We visited in a warm day, we got seated in the lovely covered courtyard. The waiter was very attentive and took our order efficiently. We had the standard afternoon tea for 4 people. We had a quality selection of sandwiches including salmon and cucumber , beef and horseradish and egg and cress. Fresh scones with jam clotted cream. Also selection of homemade cakes. As much tea and coffee you wanted. The whole experience was 5* you do have to book in advance as they get very busy.

Our Afternoon Tea at The George was everything an afternoon tea should be. The service was relaxed yet impeccable. The food was beautifully presented and delicious. The Champagne was perfect and refilling the teapots was no problem. The staff happily brought an extra special cake, complete with indoor sparkler, when I mentioned we were celebrating my son’s 40th birthday. We chose a table by the window and had a very relaxed few hours enjoying our tea, and following it up with Champagne cocktails, because why not? The George feels as if it hasn’t changed in many, many years, it has the most wonderful ambiance, yet it’s bang up to date with the quality of care and service. Thank you to everyone who made our afternoon special.

We went yesterday, for a friend’s birthday, for afternoon tea. Very very disappointed for her. No vegan option. All they could do was the sandwiches. It’s a beautiful place and lovely staff but very poor on its options for vegans, which is shocking in this day and age. If you are vegan, be warned you can’t enjoy the afternoon tea and have very very limited options. In fact no desserts at all. We had to go else where.

The George in Stamford offers a charming atmosphere and friendly service, making it a pleasant setting for afternoon tea. The staff were welcoming and attentive, and the service was generally efficient. The star of the show was undoubtedly the scones, which were exceptionally fresh and delicious. Unfortunately, the establishment's well-documented issues with catering for vegetarians resurfaced, despite the involvement of both a supervisor and manager. It is disappointing that such a basic requirement continues to be a challenge. The situation was eventually rectified, but it marred what should have been a seamless celebration of our friend's 60th birthday. While the food and drink were enjoyable overall, the experience was somewhat tarnished by the vegetarian mishap. Additionally, the state of the men's restroom was unacceptable. A significant water leak had created a hazardous puddle, requiring guests to navigate through it with caution. In conclusion, The George has the potential to offer a wonderful afternoon tea experience. However, it is essential that they address the ongoing vegetarian catering issues and rectify the maintenance problems in the restrooms to ensure a more satisfying visit for all guests.

Very disappointed as the floor by the only available table was littered with crisps, the table full of dirty crockery and the suited gentleman, who looked us up and down, disparagingly said "wait here and I'll come back to clear" . He finally returned and put menu's on the table. After about 8 minutes we decided to leave. I stayed here recently and ate in the Oak Dining Room.....no problem with that service!

We were lucky enough to be given a champagne afternoon cream tea voucher and before starting this review, I will say we had a lovely afternoon and its always lovely to soak in the atmosphere of The George. However, having been lucky enough to have had afternoon tea at several 'five star' locations around the country, it maybe didn't live up to expectation. The welcome was good, option of eating in or out as a hot afternoon. Sat in the lounge, nice and cool. We were offered drinks straight away,as we had arrived early. Pot of tea delivered quickly and was hot and refreshing. We had a Darjeeling later, which was also lovely. Nice buzz and atmosphere, great for people watching but a bit like a waiting room with people being brought through with luggage and a surprisingly high number of elderly couples wandering in, stopping, looking bewildered and leaving again. Ordering, we told the waitress our dietary requirements (which were included on the original booking) as one of us is pescatarian but stressed it was only one of us. Afternoon tea arrived promptly at the time we were booked in for. Two egg finger sandwiches and two cream cheese and cucumber finger sandwiches each. Not very inspiring and I guess the disclosure of the dietary requirement worked against us? Also, when we have been to 'higher end' locations, we were given the option of having more sandwiches if wanted, not today. (We wouldn't have, as the quantity of food overall was more than enough) A fruit scone and a plain scone each, very fresh and baked well. However we had to ask for our jam and cream as they were not delivered with the food. The cakes looked beautiful. The battenburg and the strawberry mousse cup were wonderful. The macaron tasted lovely but texture was not what we would expect. The choux bun had a bitter chocolate filling which we did not find pleasant. So a mixed bag. Champagne was beautifully chilled and lovely. Service was great, staff were friendly and it was a lovely afternoon out. Would we have been happy to pay the price if it had not been given to us? No. Would we go again? Unlikely, there are better afternoon teas to be had. The George is a lovely place but this time we left with the feeling that it did not quite deliver.

We bought our friends from France here for afternoon tea as we wanted to give them a proper English treat! The George was the first place we thought of as we have eaten here before and stayed here, but never had afternoon tea. We parked in the car park so our guests were treated to the beautiful walk through the gardens and the garden room, so they were already impressed. The staff were immediately attentive and polite and gave us a choice of places to sit. As it was a Wednesday afternoon, we had a room to ourselves which was beautifully appointed and again, impressive. More brownie points there. The waiter heard our friends speak and said 'oh, you are French? Bonjour et bienvenue!' - well, that was just brilliant! Now the afternoon tea - out of this world. We all enjoyed every bit of it. Our friends tried proper tea and the 16 year old son was converted. They loved the traditional sandwiches, the scones were the best they had had, and of course, the cakes were magnificent. We were never hurried - it was a thoroughly indulgent afternoon. I was also able to show them the other rooms, including the Oak Restaurant which was laid for dinner. They walked in there and had just one word to say - classe. Thank you George for not letting us down in any way, and giving us an afternoon to remember.

Very enjoyable experience. Very helpful staff and a very comfortable lounge in which to have afternoon tea. Great selection of sandwiches cakes and scones were served with a large pot of tea and a large pot of coffee. We had refills of both tea and coffee and extra sandwiches. Visited here with a group of 7 friends so at £29 a head and a fantastic reputation, I had high hopes. The first warning sign was upon arrival where we were all sat around a small table (that was a lot lower than the chairs) and struggled to fit everything on. The room itself was very dark and not as stylish as I envisioned. Very difficult to get pots of tea and coffee etc on the table! When food came, we then had to put things on the floor to fit it all on with no intuitive help from the waiting staff. Please do get larger tables. For 7 people we were brought only two stands including some sandwiches, a selection of treats and scones. We were all hungry and finished up the sandwiches in no time. They were refilled once, but not again. Individually I probably had four quarters (one sandwich). The treats were nice but again, due to lack of space it was a pain to navigate the runny jam and cream on separate plates without making a mess. I have had much nicer afternoon teas at half the price elsewhere. Sorry to say this is a hugely overhyped venue. Please save your money!

Our first and last visit to an “overly hyped” venue. We thought we would be extravagant and treat ourselves to the “champagne afternoon tea” in the “Garden Room”. We pre booked, with one of us being vegan , in case the staff needed to be aware, but thought, with this being a hotel of outstanding reputation, it would really be unnecessary. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a staff member who showed us to a green plastic table and chair outside under a dirty parasol, with a piece of faux fur to sit on . We sat down and looked forward to receiving our Champagne, expecting it to arrive very soon, so that we could sip it whilst waiting for our tasty sandwiches and treats to be prepared. Half an hour had passed with no acknowledgement or apology of our wait. Finally we were brought our glass of fizz , followed by our tea and one small jug of milk. They were aware of one of us having strict dietary requirements and yet , upon asking, the one jug contained cows milk. Our sandwiches and treats separately on pretty little cake stands. Finger sandwiches made from one tiny slice of white bread chopped into four little fingers of which contained some tomato and I think cranberry Sadly bland, tasteless and uninteresting, along with large selection of cakes and scones. Yet again, we glanced down to find one plate of something that resembled runny jam and one small bowl of cream and butter . I asked yet again If the butter was dairy free . It wasn’t, so some was then brought to our table . Apparently there was no plant based cream to be had , so had to manage to force down a very hard and dry scone and couldn’t manage the other two . Would rather have had more savoury to choose from as the cakes were very sweet and sickly. Without sounding ungrateful here , but this was in comparison, with other venues in the area, because of its reputation, to be very expensive . We expected a lot more in regards to attentive service and dietary knowledge . It was busy, but it was well staffed . This was our treat to celebrate a very special occasion. Such a disappointment. We won’t be returning. It may have an outstanding reputation to appeal to those used to a high standard of service , but in our opinion, standards and customer service are far better elsewhere !

Today myself and five friends had afternoon tea at the George. I have been numerous times and it has always set the bar very high for afternoon tea in our local area. We were celebrating my friends 50th. It was busy when we arrived so we were asked if we would like a table in the garden restaurant. We were shown to our table in a lovely setting in the restaurant. When our afternoon tea arrived iT was on one stand. As a party of six and paying £26.50 a head you would expect six of everything. This was not the case. There were four of somethings, five of others and sixteen finger sandwiches between us. We complained and another afternoon tea was brought out, set up for three people, with lovely garnish and much better presented. The waitress said the number of things served wasn’t an issue as we could request unlimited extras. That is not the point. We wanted six portions of afternoon tea as per the menu. We left disappointed as this is not the standard that you would expect from the George, all of the previous beautiful visits seem a long long way from the presentation and service that we received today.

it was a lovely day when we visited for afternoon tea, and sat out in the courtyard. It was difficult to get the attention of the waiting staff, eventually we ordered afternoon tea.Having been to other establishments for afternoon tea, we were somewhat surprised that there was no explanation as to what would be provided, as this was the norm. When the food arrived the quality was very good, and we enjoyed it. However, it would have been nice to have been asked if we would like more tea. When we had finished, it was again difficult to find a member of the waiting staff for the bill. After a long wait, finally we found someone who went off to get the bill. However, after another long wait we finally gave up and went inside to find somewhone who we could pay!We felt that there was an air of complacency about the place, and we have had better for less money elsewhere.

For those who do not know Stamford, you must. It is a quintessentially British small town known for its spires and honey coloured buildings (a piece of The Cotswolds not in The Cotswolds). The George is of significant historic renown and this is reflected in all the nooks, crannies, and spots to eat and drink. We enjoyed afternoon tea in the courtyard and the quality far exceeded the price that we paid. The food was light and fresh as one might expect and the service impeccable. My wife is a Food and Nutrition specialist by trade and described the scones as some of the finest (lightest) she had ever eaten

Went here for afternoon tea yesterday (4/5/2019). £25 each for afternoon tea. Four finger sandwiches, a selection of small cakes and two scones and tea or coffee, also the lemon sponge was dry.... I would rather have had more sandwiches, who wants to eat two scones after you've already had cake? I can only say that you're paying for the setting, which is lovely, and atmospheric, rather than the food, which was nice enough, but not worth £25.

Recently I decided to visit Stamford, a town which I'd only visited once before on a bellringing outing, and that alone proved to be a good choice. After exploring the ancient churches, bookshops and antiques emporiums, my colleagues and I decided to round off our day with afternoon tea at the George of Stamford and we were not disappointed. We didn't go in for the full works - my sister in law and I opted for the scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam whilst my brother opted for a selection of sandwiches. Staff were friendly and polite, service was prompt, and our food was absolutely first class. A plentiful quantity of tea was provided too - enough for several cups. Also I found that the gents toilets, when I had occasion to visit them, were some of the most opulent I've come across. Our visit was slightly less enjoyable than it might have been on account of the somewhat inebriated young gentlemen on a nearby table but that was no fault of the hotel's and certainly not something for which it can fairly be blamed. I have decided that if I have reason to stay in Stamford, the George will certainly be my hotel of choice.

Is there a more delightful way of spending and afternoon? A stroll around the beautiful town of Stamford and then afternoon tea at The George Hotel. We hoped to sit outside in the garden but as the weather was inclement we were offered seats inside. The room was warm and cosy with a lovely atmosphere and music from the piano in the background. The sandwiches which were excellent were quickly devoured and then almost as quickly replenished. The scones were nice and warm and delicious particularly with the homemade jam. The cakes were wonderful and unfortunately we were unable to eat them all. All the staff were friendly and attentive. One very small criticism is that we were surprised that the tea was in teabags and not loose. However it was a very pleasant experience indeed and would highly recommend it.

An awful experience. Arrived at said hotel on the afternoon of 3rd Dec to have tea and mince pie to celebrate our get together of friends. It took quite a while for our order to be taken, and then a long time me for order to arrive. In the mean time the guests who sat at our table previously came back to ask if they had left a bag behind, we all looked for them but alas no bag was left, but the woman in question appeared to disbelieve us and walked away as one of our party got on the floor with a torch to search under the table. Within less than five minutes the waiter came back to ask the same question, to which we said NO, then we were approached buy an under manager TOM,with such s bad attitude to ask the same question again, and when we told him he was the third person to ask the same question he immediately became VERY RUDE, totally no skill in dealing with a situation like this and totally upset one of our party. Our order started to arrive in dribs and drabs by no more than six different waiters/waitresses. A total mess up of the complete order, not enough cups a TOTAL mess. One of our party asked to see the duty manageress Sarah, and was totally ignored so two people in our party went into the hotel to speak to Sarah, duty manageress who proceeded to be so rude on not willing to listen to our complaint. No body seemed to care at all. We paid the bill and left. It was a total let down to our Christmas get together, I can only advise people who want to have a nice time LEAVE THIS HOTEL ALONE.

As a gift to a friend I brought full afternoon tea, we arrived at 3.30 and were advised on where to sit, we thought this was a waiting area as we were on sofa's however shortly afterwards the afternoon tea was brought to us, it was uncomfortable as sitting on a sofa reaching over, crouching over food it just did not feel very premium. The food: Well we had 4 slices of sandwiches each which felt like it was on standard Tesco bread, the only one we both liked was the egg and even that was standard, we went on to cakes... and we know our cakes... and very disappointing the walnut cake had no flavour and had gritty sugar so it felt like we was eating sand, the Victoria sponge was overly sweet, the chocolate cake was just very bitter. Scones! Well they were a bloody delight! The only thing we really enjoyed. Staff: The staff were very friendly especially a chap called Michael (I think) he was very attentive was always ensuring we were OK, provided the wifi code etc... if it was not for him I would of gave this a 1. I am very disappointed and will not be returning which is a shame as I have been told how good the bar and dinner is here, but this has completely put me off. I received a gift of afternoon tea with a glass of champagne at The George, Stamford for my 65th birthday. My husband and I visited on Friday 18th March, we were surprised at not being able to book for the occasion and were told to 'just come along we start at 3.30pm. We arrived and were hard pushed to find a table, least of all a seat! A very helpful gentleman did try to assist. We were eventually seated and given a most generous class of champagne together with an 'OK' afternoon tea. The ambience I liken to a 'Caff', we were disturbed regularly by lots of glass chinking and when I searched for the noise, it emanated from a cupboard where a member of staff was loading and unloading a dishwasher, surely the doom could have been closed to eliminate some of the clatter. The whole experience was far from genteel, how very disappointing the afternoon was! You appear to be resting on you historic reputation. It is a definite NO from us both. Please, please buy larger sized blouses for your female staff.

We were driving home to London from Hebden Bridge, and decided to break our journey in Stamford. I'd looked at The George's website and they said that they didn't take reservations for afternoon tea, but there was plenty of room in their 'nooks and crannies'After a 2 1/2 hour drive we were tired and hungry. The hotel starts serving afternoon tea at 3.30pm. We were there just after, 3.35 at the latest and already the room was full, but we could go on a waiting list. Foolishly we said yes, and we were directed to the bar, which had a very loud rugby match on a huge television. We were soon joined by at least a dozen other people on the waiting list. The poor woman manning the door was by now turning people away. We had to wait an hour. This is no way to run a hotel. I wish now that we had just walked away but we were cold and tired and we don't know the town, so we waited. The tea was ok, nothing special, but I was so angry by the time we eventually got served (service was very slow) that I wasn't really in the mood. Reading the reviews prior to going..I thought I was in for a wonderful treat. For £22 per head, the selection was mediocre, and service very slow. Had to wait approx. 20 mins before they even came near. Had to ask for refill of coffee twice as the original waitress had forgotten us. It was very busy when we were there, so surely more staff could have been made available. Must admit that the surroundings were fantastic.

The two of us arrived for tea and sat in the delightful courtyard. The George has moved forward handsomely. It is far from dated in its decor and maintenance. There were many people taking tea in the designated room (one of many reception rooms). We sat outside of that area and had only half an hour to spare. Despite a request for prompt service we had, at best, ten minutes to drink the tea and eat the scone. The quality was very good but the service could be a a bit more ' on the ball'.

Three young, well not so young, ladies travelled from Altrincham, Worcester and Coleshill to have lunch at the George. Two of us had eaten there previously and of course its great reputation prevails. A two course lunch is competitive, the starters were extra and were expensive but the tempura prawns were ideal for two sharing. The main course was fabulous, beautifully presented, hot and portion friendly, that is, leaving enough room for sweets from the gorgeous dessert trolley. We had a reasonably priced sparkling wine, coffee and truffles. A real treat, it was so good we have already booked our Christmas outing there.

The reservation was at relatively short notice but having previously dined at this venue , we were glad that on arrival and with pleasant summer weather, we were offered an outside table. The menu choice was good and the service was attentive and friendly. As expected, the quality of our meal was excellent and was complemented by a complete yet varied wine list . I would recommend The George to my friends and in fact have already booked a Christmas reunion for colleagues.

We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at the George Hotel Oak Panelled Restaurant. The service was very professional, but the waiters and waitress were also very pleasant and friendly. The menu was extensive and varied and the standard of the food was particularly good. Helpings were generous without being too large, presentation was very good and the taste of all the dishes we tried was excellent. We also enjoyed a good house wine and loved relaxed and unhurried ambience in the handsome surroundings. We shall look forward to returning again soon.

Here's the thing, I am gluten free. Afternoon tea is something I can usually only dream about, but not at the George!Such elegant surroundings. we sat outside in the covered courtyard. Lots of space and plenty of mature plants to make you feel deliciously secretive. Attentive service and my tea looked just like everyone else's! Three plates of treats on a stand. Dainty finger sandwiches, three cakes and a scone with clotted cream and jam. Wide selection of teas and refills kept coming. What is not to love?Went back for a second one at the end of the week!

Been coming here for years for afternoon tea, dinner, events, etc but can't help but notice how the service isn't what is was. The actual hotel, location and even food are all lovely (even though the water for tea always tastes murky and needs boiling properly) but the staff, in the lounge at least, need a bit of refining - I always feel like I'm either trying to get someone's attention or being bustled along.

I invited my lovely 91 year old friend for a birthday lunch at the George and as always it did not disappoint. Courteous service, my friend said she felt 'like royalty' as we were looked after so well.
Wonderful, well cooked food, how nice not to have to fight your way through foams and specification etc! (For me having specified pea purée was the final straw when dining elsewhere - why not just serve peas?!!)
Perfect roast beef, and omelette Arnald Bennett followed by Profiteroles and cheese.

Mediocre and rather tasteless. I was asked how I wanted my liver, but it was over cooked and my scallops were under cooked. Staff were charming if a little over familiar. The beef looked great, but was under hung . London prices, but the kitchen is not delivering.

The George is a Wonderfully traditional hotel and restaurant that never disappoints. It is always very busy but the staff are exceptionally attentive and the food is consistently good. We ate in main restaurant and I had the roast beef from the trolley and my partner had the duck. Both meals were delicious and all the better for being served on piping hot plates (so often not the case in restaurants these days). We followed this with desserts from the Trolley - an excellent sherry trifle and a luxurious crime caramel.

Took my father to The George for a lunch to celebrate his 85th birthday - he didn't want a big 'do'. We were very well looked after from beginning to end. There was a good selection of food and wines, and the meal was well presented and served. The staff were attentive without being fussy. They noticed it was a birthday meal, and brought a dessert with sparkler for my father, which he really enjoyed. Many thanks to all the staff.

We celebrated our 25th Wedding Anniversary here and had a wonderful evening. The dining room is lovely, as the name suggests is Oak Panelled, and our table was candle lit making it ideal for our special occasion.

From first arrival, the restuarant team were superb. Polite and attentive throughout the whole evening, from pulling out our chairs for us when we arrived, to ensuring our wine glasses were kept topped up.

Oncecseated we were offered drinks and canapés while we browsed the menu, which took us a while as the choices available all looked fantastic.

The food was excellent. Starters arrived quickly, we both had Three Hot Starters, which came beautifully presented and was delicious. Plates were cleared away quickly and enough time left for a little more wine and a chat before the main course arrived.

Taste of Lincolnshire Pork and a Grand Brittany Platter, which was stacked with seafood, very impressive. Again, lovely presentation and the pork was cooked perfectly...the pork belly just melted in my mouth.

After the main course the restaurant team brought us out a surprise mini pudding selection with a giant sparkler to help us celebrate. What a lovely touch.

We opted for the cheese board to finish, which had a nice selection of both cheeses and biscuits.

We were there for a full three hours, and had a wonderful evening...completed with a coffee and a whisky.

It was an expensive evening, as we really pushed the boat out, but overall the quality of the food, the abience and superb staff made it worth every penny.

We we asked if we would like to wait before ordering a dessert and decided on a dessert after a short delay. I had a coffee and a malt whiskey
The evening was warm so we ate outside which was pleasant and added to the ambience of the occasion.
The food was good without being outstanding. The food was served efficently and the table cleared quickly between courses.
I cannot really fault the food or the service my only reservation would be on value for money.
We paid £150.00 for two persons and this include for two glasses of wine and one whiskey.
I would return again despite this because the George has certainly a good old English charm about it and suitable for a special occasion.

My husband & I visited the George Hotel on Saturday 9th May. It is nearly a year ago since we were married there. One of our wedding gifts was a voucher for a Champagne Afternoon Tea, which we decided to redeem in celebration of our imminent anniversary. We had heard lots about the George and really wanted to try it, we just needed to wait for a special occasion so that we could enjoy the evening without worrying about the cost. Last Saturday was such an occasion, and I have to say that we were not disappointed. The meal inc pre-drinks and a nice bottle of wine, was about twice what we would normally pay but worth every penny. The menu was superb, the food exquisitely cooked, the service was outstanding and we simply had a wonderful meal.
I was slightly worried before going that the wine would be too expensive, and was very pleasantly surprised by a large variety of wines at both ends of the price scale. If you feel uncomfortable about spending £100/head on a fantastic meal for two with a nice bottle of wine, then this isn't the place for you. But if like us, you occasionally want to have a very special night out, then save up your pennies and then go and enjoy a wonderful evening at the George.

Two of us went recently for a celebration dinner. The whole ambience of the hotel and restaurant can best be described as buzzing and although the restaurant is oldie worldie the food and presentation certainly were not. There was some confusion over our drinks orders and the service was definitely not to a silver service standard but the quality of the food made up for this in the most part. The prices were astronomical (£70 per head with minimal drinks) but the restaurant was almost full so they must be doing something right!

I visited The George today along with my Mother and my 7 month old baby for an Afternoon tea as a mothers day treat. No reservations are taken for Afternoon tea and when we arrived we were told that there was a waiting list. Not a major issue - Stamford isn't an unattractive town in which to kill a little time so off we went taking advantage of the free car parking. On our return we were shown into the lounge with lots of very comfortable seating in front of a roaring fire. Very cosy. We opted for the Full afternoon tea - in hindsight we could have shared but frankly we were both hungry so opted for one each. The selection was wonderful - the still warm scones especially! and the fresh coffee (I cannot stand tea) was plentiful As a breastfeeding mum I am always a little wary of visiting new places but I am glad to say that I felt very comfortable feeding here and found it accessible with my pushchair. The only comment made while I was feeding my son was the hostess offering a refill on our coffee pot. The service we received was outstanding. friendly and attentive without hovering. No, it's not cheap but it was a treat and in my opinion well worth a try - we agreed that we would both visit again and found the experience to be great value.

The service initially was very good and at the table mainly was good but we had to constantly pour our own wine which at these prices they should do for us. They offered once. The mains were good, some starters were similar to what you would get in a standard pub. They chose the vegetables for us and each vegetable dish had some added ingredient to it so all of them were very rich. If we had plain vegetables with our rich main courses it would have been better. Adding bacon to the beans, frying the broccoli in batter and having potato gratin and confit potatoes was all just far too rich that it made me feel a little ill. It's a special place but the menu could do with updating after all these years and the vegetables really could be cooked more simply. The dining room is also full of old people who have obviously been coming for years.

We called in en route from Stansted Airport to Nottingham, on a cold and snowy night after a delayed flight. We desperately needed a place to rest and recharge before the last leg of the drive. I have dined at the George in Stamford many times. I had booked a lunch with my family to have a relaxing lunch before Christmas. We found the hotel was very busy but were attended to promptly. The dining room was decorated for Christmas and looked stunning. We did not have to wait too long for our order and the staff were very attentive. Everyone in our party said they had enjoyed their food.

The problem appeared when we asked to have our coffee in the lounge. We asked for one pot of tea and 2 coffees. When this duly arrived we discovered the tea was Earl Gray which we had not asked for. The coffee was 2 extremely small cups. We were asked if we required milk, some hot milk was poured into the cups. The 2 people requiring tea also had hot milk poured into their cups but no cold milk was left. No one appeared to ask if we required a refill. We found this disappointing as we did not expect standards to have slipped so that we felt we needed to downgrade our rating.

When we came to pay the bill we discovered we had been charged nearly £20 for 2 small cups of coffee and 2 cups of tea.

We've enjoyed afternoon tea at The George a few times before, but our latest visit was a terrible disappointment, and we won't be going again. It seems they are trying to cut some corners...All the elements of the Afternoon Tea seem to have been compromised whilst, unbelievably, the price has actually risen - £20 for one afternoon tea, comprising four 'finger' sandwiches, four tiny cakes, two scones with jam and cream, and a pot of tea. The sandwiches are smaller than they used to be - almost literally 'finger' sized - and the bread seems very cheap, like ordinary supermarket basic bread. The egg sandwich in particular was ridiculously scantily-filled, and the cucumber in the cream cheese sandwich was limp and certainly not very fresh. The cakes seem more 'artificial' than they used to be, and much smaller. The scones, which previously we have found to be some of the best anywhere, did not live up to expectations, and were not even warm when we got them. Even the pot of tea was not very hot when we got it, and the weakness of the brew seemed to indicate that it had not been made with properly boiling water. The service was not great, and we had to ask for cutlery, which was forgotten, and later had a job to get anyone's attention when we wanted our bill. The waitress asked if we were paying by card, so we waited for her to come back with a card machine, but she never did. We eventually paid at the till on the way out. If you're paying top price for an afternoon tea, then you expect top quality, and this certainly was not that. We had to wait half an hour to get seated, and the place is obviously still popular, but is it a case of 'resting on their laurels' that could eventually tarnish the reputation of 'Afternoon Tea at the George'?
