The best restaurants serving Default food in Capel Tunbridge Wells South East

We had a lovely mid week lunch with friends. There is something very special about the George & Dragon - not a chain pub, spotless, bitter at perfect temperature, humorous & kind landladies, a traditional English pub at its very best, a place with soul. Not to be missed if you are passing by.

Sorry to say we were quite disappointed. We've been here before and it's been great. We've also been to several others in the chain and not had a problem. This time it was just a bit naff. The restaurant area was dirty, cobwebs everywhere. The garden area was a state as previous customers had left food and rubbish all over the tables and ground. The staff were so busy that they clearly didn't have time to clear up properly. The bar had roughly 150 dirty glasses on one end, it just looked awful. The staff were all working so hard and were so polite and attentive but they were clearly run off their feet. The other clients made it far worse, yobs in the gardens shouting and swearing when there are young children nearby in the play area and walking past. People dressed as if they've just got out of bed... I was shocked to see a man in jersey shorts and t shirt, bent over a child's plate with his hairy backside out for all and sundry to see, disgusting. I appreciate it's absolutely not the management's fault but it just further depleted the experience. The food... Sweet potato fries were soggy and clumped together (they did replace them with fresh}. Roast potatoes were hard, not crispy, just really firm. Peruvian fillet steak salad was not fillet steak, it was too fatty and tough to be fillet. Grilled halloumi, flat breads, wild garlic & courgette soup and the desserts were all good.

More than half our order was missing , we had to do a 40 min round trip to collect a new order. The rice had pieces of unidentified items in it and there was no apology forthcoming

We always meet as a trio of friends here as it is central to where we all live. Our usual waitress, Andra, is always so accommodating, professional and friendly at the same time. The food is great and well presented. The menu suits many different tastes and dietary restriction, I.e. vegan options. The restaurant has a great atmosphere, plenty of outdoor space as well.

A very rare visit to this pub, is a pleasant experience. It’s not particularly local to me , or on route… but I know it’s there , and hopefully open- so it’s worth a visit. Friendly enough staff, friendly local patronage … and menu looks great, so will definitely check out the food again one day soon.
