What a delightful pub with such a warm welcome from all the staff. Rooms were very modern for such an old pub and exceptionally clean with everything we needed. Dinner by the log fire was excellent - service was very efficient and so friendly. We slept very well and enjoyed a delicious breakfast in the morning - I would highly recommend this pub, also great for a stopover as it is only a few miles from the M6.

Stayed at the Westmorland hotel on the way from Aberdeen to NW England to visit family and friends. Clean. The lounge area has been refurnished and well set out. Rooms clean and basically furnished. May need to rethink showers vs baths during any upgrade of rooms? Latter can be trial for anyone with disabilities and I’m not sure how many people luxuriate in a bath these days. As usual the evening meal was excellent. I always have their lamb offering as it is from their own farm and always excellent. Modest wine choice. Local beers to try. Pleasant staff and good to see young local people working in and being introduced to the hospitality business. Breakfast good. Bought local Lakeside gin and fudge for our hosts. Several other local items on offer and several other quality goods from UK suppliers. Returned for a coffee stop on the way back. Not over busy. Excellent coffee. A bit overpriced. Food offering was not needed but looked a reasonably varied options. Salad looked great. Might try to be more imaginative with cooked food offerings but have to look at practicalities from a cooking and keeping fresh perspective against what the general public ask for. I am usually content with soup and a roll or sandwich for lunch when travelling. After all one is not exactly using a lot a calories sitting behind the wheel of a car! Had this at Cairn lodge and good it was too. Food outlets employ local people many of them young being introduced to retail. Well done to the Dunnings for doing so and bringing local jobs to local youth with prospects of moving on to greater things. No need here for cheap immigrant work force. Bought a butcher dept pie, vegetables and Cartmel sticky toffee pudding for supper that evening. Pie full of steak and tasty. Keep up the good work.
