Al Forno Italian Kitchen in South Lakeland

We booked this place online, received reminders of the booking and it was only on turning up to eat did we find out it was closed indefinitely. There's clearly some automated booking system still active so be warned. Shame it’s closed as the place actually looked really cozy.

This isn’t a traditional Italian setting. Yellow seems to be the theme… Dimmer lighting may set a better mood. A candle on a table would be nice… Went for the steak on a bed of rocket and regretted it.

Lovely little Italian in sedburgh. Not many other places near by so it does a roaring trade, make sure to book! Watch out for the starters too they are HUGE. Fast and friendly service, family run business. The pizzas are what they do best and are absolutely delicious.

In the heart of Sedbergh, this Italian restaurant has that authentic feel that I love. Food is good and pizzas excellent. Lovely people too.

The menu is mostly pizza with a few other dishes. It is run by an italian chef and is as good as we've eaten in Italy over the years. You'll not be disappointed we went twice!

Visited before and happy to come back for more. This is not a fine-dining experience but is good at what it does - mainly pizza and pasta, but also other dishes. Very popular so you'll need to book. Service was good, although our drinks order was forgotten and we had to remind the waitress. But overall great fun and good food

The food was really very good, the staff could not be rated more highly only one grumble the lack of wine on the wine list. Late in the year but no reasons for "not available" Still well recommended

My husband and I visited last night,a very warm welcome as soon as we entered the restaurant, lovely busy atmosphere too. We shared the Antipasti which was generous. I had a delicious ceaser salad and my husband had chilli pasta which was also scrumptious! Only a little room left to share a pudding. We didn’t feel rushed at all which was nice . The price was good considering what we have spent in other eateries whilst away and this meal was by far the best ! Would definitely go back and happy to recommend to friends and family.

A very popular find pleased we had booked in advance as very busy. Great staff, friendly and enthusiastic. A good choice of dishes to be chosen from including a small but good wine list. We all chose the PARMIGIANA DI MELANZANE, it was very tasty although we suspected some cheddar had crept into the dish. A great choice for us in Sedburgh and would recommend to you too! We thought it be fairly priced too.

We were a party of 16 friends who shared a set menu of starters, pizzas & pasta. The whole evening was super - great staff who were pleasant, knowledgable & patient with our large party. An amazing variety of food - delicious & served with beautiful presentation & care. Gluten free diets were easily catered for & nothing was too much trouble. The puddings, coffee & wine flowed & we were under no pressure to leave at all - even at 11pm. This really felt like a restaurant where the owners are present & at the heart of a great team. Good luck to you all & if you’re reading this - stop right now & book - you won’t regret it!!

Absolutely wonderful. Great servive, lovely food and atmosphere made for a wonderful evening. Pizza was tasty and authentic Italian. Desert was lovely too. Thoroughly recommended

Second time to use this restaurant while in Sedbergh and would highly recommend. Food and the service were top notch and had a lovely experience in the restaurant. We had four mains and drinks with a bottle of wine and found it great value for the size of the portions and quality.

This place gets very busy so book in advance. We couldn’t get a table so opted for takeaway. The interior and ambience of this restaurant seemed really nice and the aroma of the place was very Italian. Sadly our food was very average. Garlic bread was salty, dry and not very garlicky. Ravioli was just ok according to my fellow diner but my lasagna was so tasteless I actually thought I may have covid. Not sure if it was supposed to be vegetarian but I saw no meat in it whatsoever. Disappointing , and only given a 3 star due to the attractive venue and friendly staff.

I’m rather partial to an Italian restaurant so we decided to call in whilst staying in the area. Good range of food on the menu and a good range of drinks is available. One couple had a starter to share, which given the large portions was probably a better idea than having one each! The wife had the bread and oil dip starter which was massive. I had calamari which can easily be over cooked and become rubbery. Certainly not the case here; excellent. All portions were of a larger size and everything was both tasty and well cooked (a bit like ourselves after a few too many glasses of wine). The staff were mostly young and seemed to lack a little in the experience department but that did not detract from their attentiveness and politeness. They do their generation proud.Overall a very good restaurant and highly recommended.

How to start this badly experience…Let start by the only positive points Caesar salad and antipasti board wasn’t bad at all pretty enjoyable Ordered a buratta and a mozzarella arrived , sent back the chef told us is a type of buratta… refused to have that excuse, then manager came and explain they run out of products Pizza was just a bread dough cook flat and all dryThen we all have pasta, pure joke for the bolognaise, dry herbes no taste…My fruits di mare had only one calamari and king prawns became shrimps … When I asked the waitress if that normal , she answered me we was the last table of the weekend So I did ask if for that we don’t deserve to be serve properly And she answered yes Really don’t recommend that place

We visited this restaurant a couple of times during our holiday in Sedbergh last week. On both occasions the food was very good and service excellent.

Really enjoyed our meal. Service was very good and swift.Pizza’s excellent and in truth my wife’s vegetarian Calzone could very easily have served two people comfortably as it was huge! Good side salad and a fine pale ale on draft.

Utterly fantastic from start to finish. The service was Sublime, the staff were attentive and prompt throughout. All three meals were cooked to perfection and none of the party had any complaints. Would revisit, great asset to sedbergh.

A pleasant little place with tables well distanced and we visited on a warm evening when the doors were kept open, which was welcome.That staff are young and a bit hesitant but very helpful, despite our odd requests!We shared calamari to start and they were tender and delicious.We each ordered the pizza 'Italia' and I must say, the combination of toppings was a real hit. However, mention has to be made if the dough which was EXCELLENT! I have lived in Italy and it's a rare thing to enjoy a pizza that's light, crispy without being in the least bit doughy.Very good indeed.

The word “sorry” was the most frequent spoken by staff in this restaurant. “Sorry we don’t have any bitter lemon/ soda water/ rosé”. Sorry I spilled your wine. Sorry we made you a pizza rather than the calzone you ordered”. Our visit to Al Forno for a birthday meal was a major disappointment. Although there were plenty of staff, they seemed to be completely disorganised. The vegan options mentioned in the sample menus on the website weren’t available and we were restricted to pizza. A pizza funghi had little more than one sliced mushroom on it and, as I said, the calzone didn’t make it past a pizza. There was no vegan option for desert. In their defence, it was just two weeks since lockdown was lifted and they were busy with a takeaway service as well. However, one would have thought diners who have reserved a table might take priority over takeaway customers.

The food was fantastic. The children's portions were very generous! The staff and restaurant were very pleasant. It was fully booked and the phone was ringing off the hook for take out! Well deserved! One change that could be beneficial to customers would be to bring the children's meals out first. They brought the adults and there was a small delay for the children's which resulted in a few missing crusts off my pizza!

Went tonight with my wife and son. We are on holiday in Sedbergh and it was our wedding anniversary. The staff are so professional and friendly. The food was quite simply fantastic. A marvellous evening. Thanks to you all.

We visited Sedbergh during the May bank holiday week and enjoyed our pizza from here. The order process was simple with a quick call in advance to the restaurant. The pizzas were ready for our allocated collection slot and the Covid procedures were very well implemented. The pizzas were large and tasty with plenty of toppings. Would recommend and return.

Absolutely beautiful authentic Italian meal delivered hot and fresh to our door. A feast of pizza, chicken, fries, nibbles and treat box dessert. Querky and fun treats, kids loved opening the many boxes to reveal a variety of tasty Italian quisine. Highly recommended, service outstanding, friendly, made and delivered with care! I am not normally a great fan of Italian food but the rest of my family are. I had the sea food risotto. I t was a very good meal with a good sized portion.Despite current restrictions it came across as a very friendly restaurant.

Al Forno were brilliant at coping with the Covid restrictions whilst still making the dining experience enjoyable. Calzone was great, as were the starters. Would definitely recommend

We booked a table last minute on a Friday night, we felt very safe; the tables were well distance and the staff all very covid aware - masks, sanitiser etc. We each had a pizza and they were both delicious, perfectly cooked and made with good quality ingredients.

I try Parmigiana everywhere I go ... & this is the best in Cumbria! There’s lots of other choice too ... pizzas & pasta of course, but also tuna steak or sirloin for the meat eaters. Interesting authentic starters & side dishes. Gluten free pizza options available. Staff are lovely & keen to help.

Having booked on line two weeks ago as we are on a road trip around Scotland and the North, we was looking forward to good Italian cooking. Let me tell you we was not disappointed and enjoyed both antipasto and mains plus dessert. I had calamari my wife had garlic mushrooms both were fine. The best was to come my calzone was both flavoursome and the dough was excellent, my wife had the strips of steak on a bed of rocket this is a dish of few components but when executed this well it doesn’t need anymore.What made the meal more enjoyable was the service hats off to the bubbly young waitress that served our meal you made the meal even more enjoyable thanks.

Lets be clear this is a good average place and you are likely to be happy. The staff are friendly, the covid arrangements are good. But its basic Italian with some careless cooking when busy. We had 8 servings over a week in which one of us had inedible spinach because of too much chilly (a bad case of swollen lips) and one of the spaghetti marinara was over vinegared. But terrific pizzas and a very good plate of olives and bread.

We ordered 2 pizzas and calamari rings, the pizzas were soggy and didn't have much flavour. The calamari again wasn't very flavourful but was OK for a weekend binge. Won't be in any rush to visit restaurant and eat in.

Came here for a meal with my partner on a Wednesday night and the food was brilliant. The service was really good and the whole atmosphere was great. Look forward to returning.

Visited with my boyfriend for a date night, had garlic bread pizza for starter which set the tone for the rest of the night. Then had pizza and steak which were both of great quality. Finished with ice cream which was delicious. Lovely waiter was very friendly and helpful. Gorgeous food with great pricing. Great range of options. Obvious safety measures for COVID-19 in place.

Friendly service and fantastic food! This was our first visit and we would definitely recommend a visit! The garlic bread with cheese was delicious and our pizzas freshly prepared and tasty - we especially liked the crispy, thin base.

Went with my husband for a quiet meal out whilst staying in Sedburgh. The food was beautiful and the young man who did the front of house was exceptional. He was very polite, hard working and made the visit even more special. Well done. Will definitely return.

We dined here as a family and the dishes we had ranged from lasagne, spaghetti bolognese, pollo crema, pizzas and a few others. The food and service was excellent. The quality of the food was of a very high standard. Would highly recommend this restaurant. Cheers to Kate and all of the staff.

For a special evening out with the family choose Al Fornos. You want authentic pizza or Italian food this is the place to go. Not pricey either. The lovely village setting and cosy restaurant makes you want to come back again and again

Awesome Diavlo best pizza in Cumbria, authentic Italian chef using Italian ingredients, place has ambience which is lacking in this area and greatly appreciated, keep it up Al Forno

Reasonably friendly greeting and we were soon seated. The warning signs were the length of time it took to get a drink and place our order...There was a large family group at a table right in the middle, who all seemed to know the few staff on duty. It developed into a shambles with wailing infants and uncontrolled toddlers running around the restaurant.Eventually they started to leave in dribs and drabs but the they spoilt most of the night. The delay in our starter arriving was so long that we had set a time limit to ourselves and we going to pay for the drinks and walk out. The starter arrived about 30 seconds before we reached that point.Part of the problem is that the place also does takeaway food with a regular stream of people arriving to collect or place orders and wait for it. This appears to take priority over the diners both in the staff taking the orders and also in the kitchen. The final straw, as we were sitting through another long delay before our mains appeared, was the arrival of the loud mouthed "village idiot" who installed himself by the bar with a beer awaiting take-away food and proceeded to have long loud conversations with the staff who were trying to do their jobs. The food when it did arrive was actually reasonable, the menu is also quite interesting and varied.Perhaps we were unlucky and got a bad night but oh woe, it was a long tedious evening. Never ever again.

Had a fantastic meal (homemade) pizza and it was fantastic!! I as fairly busy but didn’t take to long to get my pizza, while waiting I got a show time IPA beer and it was worth the wait! Fantastic service and fantastic staff, beer and pizza was amazing as well!!! Definitely worth the visit!

As locals we can’t express enough how amazing it is to have this traditional little Italian in our town.Myself and my wife visit regularly with our three children and are always made to feel relaxed and welcome. Food is always spot on and the service is so friendly and efficient.Highly recommend*****

Visited for a meal whilst staying in Kendal, was about 30mins drive but definitely worth it, all the food was very tasty and the young lady who served us was very welcoming and very chatty, we had a lovely night with a great meal.

The staff were lovely which is why I gave 3 stars instead of two. Really nice banter and made us feel very welcome. The food however left a lot to be desired The starters were fine but the pizzas weren’t good at all. Rather tasteless and the salad was awful (not sure how a salad could be so bad but it was). Nice atmosphere with friendly staff but based on food alone I would avoid Chose somewhere else if visiting. This was our last night meal and we were disappointed with hugely overpriced substandard food.

It was a pleasant surprise to find this restaurant. The menu is limited, so my expectations were high. The pasta was cooked perfectly but the sauce was only heat. No taste of garlic or herbs, or even tomato. It should have heat, but not to the exclusion of all else.

Pizzas? Poor. Typically an overload of cheese. Pollo pizza was tasteless with cubes of frozen chicken. The aubergine dish should have been renamed tin of tomatoes and cheese (with negligible and thin slices of aubergine). The potatoes with rosemary were covered in cheese and tasted if they had been roasted/cooked more than once. Couldn't taste the rosemary.

A very relaxing end to a week in the area. Our meal was well cooked, service was rapid and attentive and our waiter was fun and helpful. Recommended!

This would have been a lovely meal if two small children had been kept under control it was like sitting in a room of screeching parrots unable to hold a conversation due to no parental control I left with my ears ringing.

Whist on holiday in Sedbergh, my son turned 14, it was his choice to go to Al Forno Italian Kitchen and what a choice well made. We booked a table for 6 via email earlier in the day. We were made to feel welcome from the moment we entered, we had a starter between us followed by 6 main meals, all with the exception of my now 14 year old, were stuffed and couldn’t eat dessert. He went with just an ice cream which was delivered with birthday candles. All of the staff were incredibly friendly and provided such a good service to us all. The food was incredible and the complimentary Limoncellos topped off a great night. On our last night we opted to go to the Red Lion opposite for some food and a pint, however being greeted by no barmen and a cash only sign we changed our minds, back to Al Forno it was. I entered and asked if a table for 6 was possible, it was looking busy and chances didn’t look great, but a smiling welcoming face from the kitchen said a table would be found, we soon seated and a bottle of red was ordered, again the service was amazing, the food incredible and a good night was had in what has quickly become our favourite little Italian. Any return trip to Cumbria and the lakes will definitely involve a meal in Al Forno, keep up the good work.

Had a picnic in Sedbergh and just wanted a coffee so walked along the high street and found this lovely place. I can only honestly review this restaurant on its service which was outstanding. 2 cappuchinos served promptly but what really impressed me was the fact that a jug of water and glasses were brought to the table without us asking - having travelled widely this is common practice in other countries but not so much here in the uk, you have to ask for it. So top marks Al Forno for being ahead of the game. Incidentally, the menu looked wonderful and interesting and if ever we need a meal in Sedbergh, we'll be heading your way.

We were looking for a nice comforting meal after a day mooching about in the rain, and this fitted the bill perfectly. Despite having been told that the garlic bread starter was big enough to share, I was still surprised to receive a full-size pizza base smothered in cheese and generously wiped with garlic; almost a meal in itself.

Ate here last night with my husband and we both really enjoyed our meal. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I had the homemade ravioli stuffed generously with spinach and cheese and although I had to ask for more melted butter to go over it, it was delicious as was the aubergine parmigiana had by my husband. I’d definitely go back here if I was eating out in Sedbergh again.

All the food was top quality, our group enjoyed pizza, calzone, Spag Bol and carbonara. Initially we were seated next to quite a large, noisy group, but a quick word with the lovely waitress saw us quickly moved to a quieter spot towards the rear of the restaurant. After a week of hotel food and pub grub it was a refreshing change to enjoy fresh, Italian food in the picturesque village of Sedbergh. Would definitely return!

Clean and bright restaurant. Food ok, service poor. Asked to keep our cutlery from starters for our main course as they were running out! Put of by the young waitress constantly patting a guest's dog. I'm not sure she had any idea of hygiene implications. A better review would be here had we not witnessed the constant dog petting.

We stayed with friends in lovely Sedbergh who only recently purchased a second home there. Sedbergh is a hidden gem and on our experience so are the people who live there. We went to Al Forno on our friends recommendation and it did not fail to deliver. The atmosphere is lovely and the staff were very welcoming especially Zoe who was our waitress. We had a great meal with the food being delicious and we had a very enjoyable evening. We will be visiting Sedbergh again and Al Forno we certainly get another visit.

This restaurant is in an elevated position with a lovely view of the church through big plate glass windows. The staff were cheery, engaging and very efficient. We were welcomed like old friends and we've never been before!

The restauarant managed to fit us in at short notice, although quite busy, and we enjoyed the meal. The pizza and the pasta dish were delicious and not too large. Desserts were also very good and staff were friendly.

As I was looking for something other than the standard English dinner I thought I should try it.The antipasti was disappointing. The spaghetti bolognese is a lot of ground beef in bad sauce.

Found this place last year so decided to try again a year later.Booked a table as can get very busy in the evenings. Still serves great fresh home cooked Italian food. Inside very neat, relaxing and space. Tables set lovely. Staff very helpful, friendly, Menu has plenty to choose from and there is a specials board too. We had mushroom starters. Very tasty. Picked a mains from the special board. Excellent. Just wish we lived down the road as would eat there very often.

Three of us had a lovely Italian meal, better than any that I had in Sicily! The atmosphere was really friendly, and the restaurant was busy, being a Friday night. We never felt at all rushed. Puddings were very generous, light and fluffy. The space was large and well decorated. The owners had kept the original windows that look out onto the street and the church.
