfect for nibbles!

I’ve visiting Albans well twice before and loved it, but had a not so good experience last night. I ordered the quinoa and feta salad, it was super watery and bland. The waitress took away my plates so quickly that I could catch her to tell her how bad it was. I told the waitress on paying about how bad the food was and although she apologised it would have been nice to have been offered something else to eat as I was pretty hungry and the waitress would have seen I barely touched my food! Unfortunately I wouldn’t recommend coming here again

Can't fault the great breakfast and attentive service. Perhaps down on atmosphere due to being very quiet despite it being market day. Could have done with more hand pumps on the bar although the London Original (bitter/pale ale) was very pleasant.

The roast dinner I had was amazing. I went for the trio roast, with chicken, beef and Lamb. The lamb just fell apart and the beef was cooked really well and wasn’t overdone or like leather. Best roast I’ve had in a restaurant in years.

Worst service I have ever received. Fortunately it seems like they got rid of the lady with curly hair, however have replaced her with equally as incompetent staff! Owner clearly does not care for his business

Been to Auban’s Well 4 or 5 times and the service has always been terrible. Shockingly understaffed & when I asked today why there are only 3 of you serving 45+ people across the bar & restaurant, they said the bosses want to cut back on wages. Greedy, greedy people. Won’t be returning. Feel sorry for the staff.

Food drinks and service all good at Albans Well, visited on a Friday night and just could have done with a few more punters to give the place a bit more atmosphere. Relatively quiet for such a nice new (relatively) venue.

After twenty five years in the hospitality industry I finally found what can only be described as the premises with the worst service and most terribly trained servers I have ever encountered. The astounding slowness of the service was only outdone by the staffs ability to ignore me at a near empty bar. When asked if they had a rioja the answer was no it was sold out. When asked what else do you have malbec or merlot. Found a wine list later with quite a large selection to be had. Guinness was okay. 2 pints in before the ten minute wait for pint three as the bar staff went to customer after customer who arrived at the bar after me. So we left. I can only reiterate that this was possibly the worst service I have ever had in a bar and were it any of my staff that were acting like this while serving I would be embarrassed. I ranked the atmosphere as two not because of the atmosphere itself but because of the dirt of the tables and floor. That being said the toilets were clean and well maintained and honestly kind of cool.

Set in the heart of the city, this was a great find. Excellent coffee and the best club sandwich ever. Picture sadly doesn't do it justice.

I’m sorry to say we had a very poor experience. When I arrived, the bar area was lively but there wasn’t a single person in the restaurant at the back. I waited to be seated but the staff member was sitting right at the back with her head in her laptop so I didn’t even know she worked there. So I went back to the bar to be seen to my table but the one person serving behind the bar was too busy serving at the bar. Eventually the lady from the back of the restaurant came to help her in the bar but completely ignored me. After 10 minutes of waiting to be seen, I got a message from my friend who was unbeknownst to me, right at the back of the restaurant where she had been sat by said member of staff all on her own. It was that much out of the way that I hadn’t even realised she was there! We moved to a table nearer to the bar to at least be part of some sort of atmosphere and we waited to be approached but we soon realised that was unlikely to happen any time soon as the bar had gotten busy and it was only the two member of staff there. And I hadn’t realised that it must be under new management as it was a different menu and much more limited and basic. So after all that, we decided to leave. Such a shame as alban well was always such a fab little place with great food. What’s happened to it?!!

Went to Alban’s Well for a meal on recommendation from a friend. Took the kids. Food and service was great. Kat and her team went above and beyond. Josh was a gentleman and made sure we were well looked after. Will be returning again very soon!

Had a lovely beef Sunday roast - good selection of wine, friendly service and a warm enviroment. My only complaint would be they offer a nut roast however all their potaotes are cooked in goose fat so my boyfriend isn't able to enjoy one of their roasts!

We enjoyed a delicious Sunday roast yesterday, the hummus starter was homemade and lovely, our roast lamb and veg was excellent and really enjoyable, homemade apple crumble to share was delicious!!

Customer service was appalling Asked for vodka lime and lemonade Got a drink that tasted of fruit When I questioned it the barman said it was a grey goose. I went to the area where he poured it and the only vodka was a grey goose with peach which he denied giving me. Waited another 5 minutes for them to get a bottle of Smirnoff and pour my drink Will never go back even though we are in town every week

Have been in a few times over the last couple of weeks. Then we came with my partner and her 2 friends for a meal today as we've heard great things recently. Firstly inside wow its honestly beautiful and very welcoming. The staff were lovely when greeted and to be fair through-out the whole evening. Food was honestly outstanding, cocktails as well amazing and very well balanced.

We held our Works Christmas Celebration at the Albans Well. Cat and the team couldn’t do more for us. The food, service and atmosphere made for an amazing evening. We had our own space, it was agreed that we were able to bring in some entertainment for the evening (Casino Tables) and we had really fun evening. All made possible by the team. Would highly recommend if you are wanting to organise and host a large group of people.

They were particularly busy, as a result the service was slow. The waitress came over to us multiple times to apologise for the delay which was appreciated. I can look past this as the feel of the place is a comfortable area to be in Food, whilst delicious, was not completely worth the money. In our case we were unhappy with the steak. The item cost £27 and only came with a single sad looking mushroom, tomato and chips. Steak however was cooked very well but it would have been nice to have more veg or veg on menu as a side. This was a completely different experience to what we had last year which had efficient catering and a thoughtfully put together menu, that was quite simply delectable. This experience is what attracted us to come back again, Appreciate that the menus will change from time to time however this change was noticeably negative. Overall the place is warm and comfortable, staff are friendly and attentive. I feel that they're letting themselves down with the menu and what they deliver. Will come back again in the next season and see what's new.

Great place to stop and have a drink and food. We had such a love experience in this place with the food and service. And you are in the heart of St Albans, full of shops and places to visit as well. Love it!
