Oh dear oh dear oh dear, I was taking some friends from Canada all around Snowdonia to see the sights and experience Welsh hospitality. Being welsh myself I am incredibly proud of my country. Sadly the cafe at the top of the horseshoe pass was closed, where I explained that I always get friendly service with plain wholesome food. It was 19.30 and sadly not many places were open on our journey back from the very North of Wales. I had passed here many times and couldn't believe our luck that it was open.....that is where our excitement ended. I was in pain from the walking and driving to and fro, and so my friend went in to enquire if they were still serving food. "we shut at 8" came the reply. So they quickly beckoned me in and order we did. To say that the middle aged female serving would turn milk sour was an understatement. We ordered plaice and chips....there were three of us. "we only have 2 fish" came the surly reply. Ok we will have the steak and ale pie and the 2 fish please we said. No acknowledgement, no please or thank you, so extra loudly I said "Diolch yn fawr cariad"hoping that she would at least give a smile if she was a fellow welsh person. Nope, not a crack. I immediately thought of a female Basil Fawlty. "are you sitting here or in the restaurant part" she enquired in a "I wish you would go away" kind of tone. So taking the initiative we moved into the restaurant area, where another group of Americans attempted their ordering.....poor things we thought. Out came the fish and chips (clearly frozen beforehand, but fair play they were cooked well and frankly cardboard would have tasted good, as we were very very hungry). The Pie....well, it was obviously again taken from the freezer. Which to be honest I get that, you cannot rely on custom so fresh would be impossible to achieve. BUT, that does not give the excuse for being miserable and downright rude. My visitors had not experienced this for the whole of our trip and have been greeted by my fellow welshmen with interest and friendly chat. I would avoid this place like the plague, I certainly will not be bringing foreign visitors again and suggest that maybe the staff attend some training on customer relations. It costs nothing to smile and be polite for me "manners maketh man". No wonder the place looks run down, if you treat customers like this then word will get around. Give up now, put it up for sale and sell it to someone who is interested in making some money as I am fairly sure people would flock around if you were a little cleaner and friendlier.

Revolting, rundown, dirty, could go on, oh over priced slop must not forget to mention that, as the food is a rip off. The management should hang their heads in shame! Its embarrasing and if they had any pride they would shut the doors, have a major deep clean, re decorate and restart again. Disgrace ,dont go as putting money in the owners pockets is daylight robbery.

Overall a very poor experience coming here for Sunday lunch. No table service for drinks so we had to queue at the bar for what must have been well over 20 minutes. The place is tired and in desperate need of renovation. The toilets were dirty and smelly, lights flickering off and on in there to complete the post-apocalyptic theme.

We came across this place by accident, not being able to find somewhere in the town, so did not have the chance to be put off by others reviews. Yes, the covid restrictions are a bit OTT and I did not appreciate placing my food and drinks order through a screened off reception before sitting down. The food more than made up for this. Prawn cocktail starter was amazing and the Sunday roast to die for. Everything hot, fresh and beautifully cooked. Would go back and eat there again.

Hotel old and tired and on arrival smelt of old cooking grease/fat. Dated rooms with disgusting ‘cheap and nasty ‘ breakfast that was pre cooked and Luke warm. Tried to book taxi to go back to wedding venue to pick up car but told ‘you’ll be lucky taxi drivers had busy night last night it’s too early (9..30am) you’ll have to walk’ Disappointing end to what had been a fabulous wedding . The camp site down the road looked cleaner and more inviting.the only person that should come here is the ‘Hotel inspector’

I usually avoid places where very few cars are on the car park at popular meal times, my initial thought on seeing only one car on the car park was to drive on, but having turned in and being hungry we decided to give the benefit of doubt, sadly it soon became apparent that I would have been well advised to drive on. After a long wait at a sticky table near a widow with scruffy flyblown artificial flowers on the windowsill, the food arrived, my friend found his lasagna to be passable. I ordered fish and chips, while the portion of fish was large it was dry and overcooked, the fat or oil it had been cooked in had an unpleasant taste, the chips appeared to be of the cheap and nasty frozen type, the mushy peas were by far the best part of the meal. The toilets are located in a sort of portacabin, smelly and dirty they seemed not to have been cleaned for some time, there was no means of drying hands except by using paper from the filthy big job cubicle. With plenty of cigarette ends littering the veranda that gives access to the restaurant it seems that whoever runs the place has zero or little pride in making it attractive to patrons.

Stopped here with my friend for a quick drink but was immediately put off my the over the top safety “measures” in place. Virtually everywhere taped off. A hostile STOP sign at the entrance. A bar shielded in a mass of Perspex, indoor seats and tables cordoned off. Makes you think there’s something wrong with the place and it health could be at risk. My friend got served and said “she’s not the friendliest”. I was called forward and smiled. “You have to wear a mask” she said. I explained I was exempt. “Where is your lanyard?” she barked. I reminded her she had to right to ask such a question and she asked what I wanted. I asked if they were serving all drinks in a plastic glass. She said yes. I asked why “out of interest”. She said “health and safety”. I asked what this meant. When I visited here a few years ago they certainly served in glasses. “The wind could blow and knock glasses over. Then children could cut themselves”. What a ludicrous response. I was only asking out of curiosity and was about to order my drink when she said “that’s how we do things here”. That was all I needed to hear. Treating customers like dirt is obviously the way they do things too. I informed her I would not be spending my money there and left. What a horrible experience. Doesn’t deserve to be in business. I’d suggest campers take a journey into town and avoid Helga’s charm.

Very disappointing, our party had taken the trouble to make a reservation for 1pm but we’re not seated until 1-40 pm. Large numbers of people who had just turned up on spec and decided to have the carvery as a bar meal were served ahead of us. When we eventually did get to sit down the meal was very disappointing, meat in the carvery was served up in very miserly proportions and the person serving it appeared to have missed his calling as a surgeon, such was his skill at carving the thinnest of slices. The whole experience gave the impression of trying to make the highest turnover possible to the detriment of the customers.

Went for Sunday carvery lunch...3 adults and a 7yr old. Extremely slow service. We queued for quite a while behind about 10-12 other guests then when we got to the front the problem was obvious...the guy doing the meat carving was taking an age to cut the thinnest bits of meat he could. Move onto the veg...the young girl doing the dishing out asked if I wanted roast potatoes and parsnips. Of course I did, but was astonished when she gave me only one of each as if she was doing me a favour. That's right...one roasty and one little parsnip. The boiled potatoes were watery, the carrots were overcooked and the yorkshire pudding was small, pale and very undercooked. Ok, it was only £10 for a single course but it's poor value....so many other places in that area do it far better.

I would call Abbey Grange a pub rather than a restaurant, and having seen reviews on here I wasn't sure what to expect. Though pleasantly surprised. Firstly, dog friendly areas inside. Staff were lovely. Chatty, friendly and very happy to help. The vegetarian curry is absolutely delicious. Home made, fresh, and lots of it. It's a huge place both indoors and out. We are in the area for a few days and will definitely pop back in for that curry!!

I went out with my wife, nana and grandad to have a nice day in Llangollen. On our way home we stumbled across what looks to be a nice country pub/restaurant/hotelWhen we got inside we had to wait nearly 10 minutes for anyone to show at the bar and when we asked where to sit and where are the menus she just pointed miserably like we were an inconvenience. We sat down, worked out the menu and I went to order. The miserable lafy who commented " it's too hit, i cant be bothered" took our order.A burger, no chips with extra salad2 x sirloin steaksFish and chips. We waited nearly 40 minutes... let me just say, we were the ONLY people in there.Fish/chips takes 10 minutes in fryer, steak medium done takes a few minutes a burger takes 10 - 15 mins.Turns out, my burger off the specials menu was the kind of burger you get at football stadiums... frozen. My wifes steak was literally half fat, my grandads was a 3rd fat and having asked for medium it came even more than well done and was barely chewable anyway. The chips with the fish and chips were so pal i reckon they were cooked in the freezer. The fish was about the only nice thing to come out of it.Whats disgusting is that £36 of the £57 bill was the steaks, £17.95 each!!!! They were absolutely terrible. The waiter was a young lad but clueless, it wssn't his fault, clearly been thrown in and asked to do something it seems he has never done before, i blame the management for that.Never going back, we actually wanted the britannia inn a minute further down the horseshoe pass but we were so hungry we stopped here and left feeling hungry still.

When driving up on the main road to hotel they advertise takeaway fish and chips as £4-95. We were in fact charged £7.95 for the small fish and chips, querying this the next day we were told the £4.95 was for the frozen fish and chips and what we had was fresh fish and chips. There is no mention of the £4.95 takeaway on the menu in the pub and were told we would have been offered it which was not the case. The food was dreadful and wish I had read other people’s reviews.

I visited here recently with my mum For something to eat. We ordered our food and drink at the bar and sat down. There were 5 tables occupied. After about 20 mins food had not arrived So to pass the time I read the trip advisor reviews People basically were slating the place about how slow they were I quickly realised tho, that the chef cooks each table at a time from scratch I knew then not only would the food be freshly made but would be hot to, and I wasn't wrong, my meal was lovely The steak was cooked to perfection food was hot. My mum had the Gammon which she really enjoyed So in my opinion the food was worth the wait. We waited 50 minutes in total. I'd rather wait this long for good food. Some people have no patience. Thank you chef No complaints here

We booked in for 1 night and stayed for 2, would like to have stayed longer. This it a great country pub, which was constructed in 1879. The pub has been tastefully renovated and has all the comforts for a pleasant stay. It is ideally situated to explore the area. There is plenty of on site parking so you can come and go as you please. We stayed in room No. 3, which is furnished with a 4 poster bed and view overlooking the valley. The heating in our room was excellent, which was certainly welcomed after a day out exploring in the cold. The Welsh breakfast and evenings meals were freshly cooked and exceeded our expectations. The staff were friendly and helpful. We love staying in these well managed friendly country pubs. Highly recommend you stay at this pub. A big well done and thank you to the staff.

Stumbled across the Abbey Grange as I couldn't find parking in Llangollen. Ordered 2 cream teas, the scones were like rocks, bara brith was crumbly with melted butter, obviously stale. Kids sausages were black, sent them back, waitress's response, we have to cook them to a certain temperature. Also had a ham and cheese toasted sandwich, found a 2 inch long piece of rubbery string in my sandwich.. brought it to the waitress's attention, her response, we cook our own ham, sorry... Chef needs to take more care when preparing food and have a bit of pride.. Poor waitress was rushed off her feet, she was answering phones, serving at the bar, checking in guests and working in the restaurant.. used the ladies toilet.. really dated and grim.. hate to see what the hotel rooms look like..

I had a fantastic meal here tonight. I've visited twice previously and both times the service here was superb. The Llangollen bitter, I'd definitely recommend. It's nice to see a pub which brews its own beer. It would certainly be disrespectful to come here and order Carlsberg, so I urge you to try the Llangollen beer. The food was excellent too. I ordered the chicken and gravy with homemade chips. I didn't have to wait terribly long for the food, just about right I think. The atmosphere was nice and the location stunning. I'm glad to have found this place. I've been fortunate enough to have visited many pubs across the country, so I'd hazard a guess that I tend to have pretty high standards. It's a nice pub. If you're en-route via the Horseshoe pass I'd definitely give this place a whirl, even if it's just for a pint.

We were staying in a cottage not far from this brewery/bar/restaurant/hotel/camp site and decided to try their fish and chips, as these were advertised on a sign along the road for only £4 (including salad). You order at the bar, pay, sit down at one of the (somewhat greasy) tables and your order is brought to you within acceptable time. One of us made a choice from the specials (meat lasagne with chips+salad for £8,95). The lasagne was somewhat disappointing, the fish quite small and not very tasty. But for that price you can't expect much more I guess. The chips confirmed our impression that their standards are unfortunately not too high. The locally brewed beers are okay and I would certainly recommend to give this a try if you are interested in small breweries! The bathrooms were quite smelly and could need an update. So if you want to try a local beer, you should plan a stop here; if you are in for a snack you know what to expect now, but I'd rather not recommend to call in if you want to have a nice and great dinner.

Poor girl looked rushed off her feet. As we waited for our jacket potatoes to arrive We decided to sit outside admiring the fantastic views around. The filling lacked tuna a bit and was mostly a thin Mayo dressing however filled a hole for a short while. (The desserts however which we decided to treat ourselves to after a wrestle with our consciences were totally delicious- even if they did take ages to turn up) The bitter that's Made right next door was well worth a try, totally delicious. Admittedly, I did feel rather concerned and was more sensitised than usual. On arrival parking was easy, a nice big car park with quite a few cars there .... sounded hopeful. There was a nice seating area outside, which was great as the sun was shining and we waited for our friends. Next stop, the bar, a hard working lady - on her own - trying to serve a long queue of waiting people, while at the same time checking in three residents. An impossible task and after waiting about 20 minutes managed to get a drink. Not the one I wanted as they had no bottles of pineapple juice! (driving). Next, to the payment desk. £8.95 for a main course. Sounds very reasonable to me. But again, quite a wait. Then another long queue for the food. There was a good selection of meats (5), plenty of veg to choose from. However, the chef cutting the meats appeared to be working at a snails pace and could have done with some help. There was another person there serving the veg but of course he was standing by waiting for the chef to cut the meat!!! Rather a strange set of affairs. We were allowed three slices of meat from the carvery of whichever meat we requested. I have never seen such thin slices of meat cut anywhere before. The chef could have been a surgeon cutting the meat with a scalpel! Hence, the measures can only be described as as much as you want as long as you like lots and lots of veg, which incidentally, had been cooking for so long they were tasteless. Finally, we had desserts. I must say at £3 each they were excellent and very good value for money. In summary, this place was nowhere near as bad as expected. The serving areas are very small and cluttered and there is a shortage of serving staff. For £8.95 I do feel we had value for money and went home full. Was the food good? NO. Would I go there again? NO.

food was ok nothing special , the smell of the hens & chickens was disgusting outside a right put off . won't be going there again , service was rubbish the people did not have a clue what we was having to eat and kept asking us what we were having , the drinks were really expensive plus the southern comfort was watered down .

Visiting Llangollen we decided to call into Abbey Grange for the Sunday Carvery. Although the food was very plentiful on the carvery, it was basically mushy. All the vegetables were softer than soft. Hubby had ribs, which he was charged £13 for - they were like the ones from Aldi or Lidl for £3! Not very good.

We called in here as we'd been to another nearby tea rooms who had run out of scones so couldn't do a cream tea. They happily put one together for us, warm fresh scones and Welsh fruit loaf with jam and clotted cream and coffee for £4 each. Really good value for money and we sat outside in the garden to eat it with lovely views and space for the dogs to run around. Couldn't fault it.

We ended up at this place for lunch, what a mistake!!,We ordered from the bar menu, 5 cold sandwiches and a jacket potato. It took nearly an hour to arrive - thank god we were not in a hurr!,We sat outside and the gorgeous views helped our mood and saved the day, avoiding us walking away and making a complaint! It wa not even busy and when mentioned to the barmaid/waitress, her response was "there is only one chef cooking and preparing the food". There was no apology or any offer of recompenseShe seems to be hardened to all the complaints she must get!, The location and views are amazing, but the staff are USELESS Don't bother wasting your money or time thereI don't like seeing businesses fail, but in this instance it will if they don't put in the effort.

Popped into the Abbey Grange this afternoon for a bar meal.Seeing the bar area empty should have rung alarm bells. We ordered food ,scampi, curry and a steak/guiness pie. The chips were of the frozen variety and had no taste. My pie had a rock-hard,burnt pastry covering a solid mass of overdone meat. As a waitress went past, she asked if I wanted some gravy as it looked dry.Even with more gravy, it was still unedible. The veg was from the carvery and had been stewing for quite a while by the taste of it.The majority of the curry was left by my wife,as I am sure it was the same rock-hard piece of meat My Grandson had the scampi, that was nice but he left everything else. I refused to pay the ten pounds for the pie and begrudged paying for the rest.Definitely better places to go. Will never call again..

Went because they advertised a carvery. Was told it had just finished but they could cook us a roast dinner!!!! Without doubt this was the worst meal we hve ever had. My wifes roast came without roast potatoes, and when she questioned this the girl looked shocked. Ten minutes later she returned with three roasties in a bowl stating that they had given her an extra one because of the mistake. Do not go there it is terrible...The worst meal...............ever..........

Stopped here on the way back from a weekend away. Never again, the staff were awful the food matched them and how embarrasing to have to carry a wooden cart horse with a number on denoting your table number.(Childish beyond belief) This is the fawlty towers of Wales make no mistake.....in fact it even has its own moose head. How this even manages to serve food is beyond me as the cleanliness of the place was something to be concerned about. I can only apologise to visitors to this pub/restaurant. If i were you i would try one of the many fine eateries in LLangollen itself

I recently stopped at Abbey Grange for a meal and a drink during a walking break with friends. As we walked into the car park we are hit with an overwhelming smell of manure, however as this was the country side that was put to one side. However once we arrived at the bar it was not only the air that stunk but also the service. After deciding that maybe only a drink would be a good idea we ordered a few pints of the local ale from a very grumpy barman. One of my friends also brought a pack of scratchings, but on looking at the package saw that they were over a year past their sell by date. This was pointed out to the barman who responded with "fine here have these" and threw a packet of crisps in our general direction and walked off. Calling him back it was pointed out that we wanted scratching and not crisps and would just like a refund. Well you would have thought we had just slapped him in the face and called him a turnip by the look he gave. "You are joking aren't you? You are really moaning about getting 85p back" was his response. "I can't refund your money as I will be out of pocket" was his next unbelievable statement. He was actually trying to make us feel guilty for him serving us out of date scratchings. When he saw that we were not going to give up on this, he finally said we could have a free pint. This was reluctantly accepted, but even the beers tasted horrible. In fact you could have stuck a load of dirt and a pansy in a glass and it would have tasted better. So to close I would say never ever go anywhere near this hotel, I am actually thinking it was not manure we were smelling on the way in, but in fact the hotel itself. Oh and the pillar by the entrance was crooked.

Me and my girlfriend stopped off here after going for a drive around the magnificent place. We went in and ordered or the specials board as the prices on this was a bit more reasonable. We waited 20 mind before being told what I had ordered was not available. I had then chosen the same as my girlfriend.(Braised steak)When it finally came out the microwave the steakdid not fall to bits as braised steak should, instead we needed a chainsaw to eat our meal.He then asked me to pay extra as this meal was £2 more the what I had ordered in the first place. Will not be going there again.

Had breakfast and evening meal here. Breakfast below average - certainly not up to Holiday Inn and the like, but was served by a pleasant and helpful eastern european man.Two out of eleven who dined in the evening in our party - sent back a substantial part of the meal.

What a change to this place, new management clearly know what they are doing and deserve all of our support, especially after the previous incumbents (literally). Ate there today 31st October and had a lovely meal from a very good pub menu, just what this place wanted, give it a go, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

We stayed here for a stag weekend and the staff were great, the atmosphere was great, and we were super impressed with the food, especially breakfast (veggie brioche - trust me). The hotel was a bit wonky but the beds were comfy, the biscuits were topped up, and the showers were hot. We'd definitely stay again. Thanks Gales!
