We had vouchers for afternoon tea with prosecco ,a special present.when we arrived we had to wait for 20 minutes in the lounge and had to tell the concierge that nobody had spoken to us.The room was really cold ,when we asked to be moved to another part of room we were told that it was colder in the other room.the afternoon tea was really very poor and we will not be back.

I purchased a voucher for Afternoon Tea here as a nice wee treat for my partner and I. We were very much looking forward to a nice quiet, and very rare, lunch together, however when we arrived a very helpful gentleman at reception showed us the way through to the restaurant, when we opened the door to enter we were very abruptly told "we are closed!" despite having a booking, we waited out in the bar area until we were allowed to enter. Our quiet lunch together just wasn't to be as there was some kind of conference going on and a very large and loud group were taking up all but 5 tables in the restaurant ...... The rude and abrupt service didn't get any better unfortunately, Angelika (who was also the young lady who told us they were closed) was very uninterested in any of the customers and our one half cup of coffee we were given along with our food, was laid down on the table without a word. Such a shame, if I had been made aware that there was an event on I would have booked a different day. On the plus side the food was really tasty and plenty to fill you up.

When we arrived at the crowne plaza we were very impressed with how aesthetically pleasing the venue was. The staff at reception were very kind and welcoming and directed us appropriately. HOWEVER, our experience completely changed after this. We were shown to our table by the waitress - she brought us our tea coffee and selection of food and we had no interaction with her after that (until paying of course) The scones were under done, the sandwich bread was stale, reminiscent of 1990s function sandwiches prepared that morning and left out in the air for the day! The rest of the selection was average at best, although the carrot cake was the one saving grace. I spent 15 minutes attempting to get the attention of the waitress to top up our water, but to no avail. I topped it up myself in the end, unsurprisingly unnoticed by the waitress who was nowhere to be seen. Eventually when she reappeared, random tables got an offer of a coffee top-up, but we were ignored despite our best efforts to get her attention. We then left and went to the till to pay. The waitress did not ask "how was everything" or any other sentiment but instead said "cash or card" and proceeded to overcharge me. I corrected her on the price and she acknowledged her mistake gingerly. Overall and absolutely terrible experience for such a nice upmarket hotel. Visit date 15/02/2020

Purchased a groupon voucher as a Christmas present for my mum. The food looked nothing like the picture on groupon. Horrible sandwiches, bread clearly had been left out as was stale. Cakes were awful. We were so disappointed as the picture on groupon makes it look delicious. Do not go here for afternoon tea!

Visited the Crown Plaza as we had received a Groupon voucher for afternoon tea. Wow, if people spend full price on this, they are being well and truly robbed. Arrived slightly early and were told wait in the bar until our table in the half empty restaurant was ready. We got tucked in a corner just to the left as you enter, right next to another couple. I asked politely if we could move further into the conservatory but told there were no tables available but we could wait. We decided to just sit down. Interestingly 2 couples came in straight after us and lo and behold there were suddenly 2 tables near the windows! Food - 4 very small dry scones, served with jam and cream, 2 egg mayo fingers, 2 ham and chutney fingers and 2 beef and mustardy things. Not appetising and when we asked if we could swap the egg mayo, we were told we couldn't as it came as standard. Also, 2 small meringues with chocolate and a raspberry, a couple of runny creamy things, carrot cake which was the nicest thing and 2 bits of Brownie which I believe to have been made a good few days ago. We didn't eat a lot and noticed that the people around us didn't eat much either. Drinks - the glass of Prosecco was nice but we had to ask for tea and coffee. No one asked if we wanted a refill. Service - the man who seated us wasn't the happiest of men and the younger man who was serving the tea and coffee appeared to be the only person working that day. No-one checked in on us to see if we needed anything, no-one asked if we wanted more tea and coffee, no-one saw us leave. Overall, a terrible waste of money. Crown Plaza you are letting yourself down.

Just returned from afternoon tea at this hotel and what a disappointing experience. On arrival, we were shown to a table right next to another couple, despite there being plenty of room in the restaurant. No one offered to take our coats so we sat with them on the back of our seats for the duration of our visit. Hot chocolate which my daughter requested was clearly instant and didn't taste nice, there was no choice of teas, or explanation of sandwich fillings and cakes available. When I asked if it was possible to get a top up of scones, which were very small, I was told there would be a charge for this, per kitchen policy. Some of the cakes had been warmed up and tasted a bit stale and others looked as if they had been sitting out for a while. There were dirty tables which were left uncleared despite staff being on duty in the restaurant. Very disappointing for what purports to be a 4 star hotel.

Very poor with only one flavour sandwich which we only got 2 small fingers of, served cold coffee and we were seated in a row of tables with 3 other couples all of which arrived at the same time as us whilst the remainder of the dining area empty, we felt we couldn’t have a private conversation and mindful of those sat within a very close proximity. If we hadn’t purchased via Groupon we would’ve definitely requested a refund. On a rating of 1 to 10 I would score it 3 based on the whole visit, I wouldn’t recommend.

Beautiful Georgian hotel with views over the Firth of Forth. Great for pre-theatre meal as well. I had afternoon tea, with the obligatory prosecco, very nice indeed 🥂. Great selection of savouries, including very tasty haggis balls. The staff were very good, nothing was too much trouble. Can recommend and we will definitely go back.

Booked afternoon tea with prosecco in advance and requested no smoked salmon sandwiches and asked for something plain like cheese and tomato in place of them. I was told that was no problem. We arrived about 20 minutes early and were told they could not accommodate us at the moment and to take a seat in the bar and someone would come for us. We sat in the bar and 5 mins after our booking time no one had come for us so I went back to the restaurant and we were shown to our seat. No apology or any acknowledgement of the fact that we had been waiting in the bar. Prosecco arrived along with tea/coffee followed by the cake stand of "delights". Our "delights" consisted of 2 fingers of ham/cheese and chutney sandwiches and 2 fingers of smoked salmon sandwiches. I called the waitress over and explained that I had requested an alternative and she said she would see to this. She removed the stand and returned a short time later with another 2 fingers of ham/cheese and chutney sandwiches! The "delights consisted of , 2 pieces of toasted cheese with chives ( which was tasty), 2 tiny scones each which were rock solid. The cakes, if you could call them cakes were 2 tiny macaroons each, 1 piece of caramel shortbread (which I'm sure was shop bought) cut in half so it was 2 x triangles and 2 tiny pastry cases with crème anglaise on them and a slice of strawberry. I'm sorry but all these establishments that have jumped on the bandwagon of the popularity of afternoon tea need to take a long hard look at themselves. Customers expect some home baking as part of an afternoon tea. Had we been impressed with the service and the offerings we would have stayed longer and perhaps bought a bottle of prosecco and made an afternoon of it but it wasn't a great experience at all. Certainly wouldn't return here as too many excellent afternoon tea options out there. This is one to avoid!

Very disappointed with the afternoon tea. Was a birthday treat and was not what was expected. Asked for 1 to be gluten free. What came out was cakes that looked like they had come from a packet. Did not taste homemade and all looked shabby. We were served cookies with cream on which again looked from a packet and no originality. The sandwiches were served on bread that obviously had been made for sometime. What was worse was the other couples afternoon teas looked better and much more appealing. Got this afternoon tea deal through groupon after researching a nice gift to give and a enjoyable experience but after what was received I think I was missold. You really need to cater better for those with dietary requirements. The only positive thing was the concerige who showed us to a table remembered my name while I was hunting for the toilets. A nice touch.

I bought a deal for my son and Daughter in law who is heavily pregnant . They served salmon ( fresh) which is a no no when pregnant. My son had to g o and find a waiter to get a glass of water for his wife . Bad service and to top it all today I completed this morning and was told a manager would call me back . I am still waiting . It's a shame because we have also had a lovely tea there but I am disgusted with this hotel

Had a lovely relaxed afternoon tea at the Crowne Plaza with friends. The sandwiches, cakes and scones were just lovely. The atmosphere was nice and calming. The staff could not do enough for the customers and this made the whole experience just lovely. I would definitely go back

Booked through a voucher for my birthday by a friend and as with all afternoon tea bookings we were expecting something quite special, unfortunately it was abit of a let down. On a pretty hot day in the their conservatory they were only giving small glasses of water and only topping up when asked, jugs on the tables would be nice. Prosecco was served warm... never a great taste unless it’s chilled. The 3 tier cake stand arrived and selection was ok. Had to ask for tea and coffee... service was lacking. Always think it’s a shame when scones are served with a small tub of squirty cream rather than clotted, seems cheap somehow. One of the savoury bits was a grained roll cut in half with griddled cheese on it.. not really something that is overly special. It also wasn’t hot so cheese dried out. After we had finished we sat with empty plates, glasses and cups until eventually got someone’s attention to ask for another drink. It was a nice afternoon but mainly due to company unfortunately the staff seemed disinterested and they could have made it all so much better.

Booked Afternoon Tea with a glass of Prosecco through a voucher app, was planning a walking visit to the Calton Hill area and this looked like a good stop off point. Hotel is located close to centre but in a quiet mainly residential area. Nice spacious terrace restaurant at back, table of set out ready for our arrival. Staff were very friendly, welcoming and made the whole service very enjoyable. Tea/Coffee, sandwiches and cakes all well presented and very tasty. Enjoyed relaxing after our walk around, plenty of space, no rush and a welcome part of our day.

This could be a really nice place to eat, but unfortunately once inside the place lacks atmosphere, and more importantly the food is just not good. The soup had a funny taste and the oignon rings and mushrooms were clearly frozen, and quite tasteless. Even the tea had a bad taste to it. I was surprised that the pub was empty when I went in with my mother... forty five minutes later upon leaving, I understood why. I even apologised to my mother for taking her there. Yet it could be a high class bistro/restaurant, if a good chef was hired to conjure up good dishes. And it is a real shame because the pub is well placed and has great potential. Yet we were happy to leave the place as inside there was a strange sense of oppression, despite the waitress being nice, in her own way. A long walk along the promenade, managed to dissipate our disappointment.
