Pleasant service and a pleasant pub with good food. Went back there several times

A superb bar where you immediately feel good. The staff is super friendly, the place is cozy and the music isn't too loud. I came there alone for a dinner so I didn't really enjoy the atmosphere but I'm sure that coming with friends must be a very good experience. I ordered the pie steak and ale, with a side of mash. I asked the waiter which accompaniment was homemade between the mash, fries and fried potatoes. He didn't really know how to answer me (probably because of my bad English) but told me that the best option was puree. And indeed, the fries seemed frozen from what I could see on a neighboring table. Regarding my mash, it wasn't really incredible. She was nothing more. The pie was more of a ramekin of filling with puff pastry placed on top. It's quite clever because it avoids cooking whole pies I suppose, but suddenly you have the impression of eating two separate elements rather than one dish. There is no real osmosis created between the two. Just boiled vegetables were of little benefit, but eating healthy and steamed from time to time doesn't hurt. Overall, the dish was acceptable but not amazing. However, the service was really good. The servers were adorable and welcoming. I had a great time at The Abbey and will probably return. The rating is more than adequate. I got it for £13.95 which is very acceptable. In summary? Friendly bar, top service, cuisine not exceptional but adequate. I think it's a great place to come with friends for a drink.

What a great place to have a drink or a meal. The atmosphere is amazing and filled with locals either on their way home from work or out with the family for some home (pub) cooking. They have a Malt Scotch of the month at a very reasonable price. I didn’t try it as I am not a Scotch person. I did ask the waitress to surprise me with a nice local beer and she brought an Ale that was locally made - I loved it. So many great local beers to choose from which makes it such an interesting pub. The food was excellent. I had the lasagna which was a special and my wife had fish and vegetables. Both were delicious. There are also 5 or 6 specials to chose from. We shared a Sticky Toffee Pudding with ice cream. Amazing. Finally the service was attentive and very knowledgeable, from the beer to the food to offering us some tips on using the public transit. Tipping is not expected but we had to recognize her with a nice tip. If you are in the area you have to drop in.

Came for lunch at The Abbey with family. The burgers were massive and nice. The chicken strips for a starter were disappointing. Don’t know if I’d rush back but food was pleasant enough. Drink was pretty cheap

Fantastic pub 1st time in it for ages brilliant breakfast

Please don't leave Edinburg without trying one of their Whiskey flights. They have several types and they will give you the chance to enjoy a variety of whiskeys. Many other places in Edinburg offer whiskey flights but this is definitely a good place to try one. Enjoy!!

Welcomed without a reservation and with a smile that takes your breath away, this is the best pub in all of Edinburgh. We had to run away due to an unexpected phone call but we hope to return on our next trip. Highly recommended place!

Great pub, out of the way enough to avoid tourist crowds. Some of the best food I had in Edinburgh and great options for whisky and ales. Dined for breakfast and dinner and enjoyed both. Try the haggis and puddings.

We went to have the typical Scottish breakfast and we loved it. The staff is very attentive and friendly and the food was very delicious and also at a good price. They have a vegetarian and vegan breakfast option.

I loved this place found randomly near the hotel where I stayed. The food was exquisite, juicy and delicious. The service was super pleasant, the guy who served us recommended a smoky whiskey and even let us smell it before trying it, he was friendly, helpful and kind. To be honest I have walked past this place thinking it was a working man's pub but I'm so glad I was wrong the food is fab & very good price nothing to much trouble for the staff don't even need 2 go back & forth to the bar all drinks brought to your table the only downside for me is that's it's mostly football on the TV no Moto GP shown or music played but defo worth going back

Classic boozer, epic pint of Guinness and they also have a million whiskies which is impressive… real nice Bloody Mary’s and pub food too, highlights include bangers and mash that has the best onion gravy and comes in a boat looks like cartoon food 🤞🙏 lots of people but the vibe did not feel unwelcome 👍

Food was always delicious. Haggis Bon Bons on point, Mac and Cheese really cheesy and flavorful, great Beer and Whisky drams. Came next morning for Scottish Breakfast and I left a very clean plate. Staff is great, and honestly, tomorrow I'll probably go again.

Easily my favourite whisky experience in Edinburgh. Chris is very knowledgeable, and made excellent recommendations that were tailored to my taste. The bar has a huge selection of whisky, particularly ones which are less common outside of Scotland. I visited the Abbey twice during my trip, and my only regret is not going there sooner!

The food was tastie and filling looking around the place there was always empty plate going back .ps my friend want to marry the cook.

On a 5 day holiday here I’ve come here more than once. I usually prefer visiting a different restaurant every night but I couldn’t resist coming here multiple times. The service is fantastic, especially with their whiskey. Josh, sat next to me and explained the different whiskeys to me without being condescending. His service is incredible, and he remembered us each time we came. Speaking of whiskey, their flights are sorted by region, taste, age. Then a selection of 500 other bottles. The food is magnificent. Their Haggis is a must try, it’s a lot better than I expected. Their steak pie is also a great talking point with magnificent plating for both dishes.

Very disappointed with the food, frozen style oven chips that were soggy and cold ,served with non seasoned fish. Waitress was great, friendly and helpful.

I ordered the venison and it was delicious highly recommended my friend had steak pie 🥧 which was also delicious we will definitely be there soon

(Written by Brian Watt - partner) Five of us had a family meal in the Abbey last Saturday evening and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The food was great and with a varied menu which suited two vegetarians among us. Service was quick and friendly and being a long-established local pub it has a wide variety of popular beers and lagers. We go out every couple of months and tend to go to City Centre restaurants where the beer choice is very limited ! We commented the following day what good value the Abbey is - both for the meals and the alcoholic/soft drinks we were ordering. I should mention as well that the person serving us happened to hear us talking about the Snooker that was on TV that week and without any prompting on our part he had it showing on a couple of their many TVs. That was a nice touch. We all agreed we'd go back and I can highly recommend it to others, be it Edinburgh locals like ourselves or tourists visiting the city.

Food and service were top quality. The table we had was a bit cramped for 4.

Came here just now for my birthday breakfast, both portions of food were perfect. (Poached eggs, smashed avocado, salmon, sour dough bread) Cappacino made with finesse, friendly and professional staff, very busy place but very warm and friendly atmosphere. Been here a few times before but keeps getting better every time I'm here.

This place is great. Great to watch a football match at, good drink selection and the breakfast will keep you fuelled for the entire day. Cant wait to come back

From the outside appears a regular pub towards the outskirts of the city. Don't let appearances deceive you. This place must have one of the best whiskey selections in the whole city. Around 400 I believe. I came in for a Scottish breakfast the next day which was absolutely delicious, served by very friendly staff and at a very reasonable price. I'll definitely call in again next time I'm at this end of town.

Echt een Britse / Schotse pub, goed voer, de IronSteak is echt een grote aanrader. Alle klassiekers op de kaart en ook van specials. Bediening is snel en vriendelijk. Je kan een huisgemaakt glas kopen voor 10€....en daarnaast een zeer ruim assortiment aan whisky's, van Amerikaasn, tot Iers en van een standaard slobber whiskytje tot 1 glas van 250£. Dus voor ieder wat wils. Veel lokale mensen em dat zegt voor mij alles.

Been going to Abbey Bar for years...Staff are friendly and attentive and never seem flustered under pressure...it's a joy to go there...I've introduced several friends.. Keep up with great standards... See you soon and when in for Xmas too...

Had a good time here, sort of stumbled across it. The bar lady was very friendly. We only had drinks which were very reasonably priced. The place was a little smelly, my only negative.

Wir waren fast jeden Tag (3 von 4) dort. Angenehme Bedienung und gutes Essen zu zivilen Preisen. Und das Bier 🍺 war auch lecker Am letzten Abend haben wir verschiedene Whisky Sorten ausprobiert, lecker 😋

My Negroni looked like Irn brew, it's supposed to be red! They must have used white vermouth instead of red, I did mention it to a girl who was serving but she just smiled and walked away. It was horrible. If you don't have red vermouth available, just say! Unfortunately I am unable to have evenings out very often and this spoilt it for me. I was looking forward to it. Apart from that it was okay.

The staff is very busy and almost friendly, but reacts quickly annoyed. Don't try to order if the bartender doesn't ask you to! Otherwise you will be informed about how many customers he is currently serving. 😉 Unfortunately, I threw a glass on the floor. (With my elbow, an empty glass, not my own, set on a narrow ledge) My offer to sweep up the rubble myself was rudely refused, and the lady took a rude turn on my apology. I was a little gleeful when, shortly after, she smashed a glass herself behind the bar. Now to the positive: It is a very nice bar with an extremely great choice of Whisky and Whiskey. Even the choice of different beers has to be mentioned. And if it is your turn to order, you will be served quickly and friendly. All in all a very good location to spend your evening. And, staff: Try to be more relaxed even with foreigners who are not familiar with scottish bar rules. That would make The Abbey perfect. 👍🏻

The Abbey is a top drawer establishment. Every single staff member was polite, the service was very fast, food was great and the Guinness is easily the best I've had in Edinburgh. What's not to like?
