A Taskinha Portuguese Cafe and Store in Plymouth

One of my favourite restaurants. I travel a lot with work and this is a really amazing find. The restaurant is authentically themed Portuguese with a friendly Portuguese family running it. One of the first things you notice is how happy the staff are, although I don't understand Portuguese I can tell the banter is alive! I arrived at 8pm on Tuesday and was seated immediately in their large restaurant. The restaurant is barely visible from the front but the building is like a tardis, once you step inside the size of the place and the authenticity open up before your eyes. On this occasion I had Tuna with chips and salad, previously I had a seafood and rice dish (see photos) called Cateplana. On both occasions the food was perfectly cooked and the portions are phenomenal. I'd say that you should arrive hungry and expect to leave complete! I had the Tuna, salad and chips (14.5) half carafe (50cl) of red wine for 9. Previously, Cateplana for 22, Lg glass of red 6.5. Both excellent value. I look forward to returning very soon.

Excellent ‘hidden’ gem ! Lovely food and super friendly staff. I had the house steak, best steak I’ve ever had, perfectly cook. Friends had the chicken which was excellent. Would absolutely recommend and will be back. Inside is decorated really nicely, also bonus of a shop at the front selling Portuguese foods !

Couldn’t ask for more. Very welcoming. Chef within full view. I had mixed meat on skewers with chips and salad with a Sagres beer, finishing off with a coffee. All typically Portuguese. Great value for money.

Wasn't sure about this little cafe when I found it on Google maps but popped my head in before confirming and was pleasantly surprised at the lovely welcome from the staff , decor and smells coming from the kitchen. Stayed for a selection of Portuguese tapas which was amazing. Especially the gambas and the chorizo New favourite restaurant in Plymouth. Even went back for morning coffee and pastries

Good food . Good coffee. Clean place

I can only say bad things: I always leave stuffed and wanting to go back. This place is not good, it is addictive. Furthermore, there are loads of things that just encourage us to buy. I have a house full of articles from this place. I've already complained to the police but they didn't do anything, I was the one being arrested.

The best roasted chicken in Plymouth!

Dated decor, simple menu, good grilled chicken. It's not a bad place to eat and drink with friends.

Rustic venue with delicious, good-value food!

Friendly chef, we were the first people in for dinner. My friends enjoyed their food, I had the steak sandwich which was fine but really heavy and sad bread. Nice enough and very full, just could have felt more fresh. My friends had eve mixed grill and the sea bream and enjoyed.

We came in it was actually quite late, still the staff was willing to serve us and were quite welcoming even when the place was busy. The menu it was actually quite good and they had everything that was on it, we decided to order the Steak Sandwich Francesinha which it was great and full of taste, we also saw they are specialised in Chicken which we will definitely want to try if we come back again. The prices were quite affordable and we had a great experience overall. The parking is located on the back of the street which is paid but not so expensive in case there’s no space available on the front of the restaurant l.

Excellent Portuguese food. Outside looks like a coffee shop, but there is a proper restaurant at the back, decorated like a Portuguese countryside place. Food is prepared in an open kitchen and the chef is the owner, providing you with the best possible food with amazing flavours. You can drink a Súperbock while waiting for your food and end the meal with a pasteis de nata.

It made me feel like I was back in Portugal. A family environment, very helpul and efficient. The food was great. A place to definitely revisit.

Always love passing and popping in for the best espresso ,cold draught lager and chicken was so tasty today and omg I've had the black pudding with pineapple on top delicious !!! Atmosphere really chill and always feel welcome here just such a warming family vibe thank you 😊

A lovely little place to eat, definitely one of my favourite go to places to each with family and friends. Always good food and the service is always friendly and welcoming. I just wish my Portuguese was better, but I suppose now I have a good reason to work on that. Thank you guys for all your hard work. Sua comida é muito deliciosa e o serviço é fantástico.

This place really makes you feel like you’re on holiday in Portugal. Soo delicious. This is not our first time and it certainly won’t be our last. Some of the best food in Plymouth.

Great Place, Great People, Great Food!

A little gem of a place, recommended by a colleague hosting a training course in Plymouth. The 9 of us were delighted at the excellent food, service and friendliness of the venue. Excellent value and quality of food and the staff were super helpful and informative. I would recommend that you seek this out if visiting Plymouth.

It was very tasty and had a very family feeling to the restaurant. I had the half chicken with chips and the salad was really tasty and wasn't dry.

Awesome and authentic Portuguese food, Pedro & Elsa are very warm hosts. Been here countless times and never been disappointed. Their Portuguese produce they sell is reasonably priced & have a wide range. We sometimes have a coffee to finish off our meal & it’s definitely worth the extra bit of cash… love to support local businesses.

Amazing and authentic spot . The service was brilliant , they promised to be speedy as we were in a rush and delivered ! The chef took time to speak with us and served our food within 15 minutes of being seated . Seeing the open kitchen was great and the range of Portuguese products on sale was interesting to browse . Will definitely be back !

A pre theatre meal and, as ever, did not disappoint. A frango to die for and all the sides with a truly authentic Portuguese atmosphere.... Try it you will like it!!

A little bit of Portuguese deliciousness here in Plymouth. A must visit place.

Have been here a number of times now. Mains include salt cod and rice, Francesinha and octopus today. I have been with work colleagues and family including fussy children. The food has always been well cooked and accessable for all tastes whether adventurous or not. Today the octopus was tasty and tender. For me it is a food that can easily be got wrong but not close to that. Francesinha is worth the world eating. Staff are always friendly and engaging.

We drove 37 miles purpose just to go there. We went today for the first time. Lovely people, amazing food, and a lovely atmosphere as well. For sure we will be back. Obrigada :)

Excellent place for Portuguese​ coffee, lunch and dinner. Also good for buying Portuguese groceries and wines. My go to place for many reasons!

Absolutely worth the trip, a taste from home.

First time eating there and it won't be the last. Lovely food and relaxed atmosphere. Don't be put off by the shop front outside. It is Portuguese and feels so relaxed.

Fantastic service with beautiful food, the only downside if you go in with a lot of people it takes ages to finally get served your food, apart from that its a fantastic restaurant

If you are new to Portuguese cuisine it is one of the most diverse and at the same time most satisfying cuisines in Europe and as good as it is there is a lot more to it than Peri Peri Chicken. We have been to Portugal many many times from Braga and Giumares in the north to Beja and Evora in the south and what this restaurant does is completely replicate those dishes from the different areas, add to this really good staff and a fantastic atmosphere this has to be one of the best restaurants in Plymouth. We started with a sharing platter of meats, cheeses and olives and the Churica was heavenly. Then my wife had a Chicken Skewer and I had Pork with Clams and pickles. All the dishes we fantastic. If they were open tonight I would be back there. Prices very reasonable and portions good, and served fresh and hot. We loved it. Give it a try.

We visited on a Saturday evening and were very grateful to the manager who managed to fit us in despite being fully booked. Gorgeous food, beautifully cooked (their skewers are something else, and the pastries make you realise how much flavour is missing from supermarket pasteis de nata), and just a lovely atmosphere to the place - real sense of community, with folk sitting around drinking coffee into the evening, and families everywhere.

Every time I have been to this restaurant I have walked away happy and tonight was no exception. Managed to get a table without booking. The waiter was extremely friendly and polite. Gave us a full descriptions of the menu items and even explained what part of Portugal the recipes were from. He recommended a wine that was exquisite. The food was, as usual, stunning. The skewer I had was full of great big chunks of meat with superb chips - cooked with their skins - and veg. The steak my partner had was the best she'd had in at least 20 years and both were so reasonably priced. We were the last to leave but even then, as they were trying to slowly close up, when I asked if there was any chance of a coffee they said no problems at all. Ended taking the coffee out onto the table at the front of the shop outside and mellowed out until the restaurant closed. Don't be put off by people sat out front drinking coffee or beer; inside, out back, is the most beautiful little restaurant with fantastic food. The way it is set up and run, you could be in Portugal. Great night, amazing food, superb service and no rush at all. What more could you possibly want?

Unassuming place with a authentic feel to it. All three meals were delicious, particularly the octopus. Will be coming here again on my next visit to Plymouth.

Genuine Portuguese food, great atmosphere, great service service and brilliant value. Nowhere else like this place in Devon or even further afield. Will be returning soon

Just had a brilliant meal after being recommended by our neighbours……fantastic tasty food from tapas starters to octopus main & spicy chicken skewers with salad & amazing chips!!!Lovely staff, friendly & very helpful with choices……This is now our no. 1 for eating out 🤗

Second visit in two weeks love this place the foods great the atmosphere is just like I'd imagine it to be in a village restaurant in Portugal, I've been a few times and normally have the grilled chicken which is always spot on but last tonight tried the pichana steak that was cooked just how I asked, my wife had the pepper steak which again was Cooked to perfection, great wine and sagres on tap, the owner and his wife are very nice people and very welcoming nothing is too much for them. If your in the mood for real authentic food then look no further than this place.

Don't be fooled by looking in the window and thinking this is a small restaurant. It opens up inside passed the bar into wonderful large area. The food is extremely tasty and very reasonably priced. The service is efficient and friendly. Starter, main and desert...

It’s been a while since we visited as we live in Exeter but it’s definitely worth the drive. We had prawns, clams & squid for starters Followed by sardines and steak for mains finished off with Portuguese Crème Caramel - oh and a few pints...

I took 2 work friends here for a Christmas meal/meeting. None of us had been there before and all three of us will be going back. One had the Tina steak and two of us shared the 2 chickens meal. The chicken was cooked perfectly....

Reminds me of a Portuguese deli on Portobello Road I used to go to years ago...Chicken in a fresh bun and custard tarts....

It felt like being in Portugal. Pedro, Else and the staff made us extremely welcome. The food tasted great as did the Litre Portuguese wine. The Pastel de natas ( custard Tart) was brilliant. Very reasonably priced.. I will be taking more friends there.

Just finished having a lovely meal for 2! Food and atmosphere was brilliant! We had the mixed skewer and beef skewer which were amazing! Sooooo tasty and comes with 2 sides as well which was a bargain! We shared a tapas mix which was also plentiful and very tasty! We will be coming back 100% and will be bringing friends! The restaurant is really big out the back, you’d be surprised how nice it is! The waitress and chef were very welcoming! Can’t wait to try some new food on return

Popped in first for a coffee and roll, nice coofee...no excellent coffee and a nice roll! The place was lovely, Pedro and his wife were terrific and I took some of my family there the next day for lunch. Brilliant lunch, again we were all made most welcome and the food (and coffee) were delicious. I took my wife there for dinner a few days later. We both had steaks and they were excellent, once again Pedro and his wife made us feel so welcome...I really can't believe I have driven past this place so many times! What I have missed out of so so many years! I won't make that mistake again!

Happened to be in Plymouth for the day and had an early dinner, they did not disappoint at all. Since our last visit Taskinha has expanded as was promised....and what a good job they've made of it. It's now a spacious, bright, comfortable restaurant. The staff are very friendly, the food and wine both excellent. Cannot fault it, and we will definitely be back.

Brilliant asset to Union Street. Great hospitality and service - highly recommend. Pedro and Elsa will welcome you with open arms and with the best quality and bang for your buck in town; you’re in for a treat.

We were only in Plymouth for one night for a show and found this lovely Portuguese restaurant located behind the Pavilions, it isn't easy to find and looks quite small from the front but extends behind the front section into two eating areas with a charcoal grill where Pedro cooks the food. Lovely, friendly staff and good menu with a wide choice of wine. We both had mixed skewers which came with two sides; we each had a salad and shared a rice and chips. All freshly cooked, skewers were excellent (£12.50 each) and shared a jug of house red. Lovely atmosphere even though it was only 530pm. They had live music later which we would have loved, certainly would be a favourite for us if we lived here! Much better choice than the large chain pub nearby!!

We've been coming to this restaurant for a few years now, and we know Pedro well. However because we got a puppy we have not been in for a while, so when they refurbished and opened up next door we had to go back. We were definitely not disappointed! The food was amazing as always, all cooked by the owner Pedro himself. The prices are also what make this place so good, it is better than nandos but at almost half the price!

Fabulous restaurant with great food, wine & wonderful staff, Pedro & Ricardo. Even bought gluten free rolls for me.

It took us back to the back streets of Portugal Real local made food and lovely local cheap wine served by the litre. The sea food player was to die for

Oh dear! We paid nearly £40 for a meal that was not worthy of a Harvester carvery let alone any restaurant perporting to have 4.5 stars. Ambience completely lacking, service was good hence the single star. Poor aroma throughout. Food - well: I ordered the swordfish with salad and rice for £12.95. The fish was some odd white fish nothing like swordfish & evidently had been frozen and cooked before thaw. Salmon burger dry & pale from the freezer, with bread roll severely uncooked. Soup starter was blended vegetable mush of some kind that was almost tasteless. The service was the only good thing about this restaurant. Sorry we chose it before a concert @ The Pavillions.

You know you have been to a good restaurant when you realise that you resent writing a glowing report about it, because you know the review will be seized upon and then trying to get a table at sometime in the future is nigh on impossible.

Visitamos Taskinha con bastante frecuencia. Por lo general, tengo la "francesinha", pero hoy decidí probar el filete por primera vez. ¡Y qué buena opción! Muy tierno, con mucho, el mejor bistec que he probado en mucho tiempo. El servicio aquí también es una ventaja, muy amable. Elsa y Pedro siempre te hacen sentir como en casa. Siempre el lugar para ir cuando en Plymouth!

He estado aquí un par de veces, lo cual fue bueno. Esta fue mi primera vez en el nuevo restaurante. Tuvimos una gran fiesta familiar. Nos hicieron sentir bienvenidos. Nada era demasiado problema. La comida estuvo buena. Cualquier error (16 personas caóticas son difíciles de manejar) se resolvió rápidamente. Fue un ambiente encantador. Habrá más visitas, estoy seguro.

Well what can we say, just fanstatic, the food, the service and the staff and not over priced . If you want traditional Portuguese food forget Nandos eat here

I always recommend this place to those visiting Plymouth and want somewhere to eat. Chicken and chips done superbly, the Portuguese way, plus wine from there. What could be more perfect?! Don’t do Nando’s do here!

My husband and I had a meal there after a day of shopping in Plymouth. The Portuguese steak was fabulous and the salad very fresh! The coffee is probably the best in Plymouth. The sangria was also great. Will definitely be back and will recommend to friends.
