Dined at Achness on a couple of nights whilst staying in the area, an older hotel that has seen finer days but operated by a family who clearly aim to deliver good local produce with first class service. Menu was small but every dish was really well cooked, broccoli & Stilton soup, steak pie, chicken curry and steaks were worthy of highlight. Delivering a quality service in a rural area must be really challenging but Achness do this really well and really worth a detour if you are in the area. Of special note was Veronica who ran the bar, served the tables and generally looked after everything front of house. She is a young lady with a great personality and a real future in hospitality. Thanks guys, hopefully return soon .

Stopped here on a multi day cycling tour cold and wet with no booking. We were thoroughly welcomed and immediately directed to the lovely comfy lounge to warm up and to wait for the restaurant to open. Lovely room and great food with good vegetarian options. Service and welcome from reception to all of the restaurant and breakfast staff was absolutely brilliant. Everyone was just so nice. The hotel should be very proud and of everybody that works there. Thanks for a great stay and would highly recommend.

The manager Heather is a genuine, lovely, hard working, host who is a complete credit to the hotel and the best example of Scottish hospitality I have ever experienced. Myself and a few friends recently stayed at the hotel, when Heather could not have done more for us and kept us entertained with her kindness and conversation all evening making sure we were well looked after by all her staff who reflected her standards and kindness. Great hotel, lovely bar and fantastic food. Thank you for a great stay Heather.

We were a group of 9 friends cycling the An Turas Mor trail from Glasgow to Cape Wrath. The hotel was close to fully booked but staff had previously helped us to find other accommodation for the remainder of our group (also very good!). Lovely welcome. We’re not often along that way but last couple of times we tried it was closed. (Time of year) Delighted they are open for business with such lovely staff and though their menu isn’t massive (for lunch, Kenny was hoping for scampi lol) we both had a delicious meal, I’m gluten intolerant and Chef catered well. Really good quality food, proper cooking, in relaxed doggy friendly environment. I’m sure over the season the Chef will have specials etc and I’m told their Sunday roast is amazing. Great experience, thank you guys x

We have visited the Achness Hotel on 3 or 4 occasions. It is on the edge of a remote hamlet in a beautiful part of Sutherland. The rooms are fairly basic but comfortable and there is usually a plentiful supply of hot water. Most of the staff are very friendly and pleasant. Best of all, the food is really good, with a large menu available for lunch and dinner. Local people make the most of having the restaurant nearby and the bar is cosy. Breakfast is included in the cost of your stay and, again, is of a high standard. We enjoy returning to the Achness Hotel, where we feel at home, despite being Londoners!

Having a holiday home in the village we regularly visit the Achness and when we have friends to visit as it is a short stroll from our accomodation. The pub is a attached to the hotel which is an old fashioned fishing accomodation. Decor is a little dated and the recent addition of a pool table in the main dining area has reduced the number of tables available. The pub is often full of locals and its nice that dogs are welcome, as well as fisherman or stalkers in all their wet & grubby gear. Have quite a wide choice of standard pub meals, and a few specials. The pub is open all year and serves food until 8.30pm. Order was taken quickly and cutlery and sauces brought to the table by chatty member of staff. When meals arrived the portions were generous in size , but some of the deep fried meals like chicken burgers and goujons were very over done and quite tasteless. Most people in the party enjoyed the food, and we went back a second time later in the week so couldn't be that bad! Due to the size of the portions we couldn't manage dessert. If you want fancy fine dining don't visit the Achness, but if you want standard pub fayre that's quick and easy then the Achness is fine,

The owners and staff are very friendly and welcoming, willing and able to fulfil any reasonable requests on the customers' part. Booking is essential, and there is a carvery on three nights a week with an a la carte menu on the others. The bar menu is excellent too. We shall be back later in the year.

Having a second home in the village of Rosehall, the Achness hotel ( or the leisur centre as it is known by locals) is our local pub & restaurant. From the outside it doesn't look much, but it has a pleasant view over fields of sheep & horses, and a small garden to sit out in the front ( uf you can brave the midges) Don't be put off when you go inside, especially if you are expecting fancy decor , this is a working pub for locals, so you will find everyone at the bar: fisherman in waders, farmers , dogs in fact anyone is welcome and the bar reflects this. However everyone is friendly and within minutes you will feel that the bar staff and locals have known you for years. They have a wide menu , some normal pub menu classic, some things with a Highlands mix, and some interesting specials. You can also eat in the hotels restaurant which serves a three course carvery, always good quality but very popular so you need to book a table. If table is full with fishers you might not get in. However we tend to eat in the pub. Oreders are always taken quickly, and they are very adapting, 10 of us turned up for a meal last week, and they were quick happy for us to move tables around etc. They also have a wide children's menu which is great. Food is served quickly and always well cooked and good sized portions, Fish & chips and Cullen Skink is very recommended.Remember to save room for desserts which are also good hearty sized portions. Prices are good , and they are open for meals right through out the year which is a real bonus in teh winter when it often appears that Scotland is shut!! They also offer a takeaway service, so if you are staying locally you can phone in your order and collect later.Recommend going on a wednesday evening which is the local music night, anyone is welcome to take part if they have some musical ability and there is a supply of instruments available to have a go. they also offer informal guitare lessons before the main evening. Music evening normally starts at 9pm.If you are staying in the area, or passing through on the way to West Coast recommend stopping off here

Enjoyed a fantastic, and reasonably priced, Fisherman's Lunch in the bar. Only sorry I wasn't there long enough to try the rest of the menu. Compliments to the kitchen staff.

I have returned to this hotel twice, since discovering it last year. It's off the beaten trail, and a wonderful base for exploring the beautiful wilds of Sutherland. Whether your preference is the East or West coasts, they are both within an hour's drive, and the scenery along the route is absolutely stunning. The welcome is always warm, the menu excellent, and the food is really good value and great quality. Free wifi, and nothing's too much trouble for the staff. This is a brililant place to escape to and recharge the batteries.

The menu is fantastic and the quality and preparation excellent. Prices are very good and there is an excellent range of drinks to accompany the food. The bar - and food - is much appreciated by locals who travel miles to enjoy it.The carvery in the restaurant is fantastic -if you can do justice to it! Starter, soup, choice of main courses and many veg, sweet, cheeseboard, coffee accompanied by a very good wine list. This is a meal that needs to be booked in advance - but well worth the planning. The lounge and the lounge bar are very comfortable and the owners very hospitable, friendly and accommodating. A meal to savour.

This was a lovely experience, the food was not ' swimming in grease' as i saw from another review, but it was great to see that the more recent reviews have been validated. We went here for my birthday at the end of october and honestly everything was really lovely . the service was great they were so friendly from the getgo, the charcuterie board we had for starter was very filling and diverse just wish they would have told us what the cheeses were ( i think the brie was from tain though it was familair) but thats a minor niggle that we had no info. the main courses were fab the skin on chips were AMAZING , and its a dog friendly place which we loved , we dont have dogs but we did get to pet some which made our day !

We know the Tongue area very well, and like to eat locally, so it was obvious we would decide to eat at the Craggan, and i'm happy we did! The restaurant area is welcoming and clean, staff friendly, and the car park was easy even with a big van. The only problem was choosing from the menu! So many tasty things - i wish we had more time to visit again.. All three of us enjoyed our food, and we shared everything so i know it was all delicious. Thank you for making a rather wet evening so special..

I recently had the pleasure of spending a delightful day at Dores Inn, and I still find myself reminiscing about the experience six months later. Nestled along the shores of the iconic Loch Ness, this charming inn offers a perfect blend of stunning views, a warm atmosphere, and exceptional service. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a lovely ambiance that sets the tone for a relaxing visit. The inn has ample seating, both indoors and outdoors, making it easy to find a cozy spot to enjoy the picturesque scenery. We opted for an outside table, and it turned out to be the best decision of the day. The views of the loch were absolutely breathtaking, providing a serene backdrop for our meal. Speaking of the meal, I must rave about the food—simply sublime! I usually find coleslaw unappealing, but Dores Inn's homemade version was a game changer. It was fresh, flavorful, and complemented our dishes beautifully. Every bite was a testament to the culinary care that goes into their offerings. After our satisfying meal, we joined a Rib-Boat journey on the loch, which was an exhilarating way to experience the surroundings. The thrill of speeding across the water, combined with the breathtaking views of the loch and its mythical charm, made for an unforgettable adventure. As a memento of our day, I couldn't resist purchasing one of their handmade crochet teddies of Nessie. It's now a cherished keepsake that brings back fond memories of our visit. To wrap up our day, we took a leisurely walk along the shoreline. The tranquility of the loch, coupled with the stunning natural beauty surrounding us, was the perfect ending to a fantastic day. Overall, Dores Inn exceeded my expectations in every way. From the lovely atmosphere and great views to the delectable food and friendly service, it’s a place I highly recommend. If you're looking for an exceptional day out near Loch Ness, don’t miss the opportunity to visit this gem. I still think about that wonderful day, and I can’t wait to return!
