We stopped in for the Mocha and got the works! So good and great service! Indoor and outdoor seating and a nice vibe. Would recommend!

We usually love this cafe, but today we had a poor experience and I think the management need to know as it’s easily fixed. We arrived, cafe was fairly quiet. There’s a bit of work been done recently and they no longer do table service. We marveled at the pastries that look amazing, then choked a bit when we realized they charge £4.70 for a croissant! Anyway, we ordered two teas, and two waffles; one with Nutella, one with salted caramel and an extra fruit compote. We were told our food would be available at the end of the counter for us to take to our table. This type of service works well if the staff are putting your order on the tray there and then. But I had to wait for the waffles to to be cooked. So I sat down ant my table and kept an eye out for our order being ready. I was not given an order number, a ticket, and they didn’t take my name. I saw two teas on the tray. I waited for the waffles to appear but none came. I approached the counter and asked “are these my teas to take?” Because I wanted to be sure as my order wasn’t complete. The answer was a dismissive “I assume so. If you’ve ordered two teas” I bristled a bit at his tone, but took the tea and awaited the waffles. Whilst waiting we noted numerous tables not being cleared, despite a male member of staff walking past said tables countless times. The kitchen door was propped open and we could clearly see two kitchen staff chatting, and scrolling on mobile phones. 15 minutes passed. Still no waffles came. The table next to us arrived after us and were already half way through their food. And ours hadn’t even arrived. I approached dismissive man behind the counter and said “Excuse me, I’m still waiting for 2 waffles” I saw his face change as he realised just how long we’d waited but instead of apologising he decided to go with “Yeah, the chef disappeared for a bit, he’s doing them now for you” The chef had not in fact disappeared as we’d seen him in the kitchen the entire time we were waiting. Anyway.m, I was looking forward to my waffles with salted caramel so we waited some more. The waffles finally arrived, but one with Nutella and one fruit compote. “I also ordered salted caramel” says I. Then comes his very strange response… “We don’t do salted caramel anymore” Now my husband is a chef, and about 5 minutes earlier he’d seen a staff member walk into the kitchen with a massive tub of salted caramel, so he pointed this out. The even stranger response? “Err, yeah. That’s just for staff. Not customers” So there was a giant tub of salted caramel on the premises. My order of salted caramel was accepted. And I paid for it. But it was now for staff only. By this point, our tea was cold, we really wanted to eat our waffles and it felt petty arguing about salted caramel. So we ate and left. Waffles were nice. Tea was cold by the time we ate them. FYI Salted caramel still appears on your menu and on your website, so if that tub is just for staff they’ll be eating it for the next 5 years… Anyway, I’ve waffled on. To sum up, today was a very strange, disappointing experience with staff who had an air of arrogance and lied to us about a waffle topping. Not very hygge, and not very Baltzersen’s.

I booked afternoon tea here as a valentines gift for my wife. To be clear and fair here; I’m not a fan of afternoon tea at all - I think it’s a very expensive meal for what you usually get. But my wife loves it and I wanted to treat her as part of our long weekend in Yorkshire. This hotel is lovely from what we saw, it’s beautifully decorated, it’s very clean, and the staff are friendly, but our meal was very disappointing. We were the only people in the entire dining area which seemed a little odd, but at least we had privacy. Our choices of actual tea were made (English breakfast for me and gingerbread chai for my wife) and these were delicious. But, and it’s a very big But; the food was very disappointing. Salmon sandwiches and chicken sandwiches both a bit underwhelming but palatable, but a tiny croissant filled with a minuscule amount of ham and cheese and a pot of very cold ratatouille with 2 cubes of feta cheese on the top which was revolting and just weird! Then the desserts - some quite nice pastries but the highlight of any afternoon tea should be the scones and they were quite frankly terrible. The fruit scones were both absolutely rock hard on one side so slicing them was a joke because you just couldn’t get your knife past half way through! Definitely not fresh scones (possibly frozen and reheated?) Nobody asked us if we were enjoying our food and it wasn’t until I paid that I was able to point out our disappointment. I was told it would be passed back to the kitchen…. Would we go again? Definitely not for afternoon tea that’s for sure.
