Where else would you see a cafe surrounded by several flocks of sheep? ππππππππππππππππππ On a Welsh mountain side in the middle of the Brecon Beacons, that's where! What a unique and enjoyable experience; sipping hot freshly made coffee, munching a lovely bacon 'butty' with the breeze blowing through the valley. Plus, a 'captive' audience, each one of the woolly creatures in the audience hoping for a free sample from my bread roll. No luck there I'm afraid. Good quality burger, fresh bun and great service from the proprietor. Will definitely use again.

When I arrived my family were already sat at the table. It was a warm day so I picked up a glass from the table to have water. It was so dusty it looked opaque, my cutely was all dirty. My starter came (mushroom) the pasty was soggy and under cooked. The children had pizza ( limited basic childβs menu) it was the quality of a basic unbranded super market value pizza. Cheese just melted no colour. I definitely think it needs a new hygiene assessment, When I spoke to the staff (all young, no senior member) I was told to ring or email. Iβve done both since and to date no reply. It could be such a wonderful place. It just looked said and run down.

During our visit to the hotel as guests of a wedding our child with a severe tree nut allergy was served profiteroles containing nuts. The venue was told that the child with a severe tree nut allergy would be dining prior to the event. When the child was served the profiteroles, the child's dad asked the server if the profiteroles were nut free, the server went to the kitchen to check. When the server returned they said 'the profiteroles contained traces and fragments of nuts but no whole nuts, so it should be ok'. Luckily the child had not eaten any. I (the child's mother) then spoke to one of the directors of the venue, who acknowledged they were aware of the child's tree nut allergy, but said the bride had said 'it would be fine' and therfore knowingly oversaw the serving of profiteroles with traces of nuts, to a child with a severe tree nut allergy. The director showed little concern and no understanding of the implications of serving allergens to guests with allergies. Had our son eaten the profiteroles he likely would have had an anaphylactic reaction, which could have been fatal. Shortly after explaining to staff that our son was allergic to the profiteroles, he was served the profiteroles for a second time, before we asked they be taken away. Later at the evening buffet, a sign was put up to say the all the buffet food contained nuts. No alternative food was offered for our five year old. To put our son at risk in this way, after being given prior notice of his tree nut allergy was negligent and unforgivable.

We arrived in The Brecon Beacons on Sunday after a long drive,Red Lion was our nearest pub so we walked to have a drink, it was packed. We received a warm welcome from both staff and locals (who even offered to let us sit with them) everyone chatted to us, it was so lovely. Drinks arrived quickly. Monday we were booked in for dinner, it was amazing. Roaring fire, comfortable seating, clean toilets and another friendly welcome. We were served a pumpkin soup with garlic bread compliments of the chef, delicious. There were 4 of us so we chose spicy crusted mackerel, duck breast and the scallop with pork belly, all were perfect. We then had Welsh sirloin, which came with chips, onion rings, tomatoes and mushrooms, so juicy and tender and perfectly cooked. 2 had rump of lamb and other pork belly all were as menu listed and were outstanding. Almost too full for dessert but we shared a apple/rhubarb crumble tart which came with crΓ¨me anglaise and clotted cream ice cream OMG beautiful π 2 finished with a coffee laced with Penderyn whisky from the local distillery. Red Lion is a traditional pub with a menu worthy of the gastro pub title, we loved the people and the food. If you are in Penderyn donβt miss it.
