I've had this takeaway multiple times. And as conclusion, I think that it really depends on what you get. Very well seasoned and flavourful. Again depending on what you get | Recommendations: Anything with mushrooms, salty and spicy onion rings.

Friendly service and good portions. We tried a take away from here after being recommended by friends. They were able to cater for my wheat intolerance which was fantastic, they were knowledgeable about what I could and couldn’t eat. Overall a very good experience, we will be back!

The experience was extremely disappointing. I opted for egg fried rice and barbecue sauce chicken wings, but what I received was far from satisfactory. I'm confident that they served me rice that was scraped from the bottom of the pot. The rice seemed overcooked and had a burnt aroma, making it unappetising to both the eyes and the palate. Overall, I deeply regretted my decision to try the food.

We have been using this chinese for at least 15 years and it has always been our favourite. Unfortunately, the ingredients and cooking skill has drastically changed. This is the second time we have had dishes that were poor and completely unrecognisable from their previous recipes. The chicken with yellow bean was bulked out with cucumber bizarrely. The previous order didn’t have any cashews. Neither had the lovely chunky bamboo shoots that we used to enjoy in that dish. My husband ordered chicken with bamboo shoots and water chestnuts and there was absolutely no water chestnuts at all. None. The small pieces of chicken were not as plentiful as before. The plain noodles were burnt. I’m very sad to say that we can no longer order from here.

Oh dear! It is hard to conceive that over three years a business could continue to decline, but this place has. The food is dreadful and far worse than my previous visit. The restaurant is very dimly lit, presumably to hide what is essentially an untidy mess an disguise the presentation of the food. The sharing platter is straight off a frozen food menu and at £18 is daylight robbery. The accompanying sauces were thin and flavourless. The “Banquet” and I use the term loosely, at £35pp plus £6.50 pp for Duck is contemptible given the quality of food and service provided. The shredded duck was tasteless and unseasoned and the accompanying sauce was cheap and nasty. The main courses were dreadful. Grossly overcooked - the beef and green pepper in black bean sauce was slimy and the sauce was thick and far too intense. The rice was disappointing and the bean sprouts so overcooked they were grey and limp. The chicken dish showed a little promise but again lacked flavour and seasoning. Throughout the entire meal there was the overpowering flavour of white pepper in every dish. This meal was far removed from good Chinese food. The food produced is not that of a competent Chinese chef, rather the product of a domestic cook who is preparing food based on YouTube videos. The owners should take time to visit a high end restaurant in China town and reset their targets. The restaurant also had no red wine in stock and no chilli dressing??? Corner shop must be closed. With an empty restaurant on a weekend evening, the death knell is ringing for this place . Unless prices are slashed to match the food quality or the food quality and service is improved to meet the prices charged, this business will be unable to continue trading in the current economic climate, which would certainly be a blessing for all future customers.

Had a take away from this place a few weeks back and it was awful! We have lived in Market Harboough since 2001, and have used Abbey Cottage sparingly over that time, because when it comes to chinese food, we try and eat in restaurants as opposed to to taking out (the default chinese restaurant in Harborough is Han - always been superb). Over the past couple of years, we have used Abbey Cotage maybe 5 or 6 times (lock-down - only take aways), and each time, the food has got worse. This last time, most of it went in the bin! The first to go in the bin was the prawn toast - stale looking and stale taste. The next 2 items to go in the bin was the curry (funny colour and horrible detergent-like taste), and the chips (like the pranw toast, had a stale taste). Never again!

I’ll say this at the start we have been loyal customers to Abbey Cottage for over 10 years, but the last two deliveries have been shocking, 1) the crispy duck was soggy and half cooked 2) salt and Chillie ribs were soaking and just lumps of Soggy greasy gristle 3) the chicken meat in the curries was stripes of god knows what part of the chicken 4) the salt levels were shocking 5) Crispy wanton had not Ton With the Wan, tasteless ! I’m distraught as I would have argued till the cows came home that this was the best Chinese in Harborough, It’s NOT any more; not sure what’s going on but they have lost a loyal customer tonight

Decided on a Saturday night takeaway. Service was speedy and food was ready when ordered. Was very disappointed when I got the food home as it was warm rather than hot. The containers felt hot but despite dishing up onto hot plates the food could only be described as lukewarm. Altogether a disappointing experience as when I eat, takeaway or eat in I expect my food to be HOT.

Unfortunately, the wrong order was delivered (the second time this has happened from this takeaway). The 'wrong' food looked very greasy and unappetizing. After calling the restaurant, our order was re-cooked, and delivered within half an hour. This looked much fresher and less greasy. We tucked in and it was fine. Not the best Chinese takeaway we've ever had, but certainly not the worst either. Would we return? Possibly, although there are plenty of other takeaways in town to choose from.

We live about 20 mins away but we're desperate for some Chinese food during this lockdown and with very few places open including our own regular takeaway we decided to go off the best reviews of a few places and abbey cottage was the best overall. Ordering was tricky as the lines were constantly busy but afer getting through I can't fault the order process or even the collection service offered during this time. However this is where all the good stuff ends. Got home and expected to enjoy some dinner. The chicken balls were inedible. Absolutely disgusting they all went in the bin as I was reluctant to feed them to my dog. The chicken curry was mainly huge pieces of onion but the chicken that was in there was also inedible and did not taste fresh. The sauce was gloopy and the order of rice also did not taste too fresh either. Overall I will never order takeaway from them again but I had to award some stars for their service.

We ordered a takeaway from here tonight and it was absolutely disgusting! We had to throw most of it away, which we were very angry about as it cost a lot of money. We ordered the mixed appetisers to start, which were cold and covered with a think, bright orange, glutenous liquid. My satay beef was also cold and fatty, in a sauce that tasted like peanut butter from a jar. I was nearly sick after the first mouthful. My husband had the chicken curry and he barely touched it, as it was so vile. The food we ate tonight did not taste like genuine, Chinese food. If you want that, go to Swallow Cottage on Coventry Road, which is unfortunately closed at the moment. We had a delicious meal from there the other night. If I could leave no stars for this restaurant I would. It is the worst food we have tasted in a long time.

Food not too bad, on par with a take away.Waiting staff, very polite and as attentive as they could be.Such a pity that we had to wait a long time for food. This restaurant also serves as take away from the kitchen, and delivery drivers were kept busy, orders were flying out. In fact I think we could have ordered a take out and had it delivered quicker than we had a meal served to us in the restaurant . I think perhaps the thriving takeout is affecting the restaurant clientele who are paying for the service...which is not very good.

Both my wife and I thought that our individual meals were poor. Helpings were smaller than my usual place and the flavours just were there. No way did it taste authentic. More like an English person cooking it for the first time from a recipe. Meat had no flavour got the impression it had been stirred into the sauce at the last minute. I ordered scallops with ginger and spring onion from the Abbey Cottage tonight. Upon opening the container and transferring it onto a plate, it was apparent that there was a distinct lack of scallops, in fact I was having a very hard time finding any! I fished through the onions and sauce and placed the tiny pieces of scallops to one side of the plate. There was less than one whole scallop there!! For £8 plus the £2.25 for the rice, it was an absolute joke to say the least. I called up to complain and they sent another one out. Same tiny container.. I was hoping to open it to find a decent amount of scallops this time. It was apparent straight away that this was certainly not going to be the case. I fished through the sauce and again put all the pieces of scallops to the side only to find the exact same amount in this one!! Unbelievable!! I called up again to be asked what they wanted me to do about it? I replied that it would be nice if they could send me out some scallops as I offered. I was told that this wouldn’t be possible as they’re all pre portioned and if they sent another, it would be the exact same as the last two. I’m still shocked that they can call this dish scallops with ginger and spring onion. I don’t know what else to say other than I won’t be ordering from them ever again. Poor poor show and they should be ashamed to send out portions like this. Never again!

My family often find it hard to find a good takeaway as we are all vegetarians and I am allergic to gluten. Since the closure of our regular Chinese in Market Harb, Mei Wah- we decided to move across the road to the quaint looking and slightly dearer restaurant Abbey Cottage. We regularly order the same food making sure to get vermicelli noodles as they are without wheat and to ask for no fish on the seaweed etc... But several times we have had are order delivered to find that this is not the case. As I have made it abundantly clear I cannot eat any sauces (except sweet and sour) often our vermicelli or rice has come drenched in soy or spicy Singapore sauce. To our horror our last order came with chicken and prawns both of which are insulting and completely ruin our meal as a family of vegetarians, because this means we have to wait about half an hour until our meal can start. However this time we phoned back explaining that this was the 5th time something had gone wrong, just for the lady at the other end of the phone to blame my mother for not making it clear- although she said at the beginning of the order that everything must be without meat or fish. I have never overheard a phone call with such a rude tone, putting blame entirely on the customer. My personal recommendation is that if you want a simple Chinese meal, and do not mind doing a lucky dip of random dishes, then yes the food is okay and up to a certain standard. However if you wish to amend any part of it or have any requirements- GO ELSEWHERE as time and again this restaurant has failed mine and many other friends expectations to cater to their customers.

The first thing that struck us was the lack of Chinese people running the place, we've been to many beautiful Chinese restaurants and have always been greeted and cooked for by the same culture of the food. It really lacked the taste that you get from other Chinese restaurants. The service was spot on, very quick and to the point. But the food massively lacked the taste that you'd usually get from a top class Chinese restaurant. If you're looking for food to fill a hungover or drunk belly this is he place. Location is excellent and situated just off town centre and between the three major Hotels in the town.Cleanliness could not fault it,everywhere was clean and fresh. Service was very prompt, but then I did arrive at the latter part of the evening, but this sometimes gives a much clearer idea of an establishment's ability to maintain its standards throughout the evening. Was not greatest start when we ask for a particular wine.(nothing special) but was told they only serve their own house wine. I then asked for a pint of cider, again this could not be done and could only be offered a bottle as they " Do not sell enough draft beers or ciders)Food wise the standard bowl of complimentary crackers and these came with the tiniest bowl of chili sauce that was just oil and no more than a spoonful of it, and was tasteless and did not go unnoticed that the crackers came of a large bowl with bags of crackers in ready made for take aways. For a starter we had the Special platter at over £12, it was not much better than what you could have got from frozen section of a supermarket for a couple of pound.main meal was standard food although to be fair the menu did have a few slightly different dishes. The main meal was basically what I would expect from a takeaway. I think this is always the problem when a restaurant does both, Whilst you you expect a higher quality of meal in a restaurant to be higher, here it seemed they had gone for the lower option of making the food to the same standard as a takeaway. At the end of the main course no dessert or coffee or drinks were offered, more than clear staff were just waiting to go home. But for me if an establishment is open till say 11pm this should mean you should be able to order up to this time and not ushered out by that time..Atmosphere wise the standard tv in the take away counter and people coming in and out to collect food whilst you are eating does not go well. As for service as I have said was efficient, but the overall atmosphere was mixed with English Music being played British Tv on and non Chinese staff just does not work for me.Probably fine as a takeaway but to be charged over twice the price to have someone tip would have gone in a plastic tub and put on a plate at home as opposed to someone in the restaurantOverall not bad,not great, nothing special. and with about a quarter of the space given up to take away service, it will remain so..

This evening (sun 30th) I have had a take away from Abbey Cottage. The phone was answered promptly and politely, order placed and paid for. Delivery would be within the hour, in fact it was within half an hour. Food gorgeous, piping hot, and tasted delicious.

My wife is Coeliac so can't usually eat Chinese food, however the owner was very helpful in advising of options and she had sizzling Chicken with ginger and spring onion sauce. Also Gluten free mushroom rice (no soy sauce). She enjoyed it very much.I had the sizzling fillet steak in a sweet Cantonese sauce and this was delicious .Also the waitress was very friendly so would recommend, we will go back again.

Been here a couple of times now and the service is good, the waiting staff are very nice, the food is consistently freshly cooked and delicious though the portions are a little small. The ambience is lacking due to the lack of presence of Chinese music and Chinese waiting staff. These are the only two notable complaints as they do lead to the experience being rather standard.

Came here for the first time. Initial impression was okay, served straight away by a Scottish lady.Started our order"Chicken chow meinBeef in black bean..."Waitress: hang on Im on the restaurant menu, start again"Chicken chow mein,Beef in black beanYung chow fried riceSpecial curryChicken balls"£25 the total was.25 minute wait so we went and came back.Collected our order and drove homeOnly to find that my much desired beef in black bean was not there. And my chow mein had beef in it not chicken. Also had 2 servings of fried rice.So I rang up to get confirmation and hopefully an apologyInstead I get the very defensive waitress who recounted our order to me as:"Beef chow meinChicken fried riceYung chow fried riceSpecial curryAnd chicken balls"I stated that she had made a mistake and she continued to state that she would never type it in wrong and that it must have been my order. It got to the point where I said "you got it wrong I'm just letting you know" and hung up.Whatever happened to "the customer is always right"? Will not be going back. Will instead try hans over the road as that has better reviews.Should have read up about their shoddy waitress beforehand as other reviews stated their disapproval too!!!

Quite simply the best Chinese in Market Harborough because it doesn't make you thirsty, you can enjoy your meal knowing you won't have a raging thirst all night.I love the sweet and sour chicken balls, must be home made, delicious and crispy. We've tried several but always come back here now.

Small place with a takeaway service that appears to take priority over seated customers. We waited over an hour for OK food. I heard the waitress tell another table waiting for their food "it takes as long as it takes".We witnessed 8 people get up and leave whilst we waited, but we stuck it out.A bit pricey for what it is, and to top it all we had to get the Manager to add the bill up for us as the waitress couldn't get it right (strangely enough not in our favour). The 2 star rating is totally for the food, the service is a zero.Possibly the worst service I have ever encountered.

All in all not a bad meal. We sat in rather than take away. Young gentleman that looked after us was very polite but it was very busy. Food was cooked to a good standard.

The food here was very good, but the restaurant does look a little tired around the edges and I couldn't help noticing the takeaway transporting boxes stacked up in the hallway right next to the toilets! (not very hygienic!)the music did not fit with the restaurant at all and it was slightly strange having the soaps on TV in the middle of the place. Also we ordered from the set menu but the waiter forgot completely to give us the dessert that we had paid for. Has a lot of potential but needs some issues addressing before I would go again.

Quite simply, for me, the best of the bunch in Harborough. Always busy, varied menu, and at good prices keeps this place as it should be, an honest, 'does what it says on the tin' Chinese restaurant.

This is an interesting place as it's an old fire station. The food we had was tasty and the service was second to none, the atmosphere wasn't great as we ate early and therefore the place didn't have many people about.I would definitely recommend this restaurant

So Expensive - They charge like a wounded bull for, at best, mediocre food - 11 quid for a bowl of Special Fried Rice - let me tell you, no rice is THAT special.most mains around a tenner..!They put both the takeaway and sit dowm menu in the window - make sure that, un-like us, you check out the Sit down proces before entering.Enter at your peril...Lovely building outside - former victorian fire station - if you are expecting the same inside you will be severely disappointed - not reflected whatsoever inside - it's like eating (lunch) in an office..!European staff (their family & friends constantly coming and going) & totally devoid of any atmosphere (authentic or otherwise) - tables far too close together.Ordered drinks - saw the prices - when I recovered I wanted to leave - but being english didn't feel able to... - wish we had - ate and left (no tip) as soon as possible.....Learn from our mistake - we will never be back... ever...

A family visit to the abbey cottage turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Unfortunately we were the only table eating but they were very busy with take always The food was delicious and the service very good our waitress was attentive and friendly although not the most skilled. The portions were massive probably too big we couldn't eat everything. As for the price not the cheapest but reasonable value!I would prefer smaller cheaper dishes and order more but each to there own!We will return !!!
