Chicken and lamb was very dry, mushroom rice was awful, popodoms were nice and so was garlic bread,gone down in quality since last time we visited

Lovely welcome and great service from our lady waitress. Food was amazing. Loved the phal challenge. Fish and the chops for our starters were so so good. Considering it was Ramadan and the place was packed the food came out quickly and was delicious. Service was 1st class. Another great visit.

Very good starter of chicken pakora followed by a lovely curry with a very large naan. I had some chips which were also very good. Really enjoyed the meal.

Used to be our favourite curry place! Its now Cafe Akbars, completely lost its glitzy feel, no alcohol anymore which is fine but no branded drinks either except Iron Bru! Very odd. Felt overcrowded and grubby and definitely more like a cafe. Food was still nice but could have done with being warmer. Dont think we will return. Why they dont update the actual Akbars website to reflect the changes I dont know, according to the waiter its been like that for 8 months

We have been coming here for years and always loved it however I feel the place has gone downhill, the cutlery was dirty, we were not asked for drinks, we were not able to book and they no longer serve alcohol, the drinks were 'in house' we asked for a coke and was given two cans of Barr cola with a straw and no glasses, they charged us £5.50 for two cans of nasty coke, it costs £1.99 for a pack of 6 online. the toilets are dirty and it just does not have the same feel about it, the food was nice but it is a shame the rest has changed, wont be going back for a while :(

We were a large party, but each one of us was unhappy with the food, bhaji omg never tasted one like it mega hot!!! And rock hard, all our curry dishes had very little sauce, mushroom rice hard to spot the mushroom, only plus was staff very accommodating and did an excellent job serving us, all in all disappointed as we thought it was a Bradford curry house and expecting gorgeous food, my opinion AVOID SAVE YOUR MONEY...

Food here is always amazing! Staff super friendly too. Only bad part is not very clean, and the toilets are very nasty. Will go back but please clean properly.

Akbars has lost most of its initial appeal, when the place was buzzing, the staff pleasant and friendly and the food exceptional. Nowadays, it’s become your average Indian restaurant. Boring atmosphere, hapless waiting staff and very average food that’s often too spicy to enjoy. I think this will have been the last time I waste my time and money.

Terrible experience. Food was inedible, it was so hot and spicy. Staff were unfriendly and unhelpful. Wouldn’t go there again.

Read the reviews and was slightly apprehensive. We are both seasoned curry fans and have eaten in many restaurants including Akbars in Birmingham, York etc. The curry didn’t disappoint t at all in spite of the last few negative reviews. It really was very good food. Moon our waiter was very polite, professional and made some excellent recommendations. I would visit again and happily recommend.

Worst indian food ever. Never had a tikka masala like this, hardly no sauce and all you could taste was salt.I had to send it back. The jalfrezi had no onions, peppers, sauce, a horrible grey yellowy colour and again was hardly no sauce. The rice was brown and stodgy with no flavour. The only nice thing was the poppadoms and chutney and the naan but with no hardly no sauce in the dishes half of it was left. The staff were pleasant though and apologetic . I Tbh, i would say the food seemed to be precooked in probably a large quantity and then microwaved. It's not the kind of restaurant we are used to where the food is cooked fresh to order. Would never go again......

I went with friends on Tuesday 28th March. The food was so spicy hot that it was inedible. I ordered onion bajees which were super hot and asked a member of staff if he could give me a replacement dish of bagees. His response was put some mint sauce on it. Even the butter chicken which is normally a mild dish was too hot for me. Not a good experience and I wouldn’t go back.

Food was outstanding. Ordered far to much but was still really cheap for the 2 of us, been many times but this was the best the lamb shank was delicious. Nan bread was so so big had to take it home, thanks for great evening

5 diners who all know their stuff. The starters, the plates, the food, the place , all were COLD.We might have well as sat outside on the street in the freezing temperatures.. Certainly not a warm welcoming ambiance.

Akbar's Middlesbrough is the best Indian restaurant I had ever visited in the UK. As I am a vegetarian, a variety of dishes are available to taste. I ordered paneer balti it was very tasty. I would like to thank them for their best service.

Went with family recently to Akbars Middlesbrough. Must say the food was terrible. The chicken dish was poor and the peshwari naan bread was half empty. As a previous regular customer I will most certainly not be going anymore

I have just returned from one of the worst meals I have ever had. Once a meal at Akbar's was one to really look forward to. The food was really good and the whole ambiance was enough to overlook the fact that the waiters would not acknowledge the ladies in the group but not any more. The starters came 2 minutes after the popadoms came not 20 minutes as the waiter had said. They were not only Luke wam but much much smaller than in previous visits. The main course was not much better with the table garlic naan being both burnt and bereft of garlic. The chips were cold and jalfrazi flovourless. Now we come to Covid and social distancing. Over the last weeks we have been to many establishments both within and outside the eat out to help out scheme. In most (the Crown at Kirklevington, the fox covert in Yarm, Vadah and TFIs Stockton - to pick out the best) tried to create distance between the groups but there was no such here. There were no fewer tables than before - in fact it seemed like there were just more people being crammed in with upstairs being opened. This will be the last time I visit this restaurant and I would urge others to avoid this place and find alternatives.

My husband and I visited for the first time today and were both very impressed. Reassuring safety measures with registering, keeping guests apart and plenty of sanitisers. All staff behind visors or masks. The food was delicious; we both ordered Baltis (chicken & prawn and chicken tikka & keema) with naan breads. The naans were huge and incredibly tasty and the food superb. Ample portions; we walked out with takeaway containers and leftover naans wrapped in foil. Staff was very friendly and the service brilliant. We can definitely recommend this place and we will be back!!!

Me and 2 friends visited on Wednesday. After being seated, it took about 15 minutes for our order to be taken. Then our cutlery came and one of the spoons had food stuck to it. Many tables which turned up after us got served faster. After an hour and a half our food finally came out, and it did did taste very nice. After asking for the bill, we waited 35 minutes, despite telling them that we had a movie to watch at the cinema that we needed to leave for. During the time we waited for the bill, 3 waiters were asked and we were told “2 minutes” each time. Overall, the service was way too slow and they let too many people into the restaurant. Social distancing measures were good though and the food tasted nice. However, we did miss our film by an hour and a half...

Booked table for 17.30, sat down straight away despite being told of a 15 minute wait.Social distancing floor markings, some staff got bit too close at times. Good quality was much better than previous visit, onion bhaji certainly better than it used to be. Karahi King prawn tikka massala could have been hotter. Disappointed half of main meals came out 5 minutes after first 2 meals had been served. Lamb chops were OK, 9 in the portion which was plenty. Naan bread excellent.30 minute wait for the bill, kept getting told 5 minutes.They were busy, long queue outside when we came out. Not bad 3 courses for family of 4!!

Visited with a group of friends and ordered a variety of dishes. Chicken wings and chicken biryani was very good. Lamb chops were slightly small in size, waiter was patient and recommended some curries which were all very tasty. Strawberry mocktail was decent.

We booked a table for 7pm and eventually were seated at 730pm. We then had to ask for a menu. Poppadoms and pickles were offered as way of an apology. These arrived and we had to ask for plates and cutlery and to order drinks. We ordered food which finally arrived 75 minutes after we had been seated, by which time it was really to late to eat. Social distancing was a joke. There were too many tables and not enough staff - may people were complaining all evening.

Booked table for 18 30. Had to wait outside and then inside for 30min. Very crowded inside and music really loud although they did turn it down when I asked. The staff were great and doing their best but very understaffed. Food took 75 min to arrive and people around us were leaving before their food arrived and complaining constantly. Food delicious when arrived and we all enjoyed although my keema nan did not arrive until we were ready to pay the bill. The toilets were absolutely filthy! Thick dust and cobwebs on doors and filthy floors. Broken toilet seats and toilet paper strewn all over. They cannot have been deepcleaned prior to re opening as dust was so thick.

After pre booking a table for a family meal we waited almost an hour near the bar, after eventually being seated we waited another 25 minutes for not even a menu or a drink being offered. After waiting this long with no excuse or apology we decided to leave ordering nothing and the children not eating. Absolute joke, ruined our family night, would never go again.

Well what can I say it’s absolutely disgusting the worst service I’ve had all table and chairs are broken very slow at bar service knives/folks/plates weren’t washed properly please think twice befor going for food.Now geting to the food the man breads where like cardboard the curry and corms where like water there chicken what absolutely disgusting was like sloppy fish i couldn’t believe my eyes this is Middlesbrough only.No face masks worn no toilet paper or soap has has got COVID-19 writing all over it !!!!!!!!

Dined with 4 friends, nice big varied menu, quick friendly service. Lovely food, but the unique selling point is the size of the naan!

So good to be bacK after quarantine, Service was great, just as punctual and friendly as always, the whole place felt very clean with a good distance between tables. All staff were wearing visors/masks and gloves, and it everything was cleaned between cUstomers. I’m a bit germ paranoid but I felt very comfortable in akbars. The Veg Makhani and garlic naan was incredible as always, I’d urge meat eaters to try the makhani or to suggest making a meat dish with that sauce.

Visited for grandsons birthday atmosphere very nice served efficiently food was tasty but Some of the dishes were not piping hot when they came no point in sending them back as we wanted to share our food

Visited here Thursday evening for a Birthday night.Skipped poppadoms and went straight for the starters as we were a little late arriving 22:30.Starters and mains all came together meaning main course was cold by the time starters had been finished. Asked to doggy bag mains / rice / chips & bread. Complained but got told chefs were finishing.Do not eat in here if you arrive after 22:00.They say they are open until 23:30 but they are not.Starters were really tasty 10/10Warmed up food was 1/10 the next day.We won’t be back in a hurry.

All they are good at is taking people’s money !!! 9-10 take away orders are always incorrect !! Either something’s missing or it’s not cooked how requested and then don’t rectify it !! Absolutely appalling customer service for take out customers and no rectification or compensation at all ! They missed things from my order I asked at the till to check my order , they didn’t allow me saying it’s to busy when I get home my foods not cooked properly and items are missing ! They then expect us to drive ten mins to cook the food they have already given me and bring it back home !! A poxy alpogy didn’t replace my missing 2 items and put the phone down on me ! I went into the restraunt showing them the slop sick looking liver they gave me and as they messed my dinner with my kids I demanded a refund which they would not expect !! My foods gone cold it’s not right and your not giving me a refund or giving me my full warm order again !! No customer service skills greedy people !! I paid £60 for that food it didn’t come for free !! And when you call Akbar’s head office they are just as bad !! Don’t except any liability don’t even offer a complimentary meal to replace out inconviece nothing !! Disgusting horrible do not eat from there !! Rotten onions in salad !! Glass in liver tikka take out and many many more issues o would for the owner to call me !! Or anyone in fact but no this review would get looked over and as usual nothing happen about it again !

Had the dopiaza, family naan and rice. One of the nicest dopiaza's i've ever had! Lovely restaurant, nice atmosphere and attentive staff. Bar prices are a little steep but it wouldn't put me off returning.

I met a friend here in November. He was visiting his wife’s family. We had a great meal. Excellent quality and service. Not expensive either. Pity I was working night shift. We had to rush a bit for me to get back to bed for work. I will visit again when I have more time.

Visited late in the evening, welcomed by nice staff, attentive, helpful and service was quick, and accurate. The food however was not as tasty as previous visits, rice all tasted same, even though all different, nan was nice and poppadoms and pickles tasty but main was disappointing.

Ordered a vegetable makani. It was very runny, contained a tin of peas and one courgette. It had so much food colouring in it that it was bright Barbie pink and I’m sure it would have glowed in the dark. Tasted of sugar and nothing else.

This restaurant has a great lively atmosphere and I couldn’t fault the service as the waiter was very attentive.

Visited here last night for husband's birthday. I ordered a Balti and asked for it mild when it came it was that hot I couldn't eat it so sent it back, by this point our waiter had disappeared. The curry was brought back and still as hot as ever. Complained again and manager came over, was told that couldn't have it too mild as Balti then wouldn't taste of anything. Did get my curry for free but didn't eat the rice and they took rest of food away so didn't even get chance to finish naan bread. Very disappointed and dont think will be going back again in a hurry

The food was good, I would not consider it to be amazing. When asking for the food to be taken away they forgot to box 2 items and when I called up the next day when I noticed they asked the same question 3 times with 3 different people about where I sat and who served me. They were really difficult and they would not deliver this 5mins down the road to where I lived and refused to accept fault as well as stating that this has never happened before. The customer service was appalling and because of this I would never go back.

Nice buzzing atmosphere here and we were greeted promptly and with a smile. The service was fantastic with an amazing choice of food to order. They also sold Cobra Zero so a bonus for me. I ordered a prawn vindaloo with mushroom rice and a hanging bread to share. Finished with a generous portion of ice cream. An excellent experience overall - thank you.

We ate here last night, having not been in a while. Naans, curry and rice, all great, and great service. Our one concern, we ordered four currys, three were chicken tikka in rogan josh, masala and balti. All were red, identical, and the same taste. Left us baffled. I enjoyed mine, but certainly not a balti. The chef even served them out by naming each, no idea how he managed that. My friend next to me had another balti, his was brown and looked like previous. A most strange experience. But food was enjoyed nevertheless.

First time in here after a recommendation & couldn't have been more impressed.

We don't usually go for Indian food but so glad we tried here. Amazing food with brilliant service from start to finish. Well worth a try! Prices extremely reasonable too , especially for how much you get!! Will definitely go back again.

Orders for drinks and poppadum's were taken and brought to the table fairly quickly. We then waited 75 min for the main course to arrive with a waiter constantly apologising and saying it would be out shortly. During this period other tables had arrived and been served. Asked for manager who was apologetic and provided a free round of drinks and said food would be out in minutes. 15 minutes later with still no sign of the food we gave up and settled the bill for what we'd had. Felt reluctant to even pay this but they would not reduce the bill. Will never visit again.

The restaurant was quite busy when we arrived so might be worth making a reservation on a busy night. The staff was very friendly and most importantly the food was very tasty!! It tasted great overall. Highly recommended this place for curry.

We had to wait about half an hour for our food. We were informed by a very friendly server but the food just wasn’t worth the wait. The curry was very greasy, the chips luke warm and the naan tasteless. Just not to our taste at all.

Was up in Middlesborough and checked out this city centre place. Service is v friendly and always eager to help. We could not eat all the food and it was all parcelled up for the next day - waste not, want not. Kids got lollies at the end.

We have now visited all the Akbar branches apart from Bradford. The food is consistently good. The daal was a little on the sweet side but we were warned by the waiter. Service was very good. It did not disappoint. The kids enjoyed the food.

First time me and my partner went to Akbars. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who likes currys or would like to try a new curry. We are definitely going back. The waitor who served us knew his food and recommended us the lamb chop, fish covered in spices. He recommended which curry because we were both debating on which curry to have.

We went here around 7.30pm on a Tuesday evening an was seated quite quickly the staff are lovely an the food was amazing would definitely recommend going very good for value too

Have visited this particular restaurant with family on many occasions. What a fantastic place. Great ambience, delicious food and very hospitable. Food is always to a great standard. Reasonable prices and just a great place for a curry.

Visited on 17 June 2019.Family visit 4 adults each with different meal.The food was cooked to perfection and the spicy lamb shank melted in the mouth.The staff were very friendly,the restaurant was spotless and the ladies and gents toilets were spotless with high quality fittings.

Visited here tonite.. And all I can say is absolutely terrible.. Got a lamb and spinach balti.. Never had anything so dry in all my life.. I always get a balti or bhuna and am rarely dissapointed but this time is different.. What a waste of money I barely touched it... I would avoid this place.. there's so many other really good curry restaurants in Middlesbrough that are so worth a visit

My god. The curry here is unreal. They will change the spicing to suit you and will even sing happy birthday. May I recommend family Naans that come on skewers. Delicious!

Visited on a Saturday night table of 3 without a booking. Nice looking, large restaurant in a lively central road. Very busy so service was a little slower but it was to be expected. Food was good and fairly priced. Our waiter Hassan was the perfect server and a credit to the restaurant. Good choice of paneer dishes too.

Spent 3 nights in Middlesbrough on business. Decided to visit Akbars on day one. Food was so good visited on the remaining 2 days. Sampled 3 different dishes - Akbar-e-Balti, Chilli Chicken and lamb shank all of excellent quality, taste and ingredients. The nan bread was served on a skewer and was superb. One will be enough for 3 people.

Having not been for a while we thought we'd give it a try. Things had changed King Prawn Tikka starter not what it used to be, nowhere near as tasty.

I went with a group of friends, for one of our regular curry night out's. Very disappointed to find out they only served bottled beers at what I thought were over the top prices.Small bottles of larger beer were overt £4.00 which is about the price of a pint at other restaurants
