Laid back cocktail bar situated in the hip residential area of Mill Road. You can see this bar is loved by its neighbouring community and visitors to Cambridge alike. If you like cocktails this is a must.

Great cocktails. Nice place. But be aware they add service charge onto cocktails without telling you. Advertised nowhere on menu. Don’t mind paying a tip but automatically adding without telling you (and no receipt given) is not fair. Raised it with waitress and she said she’d inform manager. If you’re gonna hike prices for additional service then at least be up front with your customers

Great little find. Good food, great choice of cocktails, fab service. Nice waitress with short brown hair talked us through the extensive collection of interesting spirits available. Would recommend

Lovely cocktails in a quirky environment. A good stroll down Mill Road but well worth it. The cocktails were fantastic (proper quality ingredients) and the atmosphere was brilliant. Our trip to 196 really got our weekend in Cambridge off to a great start. Highly recommended

After several previous visits where I have always experienced excellent service I was really disappointed at how me and my friends were treated , The cocktails were not great , my friend had to ask for hers to be re mixed and then when asking for our bill we asked if they wouldn’t mind calling us a taxi , whilst sorting out our bill there were a couple of girls waiting for a table and one of them started verbally abusing my friend , not one of the staff came to support the situation which made us all feel very uncomfortable , we paid the bill which included an optional tip which we paid other than a very small amount, the taxi didn’t arrive so they gave me the number and told me to call ! The waitress then came and queried our bill and said it was short ! We explained the service charge was optional and we had paid the majority of it At this time the girls waiting for our table were becoming ruder , they then went outside , the waitress joined them and they were all laughing at us , I really couldn’t believe what I was seeing ! Never have I felt so disgusted and appalled at the way we were treated, I have never experienced anything like this before , a total letdown to what used to be a lovely place to visit , needless to say we will NOT BE RETURNING

We've visited 196 many times and the cocktails are always brilliant. Its a bit of a walk from the city centre but well worth it if you're after great drinks. The nibbles are also delicious and reasonable in price.

Buzzing and cool atmosphere, with low lighting and friendly staff. The waitress was great at recommending cocktails from the extensive menu, and the Clover Club I ordered was delicious. Nice selection of antipasti on the blackboard.

Great atmosphere and a superb array of cocktails and snacking boards. Our go to place in the City and easily the most authentic amongst other more commercial venues.

A habitual follow up after a Mill Road restaurant. Late nights are best with dim lighting and packed tables. Hand scrawled cocktail menus, crinkled from glass rings, add to the appeal. I’ve never had a drink that was less than excellent. Tobacco Old Fashioned fits perfectly with the downtempo vibe.

Do not be put off by the location or kerb appeal. The bar is extremely well run, makes amazing cocktails and creates an excellent atmosphere. The food/nibbles menu totally complements the whole feel and I can highly recommended the smoked mackerel pate 😬

If it was 3 times bigger, 196 would probably still be jammed. Two staff work non-stop in the corner mixing cocktails. The kitchen puts out a small selection of delicious snacks. I am travelling solo in Cambridge, they accommodated me gracefully, i had the smoked mackerel pate and the boquerones - both excellent - washed down with a martini and then a glass of white. All around very good - must return.

Cosy and cool bar with excellent cocktails- if you were taken here on a date you would love the candlelit atmosphere and impressive range of cocktails :)

My boyfriend and I turned up at around 9:45 it was really busy and we didn’t expect to get a table but by a good stroke of luck some people are just left so we got their table. We were seated inside and ordered a margarita and a caipirinha. It took about 15 minutes to get our drinks however we ordered another two when they arrived to keep the flow going. The atmosphere was great and the staff are really lovely. Cocktails were gorgeous and well-made and even though they were busy there was a lot of attention to detail.

Visited twice this week, as discovered this top cocktail bar on our first night a of mini break in Cambridge. Went back tonight as drinks were among, if not the best coctails we have ever had. Lovely, cosy feel inside on chilly and damp summer eve. Dropped one mark as 9.50 per drink is expensive.

Really great cosy vibe and a huge cocktail menu. We tried several cocktails and all of them were delicious. The staff were all ultra friendly and professional. And one of the male staff had amazing eyes. Worth a visit just for that I’d say.

Along buzzing Cambridge's Mill Road, yet tucked away from the historical center. Small but cozy, friendly staff, sublime cocktails and mouth watering generous platters to share! So pleased to be back at 196 Cocktail Bar after a year’s enforced absence! The team are excellent hosts and the Old Fashioned is superb….and that’s before I get onto the amazing smoked mackerel pate! Very highly recommended

Amazing service, even better drinks, didn’t try the nibbles as had just been for dinner! The young hip waiter was very friendly would recommend! Also the pomegranate margarita is a must!

I have been to 196 a few times and always enjoy it! The drinks are really nice and the staff are cool. The beer they have is really nice and a bit citrusy (yummy) and they do a really good roasted coconut daiquiri! The best is in the summer when you can sit outside, inside is a bit teeny but super cosy. Really cool and independent cocktail bar! Hopefully it can be kept a Cambridge secret, hidden away on Mill Road

Nice local place for a drink in the evening. Good list of cocktails, with classics and a few twists, and a good looking menu of bits to snack on. All staff were very friendly and a nice atmosphere on a fairly quiet Monday evening.

I visited this bar very often and the quality of the drinks is amazing every time i go there. The cocktails are done always the same way. Also they have a great soundtrack.

This is a fantastic, albeit small, cocktail bar situated on Mill Road. The menu is vast and the bar staff are very friendly and attentive. I visited here with 3 others one Saturday evening and were surprised how quiet it was however it was great as we managed to find a table with no problems. The cocktails are about £8 each, which isn't too costly for well made drinks. I'd highly recommend both the Tabacco Old Fashioned and the Bloody Mary.

We spent a lovely couple of evenings here last week. The cocktail menu is quite big and featured some drinks we hadn't tried before e.g. a Tobacco Old Fashioned. The staff were attentive, and the cocktails v good value (£7.95 or £8.95). We would definitely return!

Last Friday my husband and I visited 169. I haven't been to Mill Road since I lived there many years ago, I had noticed on google that there are now some gems on Mill Road. I was not disappointed, what a superb little cocktail bar! At last a place with the exact ambience that all bars should have! It's quite simple, candlelight, decent music (to compliment the ambience!) and damn fine cocktails! My all time fav is the Caipirinha which I first drank in Brazil back in the days! The premium one they make is possibly the best I've tasted. There is food also but we had previously just had some dim sum so wasn't hungry but the nibbles looked delish. I had a Mezcal Mary as my second drink which was good but maybe a bit too heavy. I have been wanting to try Mezcal for some time which is why I had it, should have just had a shot! Anyway, the only thing that I wasn't too delighted with was the bill! But saying this all cocktail bars are getting more expensive and when the cocktails are as good as this it's worth it. The staff were very polite and I loved the photos in the loo! Get there early as it gets busy and is very small which I love about it x

My favourite place to go for cocktails in Cambridge - only issue. It fills up fast as it's quite a small space. So get there early if you want a seat

Stopped by this lovely little bar for the first time later one weekday evening and even though there was limited seating I was fortunate to get a seat.

Met some friends here for pre-dinner cocktails. First time at 196 and whilst compact, the was a good buzz in the place. Service was good, extensive cocktail menu on offer and drinks arrived quickly. I went for my standard Mojito - perfect - the best I've had in Cambridge.

My wife and I arrived to a full house with one couple waiting to be seated at the bar. We were told 5 -10 minutes wait and we would get a seat also. Within a few minutes the other couple were seated.

Only recently discovered this place after visiting with a few girlfriends.Now it's my partner and I's favourite place to grab a drink. No they're not cheap but so, so, so amazing, the cocktails quality are worth every penny. (The pisco sours are my favourite!) And I feel that the measurements are very fair - I find sometimes cocktail bars can be lighthanded with the alcohol but these actually seem to have decent measur eof alcohol in them.

I really like 196. The cocktails are delicious and there is good variety. Best value in terms of cost & quality in Cambridge. This is enough to keep me going there, but there are a few things that sometimes make me think twice.

Living right around the corner from 196 I go there quite often. I'm generally not much of a cocktail drinker but love 196's cocktails. Only place outside of Spain that I had a decent Mojito so far! Food prices are a bit too expensive for what you get, so not eating there often.It's pretty small, but I think this gives the bar the charm it has. If you're in Cambridge, do go there! You're missing out if you don't.

My partner and I went to 196 ok Saturday. We have been before but it had been mobbed as it's such a small place.Amazing cocktails and they can make up ones that are not ok the menu like a long Island ice tea. Cocktails range from 7-10 pounds each. They do have options for food again pricy but we had duck pate which was lovely! Had a lovley warm cosy atmosphere but if you are planning to go friday/Saturday night get there around 6.30 as it gets very busy very quickly and it's not ideal for large groups unless your happy to sit outside with the patio heaters. Would recommend for a date night!

Quirky small cocktail bar on Mill Road. Great for catch up in a small group. Unlikely to get to table for anymore than 3 on Friday and Saturday evenings. Cocktails are quite pricey but there is a wide range. They also do requests!

I went here with friends and it was fab! I loved the menu style and the choice was amazing! I don't think I've ever seen such a good selection of classic and new cocktails in one place. Every one I tried was fab. This place is a little far out of town but it's not far from the station and much friendlier than a lot of the central Cambridge bars.

I love 196! Of course the brilliant cocktails are the best part of the place, but even all the food to share is really nice and the cosy dark atmosphere is excellent. The small size of it only makes it better. Please never get rid of the vanilla mojito!

I came here with my friend a few days ago - cocktails were great! I had a Bellini and she had one with raspberries in which she "never wanted it to end"! It was lovely sitting outside with heaters chatting whilst sipping on our cocktails, however our waiter did not smile at us once or introduce himself. Even when we paid he made no effort to talk to us and just let us pay. Didn't even say thank you! Will return for cocktails one day, but the staff we came across were not friendly.

There is no doubt that the cocktails here are A1 and as a previous reviewer has said though expensive they certainly pack a punch. The bar is small and cute and during light hours good for people watching along Mill Road. We will be back though we found the service a bit superior and distainful! But hey ho we got served okay.

When I first moved from the states I struggled to find anywhere that matched up to the standards I've come to expect when visiting a cocktail bar-but this place ticked all the boxes for me! The cocktails are world class and the atmosphere is awesome, it was packed out by the time we left (10pm Thursday night) so I guess it's best to get there early. The only downside is that it's right across town for me! Service, food, drink and atmosphere couldn't have been more perfect, see you soon 196!

Went in for drinks and it's a quaint and nice cocktail bar, although my chair did get repeated knocked by people passing behind it, the cocktails were great and pretty standard prices for Cambridge.

Amazing cocktails, a terrace for the good days and a friendly staff. There's even some decent bites if you are hungry. It's amazing!

Came here with a couple of friends as I live on Mill Road and hadn't tried it yet. I've gotta say it was probably one of my favourite nights of the whole year so far. There's something so nice about the street-side vibe, especially as it's such a small venue. On a Friday night in Camb, it's ideal if you don't want the corporate-bar city-centre feel. That comes at a cost obviously as it only seats about 20 people (if that), but get there in good time and you'll get a space. Cocktails were delicious (testament to which was our slight horror when we got the bill). That would be the only word of warning - you're going to be be paying £8-10 a drink, so keep track. Real gem in my fav part of Cambridge. Would recommend!

Been a few times with friends now and will always come back. Lovely cocktails and good variety on the menu. Only negative is that the staff don't look like they want to be there and aren't very polite either! Gets very busy on a Friday and Saturday night quickly but it's a good thing as it adds to the atmosphere!

Ok, so the cocktails here are really good! The place has a fun vibe but gets packed out really quickly on a Saturday night. The service was not great, we felt like we were more of an inconvenience rather than valued customers and our waiter wasn't particularly aware of what some of the menu items were either. HOWEVER, I would go back and maybe hope that it was a one off and that next time it might be a bit better. Mojito was good!

Il proprietario ha un'esperienza ventennale nel settore e si vede:ingredienti freschissimi, maestria unica e tramite le sue bevande riesce ad esprimere la "cultura del cocktails per i britannici" paragonabile a quella del cibo per noi italiani. Cocktail list is huge priced around £8 each. Very small place, but can be cosy in the evening and sometimes too loud. Felt pressurized by staff to consume our drinks in order to leave so that others could take our table. Wasn't impressed!

The cocktails here are excellent and the food, while slightly over-priced in my opinion, is delicious and a good accompaniment to the drinks. The place is on the small side, which isn't helped by the fact that they always seem to be over-staffed. But this is a perfect place for a quick drink before going on to dinner, or a drink and a snack after work with friends.

We popped in before a party and stayed slightly longer than intended. The atmosphere was terrific from clientele and layout to music. The staff were very friendly and the owner was welcoming and made some great drink recommendations. We stayed for 2 drinks instead of one and I would definatly recommend the Cadillac Margarita. Great place and can't wait to return in my next visit to Cambridge.

Met some friends after work for cocktails. The cocktail list is extensive and they also have a good selection of wines and some beers. I had a Belgium beer to end the evening. As mentioned in previous reviews the cocktails are excellent and around £7.The atmosphere was very cosy and intimate when we arrived but got very noisy and busy after 8pm.If you would like a seat and a quiet drink I would get there early As we got peckish we tried the charcuterie and the cheese board which came with bread and biscuits respectively. Good selection of meats and cheeses. The service was efficient, friendly and unobtrusive.

From the outside Bar 196 is about as nondescript as you can get. Grey facade, grey Venetian blinds, and the numbers 196 - it's address. Inside you have the feel of a Parisian Zinc and if it's warm enough to sit out you have the bustle of Mill Road to watch going by. There's not as much traffic on that side of the bridge and the pavement is wide so car fumes aren't an issue and at the right time of year you can get beautiful sunsets. The cocktails are the best I've ever had, and although they may look expensive you are getting serious bang for your buck - a far cry from the watery fruit juice other places call a cocktail. They don't put their non alcoholic cocktails on the menu but you only have to ask and they'll make you a delectable virgin.The place has a great atmosphere, it's tiny and does get busy, and when it gets busy it gets noisy, so we like to go earlier in the day when It opens at 5pm, sir at the bar and have more of the place to ourselves.The cheese plate and the charcuterie plate are delicious, one of each between two makes a nice dinner, and they're happy to supply extra bread and butter if you want it (which I always do!)

The cocktails here are incredible. From a first glance at the menu the cocktails do seem a little pricey, but they are well worth the money. Fresh ingredients and all made to order. I have been there a number of times with friends, family and my boyfriend and never been disappointed. They also serve some tasty food - including things to share. It is OK to have young children with you if you sit outside, as children are not allowed inside due to licensing (they maybe be allowed inside before 9.00pm).

We came here for a round of cocktails after having our dinner at Tradizioni across the street. It's a small cocktail bar with a good range of options. Staff was very knowledgeable and he even gave us a taster of a lesser-known liquor we were asking about. Decor is smart, old-looking/ retro posters, menu is done the same way, the bar itself is dimly lit which I think adds to the mood. We had Tobacco Old Fashioned, Raspberry Caipirinha and Alcohol-free Mojito. Our friend who had the alcohol free mojito thought it was so sweet, but all alcoholic drinkers were very happy with their drinks :) Overall very tasty experience in every aspect!

Knowing and visited a number of bars in the area I can definitely say that this is one of the best at the moment!Food options are perfect for the place. Had tomato and mozzarella with an olive platter.. It was Summery and fresh..The drinks are made with love, with passion and with precision. The way they should be done. No cheap tricks and alternatives... No half measures... The deco and the location is really does not even matter... The focus is on the drinks. The staff is friendly and professional.. I had a few caipirinhas and some specialities made for my requirements... It was as good as in a fancy bar in London but only pay half of the price!Will be back for sure...

This is a cocktail bar. They offer a wide selection of cocktails and they are expertly made. It's a nice place to hangout with a group of friends. It's not a cheap place though.

We have been recommended to 196 by so many of our friends and have been meaning to try it out for months...thank goodness we finally made it 'over the bridge'! 196 is just what Cambridge needs (anywhere needs), its intimate, unique, they play a good mix of music and the drinks were superb. The service was friendly, laid back, but efficient and we were made to feel really welcome as soon as we walked through the door. I will most certainly be returning to 196, hopefully not all too regularly as the drink are dangerously good!

Unbelievably insulted by the homophobic owner. Be prepared to be spoken about behind your back. Had been to this bar many times before but called up one night to check if they were still open. Was informed that they were so got a taxi to 196 only to be informed that we had to purchase food if we wanted a drink. We left, very disappointed due to not being informed of their policy. After speaking to the manager/owner, I was offered a complimentary drink which I appreciated. Went last night, only to have the owner send me an incredibly insulting and homophobic text that was clearly not meant for me but about me!!! Equality is clearly not high on his agenda. Incredibly disappointing behaviour from a diverse city such as Cambridge.

This is the opposite of a stylish cocktailbar, but the drinks are quite good, not excellent though.And as the bar seems to operate as a cafe as well, it open quite early in the evenings.No effort whatsorever is put into any form of presence on the web.Mill road in Cambridge offers an interesting mix of small shops and the bar 196 is located a bit to the east of the railway line.If you are in area worth going!

Thank you for making the start to my Birthday evening so good. Cocktails were great, service excellent and everyone was so friendly and kind.

Impressive range of cocktails and staff will help you make the perfet choice. Though they may appear small, these cocktails go a long way.

Great wine, exotic cocktails and wonderful food. Charcuterie, cheese platter and buffulo mozorello salad were especially delicious.
