1912 in West Lothian

I was obsessed with 1912 for a long time. I thought it was fantastic - generous portions of tasty food, fabulous cocktails and a nice setting. Having said that - I have never found it to be a great choice if the sun is shining - even in winter. The blinds barely come down to shield your eyes, which can be blinding at times, and uncomfortably hot in warmer months! It’s a regular complaint within the venue, when the sun is blasting in, so I don’t understand why after all these years, they haven't come up with a solution for this. As time went on, I sadly (and hate to admit it) felt that it was all getting a bit stagnant. Our most recent visit confirmed my feelings, and we won’t be returning, unless there is a new lease of life brought into the place! The menu has never changed in all the years since opening - the potions are smaller than ever - and prices are astronomical, for what you’re getting. The menus have been dirty and falling to pieces on many occasions where we have dined there! On our most recent visit, the food was pretty bland and they should be embarrassed at their steak pie “dish”. Literally a pie on a plate, and not much more. The drinks have a hefty price tag too and the atmosphere overall, was extremely dull. It’s such a beautiful venue, with so much potential! I feel that they have stuck with “what has always worked” but the novelty for me, has well and truly worn off and I would welcome a new menu for a start! In my opinion, it’s not an ideal restaurant for families with young children either. There isn’t a great menu for children and for the odd still in nappies - there are no changing facilities - so best that in mind! There really are far better restaurants in Bathgate to enjoy a meal - x4. fantastic alternatives, that I now struggle to choose between!

Good food, atmosphere, ambience, and price. A "regular" took us here and we were not disappointed. the menu was extensive and the food prepared and cooked to order.

The food was just okay. Rather bland. Service was good. I really think they need to up their game. No wonder the place was empty.

Fantastic Atmosphere and great service. The food was at a reasonable price and at amazing quality. Staff were very attentive and friendly. Cocktails were delicious and the bartender was welcoming. Also, great choice of music! I will be frequent attender.

You should not have to go looking through the store to find staff to approve items at the self service checkouts. This happens every day without fail. Then the staff look at you as if you are an inconvenience….for asking them to do their job.

Very chaotic atmosphere, little offer in prepared dishes

Have been here a few times in the past however the last twice haven’t been good experiences. Last week I was there with a friend for coffee & a scone. We had several cups however despite the place being quiet & plenty of tables I felt the waitress kept harassing us to pay the bill. At my age I’m unlikely to do a runner so really felt they wanted rid of us!! It felt really unpleasant & not a good customer experience! Honestly I’d doubt I’d be back & tbh would have gone for a lunch which won’t now happen

1962 (sister restaurant, Livingston Centre) Disappointed as they had run out of their pizzas but hoping our experience was due to the recent opening and not quite being able to gauge service with demand. We booked for a Friday night 8pm and found the service to be slow, however it was super busy with a few large groups. The menu choices were limited as they had run out of pizzas and we both ended up with salads - absolutely not our usual dish. The meat (steak) in the salad was lovely however there was too much sauce which I felt was overbearing. The wrap had no salad, just steak and a ton of sauce. Food quality was ok, however wouldn’t rave about it as we were hoping to do! The cocktails on three other hand were AMAZING. Staff were lovely and friendly however there were long gaps and we had to try for a while to get waiters attention when we needed more drinks. Live music a great idea and created a fun and lively atmosphere. Overall, I think when the restaurant is more established and get the balance right things may improve. It’s a fantastic location and the staff tried so hard, however they had overbooked and absolutely could not meet the demand.

Went to sister cafe 1962 in Livingston Centre which is newly opened . Nice decor, service not bad . Very overpriced paid £4. 40 for a haggis roll, disappointed to say the least. Dry roll with one very small thin slice of haggis. Drinks way overpriced, £4.95 for a small bottle of lager. Would not return

Not ideal because they often don’t have forks for meal deals and have food past expiration date. The costa coffee machine is second to none

Pretty dirty and poorly maintained store but good selection of food and drinks

Really like it here food is great but having become a new mum as had 3 other woman with their babies in 1912 at the same time as me, we all found ourselves in a bit of a predicament when the waitress told us we need to use the Partnership Centre across the road to change our babies nappies as they don't provide a changing facility in the disable toilets. It didn't help that the weather was absolutely dreadful as well so we were all expected to leave our meals, wrap up and get soaked to walk across to the centre just for a nappy change. I was really disappointed as I found myself thinking it was the perfect place to meet other mums during the week whilst off on maternity leave for breakfast/lunch/coffee date but we can't now for this very reason.

Too overpriced in my opinion. If you walk a few meters further you can shop at Lidl.

Nice local restaurant in Bathgate, place was very quiet. Service was really friendly and food was ok, waffle dessert was dry and looked much better than it tasted

went for dinner after been given voucher as a christmas presesnt. had a bottle wine price just over £20 2 cans juice just under £3 each sharng platter chilli tortilla chips cost £14.95 not much sauce but nice.2plain burgers with chips £`14.50 plus £1.50 extra for cheese.1 other burger with chips over £16.00 1 chicken and haggis pie with peppercorn sauce and mash just over £9.00 very small portions no salad or onion rings with the burgers.had to ask twice for water for the table. asked for ketchup for granddaughter had to go down stairs and ask again,when it came it looke, as if it were rationed. will not be going back.service terrible over priced for the size of servings. would not recommend this place very disappointing

This is my local Tesco Express and on the whole is a decent place to buy day to day items. The staff are great and friendly. However, there are some unfortunate shortcomings about this establishment. In particular, the store is generally quite untidy and feels unclean, and as other reviews point out it shuts much earlier than the stated closing time at around 11pm instead of midnight. This means that it can be difficult to pick up some late night snacks if one so desires. Overall it is an okay place to shop for small items.

Came along here with the family for some breakfast and loved it! The venue is modern, clean, and spacious. The service is personable. Most importantly, the food is delicious. Will definitely be back.

First time in 3 years. Busy place for a Thursday lunch. Food was excellent pricey however £13.95 for wrap and chips is a little ott. Only 2 staff members on outwith the kitchen so they were busy but owned it and kept calm. The woman serving us was friendly and very professional. Recommend to others but please know its not a cheap one.

Best turkey dinner I’ve ever had. Home made turkey roulade and trimmings were outstanding. The fact that the restaurant is owned by David Stein Butchers is very clear. Chipolatas were incredible.

What a lovely afternoon with friends. Fantastic band playing “Upscale” female piano player and vocalist. My friend and I had the Festive Menu. Best Turkey Dinner I’ve ever had. I believe the restaurant is owned by a butcher and you can tell. Stuffing and chipolatas outstanding.

Really disappointed with this local business. It used to be a go to place for me but I’ll not be back or recommending it in future. Service is really slow for food and it’s hoaching too. We were told they needed to hold off on our food orders due to the kitchen being busy which was absolutely no issue with us but the gap between ordering and food service then between courses wasn’t considered when it came to needing the table back. So because of this we were just starting our second course and being told they needed the table back. Full disclosure on our part one of our party were running late when we were told they couldn’t take our food orders yet but they were present when another waitress came back to order food and drinks so one person being late can’t account for the experience of feeling chased off our table. At the time of booking no one advised us that the table was required back for a set time and we still had bottles of wine on the table half full, starting the first few bites of our second course. As we were getting ourselves together our original waitress said the table wasn’t required and we could stay but it was too late as our taxi was waiting- a taxi we had to call during our second course because we were being chased. I’d reconsider if you have a table booked here unless you’re fine with a big gap between service, can eat VERY fast and be prepared to be eating and ringing yourself a taxi so the next lot on the conveyor- sorry table can get in.

Self checkouts are poorly maintained. Rarely have paper for receipts and constant problems with scanning club cards.

Hadn't booked and venue was busy for a Tuesday afternoon. Managed to get seated at a table for 3 to celebrate our Son's birthday. Menu was varied and lots to choose from. Food was delicious and service was great. We opted for Mains - chicken balmoral pie, spicy beef strips salad and a burger. All enjoyed their choice so much we decided to go ahead and order desserts. With drinks our bill came in under £90 so we were very pleased with that too. 1st visit and won't be our last I'm sure!

Good store to get day to day items especially for tourists. The staff are helpful. Majority of the checkouts are automatic self checkout. Reasonable prices and good quality fresh produce.

Lunch with family, food was very good, atmosphere upstairs was pleasant. Service was a wee bit slow but very pleasant staff member.

Tbh it wasn’t great. Seated upstairs, the heat was unbearable. Ordered 5 meals only 4 came, after the others had eaten the final meal arrived. We were told it would be removed from the bill, it wasn’t. Service was slow, main meal was average, a bit like something I could make at home really. Dessert? Home made meringue, it was big yes. It looked amazing but was sadly overcooked and tasted burnt. Overall a disappointing visit.

Visited with my son on 16/07 late morning. We hadn’t booked and thankfully there was a table available. We got seated very quickly, which was great. Then for reasons I don’t understand we sat for maybe 15 minutes without anyone asking if we wanted a drink or take our order, and it wasn’t even that busy. People who arrived after us were served before us. The food was alright, but nothing to write home about. My son had French toast with bacon and didn’t rave about it. I love the decor in here and the coffee is decent but it’s gone downhill since my last visit.

Every time I come into 1912 Rona and Aiden are always amazing and very friendly. Couldn’t fault them. Always go above and beyond for us. They make us come back to 1912. Love Tash & Gems

Twice now been seated upstairs. Far too hot even in colder days. Two fans make no difference. Always ask to sit downstairs. Food ok but a little overpriced I’d say.

I have eaten here before but the last time I ate here wasn’t the same. It was somewhat overpriced and the food just wasn’t enjoyable. The waiting staff however were friendly and professional.

Well thought I would try again....after being turned away at door for not booking before this time I booked online and done all the credit card malarkey and booked a table from 6:30 till 8:15, got seated haha made it!....was speaking to couple beside us...

I love this intimate Tesco express. The size is so convenient you can easily find exactly what you are looking for. The prices aren’t too bad either and I think this Tesco has some of the best meal deal options in all of Edinburgh. If your in this area of Edinburgh it’s a must visit if you want an easy shopping experience and it’s just a few minute walk from the large Tesco Express.

Refused entry before 2300 when site states open until midnight. Was told by staff “oh well that’s old opening times, you can walk to the next Tesco.. that MIGHT be open but dunno you’ll need to look”. Followed your advertised times so what’s the point in looking further? Quite unfair for a shop that advertises household essentials and medicines. Staff were more interested in leaving with their own shopping whilst joking around and eating, to communicate with potential customers whilst in operational hours. Poor show!!!!

Pretty average food, vegetarian chilli wrap was awful wish I got something else! Waitresses were lovely but food took over 45 mins and service was slow! Probably wouldn’t go back for the prices they are charging!

Good prices if you get the clubcard, which is a very difficult process sometimes because of website bugs, however do not trust the closing time being 12!!! They close at least at 11pm, we tried to go here at around 11:30 the other night and it was completely closed and lights off and everything.

Today I arrived to Tesco located at busy street on south bridge time 22:53. Black security young boy stopped me on entrance telling that shop is close, however Tesco operates until 11pm right ? He didn’t allowed me to go inside and he was really nasty including unpleasant smell. I request manager who came and try to explain that they are really busy but nobody was inside. Manager’s name was Gabon who’s allowed me to go inside. I explain that I just wanna buy cigarettes and it will take me 30 seconds. Black male still insists to don’t allow me to ho inside. Finally I have my cigarettes but definitely person responsible for closing doors so early should be investigated.

Just been made to feel like a criminal for asking if Tesco sold sparklers in this South Bridge Tesco Express. I can understand and actually agree with greater control over the sale of more explosive fireworks, but trying to buy some sparklers for my nieces and being spoken to and glared at in such a dismissive and rude manner is unacceptable. The contrast with the Tesco express further up on Nicolson Street couldn’t have been starker. Women at the kiosk there apologised and said they’d change their policy recently but gave a couple of suggestions as to where I might be able to buy them. Maybe some training on how to be pleasant and respectful to customers wouldn’t go amiss in this South Bridge branch!

No consistency! Staff at this Tesco store wouldn't accept a paper £20 note, but staff at other Tesco stores, as well as their self-service machines, are still accepting these notes. I was even told that Tesco's doesn't have a standard policy regarding this issue, very odd and contradicting ? despite them still being legal tender, still in circulation and an end of use date still to be announced, this is the first supermarket I've found to refuse one. you get far better store to store consistency at other supermarket chains like ASDA.

Visited here for saturday coffee and breakfast. Well organised for covid and booking well arranged. Quality of food and service was excellent and great to see it reopen.

My experience at 1912 was excellent - not only was the food excellent (which can often be difficult to find as I avoid gluten) but the staff were lovely and all very competent with social distancing and sanitising. The place was clean, well distanced and a pleasure to eat at. I will be returning for sure.

Really disappointed last night from start to finish. Walked in the door we had booked a table and the waiter asked us to sit at the table at the door. I asked if we could sit away from the door and was told all the tables were booked out. I suppose if I owned the place I would have moved from the seat I was sitting at to give it to a paying customer. Got our dinks which had more mixer in it than alcohol we ordered wraps. Watching the young waitress wrapping cutlery was enough she was serving as well as but never once did she sanatise her hands when she was wrapping the cutlery which just now I don't think you should do, she put her finger into water to stick the napkin down served more people never sanatise hands. She put the wrapped cutlery in a tin with salt pepper and sauce in it which I did not know if anybody else had used. So I ate my wrap my very disappointed very small wrap that I paid £10 for with my fingers. So ordered more drinks and asked the waiter not to fill my drink to much with mixer did not listen and don't blame the new start it was not him. So still hungry we had a desert nice bought in waffle nice!!! So got the bill paid went to toilet no sanatiser so used our own. We were there about 1 and a half hours and the tables at the back where it was warm still empty,and the owner still sitting there hope he was not cold every time the door opened.

Terrible customer service from what I presumed to be the manager. She had an attitude as if she didn’t want to be there and we did not feel welcomed. I was taking my nieces out to lunch today with my partner and it really spoiled the day. The waitress that served us after our drinks order was nice however, the food was average. It was a shame as we heard it was a good place to go for lunch but it’s safe to say won’t be visit again.

Was pleased to see this cafe bar reopening. The food is always tasty. It has a nice atmosphere and the staff are friendly. I will definitely be back.

Tesco express worst store in Edinburgh the staff are rude unhelpful and are lacking in customer service experience u phone to speak to a store duty manager to be told there none working but as soon as they no it's about a complaint they pass it our to a random staff member who claims to be the store manager and is no help at all now if you want to to be gaving 100% great customer service then walk straight pass this store and go to the tesco metro shop as there Staff know how to treat there customers

Even for a Tesco, this is not a very nice store. Keep walking a bit further (5 minutes or less?) in the opposite direction to the Old Town/centre and you will find a Sainsbury's and a Lidl right next to each other on the same side of the street, which are both better options for price (Lidl) and quality (Sainsbury's). Or if it has to be Tesco, then the branch further down is better than this one and only another 1 or 2 minutes further walk past Sainsbury's and Lidl. Just avoid peak times at all these if possible due to all the students, the Sainsbury's is by far the quietest of the 3. Also an odd (unpleasant) smell in this particular Tesco store recently, no idea what it is but it's rather off putting!

I ordered a drink I took one sip and didnt like it. I asked the bar staff if I could order something else and they refused. This was not good service. If this is the only decent place for drinks in bathgate I would recommend not going out in bathgate.

Highly recommended breakfasts at 1912 in Bathgate. Me and my friend had egg benedictine. We just had to wait quite long for the bill but wasn't a massive deal for us.

We had a great time here with really attentive service with good food and a nice choice of reasonably priced wine. Both of the staff that served us were extremely friendly and gave us prompt service and courteous at all times. They made sure we had a top up when required. We will be back.

I tried to pop in to 1912 for lunch with my friend and our 2 babies (both in prams) only to be told we were not allowed to take 2 prams in despite there being tables available - the waitress advised we could only take 1 pram in - obviously this was not an option when we walked and needed both prams. I have been in 1912 previously where 2 prams were present so this time I was really disappointed that the staff would not accommodate us and felt they were rude in the way they turned us away. Not great service from a family run business

Popped in hoping for a few quick drinks (which, at £7.75 a pop would have been a nice little earner); seeing as there were (at most) half a dozen customers figured it was a good time. Nope - name was not down so we did not get in.A bizarre, pretentious way to do business.

The worst tesco ever....smelling...no products

We arrived mid-afternoon on 23rd December without booking, went in and was pleasantly greeted; we informed the server that we hadn’t booked but we definitely wanted drinks, possibly food. She informed us that the only seating they had were bar stools upstairs. I’m not great at climbing stairs currently so slightly grimaced and was about to say we should find somewhere else when the server checked her seating plan and said we could use the bar stools downstairs. This was appreciated so we sat there.I ordered a coke at £2 per can (I felt this was slightly cheeky but I do appreciate there’s a sugar tax and it’s an eating establishment with overheads and taxes and wages and so forth) and the bread board with three dips which came with a mini baguette, flat bread, reasonable sized side salad, olives (beware, some do have stones in as you should expect) and sunblushed tomatoes - this was brilliant and such good value at £8.50! I’ve never been a fan of sunblushed tomatoes but these were really nice! The dips were balsamic vinegar, plain olive oil and summer fruits balsamic!! The summer fruits balsamic is DELICIOUS!!!! I ordered the vegan option and that came with a vegan butter!! It didn’t taste like a mass produced butter so maybe they’ve made their own or invested in better vegan butter than myself.Hubby had a full Scottish all day breakfast, large cappuccino and orange juice. He said the egg was a tad rubbery but he ate it all the same.The serving staff were great and did two check backs.The service was a smidge on the slow side but I did notice their kitchen wasn’t the biggest.Such a great experience and such a difference from my first visit a couple of years ago where they only had a small vegetarian menu and most of that was compromised due to cooking methods.Will definitely go back again before we leave!

Great food, everything piping hot, very good service could not fault it and reasonable prices. The only fault was it was boiling the heat in the place was too much but other than that a very enjoyable meal with hubby and friends

Today my husband and I thought we would pop in for a quick bite at 1912 we did not have a booking but thought we would chance it. When greeted at the door 2 x waiters stood staring at the booking screen for about 5-6mins finally they said you can sit at the bar stool. After waiting 20 minutes no one came over to take our drinks or food order, we tried numerous times to make eye contact but the waiters were to busy chatting and laughing at the bar. I proceeded to walk to the bar to ask if someone could take our order to be met rudely by the bar staff （women, possible manager？）who ignored me/rolled her eyes and said someone will be over.I dont understand why such a lovely family run venue with great food can be lacking this much in customer service. Please hire staff that represent your buisness better.
