Leaving a second review as I feel the owners behaviour was totally unacceptable. Reading others reviews following my own personal experience, it seems he uses any excuse to make paying and loyal customers feel extremely uncomfortable. It’s one thing having ‘procedures’ on how you run your business but talking to people in a way that tries to make them feel small and dominated is another. You should not do that to any human. I picked up on his strange behaviour as extremely controlling and rude. If you value your peace then I would avoid this place and the owner at all costs. I was made to feel awful for no good or just reason. And it gave me a huge amount of anxiety at the time. The owner is blunt, rude, demeaning and made me feel very uncomfortable, as a young female just minding her own business while socialising. I remained calm in the situation but underneath could not believe the way this man conducted himself. Please if you also have a bad experience speak up. I have never known anything like this behaviour, nor do I think he cares to change as sadly similar stories keep appearing over time. However more reviews speaking the truth will hopefully prevent more people having to go through the same experience. If the owner ever reads this, does it make you feel good to upset people just to feel some level of control? Maybe assess the situation a bit better and speak to people with respect and how you would like to be spoken to instead of assuming, judging and labelling people (people who are your customers I might add). It’s your responsibility to make the people that chose to come to your establishment feel safe within your walls, not feel so uncomfortable that they never want to set foot in it again.

A nice pub for meeting friends and/or colleagues! I was pleasantly surprised by gnocchi, the dish was very tasty! Arrancini and pizza were also good.

Great pub, there were 8 real ales on yesterday for example, and all were interesting.

A fantastic range of cask beer, in great condition. An extensive keg and bottle offering as well. Food home made and very, very tasty. Service is excellent. A great pub.

Myself and my partner had a very unpleasant experience today when we stopped by for a beer on our way home. I met my partner after work on the Bridge road where we bought a can of juice from a very reputably shop. My partner had finished his drink but I still had a few sips left. I wanted to stil drink it while it was called as it was a good juice. It was a very hot day and I was happy to stop for a beer when my partner suggested. At first I felt watched by the owner of the pub and another two workers as I was finishing my drink, and then the owner himself came out of the bar and started shouting at me in a very patronising way " Do you realise why I do not allow you to drink staff brought from outside? " I would not go in a restaurant or a pub with drinks from outside. It was just in the garden in front of the pub at a table. My partner wanted to stop there because he said he was drinking there for long time, and he knew even the father of the owner since 90s or something , and that it was good pub. I asked the owner " what should I do with my juice, as I would have liked to finish it" He told me "put it aside and drink it later." I explained that I would like to finish it when it was still cold and asked him if he wanted me to leave and go in the street to finish it. And he said "yes, go in the street". I went in the street while my partner finished his beer and I have never came back. My partner finished his beer quicker than he had planned and then followed me. I felt so humiliated and patronised. The owner of the place could have handled it better. To come and tell me nicer and more discreetly. To explain the policies and rules of the pub and to ask nicely to finish my drink and for the future to know that no out drinks were allowed. Everybody was watching. We will never go back there. It was not a nice experience. His anger and rage did not show any customer service, or that they care much about their customer. In front of the other customers and staff from the bar. It was not a good example. We do not recommend the place either but only if you want to be abused. From us is a "No way going back or recommending this place. 👎👎👎👎" Kindest regards, and all the best! Because they need it.

Cask ales and craft beers galore in this family owned pub. Highly recommended!

A fabulous, proper pub with great food and great hosts. I really enjoyed the melanzane and Pinot Grigio. My only regret is not thanking the landlady in person before we left. Well worth a visit.

Vincent was a top dude, very attentive and committed. Deserves all the praise, couldn’t have been served by a better gent.

I have always loved italian melanzane dishes. If you're in Leicester go to Roma on Halfords Street. But the Melanzane in the Maypole is probably the best I've had. Rich and uncchous. 5*.

Good beer in an atmospheric pub

This pub has the most obnoxious and racist owner that I have ever met. A friend of mine organised a farewell do for me and my family where we had some children and adult. The private area of the pub was booked from 5.30 to 7.30. Each time we ordered drinks or food the service was rough as if they were paying for our orders. The Staffs were not friendly to many of our guests. The children also informed that the Staffs were rude when serving them the food. Nobody in our party was drunk and everyone was decent. We cleaned the venue and wipe off any spilled children's drinks or food. As usual, there was slight food /pizza debris on the floor but nothing abnormal. The owner was rushing to set the place for his next guest, and we were caught by surprise with his racist remarks which stated , Is this how you people have dinner??. There were still guests present and everyone was shocked. He even introduced himself and said I am the owner!. Such an arrogant and ignorant human being. To make matters worst he said it infront of my child who has special needs. Feel free to contact me directly for further clarification.

Great pub, very close to the city centre. Impressive selection of cask and keg beers. Seating inside and out. Italian food served.

Brilliant well formed pub ever so slightly out of the hustle and bustle of the big colleges and city centre. Family friendly and chock full of brilliant beers. One suggestion start serving thirds some of the stuff you sell is very strong abv and some of your sours are very sour.

A great pub with a very large beer menu, including craft beer and Belgian. Cosy inside. Large outdoor space that’s great in summer.

BEST PUB IN CAMBRIDGE! Vinnie, Annie and team are absolutely wonderful and run the best place in Cambridge. Perfect for friends, families and couples. The cocktails are delicious and expertly made and the Italian food is amazing. Would highly recommend to anyone and can’t wait to go back!

Great ale choice, food is good but I thought was a little pricy for what it was.

Lovely pub, terribly poured Guinness

The second pub I went to near Cambridge. This time I was a little hungry so I ordered some food. In conclusion, I was reasonably satisfied with both the food and the beer. I ordered calamari, and as expected, it was a dish that was difficult not to taste. Of course, the portion was very small, but since I was full, it was a good snack. If you sprinkle lemon on it, even the greasy feeling disappears. Cask ale is always fun, after all. The pouring is fun and the taste just makes you laugh. This doesn't mean it's delicious, so if it's your first time trying it, I recommend drinking it in a small glass!

Honest little pub that has invested in a glorious outdoor seating area. Staff are as friendly as the many (many) years ago that I came here as a student. We had some delicious cocktails and enjoyed relaxing away from the crazy crowds of Cambridge. A proper hidden gem.

Great craft beer and small batch gin selection. Update: gin selection has been pared down, but craft beer and ale selection is still top notch, and the food is great.

I got the worst tasting guniess I have ever had... so unfortunately need to reflect that in my rating. The wine that was had and the beer after were decent enough. Queue was long as only 1 person behind the bar at a busy(ish) time.

Really disappointed with very salty pasta dish and bland pizza. It definitely has declined since we last went. The service and beer choice is still great but won’t recommend it for dinner anymore.

Lovely little pub with a really cheerful barmaid

Four of us were visiting The Maypole. We ate burgers and the Ragu, both of which were really good. We also tried all the desserts. The brownie was very chocolatey and the sticky toffee pudding was a very generous portion. They have a great selection of beers and spirits. The staff are friendly and welcoming. Will be going there again

Cracking pub. Had a fantastic variety of beers to choose from, including some rarities on guest cask such as two ales from Tring. Food was a bit mixed (the build your own style pizza was very good, while the gnocchi had a great tomato and basil sauce but could have included a bit more meat as it was supposed to be a prominent ingredient but wasn't much of it). But would definitely recommend.

Home Italian menu in a little pub. I’ve been here before I didn’t know that hidden gem. The gnocchi is gigantic and so lovely, perfectly chewy and filled with soft sausage. Wow didn’t expect that. The deep red tomato sauce has a hint of sourness and lightens the flavors. Rigatoni is also amazing. Again You are larger than normal shape— wonderful for me who loves large thick pasta. Al dente and bouncy. The Ragu comes in generous portion and melts in mouth. Classic but by no means boring. My friend said the sauces are on the salty side. For me they haven’t exceed normal restaurant level and still within the pleasant range, though I would concur it’s healthier to lower sodium input and maybe leave the option of table salt. Hope there are some veggie/salad for sides it’s alright. Thanks for the satisfying meal. We’ll come back for some more unique pasta ^^ The staff are friendly. The Latin American music gives a very different tropical vibe.

I booked the saloon bar at The Maypole for a birthday event and could not be happier with how it went. The space is really lovely and feels very private - there was a big rugby match on at the time and we didn’t even really notice - and it is great to have a private bar in there too. The food was amazing and there were lots of options for friends with dietary requirements which were really high quality too. But the biggest thing was how helpful and lovely all the staff were throughout. They were so accommodating from the moment I enquired all the way to the end of the evening, and so friendly and helpful on the night. I would 100% use The Maypole again for an event and recommend it to anyone.

I was shocked by the awful hospitality my friend and I received here last night. We'd had some food (which was pretty good) and drinks and we were chatting after we had finished eating. The barman then repeatedly pressured us to leave our seats in the main bar area to make space for other people. The first time he asked if we were leaving as it was busy and I told him we were still drinking/talking. A few minutes later he came back and said "you have had a nice time but now you should make space for other people". At that point we felt so unwelcome/uncomfortable they we did leave - I found the treatment from the barman to be hostile and unpleasant. I've been coming to the Maypole for more than five years and have never been treated like that. In fact, I've never been treated like that in any pub I've been in!

This pub has everything I might like about pubs - great atmosphere for socializing, good beer, cool people... And does not struggle with usual pub issues - noise, ordinary atmosphere, etc.

Came here on a visit to family. Service was great - a fab brother and sister duo who served us. They took fab care in regards to mother in law being ceoliac and understood cross contamination risks. Food was delicious with lovely pint of cold cider all had in the outdoor area. Beautiful surroundings and well worth a visit!

I’ve developed an allergy to nightshades which are not part of the 14 listed allergens in the UK and emailed them ahead of time to make sure there would be something I could eat. They were very kind and told me all the things on the menu that would work for me. When I got there, they were careful to write down what I can’t have and checked all the components of the dish I ordered, and made substitutions so I could have a nice meal. Would definitely recommend to anyone with food allergies and their inclusive and considerate service meant a lot to me! Looking forward to visiting again.

Got the steak pie with chips & gravy. Super tasty and very generous chunks of steak with a nice puff pastry. We shared a side of Korean wings which were awesome too. Not a bad pint either!

Still a nice pub but the pizza wasn't great. The anchovies had been bandied around in a somewhat liberal fashion. A more strategic use would have been appropriate so as not to overpower the pizza itself. For £15, a bit disappointing. Or maybe I should have just ordered something different.

Food is top draw especially being only a pub grub food I always see a lot of students in there, but they’re always very friendly. Most of the staff are from a lovely family That run the pub the owner is old school, so he knows exactly what you want all the time which always welcome you with a friendly smile. Really nice place to grab some food, the burgers are excellent and the staff really friendly. The only thing that let it down was a glass has lipstick still on it and we had to as for clean glass.

Been there for their craft beer selection. Nice & cool variety of IPAs, hoppy, stouts etc. even they have good range of gins. Very cool and friendly atmosphere. Big area for seating inside and outside.service was friendly and professional by knowledgeable staff. Sure try it again

The cheese focaccia was delicious but the side salad was too plain and unflavoured (I would prefer to not have it on the plate than to be added like that). The place is cool the people are amazing and the atmosphere is quite nice.

Independent pub with an Italian twist. Gourmet pizzas pasta and salad. Local beers. Large beer garden area. Located in the heart of the city. What's not to like?

Very nice pub with lots of outdoor covered seating. In "Tupperware" England, outdoor seating is rare and indoor pubs are usually badly ventilated and thus stuffy and bad for your health. So this bar is a haven. Close to the center. Later in the evening you can park easily not too far away, but come by foot or bike anyway if you can.

Few pubs in the centre to have an outside area, and it is truly beautiful atmosphere with the added bulbs on top! If you would like to catch up with friends over drink, highly recommend this pub

Really nice atmosphere and the lager and beer was very clean. Cambridge prices abound.

Food was good but pricey , staff hovered constantly, don’t go if you plan to have just one drink and god forbid you take anything in with you , felt quite uncomfortable.

Great atmosphere here with a large beer garden with plenty of seating. On hot days there is a bar open outside to order from with a vast number if drinks to choose from. The reason this isn't 5 star is the drinks are a little pricey but this is to be expected in central cambridge.

Great pub, lovely garden. Benito was a fabulous host and the Italian food was cooked beautifully. There is a huge selection of beers on offer (very little mainstream though). All in all, a great local.
