Small hotel bar which didn't really live up to its name in terms of the decoration. Small selection of beer and cider but comfy chairs. Signage for toilets is quite confusing. Some interesting objects on the walls.

Bar is comfortable but plain and typical of a hotel bar. The courtyard is very nice for a quiet drink if there are no weddings or functions on. Drink choice is quite limited but a nice visit.

A very comfortable and warm place to meet friends for a coffee and perhaps a meal, good coffee set in a nice old Salisbury Hotel.

I had an interesting time at the bar, especially when it was raining outside. Me, I only had a full pint of a Bitter Shandy. Perfect place to relax, even when you're not staying at the Red Lion hotel.

We were staying at The Red Lion at dropped in for a drink. A good choice of wines and real ales and a good choice of lunchtime snacks. Nice to be able to sit outside away from the traffic. Well worth a visit.

My wife and I spontaneously decided to have Sunday lunch at the bar/restaurant. We had our lunch in the Victoria Lounge which was a lovely setting with comfy chairs and tables and had more of a restaurant feel than a bar. Sunday Roast was on the specials and we decided to have roast beef - a great choice! The meal was well cooked, hot, well presented and prompt. We were served by the duty manager who made sure all our needs were attended to.

We visited the bar while still staying at The Red Lion hotel at lunch time and for a pre dinner drink. The lunchtime menu was very good as was the selection of drinks, and the bar had a good atmosphere. The only drawback was the time we had to wait to be served, as there always seemed a lack of staff.

We wanted to meet up and chat with some old friends for two or three hours so decided to meet up in the lounge. on a cold wet lunchtime. The Earl Grey was perfect with Lemon and plenty of top up hot water. Haddock and chips was very good quality with no grease and good tartar sauce and mushy peas. My friends club sandwich was a meal in itself. Service was good and completely unhurried to move on we spent almost three hours in a very pleasant warm environment.

We had 2 lunches at the 1220 Bar and I can't recommend it highly enough. Their freshly made sandwiches were amazing which came with sweet potato chips and salad. Excellent value.

Great atmosphere in a truly historic hotel. Feeling peckish ? Your options are categorised under "small" or "big" plates and range from nibbles to share to massive fish and chips.

For the last 10 years on my 3 grand daughters birthdays I have taken them to the Red Lion for afternoon tea which was always a delight, until yesterday. At £9.50 a head one expects more than is offered and the quality and quantity has taken a steep dive into the poor bracket compared to the experience we used to have. The menu states what the tea consists of and on its arrival elements are missing or not as described.Tartlets - none, biscuits (plural) one, scones that break up into crumbs when trying to butter them etc.Penny pinching has spoiled what was a lovely experience and it is such a shame.I would not ordinarily use this forum to criticise but I used the Red Lions' own online comments page and received nothing back so here I am.

The Red lion Hotel is an olde worlde type of place in the centre of Salisbury. We went as a group of 4 for afternoon tea using a voucher from living social. We had a pleasant enough waitress who soon served us with teas & coffee. This was immediately followed by a warm Pimms, but the table became over cluttered with so many cups and glasses. We wondered what we should be drinking first! When the tea arrived, it appeared to have a good selection of sandwiches and cakes as well as scones and cream with jam. However, the sandwiches had obviously been sitting around for a while as they were starting to dry out. The cakes were not what you'd expect from an English tea. They comprised of chocolate brownie, cheesecake, cookies, and a type of sponge. It seemed very American and was slightly disappointing. the scones were crumbly but had a nice enough flavour. The jam was in small, individual jars and would have been much nicer if it was something other than you'd expect to see at a hotel breakfast buffet. The room we had tea in was full of beams and character. The service couldn't be faulted. However, the nasty pong in the ladies loo kind of let it down. It is a nice place with some quirky little features and we'd certainly be happy to visit again.

Having just arrived in Salisbury my colleagues and I decided to pop in to the bar at the Red Lion. Behind the bar was a chap called Matt (food and beverages manager) who made zero attempt to make us welcome and in fact was highly unfriendly - not a bar we would bother visiting again.

I do not know what has happened here, it used to be my favourite venue in Salisbury. At lunch in the 1220 bar yesterday (Monday 10th Dec 2012), we were initially offered only part of the lunch menu, the waitress later brought us the 2nd page. Having made our choices, the food was delivered in good time, however, no condiments were offered. I had a pasta dish but no Parmesan cheese or black pepper was offered. I asked two waitresses before it appeared by which time my pasta was cooling and was almost inedible. one of the party had fish and chips but no salt or vinegar was offered. Waitresses blamed it on 'the new menu', I blame it on the lack of effective preparation of waitresses by management. Very disappointed, I need to find another restaurant in Salisbury as I will not visit the Red Lion again.

The two stars are purely for the friendly staff. Unfortunately, the food really let the experience down. We both ordered steak, which turned out to be tough and completely lacking in flavour. It was served on a bed of onions that looked and tasted like they’d been boiled rather than cooked properly—pale, with no colour or warmth to them. The tomato on the side looked past its best and the peas were yellow. The chips were disappointing too, full of black knots and just not appealing. Overall, I wouldn’t return, as the quality of the food was poor.

In short, a lovely pub let down by poor service and food. Visited 1pm on a Tuesday. Service was very poor, we had to tell the servers three times we were ready to order over a 15min period. When it came to paying the bill, it was the same, we had to keep asking. Servers were not busy, the place only had about 20 people in including our party, they were chatting to each other rather than looking after their customers. They left the card reader with us and never came back ... so we took our card and left. Food was mediocre at best. Two of our party had steaks, and both we overdone (my rare was medium/done). The cheesecake was the worst I've had, three of us couldn't eat it, taste and more so the texture were just off ... the base was fine. I've never left a poor review before, but this place, on that day, deserved it.

A great place to catch up with colleagues on a busy market day. I had the hake dish which was delicious and I would go back if I lived closer.
