On a typical Lake District evening what are you looking for in a pub? This certainly hit the spot … a roaring log burner, a warm welcome with a mix of locals and visitors, good beer and excellent food - tasty, good quality and hearty portions. Travelling alone you always end up talking to those around you and they were similarly enjoying the beer and the food. It’s certainly dog friendly too with water bowls and towels to dry them when you arrive … before they hog the log burner. I gather this has been newly taken on by a family and I wish them well. Certainly I hope it thrives so I can return whenever I am breaking my journey at Shap - which is v convenient just off the M6.

By the time you’ve descended from Kidsty Pike, negotiated the Hawesater shoreline and then walked onto Shap you’ll be pretty well exhausted so it’s rather disconcerting to find you have to trek the length of the village to arrive at the Greyhound Inn BUT the good news is it’s all worthwhile! Four of us walked the C2C. The section from Patterdale to Shap is the toughest stage. We found the section from the start in Patterdale to the Greyhound (at 17 miles) to be a greater distance than mentioned in the guidebooks but it does mean (because you can walk directly up to the railway and motorway crossing points from the back of the pub) that you reduce the distance of the following day’s walk by something like a mile. We had a very warm welcome from the manager Tom and, more importantly, the bar staff. Excellent dinner and very lovely restaurant waitress. Breakfast was similarly very good. Service was prompt and friendly at all times and we felt that the team couldn’t have done anything to make our stay more enjoyable. The bedroom (room 2) was spacious and pleasant with a large, comfortable bed and had a decent bathroom with plenty of good quality towels. All accommodation in Shap is on the A6 which is a busy road (and the Greyhound is no exception) but thankfully you’ll be so tired that you maty not notice it!
