Aberglais Inn in Merthyr Tydfil

We was looking for a nice place to eat on a Monday afternoon, on my search I found this little cosy pub restaurant. We didn't book but we was able to have a table. The waitress allowed us to sit where we liked, which was a nice touch. The menu was perfect. Choose a starter to share. Our main courses was truly amazing, definitely worth the wait. Service was pleasant and relaxing. Highly recommend this amazing venue if in the area. Thank you Clare & Joanne for a lovely Monday Afternoon Lunch. 10/10

We had an absolutely lovely time. Despite me messing up the numbers the staff fitted us in even though it was really busy. All staff were super friendly and accommodating to our party of 9. The food was beautiful and there was something for even our most fussiest eaters. Thank you so much for such a special night.

I ate dinner here with a party of 5. The staff were very friendly and attended and managed to fit us in quite last minute over the phone which was great. The atmosphere is cosy and warm, great for a cold night. The menu has a decent amount of choice and the bar is well stocked. The portions here are very generous especially for their price and it all tastes good - no complaints!

We went there for dinner whilst on a short trip to Wales based on their high ranking in the reviews. The staff were very nice and friendly and the waiter did his best to find as a table as we didn't book it in advance. The waitress brough a water bowl for our dogs too as soon as she had seen them. The food was nice, typical pub food though id say. The list of specials on the board was limited to just one dessert and one main. I appreciate it was Wednesday but there were quite a few people in so not sure why it was such a small choice. We wanted to order lamb shanks from the main menu but they said they didn't have any so my partner went for a chicken fillet wrapped in cured Welsh ham and I went for a lamb shank pie which was the only special. I'm puzzled how you can have a lamb shank pie but no lamb shanks available so they're clearly made well in advance. We were sat right next to their ladder door and the door through which the kitchen was accesses. Shortly after we placed our order we saw a waitress coming out of the ladder with a pack of frozen, sliced Tesco ham. As we nine of there guests were later having ham sandwiches we realised that my partner's Welsh ham was in fact just the off the shelve sliced Tesco one which was disappointing. The food was nice overall but nothing special, especially given the above. Our daughters had scampi and chips which were just a typical out of a bag scampi. The reviews seemed to indicate a gastro pub with much better food so perhaps I set my expectations too high. It was OK and decent but not more than that. And if the owners are reading this, please, get some proper ham or at least hide the Tesco one better so customers can't see what you're doing....

We went here for anniversary dinner, whilst staying in the Brecon Beacons. It was a 40 minute drive from where we were staying but it was definitely worth it. The staff are so friendly and helpful and were just absolutely amazing. The food was absolutely spectacular, really couldn’t fault it, and especially at the price as well. We would definitely come back again.

Came here for our anniversary meal on recommendation and was not disappointed. Some of the best food we’ve had out in a long long time. All 3 courses were perfect and the portion sizes were really good. Highly recommend but if you do want to go I suggest you book because they’re so busy.

My wife ordered the Aberglais chicken which was quite dry and overcooked although she was given an extra jug of sauce. The bed on crushed new potato was very nice. The extra side dish of vegetables was disappointing as the tender stem broccoli was basically raw. The chips are fantastic. I had the steak and ale pie which contained mostly mushrooms which fortunately I like but a steak pie should be predominately steak. The meat that I did have in the pie was very tasty. Again my chips were fantastic. For desert my wife ordered lemon cheesecake which was average and my sticky toffee pudding was bland. Service was very pleasant but slow. We were asked if everything was OK but we had finished our main courses by now and my wife had asked me not to complain as it was too late. We had been to the pub previously, about 12 months ago and had a good meal so I hope that we were just unlucky but I do not think that we will be returning.

10 of us went for a birthday meal. Our starters were there within 5 minutes of us sitting. All the meals were delicious and staff were very accommodating. Lived up to its reputation.

Returning to the aberglais inn for my father in laws 95th birthday lunch! This was one of his watering holes when he was growing up in Merthyr before moving to Bristol through work. We had difficulty getting to the pub through road closures in the area and seemed to be going around in circles, I believe it was th e land ladies son that spoke to us over the phone and told us to wait at a point we knew nearby and he drove out to meet us and we followed him down a few smaller roads but straight to the pub. We really cannot thank you enough for your help, we were made so very welcome and had a fantastic home cooked meal and a celebration for George. There is a sign on the wall of “arriving as strangers and leaving as friends “ , couldn’t say a truer word. Absolutely fantastic welcome and wonderful food,thank you so very very much.

Very disappointed with my recent visit. Long wait for food to arrive which is ok if it’s worth it. Sadly it was not. My steak was ordered med/rare but arrived very rare. I gave it a try but it was inedible very poor quality meat chewy, bland and not pleasant at all. Chips and sauce also poor. I brought this to the staffs attention but nothing was done or said. Lessons learned I will not return.

My wife and I were spending a few days in Brecon and selected the Aberglais Inn to eat in. What a good choice. After our first evening we booked again for the next two evenings. The food was very good, the service from Fionn and Fionn was excellent. Both charming welsh girls. I wish we lived nearer so we visit more often. Highly recommended.

Popped in on way from Brecon. Didn’t book and was lucky to get a table on a Tuesday night! Must be good. Caroline had the home made steak pie and I opted for my usual Sirloin steak with a lovely home made garlic sauce. Lemon cheesecake and mixed berry crumble to follow. Very busy I recommend booking to guarantee a table. Will return to try a Sunday roast soon 👍

Booked a table for 10 people, including 2 children, in early December for NYE meal at 12:45. Paid the required deposit and placed our meal order in advance, which saved a lot of time on arrival. The food starters were served as soon as we were seated, which were an ideal size as the mains were all very good sizes. We had between us the steaks / Lamb / Chicken burger & Gammon, which were all cooked as requested and very tasty. There was also no service charge added to the bill, which was expected for a larger group. Would recommend for large groups in the future. Thanks

First visit to the Aberglais Inn and we absolutely loved it. Simple/convenient online booking system and a great welcome. Lovely friendly staff throughout in a cosy atmosphere. The food was spot on. 4 meals including a kids meal and we all loved it. Perfectly cooked Rib-eye, beautiful Lamb Shank and lovely Aberglais Chicken. Little one loved his burger too!! Finished off with deserts and the cheesecake was amazing!! Week definitely be going back soon. Thanks for a great evening!!!

The location - on the outskirts of Merthyr and on the cusp of Bannau Brycheiniog. Lovely scenery and some lovely walks nearby. The premises - large parking area to the side of the pub, cosy, warm interior with a decent amount of tables and a smart outdoor area. The food - top quality and keenly priced. Exceptional value. The Sunday lunches, even for. Vegan, are superb. The staff - can’t do enough for you. All in all a superb experience.

Possibly the best Sunday lunch we have tasted absolutely stunning . We also come here regular and the mid week menu is always amazing

Rang up to book told fully booked . Went on line next day would allow me to book rang restaurant to make sure it was available was told to go ahead and book if it was available on system. Booked and paid £20 deposit . Rang the following day as my reservation text said booked to eat in the bar checked this was ok as not keen eating in a bar which is full of people just drinking and we would have a child with us . Told the bar is not like that everyone is eating in there. Later in day gets a text to ring them . Rang them I was told had to cancel my booking as no room for my booking in bar or restaurant there was a glitch on the system which took my booking !!! Hello I rang you numerous time to confirm the booking was ok , confirm the bar etc really disappointed

Another fabulous meal at The Aberglais, excellent service as always and our food was absolutely spot on. The team are a credit to the owners and always go above and beyond to make your experience the best it possibly can 10 out of 10 cheers guys

Previous had really nice meals here, but I don’t know whats happened.The usual pleasant atmosphere and warm welcome was not forthcoming. As for the food the garlic mushrooms were like a soup so much so that one of the party asked for a spoon. Chicken several of us had tasted unpleasant and was over cooked. We were asked if everything was ok and despite saying about the chicken nothing was done and to top it all we were overcharged at the end ! Needless to say this is our last visit here. Will not be recommending

Very friendly staff beautiful building great views fantastic food homemade reasonably priced. Nothing to dislike. Definitely would recommend and have returned a few times it is so good.

We are frequent visitors to the Aberglais. I can honestly say I have never had a bad meal, or a bad experience here. All the staff make effort to ensure you are happy and you have all you need. The food is so good and really reasonably priced. I recently booked the restaurant for 28+ people for my partners 30th birthday in April and everything was so easy, from booking, giving the pre order and everything on the night went smoothly. I even took some decorations to the venue the night before the meal and the staff kept them safe for me. Nothing was too much trouble and they were happy to help. Would always recommend the Aberglais for a welcoming atmosphere, smiley staff and excellent food.

The food here was so delicious, I had the steak and ale pie which was the nicest I’ve ever tasted the beef was so tender and the shortcrust pastry was perfect. The rest of my group really enjoyed their meals too. If you’re ever in Merthyr try this place you won’t be disappointed. P.s the staff are very friendly too :)

We arrived at the pub at 20:35 as it says serving food 12-9. Unbelievable they said they stopped serving. It wasn’t as if it was off the main road either. Took us 15mins from the hospital where we were visiting my father in law. As we left the pub the young girl walked back in the kitchen and laughed and said haha I got rid of them. We were already upset from visiting my desperately I’ll relative, otherwise I would have gone back in and given her a piece of my mind. SHOCKING!!!!!!

First time, friend took me to this pub. Very nice decor and ambience. Clean and very welcoming. Seated quickly, attended too quickly and food came within good time. Food was really good and portions were generous. Thank you, thoroughly enjoyed and will be back.

We went here for Sunday lunch the coronation weekend. Great Roast dinners 3 Beef and one vegetarian chicken pie. Beautifully cooked soft succulent beef with perfectly cooked vedgetables, a lovely way to finish our weekend in Wales. Would highly recomend.
