Took my Dad here for lunch as he enjoys a carvery and, although it was the only one, they offer a bean and lentil bake as a vegan option that you can have with all the carvery veg etc. so I ordered this. Sadly, when it was produced, the bean and lentil bake looked like a giant paxo stuffing ball with some vegetable pieces in it! Many of the carvery vegetables were off limits for a vegan diners too as they contained cream and others looked to be glazed but when I checked which o9ne sI coiuld eat I was told they use a special 'vegan butter free glaze' ....hmmm. The bean and lentil bake was mainly breadcrumbs and there was no trace of any beans or lentils. I queried what I was eating with the waitress who said she wasn't sure either and took the dish away to check with the ktichen. She returned 5-10 minutes later and advised they were not sure either but thought it was "mainly vegetables!" I decied not to eat the rest of the dish and my Dad had nearly finished his carvery roast by then so I skipped the main course and just had dessert with him. The restuarant was full when we went and, looking around, everyone appeared to be tucking into the standard carvery so I don't think there's much demand for bean and lentil bake or that the kitchen has anything prepared. On the plus side, my Dad said the carvery was fantastic and if you are all meat eaters I would definitely recommend a visit. However, if you need to order vegetarian options, I would tread very carefully or probaby best avoid this restaurant altogether.

I’d like to first start by saying I gave them a chance to rectify their mistakes, however they have ignored my emails. Me and my partner visited the hourglass in December firstly we arrived and they didn’t have our booking even though we booked about two months in advance. There was lots of confusion but eventually they us sat down. We ordered our mains there was no vegetarian roast on the menu, however they said that they could do a vegetarian roast for us. We waited 1 1/2 hours for our mains to arrive which is absolutely mad. They weren’t even busy. When my vegetarian roast arrived, it didn’t come with gravy or any roast accompaniments e.g Yorkshire pudding. When I complained about this, they said that it was because they didn’t have any vegetarian l gravy. They brought out a Yorkshire pudding which after I ate it I found out was made from beef fat. Now I’m not a very over the top vegetarian but if this was someone else who had very strong beliefs that would be mortifying for them. they offered us a free dessert. However, we only had two hours parking and at this point we had no time left and couldn’t add it on. As it took so long for our food to be served. We also didn’t have time to go for a walk which we had planned to do after our meal. All in all a really bad experience.

We booked for dinner to celebrate our anniversary having last visited a few years ago. We were delighted to have rediscovered this slightly hidden treasure in Exeter! The quality of food, service, atmosphere was amazing and made for a perfect evening. We tried the Christmas menu but the standard a la carte which is updated daily looks lovely too. And of course, there’s an impressive array of wines and other drinks. We look forward to visiting more regularly.
